The difference between Sam and Dean isn't that Sam doesn't repress things, it's that Sam knows when he's repressing something.

Dean throws up walls in his mind haphazardly, without ever looking at the thing he's afraid of. He shies away from the bad feelings, so he misses things when he's trying to protect himself from them. And in the end, his hastily built walls can rarely withstand the pressure of all that he's trying to keep inside.

Sam is the opposite. He examines a feeling very carefully, and then he takes only the part that's too big and dangerous for him to deal with and seals it behind a flawlessly constructed barricade. He sometimes chooses to pull those walls down, but otherwise, no one ever sees it again. This is how he can seem totally normal one moment and then the next tell you he spent his entire life feeling unclean.

The problem with treating everyone who ships something you find troubling as an abuser just waiting to happen (and often not just an abuser but specifically a pedophile) is that we apply different social rules to abusers. It goes like this: If a ship or trope is just something you personally dislike, then it's your responsibility to avoid it. But if it's causing harm, then it's wrong, and you can demand people stop engaging with it. If the people who engage with it anyway are abusive, then it's okay to compel them to stop engaging with it using whatever means necessary - most commonly the threat of ostracism, verbal abuse, and emotional manipulation. But these strategies aren't really about protecting people from harm, they're about controlling and punishing people who engage with fandom the wrong way. Fans are punished if they refuse to ostracise transgressors, too. These fans are categorised as abuse enablers and subject to the same treatment. Questioning the status quo is risky, because you might be accused of having a hidden agenda that supports abuse.

Within this culture, the highest priority becomes keeping out a specific kind of predator, ie the kind that's easily identified because they create or consume the wrong sort of fictional content. Keeping the wrong people out is placed above everything else. It's more important than identifying abusers who don't fit this particular profile, and it's more important than protecting people who are not abusive. It's more important than treating other people well and being treated well yourself, because the premise that underpins this culture is that the system only hurts people who deserve it. It's difficult to admit you feel harmed or controlled by this culture, because doing so is tantamount to admitting you're a bad person who deserves to be harmed. I don't think our communities should make us feel that way.

I don't have an easy solution to these problems, but I think the first step is making it possible to talk about them. Or perhaps we need to start more basic: it needs to be possible to think about them. Because currently, thinking about these things is dangerous. What does it say about us if we reach an unacceptable conclusion? It's safer to just trust what we're being told is and isn't ok, and any further thoughts we might have start from that assumption. If we want to build safe communities, though, we need to create a culture where we're encouraged to evaluate complicated moral issues ourselves, and ask questions, and think them through even if the conclusions we reach are messy and uncomfortable and incomplete. We need to be able to trust our own judgement, without fearing consequences or feeling like our sense of ourselves as a good person will be destroyed if our judgement conflicts with somebody else's. I think a culture that encourages those things is going to be healthier than one that doesn't. And I think that we should re-evaluate the system we use to keep abusers out of fandom spaces, because the current one is based more on ideology than actual impact, and it's enforced so aggressively and so broadly that it's damaging our communities.

Look I just think that even if there's absolutely nothing going on between Sam and Dean, literally everyone who's ever met them has had that one moment of, like, squinting and tilting their head and asking, "Hey, are they...?" And the person next to them, who's probably had their own so are they? moment already, just sighs and says no, at least not as far as anyone can prove, they're just Like That. I mean when have you ever met a hunter who was normal about their relationships?

Sam and Dean are mostly oblivious to this. Occasionally they'll run into a hunter they've never met before, and at some point in the first 48 hours after meeting them that hunter will glance sidelong at them and say, "So, um, about the rumours..." And Sam will shrug apologetically and say yeah, that apocalypse thing was kind of on him. Dean will fold his arms, silently daring them to make something of it, and the hunter will look from one of them to the other, and pause, and say, "...got it". But they don't. They're never quite sure.

Early seasons of Supernatural were a lot heavier on the incestuous subtext than later seasons. I don't mean that Sam and Dean's relationship changed, exactly, but the framing of it shifted. They were put into fewer situations where the lines between familial and romantic or sexual got blurred. But I don't think this change was because anyone was concerned about how Sam and Dean's relationship was being perceived. I think it was because the show pivoted it's genre from gothic horror to paranormal fantasy.

Horror is all about transgression, and thrives in the space where what fascinates us and what repels us overlap. Gothic horror especially is grounded in melodrama and the taboo, and incest is a common theme. But the incestuous elements were never really about Sam and Dean's literal relationship, it was about the way that relationship felt - intense, alluring, profane.

As a horror story, Supernatural follows long established genre conventions when it threatens to dissolve the already weak boundaries in Sam and Dean's relationship. This works because it's taboo. That subtext is supposed to make us kind of uncomfortable. Maybe we don't recognise exactly what the subtext is implying and don't understand where the discomfort is coming from, but it evokes a visceral reaction anyway. And sometimes that reaction is complicated, because what's taboo can be disgusting or shameful or terrifying, but it can also be compelling or erotic or cathartic. Horror exists to explore these kinds of contradictions and to create a powerful emotional experience. The ambiguity of Sam and Dean's relationship plays into that.

Paranormal fantasy, on the other hand, has a slightly younger audience and the emotions it engages most are excitement and wonder. The kind of fear it uses is less often creeping dread and more an immediate thrill: think walking down a dark hallway vs a hand-to-hand fight. It's morality is supposed to be cleaner. It's characters have clear roles and easily defined relationships. So Sam and Dean can still sacrifice themselves for each other, but it's no longer framed as selfish or traumatic for the one left behind; the act becomes heroic instead. And when Dean murders the lover that Sam lied to him about, it's pragmatic and distant (Amy) rather than passionate and steeped in possessive jealousy (Ruby).

I love both genres but I think Supernatural was better as gothic horror. Later on, though it still plays with gothic elements sometimes, it also tries to impose clarity onto something that was intended to question more than it answered. To me, Sam and Dean were more interesting when the world of Supernatural leaned into the ambiguity and melodrama.

As the wedding comes to an end, I want you all to know that as touching and joyful as it was, this is in fact not the happiest day of Dean's life. The happiest day of Dean's life is going to happen in about five months time. He's going to wake up with Cas in his arms, warm and relaxed from sleep, and just lie there feeling the beat of Cas' heart against his palm. He'll get up and make coffee, and Cas will follow him into the kitchen to steal a kiss while the eggs are on the stove, and Dean will grumble about being distracted but press his face into Cas' neck so he doesn't get any misguided ideas about moving away. It'll be just like the day before, more or less, and it'll finally hit Dean that he gets to keep doing this, that this is what it's going to be like every day, over and over, for as long as he wants. And standing there in his socks and an old t-shirt, thinking about the future with Cas running a hand through his bed hair? That's the happiest day of Dean's life.

