July 2nd, 2023 - Etrian Odyssey III HD
I had heard good things about this one and I gotta say, it's a decent Etrian Odyssey game. With this one, Atlus made plenty of improvements to how everything worked which makes things feel a bit nicer. Now you can earn EXP from sidequests and missions. Not only that, but one way shortcuts now display a message. Unfortunately, the messages don't tell you that they're one way.
This time around, we don't have geomagnetic poles every few floors. In this game, they're called submagnetic poles and only appear on the first floor of each labyrinth, which aside from the post-game one, only have four floors instead of the usual five. I'm not really surprised because I knew this one did things a bit differently (like EOIV). Once you reach a certain point, you'll go back and forth between two different towns: Armoroad and the drowned city, where you can set a sub-class for the first time ever in the series.
You only have to make it through two stratums. Afterwards, the next three stratums play the second main battle theme instead of waiting until the fourth like before, which makes sense considering how you start the third after finding the deep city. In the original DS version, the battle music in post-game stratum was just the second theme because of a memory issue. Since the modern platforms the remaster is on have more room, the sixth stratum got a new and way more fitting track for battles.
And the soundtrack is one of Etrian Odyssey's best. Overall, I did like my time with this one. The stratums were decent for the most part, but the fifth one gave me a headache with one of its gimmicks. To be honest, I'd say these remasters are definitely the best way to play the DS versions (even though DS touch screen feels nicer). The updated controls work well and the games still feel like Etrian Odyssey. I'd love to see more of the old games get remastered (Untold remakes on 3DS are better though). Looking forward to seeing IV, V, Nexus, getting rereleased and hoping that we'll hear about VI.

related ramble: genuinely if the part of decked out that appeals to you is "incremental progress in which the players must learn the map bit by little bit and also understand when to turn around and bail to learn more of the map later in another run", you don't mind games that are hard, and you like rpgs. please play etrian odyssey. please they're such good games and no one ever talks about them. please,

etrian odyssey games are so hard to recommend for a variety of reasons, up to and including the fact that all the games, even the easiest one, will flatten you like a bug if you're not willing to learn how to play the games. Like the Remasters are probably the best way to play EO1-3 but it's like, purely because the QoL additions make the games much more reasonable to trudge thru lmao. They're really interesting to study for game design purposes! I kinda hate a good chunk of the portrait art! The monster design and world design rule! EO1's story is fucking bad dogshit for a variety of reasons (EOU managed to make it worse somehow!) The games are challenging in a fun way! The games are challenging in a bullshit way! The loop of going into a dungeon, exploring, opening shortcuts, gathering loot, then returning back to town and upgrading equipment and restocking rules! The music Fucks dude yuzo koshiro fucking killed it with the series's ost its so fucking good.
Like I genuinely love the series but it's also like, "hey how much bullshit are you willing to put up with". I get a lot out of it (esp EO2!) because i see so many good ideas in there that it makes all the rough shit feel less because like, wow it still kinda kicks ass! It hits when it hits my friends!
anyways that's why I'm even motivated to make rpgs. There's some sauce in there and i crave it.

Look I know there's a good bit of a learning curve and playing on the actual hardware can be kinda challenging with pricing on the secondhand market but like even if you gotta emulate it I IMPLORE you, the reader, to give the Etrian Odyssey series a try.
There's nothing as fun or immersive than making your guild and mapping out a 3d dungeon yourself. Make brand new ocs that fit the world! Make your existing ocs and put them in! Put you and your friends in and pretend you've all been isekai'd! I assure you if you can get past the early adjustment phase you'll have the time of your life!!
Be excited for the HD remasters coming out in June! Especially for 3, which never got a proper remake like the first two did!!!

