Activism and Protest through Art in Malaysia. Could it Hurt?

Activism and protest.

This can happen at anywhere and anytime and Malaysia is definitely no stranger to activism and protest such as the Bersih 2.0 rally, #BenderaHitam (#BlackFlag) and #Lawan (#Fight), #KitaJagaKita (#WeTakeCareOfOurselves), #BenderaPutih (#WhiteFlag), and #RakyatJagaRakyat (#CitizenTakeCareOfCitizen).

For week 6's post, I will be talking about satirical art on social media as a form of activism and/or protest (because I've seeing it on my social media a lot).

Satire, A Form of Activism

What is satire? According to the Oxford Languages Dictionary, satire is “the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues. Zunar, Fahmi Reza and Namewee are some of the famous artists in Malaysia that are known for their satire art which can be found on social media such as Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. Here are some examples of their work:

This satire art by Zunar when Kedah Menteri Besar decided to not mark Thaipusam, a festival celebrated by the Hindu Tamil community, as a occasional holiday on 2021 just because of the Covid-19 situation back then when other festive season are allowed to have occasional holidays.

This art is from Fahmi Reza who drawed this in relation to the actions that were taken to him when he drew different prime ministers' faces.

“Katak” a song uploaded by hip-hop artist and socio-political activist, Namewee, is about “Malaysian political frogs” that defected to other parties after the collapse of Pakatan Harapan Federal government during the general election fever.

Why did they choose satire art as a medium for activism?

Malaysian cartoonist, Zunar’s motto was “How can I be neutral… even my pen has a stand,” and also said that “the medium of cartooning is (a) very powerful medium; meanwhile in an interview with Fahmi Reza conducted by Griffiths (2019), said "Using satire and humour is effective because it breaks the fear barrier," and "People had always been afraid to speak out. The culture of fear is always there; the culture of self-censorship is always there. That's where satire and humour can be the most effective tool, it makes people less afraid." Namewee, on the other hand said that he has the sense of responsibility to bring up social issues (Bedi, 2022).

But with all that, let’s just say didn’t go too well…

Zunar, facing the possibility of prosecution over a cartoon criticizing a politician (RSF, 2021) and had his office raided a couple of time (Zunar, 2016). Graphic artist, Fahmi Reza has faced repeated arrests and prosecution for his art (Loheswar, 2022). Namewee, the controversial singer and film maker, faced a lot of issues with his songs and films from him almost gotten his Malaysian citizenship revoked (Malaysiakini, 2008) to a movie that made an association of Malaysian artists lodged a police report about this movie (Bernama, 2020).

All of them were detained and charged quite a few times and they were all detained mostly under Sedition Act. Malaysian government is found abusing this act to silence any one that had controversial opinions (or opinions that just hurt them) to create “a culture of fear” (Lakhdhir et al., 2015). The former executive director of Suara Rakyat Malaysia, Yap (cited in Lakhdhir et al., 2015) said that “they are creating a culture of fear. If you engage in any talk of public interest, the police may come to your house, you may be arrested, taken to the police station, remanded. Even members of Parliament are treated that way.”

Short conclusion, in my opinion, activism through satirical artwork isn’t the best choice here since the Malaysian government (more like *cough* politicians *cough*) isn’t cool about it. But activism is good because activists are fighting for a fair social system that can bring benefits for themselves and others that are vulnerable.