So this happened, and first of all, I would like to thank each and everyone of my followers from the bottom of my heart.

Why did I call it “To be continued” ? 

Because I hate ends, I’m like that, since I was a little girl. Maybe that’s why I write stories so long... And, with our show ending, I think it’s a good time to say “No” to ends. We need things to continue, the stories, the love...

How will it work ?

I wanted to thank both readers and writers so there will be 2 things : 

My part : Since I started writing, I had A LOT of people asking me for sequels of many stories... And I never really did it (sorry), because I always had something else to write. Well, to celebrate my “To be continued” project, I decided to finally write a sequel of one of my one shots. And YOU are going to chose which one.

I created a POLL : WHICH STORY SHOULD I WRITE A SEQUEL FOR ? 

The votes are possible until Halloween.

Your part : Is a writing challenge. As the idea is to celebrate the never ending of stories, I will give you prompts that sound that ends. You have to use those “ends” as the FIRST sentence of your story (or at least in the very beginning.

So.... what are your thoughts on spn 11X17 "Red Meat"? 😉

An anon after my own heart! Brace yourselves, it’s a long one, sorry.

Red Meat is my comfort episode. I watch it when I’m feeling down, or when I need an escape. Sometimes I forget that Andrew Dabb is one of the writers because the episode is so brother -- and Sam in general -- positive. It’s definitely one of my favorite episodes, one that I will never get over. It’s one of those episodes that if I see anything about it on my dash, it’s an immediate reblog.

So, let’s recap, highlights mostly, yes?

The episode literally starts out mid-battle, which is cool on its own, but Sam is so incredibly badass. His high kick, and then headbutting the werewolf, just-- GAH. I can never get enough of badass Sam Winchester, okay?

Sam gets shot within two minutes, and if any of you know me, you know that hurt!Sam or Sam whump of any kind is my motherfucking jam. He’s my favorite character, whom I’ve loved for half of my life, and any time he’s in anguish it brings me life. Not because I enjoy seeing him hurt, but because I love when Dean worries about him.

Dean kills the werewolf that shot Sam before Sam even hit the ground, then he was at Sam’s side and digging the bullet out. Dean worrying about Sam literally feels like my life force repleting.

I also love how the scenes are played out of order. I like the aspect of that. Flashing back to Sam telling Dean about the case and Dean being reluctant. Their roles really revered, huh? It used to be Sam saying they should continue with hunting down the big bad and not going on random hunts, now Sam wants to keep on saving people on those random hunts, to keep them busy when they’re stumped on how to beat the current big bad.

In the second cabin, Corbin suggests they keep going “those of us who can” and Dean whirls on him so fast with the “what’d you say?”

Pure, unadulterated, protective big brother. The you suggest we leave my brother, I’ll fucking kill you big brother look. The I know over a hundred ways to kill a man big brother look. The no one fucks with Sammy big brother look.

Dean shoves Corbin, then, ever the selfless man Sam Winchester is, Sam suggests they leave him, get Corbin and Michelle to safety, and then Dean can come back for him. Dean’s reaction, again, is pure big brother and I love it so much. He wants to carry Sammy. My whole heart. T.T

Dean fighting with branches sticking off a tree trunk, angrily hitting the tree, then stopping for a moment to breathe and calm himself because he knows losing it won’t help Sam.

Calming himself down before he gets back to the cabin. T.T

Sam -- dying, short of breath, wheezing -- begs Corbin to go find Dean so they can leave without him. Sam has never once put himself before others, even now when he should because of how hurt he is, and how much blood he is losing, and still he doesn’t. There isn’t a single character in this show more selfless than Sam, and this episode proved that.

Corbin suffocating Sam, and then Dean walking in to find Sam completely lifeless. I cry every fucking time Dean starts shaking Sam. (Not gonna lie, it gives me Simba trying to wake Mufasa vibes, and that hurts really bad, too, man.) Just, the look on Dean’s face. The heartbreak, the tears...

The way he says “Sammy?” broken, shattered.

Dean making the decision to stay and die fight since it’s because of the werewolves that he lost his little brother. This man literally cannot and will not live without his brother. It’s ingrained in his system, engraved on his bones and in his skin, that he never wants to be in a world where Sam is no longer alive. He can’t physically or emotionally endure that pain.

This is the face of a man who has given up, who doesn’t want to live because Sam isn’t, but right here, I think at the very last moment, Dean remembers that Sam would want him to save these people. So he makes his decision.

“I’m gonna come back for you, okay?” He gives Sam this broken, quarter smile, then says, “I promise.” Then the shaky way he repeats “okay” two more times, then pats Sam on the chest and gets up fucking shatters me in a million pieces.

His last look at Sam before leaving him... with the tears! It literally makes me tear up. This whole episode is just chock full of painful pining.

Dean punches a sheriff! I still don’t understand why he didn’t just say “my brother’s body is in a cabin in the middle of the woods and I need to get back to him” but this is Dean, and Winchesters never really do anything the easy way. I do enjoy him angrily punching a sheriff because he wants to get back to Sammy, though. It’s a highlight, okay.

Then! As if this episode didn’t already give us the gift of badass!Sam and hurt!Sam and pining!Dean! It gives us the ultimate proof that Sam is the Juliet to Dean’s Romeo! It’s canon! Canon, I say! Canon! Dean kills himself with pills to talk to Billie -- to make a deal, to sacrifice himself, anything to bring Sam back -- and roundabout the exact same time, Sam wakes up!

Dean: “Tell the doc to bring me back if she can... if not, no hard feelings.” Dean literally does not care if he lives or dies! He just wants Sam! Be still, my heart. The man pines for his little brother, and his little brother alone.

The whole exchange with Billie:

“We need to talk about Sam.”

“What about Sam?”

“I need him back.”

“Back?”

“Stop playing. Look, you got him, I need him, let’s make a deal.”

“Pass.”

Then we have Dean saying that Sam’s the only one that can stop the Darkness. It just. It feels so good to hear Dean say that, okay. Sam being recognized in any light is just very important to me.

“It’s cute, though, you pretending to save Sam for the greater good when we both know you’re doing it for you. You can’t lose him.” That’s it, that’s the whole show.

“I’m asking you... I’m begging you, please. Bring him back... Bring him back and take me instead.” I’m sorry, I can’t hear you over codependent brothers.

Then! Such glorious, such beautiful, such badass hurt!Sam! Gets himself on his feet and takes on not one, but two werewolves! With all the blood he’s lost, and the immense pain he’s in, he literally fights for his life and wins! There is not a more badass character on the planet, and I would give my life to protect that truth as gospel.