Two in One Post
For my Filipino Friend's On this Day Post
I played Excitebike too. I have played the NES Version a lot. I also played the Nintendo 64 one too, but it was tricky to get used to the controls and the gameplay. And this can be just like when Rita was also competing in the Motocross tournament while she was pregnant. Either before or after.
Debby 😺📱🖥️: Do your Best Rita! I know you're the greatest Cross Driver ever. And maybe Windy and I can watch you compete just like how we watch our sons compete in the racing games too.
And for a Response to both my A-Pal and my Filipino Friend
Yeah maybe if there's another Nintendo Direct, I bet we can both voice chat together if we want to. Because when I watched Nintendo Direct a few days ago, I couldn't tell if I would watch it alone, or watch it with some YouTubers or watch it by voice chatting with friends. And also I understand how you feel when Rare was just a subsidiary by Microsoft, it's a bit like how Atlus and Rovio are both subsidiaries to Sega. Because even with so many companies selling franchises to their companies, like Angry Birds, Etrian Odyssey and Shin Megami Tensei Persona, and when we find out who owns it, sure enough, they call around saying that Sega owns them. Much like with Bayonetta, it used to be made by Sega, they call around saying Nintendo owns it even though Platinum Games is the ones that own the series despite Nintendo publishing the game. So Bayonetta was counted as a Somewhat known Title, which is what Nintendo makes besides games based on their properties like Mario, Animal Crossing and Zelda. And back to Rare, what's also bizarre is that not only Microsoft had Rare as the developers, but I just heard that they made Sea of Thieves on a different system like the PlayStation 5. And when I just watched the Direct, I heard Horizons, a PlayStation title is gonna be on the Switch, but in Lego style. It was kinda confusing that so many of their titles owned by their own companies are now being shown on all the different systems. Because with Xbox Titles, they're usually only for both Xbox and PC, and I also heard when for classic Nintendo 64 titles, I know they just put in some M Rated titles like Perfect Dark and Turok, and what's confusing is why not buy the remastered version of Turok on the eShop? I talked about it with Deev on Discord voice chat last night and he said it was a stupid idea. Because we can just buy the remastered version because it was better and we can also buy their sequels too. Even when we can get Turok on different systems like PlayStation, Xbox or PC. And it would be confusing if they brought more M Rated Titles to Nintendo 64 like Conker's Bad Fur Day, Resident Evil 2, and Mortal Kombat 4. And ever since I got the Rare Replays for our A-Pal for his birthday, I know he's trying some of the Rareware titles when I last check on what he's up to.
Speedy 😺👟: We sure are, Mrs. Windy! And normally Grandpa wanted to try it, but he wanted to stick with being a PC player and rarely play a console.
Paul 😺⚔️⚒️: Well it's something. Sorry Guys, but I hope I'll try playing the consoles if I get the chance. Normally I've only played the original Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2 Echoes, and i haven't played 3 Corruptions and neither has Shadow. Plus I know the Multiplayer of Metroid Prime 2 Echoes is good since Shadow, Speedy and I played it together as well as for Caleb.
Speedy 😺👟: Yeah the Multiplayer is really fun. I sure played it a lot with Dad and Uncle Caleb. And maybe we should try it out together too, Mrs. Windy.

Suggestion for ‘The Sovereign’ from Etrian Odyssey III. The route could look like this
The Sovereign -> Aigis -> Joker -> Ryu
Aigis is a Pre-order bonus party member portrait (skin/character swap) in Etrian Odyssey III HD. Aigis appears alongside Joker (Persona 5) in Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth. Joker is a fighter in Smash Ultimate with Ryu. This gives the Sovereign a Ryu number of 3.
Alternatively, Joker himself is a Pre-order bonus portrait for Etrian Odyssey HD. (The first game) If the Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection containing the full remastered trilogy is counted as a single title, Aigis could be skipped, giving the Sovereign a Ryu number of 2.
The Sovereign is a class that people/your party members can take on, so I'm not super keen on counting that as a unique character that can have a Ryu Number.
Tumblr media
Gutrune, however, has a Ryu Number of 3.
(clarification below)
Also, both as of the time of this ask and post, the HD versions of Etrian Odyssey with the Atlus crossover skins are not yet released and therefore ineligible. I've no reason to doubt that they will be available come May 31/June 1(?), but until then, no dice.

