hi is visiting spain still acceptable as a tourist? we’ve been looking at visiting bilbao but are reluctant to go if it will cause more harm than good
oh i presume you are talking about the anti-tourist protests in barcelona, mallorca and other parts of spain this weekend?
well, i can't tell you not to visit spain, but i can certainly tell you to engage in ethical and sustainable tourism. bilbao is not as bad when it comes to tourism as other parts of spain, but for the europa league final, english tourists were vandalising bilbao, and that's not okay. just remember:
don't stay in air bnbs
don't eat at mcdonald's, taco bell, or any of the other foreign owned restaurants in town
shop local when you can
learn a few phrases in spanish, and if you're feeling motivated, basque, catalan, or any of the regions you are visiting.
try to visit at low season if you can
be empathetic with what locals are dealing with in their daily lives
source: reuters on twitter
Tumblr media
i would just say to follow the tips above. the problem is not tourism itself. it's over-tourism and unethical tourism. and to add to the above, don't get so drunk that you engage in bad behaviour 🙏

sharing this for valuable tips because i get a fair number of anons asking me about "ethical" tourism when visiting barcelona, the balearic islands, and spain generally.
hello, i’m sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but i am planning on visiting barcelona next year, however i know that tourism is making life difficult for the locals. i want to ask, is it possible to be a more “ethical” tourist and if so, what advice would you give to somebody visiting barcelona to be as little trouble for the locals as possible? or would the locals prefer that barcelona is boycotted as a tourist destination altogether? thank you 🫶
The most important things:
NEVER stay at an AirB'n'B (even for your own good, most of them are illegal and if you get caught that's also on you). Don't stay at tourist rental apartments. Those should be for rent for people who want to live in it, not monopolized at high prices for tourists. Stay at a legal hotel instead.
Never take a cruise ship.
I would recommend avoiding going to any restaurant or commercial establishment that is only for tourists and rich "expats". You'll know them because they have their signs, menus, etc only in English, or maybe in English and Spanish. If a place refuses to include among their options the local language (Catalan), it's a tool of gentrification of that neighbourhood.
Don't name, tag, nor geolocate specific places like bars, cafés, beaches, etc. if you post photos on social media, because that's the way that places become "viral" and the local population is expelled from them.
If you can, avoid coming during summer (high tourism season), though this isn't an option for everyone depending on the job.
If you run into Salvador Illa or any of the other people who approved the plan to make Barcelona's airport bigger through the destruction of the Llobregat Delta natural area, spit in their face!
The most important changes must come from politicians and not individuals —though individuals absolutely must take responsibility and never go to AirB'n'Bs nor go to places where locals are asking for a stop of tourism like Hawaii, Eivissa (Ibiza), Mallorca, etc.
Even so, it's a shame but we have to be very careful with even things that would look innocent. I think almost everyone has engaged in harmful behaviour without meaning too, me too with this blog. I've been deleting information on photos I had posted on this blog, making some posts unrebloggable, deleted photos both that I had already posted and others that were on the queue, and I still need to do a lot of deleting. It's difficult to try to find a balance between sharing (a happy memory on a holiday for tourists on social media; or try to share explanations to contribute to building intercultural understanding, positive curiosity towards human diversity, and internationalism, in my case) and not contributing to advertising for already over-exploited places. I'm not sure how to do it well either...