He steals their pickup, gets to the Impala, and calls Dean who literally just heard from Billie that Sam wasn’t dead. Also, can I just say that I really do like Billie? She is cool as all fuck.

Sam practically falling out of the truck is one of my favorite things. His legs move like a newborn fawn as he stumbles over towards the Impala, towards safety and Dean.

The unadulterated relief on Dean’s face when he hears Sam’s voice. God, I love these brothers so fucking much. They love each other so fucking much. I can’t believe Dabb wrote an entire Wincest episode, wow. Such a goddamn gift.

Then the panic on Dean’s face once again when he loses signal with Sam. And honestly the way Sam can even see straight and drive himself to the urgent care is phenomenal in and of itself. Is there anything this man cannot do? I think not!

The Sam saves Dean, shooting Corbin before finally giving in to the pain and collapsing. I will forever love the way he falls to the ground, the way his legs just kind of give out and he just hits the floor is amazing to me. I wish I could make gifs because I’d fucking gif the way he falls. It’s both graceless and graceful at the same time, if that makes any sense.

 “I watched the man I love die... there’s no normal after that.” Dean feels her words more than anyone else, apart from Sam. Because he’s seen Sam die multiple times, and even though Sam is alive, Dean’s still not normal, he’s still not fixed. He gets that. He knows that a part of him will always be broken just because he’s watched Sam die, more than once. He’s never, ever going to be over losing Sam, even when Sam’s standing right beside him. Not to make light of the situation, but this made me think of the “Stop telling everyone I'm dead!” “I can still hear his voice” meme.

Dean helping Sam down the stairs with a hand on his back brings me the utmost joy. If I could gif, I’d make a gif of that, too.

Sam asking what Dean did when he thought Sam was dead, and giving him this ridiculously adorable squinty face!:

His little “I know you did something stupid because you’re making jokes” squint. Always sees right through his big brother.

I’m sorry for the lack of Sam caps. This episode was literally gigantic amounts of pining!Dean. He literally just wanted to be with Sam the entire episode, and Dean’s emotional anguish because he lost Sammy is such an important part of the episode. So many brother moments without the brothers being near each other. I will love this episode until the day I die and even then I will carry it with me into the afterlife to play on repeat forever and ever.

Reporting in from Paleyfest

I have returned from Paleyfest (and some drinks with friends afterwards so sorry for the delay)! It was a great experience - the crowd was psyched and it was all super fun. I’m glad you all got the livestream so you can enjoy the whole panel too. I’m actually pretty surprised that there wasn’t some kind of announcement made, either about possible Season 14 (although Singer alluded to it with “maybe we’ll go there next season” it’s not a confirmation and he could just be assuming) or about Wayward. It seemed like with this much PR going on there would be something substantial to promote BUT the crossover ep itself is a big deal and a long time in the making so I guess it was the occasion.

Speaking of the crossover episode, I’m going to break the rules (or the very polite request that they gave us) to not spoil it for anyone else. @tinkdw asked me to and I’m guessing there are other people out there who’d like to know some the details in advance. (I’m also not a member of the press or anything or else I’d have more qualms about making public stuff they asked to keep on the DL since it would be job-related.)

SO - I am putting my thoughts on the episode below a cut. If you read on, know that I will spoil the whole plot and also give you my initial analysis of it from the perspective I usually have (Destiel-positive, endgame-positive). And if you’d rather not spoil, just scroll on.

(I’ll reblog once it airs.)

***SPOILERS BELOW THE CUT LIKE WOAH***

I loved this episode!! It was a ton of fun. It was slapstick and silly but did some heavy lifting too. Honestly, it worked the way a lot of our favorite crack episodes did and alluded to at least one of them explicitly (”Changing Channels,” obvs, and I think there may have been more subtle references to others). 

I’m too tired to do a full meta analysis but here’s a kind of bullet recap, first of the most plot-based elements:

The plot turns on the fact that the Scooby Doo world, suddenly, ends up functioning like the world Sam and Dean inhabit. The boys enter the cartoon assuming all usual cartoon rules would apply (and Dean’s ready to have a rollicking good time with them) only to discover that the first murder in the haunted house is real. Ghosts are real. Death is real. Sam wants to tell the Scooby gang about it from the get-go but Dean wants to protect them and preserve their innocence. 

It’s already obviously about childhood, and losing it, but Dean makes it explicit by talking about how much he loved Scooby Doo because no matter where their dad had dragged them it would always be on. They were his friends and constant companions. He is really being thrown into the best part of his childhood....and you can see why it would be the best because it’s probably his fantasy and deepest wish that the ghosts, demons, etc. of the world he inhabits would turn out just to be bad guys in masks, death wouldn’t be real, etc. It’s Dean safe place in childhood because it takes his actual life (ghost hunting) and makes it safe and even fun. Dean wants to keep his safe place safe and is shocked and horrified when the rules of his universe invade.

It’s Sam who wants to tell them the truth about monsters from the word “go” even before it’s been revealed that death can come to Scooby Doo. (Dean laments, heartbreakingly, that it doesn’t matter if he dies...what’s important is that they make sure Scooby doesn’t die because clearly he’s such an innocent creature.) Sam, who did not have his childhood cut as abruptly short as Dean and who did not have to seek solace in a cartoon world because Dean helped him make a safe space in the real world, doesn’t see the point of lying about ghosts being real. Dean, who worked to keep Sam safe from this knowledge for YEARS of his own stunted childhood by acting as a parent, does want to keep the gang in the dark because he wants them to retain their innocence. It’s a huge lampshade to the different experiences Sam and Dean had as children and as sons.

They do eventually have to tell the Scooby gang and, wonderfully, it induces an existential crisis in them. Watching Daphne question the existence of God based on what she has inferred about the afterlife is amazing. It is not what I expected. Dean brings them back from the brink by reminding them of all the good work they had done before.

I’m going to tell the ending now and then double back to some other observations: the phantom they are chasing is the ghost of a small boy who is being manipulated, through a cursed object (a pocket knife given to him by his beloved father before he died), by an unscrupulous man (the real estate agent who we met in the beginning) who unleashes the boy’s anger on whoever he chooses for his own purpose...to scare people off of property he wants to buy. This way, the villain of a typical Scooby episode actually becomes the villain of this SPN episode...the evil real estate developer. 