On one hand, I really appreciate that Atlus is bringing back older titles or even reviving their IPs, as is the case with the Etrian Odyssey HD trilogy. In fact if it weren’t for SMT Nocturne HD, I wouldn’t have gotten into Megaten.
But I can’t help but also be critical of how Atlus (and Sega too by extension) has been approaching their re-releases and remasters as of late. I didn’t actually mind Nocturne HD’s lack of polish and P3P’s, even though yes it is egregious, AI upscaling isn’t enough for me to turn it down completely.
But what I do find really off-putting is pricing and especially for Atlus to price the complete Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection, a digital-only release, at $80 USD.
Actually it’s even worse for me, as a Canadian. It costs $106 CAD.
Even just buying them separately is ludicrous. One EO HD title is priced at $52.99 CAD. That is almost the same price for the Persona 3 Portable + Persona 4 Golden bundle on Switch ($53.99 CAD). So for the price of one EO HD, I could buy two Persona games with that same money.
As it stands, that plain isn’t good lmao and I cannot see myself buying even just one EO game at that price unless there is a big discount. It is certainly not going to draw in potential new fans and just comes off as exploiting veteran fans. And it makes me really concerned, pricing and poor remaster efforts with previous releases combined, if this is going to set a new precedent going forward.

Etrian Odyssey II-III Playthrough
Tumblr media
Start of Run: Between Aug. 1-3, 2023 (EOIIHD Part 1 and/or 2) End of Run: Dec. 28, 2023 (EOIIIHD Part 17)
Welcome to the Compilation Playthrough post of both EOIIHD and EOIIIHD. (I know the picture isn't great, but it will do.)
I did these two first since in summary, they're the easier ones, despite I recently finished EOIIIDS. (tho not this year, all of them done last year, with EOIII around almost christmas, and a Phigros update.)
They are still very fun games overall. Soon I will finish the remastered trilogy, by playing the first game, but I will take a break for now and suffer in another game.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy, despite just mostly no commentary playthrough. I might plan that on first game tho, but we will see. I'm gonna need some storage expand tho.

February 2023 Nintendo Direct Bullet Thoughts
Pikmin 4 being a rescue mission feels like a natural progression, same with the assumed night-time exploration. Probably going to add some good tension, though not as much as the unsettling dog friend.
Someday I'll play Xenoblade Chronicles 3... when I have time hahaaaaaaaaa.
Samba De Amigo is the strangest comeback, but I'll take it?
I haven't wanted to be an Influencer™ even virtually and I'm not going to start now.
Is it just me or is the new Tron game kinda pulling from the Necrobarista school of mostly static narrative panels in 3D spaces w/ really precise and gorgeous cinematography?
GHOST TRICK REMASTERED BB!!!!!! :3
...followed by a game in which we play a cop... 'kay. I mean cat form cool, but ehhhh
Bayonetta: Origins has a gorgeous storybook aesthetic, but also feels real strange? Not even sure what pricks my mind on this, but it's probably going to be fine.
If Splat33n crosses over with Nier, I will laugh hard enough to blow up the sun.
So strange to see an "X of Illusion" game from Disney in the year of our gods 2023, but the animation is satisfyingly good, so I can't really complain.
Harmony, is yet another game with gorgeous animation, but also might have an interesting enough story to keep me hooked.
Stars, I'm never going to play a JRPG again with my schedule, huh?
NA NA, NA NA NA NA NA NA NA KATAMARI ON THE SWING 🎶
Been waiting for Sabotage's next game after The Messenger to come out, and MAN IT'S LOOKING GOOD.
Seeing Etrian Odyssey get an easy mode for it's older games is FUNNY, but I'm surprised they don't seem to have remastered / remixed the soundtracks.
Advance Wars finally exists, for real this time.
I've always wanted to play as Magolor, and now my wishes have been fulfilled. Now we can finally learn how he came to become a Theme Park Manager.
GBA / GB games are nice, and the local / online multiplayer is nice. Cool. Cool cool.
Metroid Prime Remastered feels like they're building up hype to try and get a reveal of Metroid Prime 4 later down the line. Still, looks gorgeous.
Ah, hello Not!Danganronpa.
Oh, it's that Animal Crossing Fantasy game that was decidedly okay
Huh, new Professor Layton game... WAIT WHAT‽‽‽‽
Banger soundtrack tbh for the rapid-fire blitz of games. Highlights for me were Blanc, Battle Network Collection, and Have a Nice Death
6th time seeing Breath of the Wild 2 as the stinger really kinda dampens the effect. But hey, we have slightly better voice acting and a tentative release date!