The Market For Ethical Tourism Is Expanding As Demand For Environmentally Friendly Travel Experiences Rises
The global ethical tourism market is a fast-growing travel segment that provides sustainable travel experiences while also delivering economic and social benefits to local communities. The market offers unique accommodation options, local activities, nature and wildlife experiences, and cultural interactions - all done through responsible and community-focused operations.
The Global Ethical Tourism Market is estimated to be valued at US$ 258.54 Bn in 2024 and is expected to exhibit a CAGR of 5.7% over the forecast period 2024 to 2031. Ethical tourism connects travelers directly with local communities to experience the natural, historical, and cultural aspects of a destination first-hand. It promotes sustainable practices that preserve natural and cultural heritage while providing livelihood opportunities and improved standards of living for local populations. Ethical operations minimize negative environmental and socio-cultural impacts through their practices. They employ locals, purchase supplies from nearby sources, educate guests on conservation issues, and donate portion of revenues back to the community or environmental projects. The growing demand for unique and purposeful travel is driving the demand for ethical tourism offerings around the world. Key Takeaways Key players: Key players operating in the ethical tourism market include Intrepid Travel, Responsible Tourism India, Responsible travel, Wilderness Safaris, Basecamp Explorer AS, Wild Frontiers Adventures Travel, Beyonder Experiences, Bouteco, Cheeseman's Ecological Safaris, G Adventures Inc., Gondwana Ecotours, Inkaterra, Intrepid Group Pty Limited, LooLa Adventure Resort, and Natural Habitat Adventures. Growing demand: The Ethical Tourism Market Demand for sustainable and responsible tourism is increasing rapidly among millennial and Generation Z travelers who want their travel experiences to have a positive impact. Many travelers now seek out community-focused, nature-based, and purpose-driven local experiences versus mass market tourism offerings. Global expansion: As awareness about ethical tourism rises, many destinations are promoting their sustainable tourism operations and partnerships with local communities. Several industry associations have also come up to standardize operations and certify ethical tourism activities, operators, and accommodations. Many countries in Asia Pacific, Africa, Latin America, and Europe are actively developing their ethical tourism sectors. Market Key Trends One of the key trends in the ethical tourism market is the rise of voluntourism where travelers participate in social or environmental volunteer projects ranging from a few days to a few weeks. Voluntourism appeals to those interested in gaining skills, learning about other cultures, exploring new places, and contributing to local communities through hands-on work. Many operators now provide structured voluntourism programs that are beneficial for both travelers and host organizations. Ethical Tourism Companies overlap of tourism, volunteerism, and purpose is an emerging trend that is expected to grow significantly.
Porter's Analysis Threat of new entrants: The ethical tourism market has moderately high entry barriers as operators need to invest upfront in infrastructure, partnerships and goodwill building which deters new entrants. Bargaining power of buyers: Individual buyers have low bargaining power due to the availability of many service providers however group buyers like companies and organizations can negotiate on pricing and custom packages. Bargaining power of suppliers: Operators have moderate power over local suppliers and communities as they help generate local income and livelihood however they don't have pricing power over global suppliers and services. Threat of new substitutes: Tourism is experiences based with low threat of substitution however digital nomadism and remote working offer alternative travel options. Competitive rivalry: The market has high competition with many regional and international players offering unique experiences however differentiation also exists based on locations, activities and sustainability focus. Geographical regions: Europe accounts for the largest share currently due to high awareness and focus on greener travel options. Countries like France, Italy, Spain and Germany attract significant ethical tourism visits and spending. The fastest growing region is expected to be Asia Pacific led by countries like India, Thailand, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Their natural and cultural riches coupled with improving infrastructure and policies will fuel strong doubledigit growth in ethical tourism arrivals and value in the forecast period.

And as a Vancouverite in British Columbia, Canada, it's gotten so bad the government is clamping down on AirBnB rentals here. If you have to travel here, please:
Travel during the slower off-peak months if you can, and
Stay in a proper hotel. I promise you, you're not saving as much as you think in an AirBnB here especially given all the ancillary fees the room/suite owner can apparently tack on, such as cleaning fees.
Luckily, I haven't heard of any major historical buildings here being turned into AirBnBs, so thank goodness for small favors, I suppose.
Hello, quick question. What the fuck
Tumblr media
"Santorini: The local department of the National Conservatory has shut down - It will be converted to an Airbnb"
If you ever ever travel to Greece, one plea: DON'T stay to an Airbnb. They are destroying the country. Trust me. If you want the good of the country and its people, go to a hotel, maybe ideally a small business boutique hotel but any hotel is more ethical than an Airbnb at this point.

I think a lot of people don’t understand that mass tourism in Spain is a lasting legacy of Franco’s dictatorship. In the 50s Spain’s economy was horrible because they were alienated on the world stage given they were a fascist state and had supported hitler through wwii. However, with the rise in communism, the regime saw an opportunity to find a powerful ally in the US and signed the pact of madrid in 1953 in which they recieved military and economic support, spain joined the UN two years later. Franco actually relied on avant-garde art to present a façade of liberalism to the rest of the world (see the Venice Biennial in 1958), despite avant-garde art still being censored within Spain. This was part of the opening up of Spain in the hopes of attracting tourism. Mass tourism really began in the late 50s and early 60s with Manuel Fraga, the head of the Ministry of Information and Tourism believing that tourism would help support the economic development and modernization. He promoted the use of the slogan “Spain is Different” to promote Spain as a popular destination for holidays. Franco revoked the need to obtain a visa to enter the country and the devaluation of the peseta made it an incredibly easy and cheap place to visit. The state was heavily involved in the tourism industry and unitl Franco’s death held the right to control the prices in hotels and restaurants. The number of foreign visitors jumped 43% in 1960 to 4.3 million, 18 million in 1967 and 30 million by 1975.
I apologize for the long history lesson, I actually just wrote a semester long paper on the use of art and art museums under franco as a means to legitimize his power and attempt to create a unified national identity.
Tumblr media
thanks for sharing, anon! we've spoken about this topic several times on my blog. even the catholic church was weaponised by franco and used as a tool of oppression.
in fact, it's another reminder that a lot of the problems that spain and its autonomous communities are facing today in 2025 can be traced back to the legacy of franco and that evil regime. 😤
and it's also a helpful reminder that it's important to study our history to understand the present and prepare for the future.
Tumblr media
yes, so a few years ago, i travelled to hawaii and this was a sentiment that was shared with me by our guides and different people who i encountered. a lot of people also lamented the high prices of housing too and being priced out by investors or people from the mainland who came to retire or buy vacation homes on the islands 😔
Tumblr media
oh yes. it's a huge problem across the world and companies like air bnb are exploitative and make the problem worse.
that's why i left my hometown, so that in the future, i'll be able to retire and help care for my family too.