Before heading back to their world, where they burn the pocket knife and free the ghost, Dean convinces Sam and Cas to lie to the Scooby gang and tell them that they were right initially--ghosts aren’t real. He goes so far as to stage the unmasking of the cartoon villain (the one from the original Scooby episode) and helps them to explanations involving wires, cornstarch blood, etc. Sam is grumpy about it but does it anyway. It’s crucial to Dean that they leave the Scooby gang as they found them and not saddle them with the world the Winchesters live in.

Let me just reiterate...the ghost that has been terrorizing them is frightened little boy. Who kept a pocket knife (much like the one we see being used to carve the Winchester’s initials into the Impala) as a token of his dead father. His father is symbolized and memorialized by a weapon. The weapon is the object the little boy is tied to and that another man--a bad man--can use to manipulate him into hurting others because “I just get so angry sometimes.” To be free, the knife (weapon, father’s legacy) has to be burned. There are closeups on a very sad Dean while this happens (some sad Sam and Cas too).

It is blindingly obvious that the little boy, who is wreaking havoc on the cartoon safe space of his childhood, represents Dean. To stop the destruction Dean has to let something go (he starts the episode referencing Elsa and EXPLICITLY SAYING THIS LINE I CAN’T EVEN). Something that is keeping him angry. Something that is tied to his father. Something that can be used to manipulate him, employed as a weapon to hurt other innocent people (Mark of Cain/Demon Dean plot lines). Dean is full of anger and of self-loathing and it’s coming from the same source. That source is toxic masculinity. Let it go, Dean. Let it go.

Is it also tied to issues of sexuality? I think so. I’ll reflect a little bit below, but I wanted to do the whole plot-based analysis first. 

And now the less plot-based stuff:

Ok, so can the ghost represent repressed sexuality/a different form of masculinity? SO MUCH YES. Point one: Cas is the only one who stops to take a look at the ghost and is thisclose to seeing through it’s big ol’scary disguise and finding a vulnerable child. He stops and squints at it, Cas-style, and says “I’ve never seen a ghost wear such a ridiculous costume. Unless...” and then he reaches out to it, starting to push aside the veil only to be pulled away. Now if that isn’t metaphorically precisely what Cas did, and does, for Dean and his performing facade I will buy a hat so that I can eat it. 

Point two, there is a scene where the ghost is chasing everyone through a series of doors on either side of a hallway (you know the scene...they run across the hallway, doors open and shut on either side, feet flying everywhere). They successfully shut the ghost in a closet with iron chains, though it’s close to breaking out. Daphne presses her body up against the door to hold it. Dean checks her out very obviously in a way that is both superfluous to and inconsistent with the plot. This means that the silhouette of a conventionally sexy woman is QUITE LITERALLY holding the closet door closed on the ghost. Metaphorically, it shows how Dean is able to use his attraction to conventionally sexy women to hold back what’s haunting him...attraction to men, ideas about a certain type of masculinity. Does it work? BIG FAT NO. The ghost breaks out anyway. (<Puts on professor cap> Have you guys read “The Beast in the Closet”? It’s by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick and is about "intense male homosocial desire as at once the most compulsory and the most prohibited of social bonds.” It’s about Henry James’s work but I think you would all dig it. <Takes off professor cap.>)

I wanted to start with that because I can tell that people are going to be very upset about Dean’s excessive flirtation with/pursuit of Daphne. And, yeah, I almost injured my eyes by rolling them so hard at some of the things he says. BUT THAT’S THE POINT. What he’s saying is a child’s idea of how a grown man would act with a woman he likes. And it bears a great deal of similarity to how Dean does act sometimes. We call it performing!Dean and wonder to what extent Dean is conscious of his performing. Given this episode I’d say..maybe .not that conscious? I feel like the overstated heterosexual dudebroness was done specifically to give us an over-exaggerated literal cartoon version of heterosexual Dean to compare to regular Dean so that anyone who doesn’t know Dean performs in his own life will have a lens through which to see it.

Also, Daphne is his childhood crush. OF COURSE he’s going to act like a moron around her. If I encountered [insert childhood TV crush here...for me it was Kevin from “The Wonder Years” for whatever reason] I’d act dumb as fuck! But you have to remember that she represents innocence for him...it’s established that all the Scoobies do (heh - puns!). Even if he’s kissing her hand or putting an arm around her or whatever there is no danger there, just like there’s no danger in the ghosts. Sexuality to Dean isn’t scary in Scooby Doo because it’s simple: it’s just a girl he likes. Except, just like how the ghosts are also dangerous, the love plot isn’t going to be that simple or that straightforward (heh - straight). You see where I’m going. Dean would rather be in a universe ghosts weren’t real because it’s safer and easier and kind of a fantasy land but they ARE real and he will have to deal with them; Dean would also rather be in a world where he was a suave, irresistible ladies’ man because it’s safer and easier and a kind of fantasy....but he’s not. Jensen even said so in his interview. Granted, Jensen’s comment may have just meant that Dean’s not suave like he thinks. But the actual episode draws a parallel that’s pretty damn clear.

Another reason to not worry: Daphne is zero interest in Dean at all. She has negative interest in Dean. Her lack of interest in Dean has created a void that is sucking all the air out of the room. She may not even know that Dean is hitting on her. She is so focused on Fred that no one else exists for her as a romantic interest. They are so obviously a pair, even though they are never shown to be together as a couple explicitly. <Stares directly into the camera like I’m on The Office.> Can Dean not see that? Is he blind? Well, he does see it, but he thinks Daphne is “settling” for Fred who represents a kind of masculinity that makes him uncomfortable (more in a sec). In point of fact, no one is romantically interested in Dean in this episode...unlike Sam who gets a lot of appreciation (and an eventual kiss) from Velma.

 As for Fred, Dean begins by really hating him (so much that Sam remarks on it) and when pressed about why he attributes it to Fred’s self-confidence despite things like his “stupid ascot.” Dean comes to like and admire Fred and, ultimately, have the confidence to wear an ascot himself BECAUSE HE LIKES IT. It didn’t make Fred less of a man. It doesn’t make Dean less of a man to wear it with his plaid shirt. Fred helps Dean along the way to some self-acceptance. It’s nice. Fred is there to serve as a contrast to Dean’s overblown notions of what is “masculine” and offer another form of masculinity that is, manifestly, still appealing to the ladies.

Now, remember the Scooby Doo universe doesn’t have sex in it. It’s a cartoon. And they bend those rules only the tiniest bit here. All of Dean’s advances and even his jokes are PG. That innocence on the part of the Scoobies is played for laughs, Daphne remarking that Dean is silly for not knowing that “boys and girls don’t sleep in the same room” for example, but it’s also integral to the plot. (There are some other jokes too and, for a glorious second, I thought that they were legitimately going to reveal that Daphne and Velma were a thing but sadly not.) No one would want to ruin the Scooby universe by telling them about sex...not even Dean. Again, it contains a child’s conception of relationships.