Etrian Odyssey HD Origins Collection Review
Tumblr media
This will be a review of the collection itself as a remaster/ remake.
TLDRFAQS:
Q: Are these games even any good?
A: Yes! Etrian Odyssey is the perfection of turn-based RPG combat design. If you want to experience a turn-based JRPG that’s actually worth playing FOR the gameplay, look no further. They also feature great music, and the original Etrian Odyssey ends with the best plot twist in gaming.
Q: Where should I start?
A: The original Etrian Odyssey was nearly impossible to recommend in good faith to people on the DS, but Etrian Odyssey HD streamlines its low quality-of-life with features from much later in the series. This game also has the best story of any in the series by far, making Etrian Odyssey HD my obvious recommendation for new players.
ETRIAN ODYSSEY ORIGINS COLLECTION REVIEW
While $80 is steep for 3 remastered Nintendo DS games, the original games go for like $80 each on ebay, and for a reason. The original 3 Etrian Odyssey games provide something you can’t get anywhere else, even from later games in the series. Even on the DS’s 256x192px display, the excellent illustrations by Yuji Himukai outshined their 3D imitations in later games. Out of the entire DS library, the Etrian Odyssey games were the most deserving of an HD remaster. I could feel the illustrations, and the forest folliage, trying their hardest to break through the low resolution and show their true beauty. These games were always more ambitious than their budget and hardware could handle, and with the HD treatment on Switch, I can honestly say this series has never been better.
The touch controls translate smoothly to the right side of the screen, enhanced by the mapping improvements made over 10+ years of iteration on the formula. If you think mapping with your thumb sounds awkward, you should feel how awkward it is to maintain spatial awareness across screens of the map in the original games. Not to mention, the enhanced auto-map options minimize the amount of drawing required, leaving you to focus on the more personal aspect of marking events, shortcuts, and puzzle mechanics.
As I said in the TLDR section, Etrian Odyssey HD is supremely easy to recommend as an entry point to this series, as well as an excellent stand-alone game. If you have the coin to shill out, get the international physical Switch Cartridge, and choose the English language option. It’s $80 down, but that thing has only increased in price since its release, so you’re likely to get your money back or more once you’ve had your fill of these games. If you’re poor, heck, just emulate the original (or 4 if you want to have fun), you have my permission.

June 12th, 2023 - Etrian Odyssey HD
I missed this series so it was good to see it back, even if it was just through rereleases of older games. They aren't based on the 3DS remakes, but the original DS versions instead. At first, I was a little disappointed, but not anymore. The DS and 3DS ones can kinda be counted as separate games because of different map designs. So far, I've just done the first of the HD remasters. It's the same game, but with a few quality of life features and updated to only use one screen.
The touch screen was a big part of these games so we all wondered how it would work, and while it doesn't feel as nice as a DS/3DS touch screen, it works. It's definitely comfortable enough and I'm okay with them continuing the series like this. I do wish there were a few more of the quality of life improvements from Untold though: like floor jump (would be REALLY useful due to how shortcuts are placed), actually being able to see pits and shortcuts, have warnings for 1 way shortcuts, and the Untold soundtrack.
A few annoying things, but they didn't ruin my enjoyment. It's still Etrian Odyssey and I'm hoping we'll get more in this style. Looking forward to what they do with VI and wanting to get IV, V, and Nexus in the Origins Collection style. Who knows? Maybe we can get the Untold games ported someday too (even get one made for 3)? Not really much else to say. Solid Etrian Odyssey game, but it's a bit rough in some areas.