I’m imagining some people will also be upset about how the episode treats Cas. I was especially stung that, right at the outset, Dean says flat-out that “Cas is basically a talking dog.” I made a noise of indignation that made people look at me. BUT let’s also remember how much Dean loves that talking dog. He’d die for him. He wants to protect him at any cost. He doesn’t want to spoil his innocence. So, yeah, that’s not a nice thing to say but it’s also not the whole story. Cas is grouped with Scooby and Shaggy the whole time and he bonds with them, SMILING (ALERT ALERT CARTOON CASTIEL KNOWS HOW TO SMILE) AND LAUGHING when he has to leave. He thanks them for showing him the importance of humor even in dangerous times. I think it’s a good lesson for Cas and his real affection for them reminds me of what a soft character he is inside, wanting to get a cat or save monkeys or keep bees. That’s been missing from Cas lately (even though I do LOVE bamf!Cas) so maybe this will help him recall it.

I want to say again that Cas is the one who can see through the ghost and its “ridiculous costume.”

Interestingly, both his entrances (his first appearance after Fred and Dean take off to drag race; when he reunites with the boys in the haunted house) frame him as a scary villain. The first is from behind and you just see the coat billowing out (though this did remind me of the girl running the drag race in “Grease” which...lol); the second he’s silhouetted in a window, approaching it in the rain, and is then covered with a sheet before he’s “unmasked” by Dean and discovered to be a friend. This is...pretty much Castiel’s character progression always. Looks like a threat but is discovered not to be.

Once they get back to their regular world Dean makes a remark about how that was the most fun he’s ever had “including that time with the Cartwright twins.” Cas studies him and asks “What did you do with the Cartwright twins?”. There’s a long beat in which Dean looks shifty and grins and shakes his head and turns away. Sam says “I don’t think I want to know.” Cas says nothing. Cas does want to know. This is new and part of a general progression that @amwritingmeta wrote a great analysis of where Cas is becoming able to think something like Forget that sacred oath...I must know what Dean did with those twins.

There was probably more, you guys, but it’s super late for my poor body clock. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you think would like it but bear in mind that a) there are MASSIVE SPOILERS, b) this is just my interpretation of the episode, and c) I only saw it live once so my details may be wrong. 

I thought this as a fantastic episode the more I think about it and I’m SO EXCITED for all of you to get to see it too so I can hear your thoughts!! <3

"I love you so much... my baby brother"

It seems everyone is all wrapped up in "my baby brother" which is a sweet addition indeed, but I can't get over "I love you so much"

Dean loves people, he's told Mom and Dad he loves them, but Sam, he loves "so much" like more than anyone or anything, and WE know this, but Dean confessed it, and Sam heard him. And it was just for Sam and no one else. No "I love all of you" no other name is even brought up. Dean can't even fathom what he would do if he didn't have Sam. That " I love you so much" is everything, all 37 years and 15 seasons summed up in 5 words.

A friend of mine at work decided to start watching SPN. She wants to see for herself why these boys mean so much to me. I promised not to spoil her, and only half way through s1, she has theories and observations and it really makes me happy! She told me her theories and even though they're very wrong, i smiled because it was so much fun for me trying to figure everything out.

She asked me how i handled the end, a d i told her i was a mess. I sobbed for 2 hours straight, couldn't really function for days after, and now, 1 year later, I'm still mourning like the loss of a loved one.

Then she asked me if it was a good ending at least, unlike with Lost or GOT and i thought for a moment and said "It was perfect. It wasnt what i wanted, it wasnt what i feared, but it was what i didn't know i needed"

Sure, I sit sometimes thinking i would have done this ir that differently, but now i don't think Id change anything. Not with Carry On anyway, there's plenty with other episodes and character ends i would, but not the end of Sam and Dean's story.

Has there ever been a stronger, more true love in literature than the one between Sam and Dean?

I can't think of any.

Even in their times of bitter anger, when they felt like maybe they hated each other, it felt like "I hate you so much right now because I love you even more and it hurts!"

What does Carry On mean to me? I don't know...you tell me.

So I’m trying not to think about Dean pacing outside Sam’s door, trying to work up the nerve to approach him. He may have put his finger on the doorbell, but pulled back. “What if he tells me to get lost?”

But then I think about Sam, when he aced his LSATs and almost dialed Dean’s number 100 times. “What if he just doesn’t  care anymore?”

And then I wonder, how many times each of them said a small prayer everytime their phones rang “Please be him” or answered random “unknown callers” just in case. 

Did Dean ever write out a postcard to send Sam when he was at a location he knew Sam would like? Or did Sam ever sit through a movie he hated just because he knew Dean would love it , and for a moment they would feel close to each other again?

Did Dean ever look at a picture of the 2 of them and whisper “I didn’t mean to chase you away” or did Sam ever look at a picture and whisper “I didn’t want to leave you”

Then I imagine Dean driving around Stanford just to catch a glimpse of his brother and make sure he’s okay. And Sam feeling his heart skip a beat everytime he saw an old black car, and then break a little more when it wasn’t Dean. 

“I could just call him” they woud both say on their Birthdays, Christmas, and any time the nights were too dark and the air felt empty around them. Did they ever look up at the stars and wonder if the other was looking too?

I wonder how their hearts felt that moment they were finally in each other’s space again. Dean’s smile, Sam’s breathlessness. I wonder, did they not hug each other for fear the other would feel their heart pounding out of their chest?

I try not to think of these things..... but all too often I fail miserably. 💔😭

Hey Y’all! I am so happy I got such a HUGE response from people who would like to be part of this!! 

On 8/23/21 everyone who loves Sam and Dean’s on screen “marriage” is invited to attend this 8 day celebration!! 8x23 Sacrifice is commonly referred to as the Winchester Wedding, when they committed to each other in a Church in front of a witness (Crowley) and the brother’s dynamic changed from there. 

This wont be strictly Wincest, we will celebrate their canon relationship too, so if Wincest isn’t quite your jam, you wont be left out! I will simply ask that any sexual posts, use appropriate tags in addition to the event tag #Mr & Mr Winchester 8th. More info and Q&A under the cut....

This event will focus on Sam and Dean’s late seasons (s8 and up) relationship when they actually lived like a married couple. I have often said they are each others spouces in every important way. They choose to live together, share responsibilities, share chores and finances, cook for each other, confide in each other, they co-parent Jack, they’ve stopped leaving each other (after s10) depend on each other for everything and above all, love each other so deeply even death can’t separate them (Death tried to and Dean killed him lol) For better or worse, sickness and health, poverty or wealth, good times and bad, they stick together. I'm new here, so I don't have the depth of experience with the "destiel disdain" and homophobia everyone always brings up alongside this topic, but has anyone ever considered that Jensen has previously dodged questions out of concern for his job security, and not out of contempt for the ship or his interpretation of Dean Winchester?

From what I understand, Creation Ent were the ones denying "destiel" questions all this time. Now that could have been a request from the actors, it could have been a request from the network, it could have been a request from the showrunners - do we actually know for certain?

I think people can be very quick to jump down the throats of people at the forefront when they're not necessarily the ones making the decisions. I see convention appearances as "customer service" jobs. The actors are paid to be there, it is their job. They have bosses to report to and company policies to abide by just as the same your friendly neighbourhood retail worker does. Their job is to come out on stage (or into the autograph hall or wherever), smile at the fans and answer their questions in the least brand-damaging way possible.

While the show is still being made and airing, brand-damage losses are very, very real. And Jensen was one of the main cast; he was a large percentage of the brand. Every one of his appearances will have been calculated against his own self-preservation and cautious nature along with his interpretation of the guidelines given by the execs.

Am I saying he's perfect and hasn't made mistakes? Of course not! There have been some messy panels where he has been obviously not in the right frame of mind and those internal calculations have been made poorly. But I don't actually believe that he is, or even has ever been, anti-destiel or anti-interpretations about Dean's sexuality.

One of the main examples I have ever seen about Jensen being anti-destiel is the changing of the line in the crypt in season 8 when "I love you" became "I need you" because Dean would never tell Cas that he loves him. I don't believe this is Jensen saying that Dean doesn't love Cas; just that he wouldn't explicitly say it. Dean barely knows how to tell Sam he loves him - he's not that guy, and Jensen knew it.

Now that the show is over, there seems to be more freedom to discuss things than there ever has been before. DenverCon will be the first time Jensen has appeared in a convention capacity since the finale; there is absolutely no way to know how this is going to go down until it happens. I am nervous about it, and concerned for him as I discussed yesterday.

Am I hopeful he answers destiel questions as openly and chaotically as Misha has been recently? Absolutely! Will I be disappointed if those answers aren't what I expect? Probably. Will I use that disappointment to drag his name through mud? Fuck no! He arguably knows "Dean Winchester" (as a concept, as a character, as a brand) better than anyone else ever can or will, and I respect his opinions.

But beyond that, he is a real human being, who is just as entitled to his feelings as anyone else, and whether that puts him on one side of the fandom fence or the other or even leaves him hung up right in the middle, that is his choice.

On my November 5th, I took a drive to Cockle Bay. The tide was out and the sky was sympathetically in despair.

I wore my anti-possession scarf and my Cas tie charm on my necklace. I lit some candles to manifest good vibes for this weekend’s con and celebrations, and watched 15x18 under a tree. It was cathartic in a way I didn’t quite understand (even if the mothers with their kids on the nearby playground were looking at me like I’d lost my mind).

I listened to my destiel derangement syndrome playlist in my car and contemplated how much this all means. Not just to me, but to so many people. People who need better representation. People who need to feel loved. People who expect better.

And maybe my candles will work, maybe they won’t. Maybe it’s just a pipe dream that we will ever truly win. But despite everything that has happened since, despite the erasure and censoring that continues to happen, Supernatural’s 325th episode was a monumental occasion that we must always celebrate and never forget.

There are too many subtleties in the episode for cast and crew to have not intended us to feel this deeply. I refuse to believe that anyone who was physically on set the day the confession was filmed is actively or willingly trying to repress or deny the emotion. There will always be people trying to silence us; we just have to be louder than them.

It is now the afternoon of November 6th for me. The sky has cleared, and I am hopeful. I’m hopeful that we will continue to make small wins and have our voices heard. I’m hopeful that we will continue to band together in this community we have found through the love of two beautiful idiots and their love for each other.

To Dean and Castiel Winchester! Wherever they are, I know they are together and happy! 💚💙

A list of Jackles related things I choose to remember from Denver Con 2021:

1. He changed to Saturday for “professional reasons” which we are then led to believe is because of Rust’s shooting schedule. But then explicitly stated that Rust’s schedule is Wed-Sun. Why does Sat off make sense here?

2. He hugged Misha on Friday night and looked happy to tell the story.

3. Every single photo op I’ve seen of him and Misha together they’ve had at least one point of contact, going as far as holding each other even with Jared wedged in between them.

4. Conversely, most of the Jared ops I’ve seen looked forced and/or staged, further fueling PR ‘brothers’ not necessarily friends.

5. (I feel that, and I’m happy to be wrong) his instant jump to “the same” when confronted with female!Jack was a good indication that he is in fact an LGBT+ ally. (The comment at the end is open to interpretation, and I choose to believe he’s either saying that people would look at Dean weirdly for hanging out with a young girl, or that he’d be more protective of her (see: Claire). Even as poorly worded joke, the fact that it wasn’t the first reaction I think is at least a partial win)

6. He stated that Dean didn’t know Cas was in love with him until the confession, but has left us to fill in the blanks on whether/when Dean fell in love with Cas. His comment about “heavenly” love makes it beyond romantic as human comprehension, but doesn’t necessarily imply romance isn’t part of that.

7. He was clearly uncomfortable with Jared’s non-sensical rambling, reverting to corporate buzzwords to wrap up the panel quickly and storm away, indicating to me that he was just as fucking livid as the rest of us.

Mr Jensen “read between the lines” Ackles will never be as straightforward as Mr Misha “chaos” Collins. Expecting a moment like “how long have those two guys wanted to fuck each other” was unrealistic, and I think we got the best we could expect from a shit situation.

Ok, it's been over 24 hours, and I still have thoughts about this...

It is becoming more and more necessary for Jensen to break his "sexy silence" as heller-Misha gives us more and more breadcrumbs about destiel, but at the same time, I feel so, so very sorry for him.

I do not for a second believe that Misha is keeping this chaos alive without Jensen's blessing. They have discussed this, and probably multiple times. However, Jensen is kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place. No matter what he says it's going to be the wrong thing to someone. And unfortunately, this "family" can be very good at attacking people who they perceive as "wrong". His self-preservation knows no bounds.

He was raised in Texas... In the 80s... That has to mean something. That's not something you just turn off. And he clearly loves his wife and his kids, so he won't want anything to jeopardize that. Now I believe Dee is in on it and knows exactly how he feels and what's going on, but he still has them to think about. And the rest of his career...

Misha on the other hand was raised to be very progressive. Anyone with Google and some time on their hands can dig in and know more intimate details about him than they will possibly ever know about members of their own family. He's arguably more comfortable in his skin and is notoriously unapologetic about how he makes other people feel for speaking his truth.

Cockles is the epitome of worlds colliding, and the way they tackle their own relationship, mingled with their relationships with others, and their perceptions of destiel as a whole is very reflective of who they each are as people and why we love them both so much for such polar opposite reasons.

Now I'm not saying he's right to be keeping silent, and a huge part of me is hoping for a very juicy DenverCon, but I get the fear. He's a public figure in a world that has only really just got into LGBT rights. He's in a happy hetero marriage and absolutely adores his kids. Bi-erasure is still very much a thing, and if the perception beyond the spn family was that he has (or has ever had feelings) for his male co-worker there could be devastating effects. Assholes are loud, and their volume is damaging to careers, families, and many other things.

Jensen Ackles is cautious by nature, you can see it on his face and in his interactions, and he will be weighing up his public image against his private life. Obviously, his silence is deafening, and he needs to say something one way or other. Having Misha lay groundwork these past few weeks will be helping, and having Misha there when he's in Denver will help, but at the end of it all, I just hope he's ok.

If anyone needs a hug, it's Jensen Ackles; he has the weight of the world on his shoulders, and it makes me sad.

I appreciate how Eddie and Vee are trying to work together/cohabitate and how it’s just not working and making Eddie look like he’s talking to himself and not really keeping it together after the life foundation.

Also love that they brought up the fact that Eddie is a POI regarding the bodies and the explosion of the rocket. Also wish Mulligan had a photo of the lobster tank scene for the facial expression Eddie would have made and that alone. It’s a nice continuity piece and reminds us that these actions have consequences and grounds this fantastical story in reality

How tf does Frances know how to drive and fight? She was kept in like a 10x10 cell most of her life?

Fuck the death penalty. I still don’t think that anyone deserves the death penalty and as Eddie brought up to Venom, not everyone convicted of a crime is actually guilty. Regardless if they’re guilty or not though, we should not be allowed to decide if someone lives or dies. Do not come into my DMs or my notes clowning about this I’m not willing to debate it.

In comic canon Carnage is absolutely supposed to be stronger than Venom, but this was a bit ridiculous. I mean the hacking, the twister thing? That’s ridiculous even by my standards. Also: would have appreciated if Red had been coded as a woman and hated Frances not because she’s dangerous to them but because she was another woman in Cletus’s life. Its contrived and misogynistic, I know, but I would have liked more comic accuracy considering so much of the movie feels like a comic. 

The scene! With Eddie deciphering Cletus’s postcard! <33333 I wish they’d done more of that and done more with Eddie and Cletus being parallels of a shitty upbringing and generally Cletus seeing Eddie as a kindred spirit. That was visually so interesting and the fact that they never did that again makes me want to SCREAM. Am I being an English major and a storyteller about this? Yes. Do I think it’s a good idea, yes obviously why else would I put this out there?

Oh for fucks’s sake if you’re going to make jokes about Eddie being raised Catholic and having a shithead for a father give us more information about that. They had a crappy build up to that and that’s not something you can reasonably drop in the third fucking act during the final battle.

Overall, pacing was a little fast and there’s a few gaping plot holes but it was fun to watch and it was very gay so 7.5/10 on my scale

Welcome to Mama’s 100 Quotes of Supernatural Challenge!!!

Wow! I am truly amazed at all of you wonderful people in Tumblr land. After 1 year on here I have 2000 followers!!!! (OK, so I know my blog is not a big ole bomb of excitement the majority of time but I am still tickled pink!)

So to celebrate my 1 year blog anniversary, I am going to do a 2-part thing. I put a poll out a few weeks ago to see what all of you would like and the 2 popular responses were a challenge and for me to do some more blog promo’s. You asked so shall you receive!!

I have searched and searched for some of the most memorable, funniest, best quotes from our beloved characters of Supernatural. Below the cut you will find the list. I have tried to include at least 1 quote from just about everyone (well, from a whole bunch of them anyways) but the majority of the quotes do belong to our sexy Dean, Sam, and Castiel! So keep on reading to see the list and the rules for this challenge!!

The rules are about as basic and easy as I can make them:

*This is a follower celebration so obviously, I would need you to be following me. However, if you have stumbled upon this challenge and would like to join, it is so super easy…. Just go click that follow button up there on the right!

*I need you to send me an Ask with your 1st and 2nd choice of quotes. It will be first come, first serve. BUT if by some holy miracle all 100 get taken, I am sure I can come up with some more to add to this list. AND you can chose up to 3 quotes if you would like to work ALL THREE into one story. (As a side note, if after a week I still have a ton of quotes not chosen, I will modify the challenge a little and allow you to send in your choice of quote/character)

*As for you fic, just keep it in the SPN fandom and make sure to highlight your quote(s) wherever you place it in the story. Just in case there is any confusion, the person you chose a quote from does NOT have to be the main character in your fic. For example, you may just really like a particular quote listed here from, say Balthazar, but you have a Dean x Reader fic in mind. That’s perfectly fine. Just make sure to have Balthazar in your story (with the quote) somewhere.

spn alignment chart (round table)

So, I’ve gotten quite a few interesting answers and asks to my flawed attempt at making an SPN alignment chart (thank you, guys!), so I decided to pool them all in one post. I’m putting this stuff under a cut because it’s likely to be long and I guess not everyone’s interested, but you’re of course welcome to reblog and add your own ideas.

Just as a caveat - I’m an idiot, and I only now realize, thanks to one of the asks I received, that this exercise may not be, in the end, very useful. An alignment chart is, really, an extremely schematic way of looking at things, and probably not the best way to describe characters we’ve known for years.

I'm thinking about your alignment chart and the various challenges people are making to it, and I was wondering whether you think intentions or actions are more important when it comes to the characters? How about what the character would think of themselves vs. how they are interpreted by other characters? Does a character's personal view of themselves mean nothing if you don't agree with their insights? Castiel, for instance, has certainly challenged his sense of right and wrong over the years but I don't think he ever stopped wanting to do the right thing as his ultimate goal. I do think his obsession with keeping the Winchesters alive at all costs is wrapped in his concept of doing the right thing, because that is one of the only unambiguous correct choice he ever made. He trusts Dean and Sam to do the right thing, so keeping them alive is Cas doing the right thing. (I don't agree with this, but I do think that's Cas' thinking). His intent is good, even if his actions aren't always. (via @anon)

Yes - you are so right about all of this. This is mostly why this discussion, for me, will end with this post - because ultimately, real world building is too complex to use an alignment chart. Thanks for pointing it out, anon. I liked the idea of updating the chart because I’d seen so many versions of it (and, interestingly, it’s mostly Sam who moves around - but then, we already knew he’s a mysterious character), but I now realize all of this may be a bit pointless. Making an alignment chart may be useful for RPGs, when you need to know important stuff about characters you’re only just making up, but if we’re talking really developed fictional characters, then - ideally - they become like real people, which means it’s not possible to reduce them to these basic traits.

As I said here, I’m struggling to see Lucifer as a chaotic anything. Sure, this is what he says, but if he looks at his actions - he’s deliberately put himself into situations that would give him love, adoration, obedience, and an audience. Even his creation of a Nephilim is more the symptom of a midlife crisis than anything else. Plus, my understanding is that a true chaotic evil would accept damage to themselves, as long as the hero is harmed in some way. This doesn’t seem to be the case with Lucifer, who’s doing all he can to save himself and not sent back in the Cage. On the other hand, it’s also hard to define what a chaotic evil even is, and if any character fits the characteristics (I’ve been thinking about villains all morning, but I can always find a reason why I’m not quite happy with classifying them as chaotic evil). Here’s an interesting discussion on the subject, but it’s mostly about videogames characters I know nothing about. This is an excellent blog entry on the subject, but, again, I can’t find any characters who really fit - maybe more someone like the guys from Natural Born Killers - but they were inspired by real people, so I’m not sure it counts.

Personally, I’d switch Mary and Cas. Mary has been making far more decisions that aren’t ‘good’ ie nearly killing Jody, or working with the BMoL to wipe out monsters so that her kids can have a 'normal’ life, which to me seems more neutral than good. Cas, on the other hand... Sure, this season has seen him making more decisions closer to true neutral (killing Billie to save the Winchesters), but I believe that he is too inherently good to be overshadowed by this. He's going back to Heaven, despite the fact that this probably won't end up helping him personally, because he thinks he and the angels can help with the nephilim (although what happens with that will be the true test of everyone's alignments ah I refresh my dash and see your post about Cas just after I sent you that ask! What you say is true, Cas has made many decisions to save the Ws that screw others over, but on the other hand, many of Cas' decisions have been about saving humanity (and not just Dean lol) from the angel's self righteousness and haven't solely revolved around the Ws. For example, all of the various times he's gone back to Heaven to try to repair the messes/prevent the apocalypses (ex S5-stopping Raphael, S9) (via @quiescentcastiel)

Mary was a big problem, and I’m not happy about I classified her. I sort of think that, even after an entire season, I simply don’t know enough about her motivations to put her anywhere. Because here you see it again - yes, maybe she’s hunting to make the world a safer place for her kids, but the thing is, she likes it. She relishes it. And not those other parts of the hunt, which the BMoL helpfully took care of so she wouldn’t have to (the ‘get this’, the ‘is this even a case’, the asking around and talking to terrified witnesses and putting the puzzle together); no, what Mary seems to like, whatever she says, is the killing. Unlike Ketch, she’s not a sadist, so she doesn’t draw it out, and she doesn’t enjoy the pain of others, but there is still something about the kill that she likes - needs, even - and this is why, in the end, I don’t like her all that much as a person. She may tell herself she’s acting for her sons, but the thing is, given who she is, this is probably the only way she can be there for them. Sam and Dean didn’t need her to kill monsters for them, and they certainly didn’t need it back when they were infants (what if she’d been killed? with John unaware of his wife’s activities, they wouldn’t even have known what had happened to her). And I’m not saying this because she’s a woman - I mostly dislike this character trait in men as well. So, anyway, I don’t know what to make of her.

As for Cas, I’ve already said why I put him down as true neutral, but you make some good points. The thing is, though - is Cas working with the angels to truly save the world from the Nephilim (after all, he’s met another Nephilim, and the Antichrist, and both were nice, decent people and why did that never come up?) or does he realize that this will be a messy fight, especially now Dagon is involved, and since the Winchesters won’t lose interest in it any time soon, they’ll need all the help they can get? We don’t know, of course. If Cas had gone back to Heaven to fix some kind of thing that had no influence on Dean’s life whatsoever, then I might be more inclined to agree with you, but as it is, I still think the more Cas falls in love with Dean, the more his moral compass gets unbalanced and wobbly. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, of course (I think all of us would do anything to keep those we love safe, if we had the power to, so this shows Cas is simply becoming more human), but given his powers, it’s still dangerous for everybody involved.  

i’m not sure i agree with those alignments for mary and sam but the others i do. i feel like sam might be more neutral good and mary perhaps true neutral or neutral neutral but she’s trickier to pin down (via @thejabberwock)

Yep, those are two characters I really struggle with. Who even knows.

You’ve got Mr. “Make a deal, keep it” as chaotic? I agree with the neutral part, given his wavering between good and evil these days, but I would have put Crowley at Lawful Neutral, or maybe True Neutral, but he’s certainly not chaotic. (via @thayerkerbasy)

You’re right, but - I really didn’t know where else to put him. Like, in that post evil is described as ‘impeding the heroes is their main goal’, and good, of course, is about helping the hero - neither fits Crowley. Neutral is more about being selfish in some way, which I’m still not happy with, but whatever. As for the chaotic part, I simply feel Crowley’s been acting a bit erratically this season (which may be bad writing tbh). This whole ‘keeping Lucifer around’ thing - that’s almost chaotic evil territory, because Crowley wants to hurt Lucifer so badly he doesn’t much care if he himself gets killed in the process (because, yes, he may have put in place all the fail-safes ever invented, but this is Lucifer - how likely it is, really, that one of them won’t fail?). He was almost a chaotic good when he broke that lance, but a true neutral who didn’t care about anyone but himself when Sam and Dean were in that secret prison (and, again, I feel like my Crowley would have busted them out of there, but whatever). And this applies to last year too - stopping to have an orgy and kill a few people when there were a million urgent things to do - that was very chaotic evil of him, but doing his part to work with TFW, and even God, to bring down Amara - that was back into almost lawful good territory. 

I think the conclusion here is, Crowley needs his own spin-off and I want to write that.

I strongly feel that Dean is actually LG. He has a strict moral code that, while different from society’s, is still pretty inflexible. Saving people, hunting things. He’s softened on it over the years, but he doesn’t act unpredictably. I’d say Cas is more CG; he’s always trying to do the right thing but he’s lost without the guidance of Heaven. His loyalty is to the Winchesters, but his application is less than consistent. Sam is NG; he does whatever he has to do protect others, including sacrificing himself, drinking demon blood, etc. (via @destielmixtape)
