I know Amazon isn't very punk–but given its chokehold on everything, kind of unavoidable at this point, especially if you're disabled and/or immunocompromised–and Etsy has its own set of problems, but if you need denim for patches and things or other types of fabric for crafting but you feel squeamish about cutting up perfectly wearable pants and such from the thrift stores, you can get fabric scraps from both sites for fairly cheap, even sometimes on prime. They tend to come from left over factory waste or independent fabric crafters and would otherwise be thrown away, so you're saving dye and sometimes synthetic/plastic fibers from leeching into a landfill and the environment. And Etsy claims carbon neutrality (an iffy claim in general, regardless of who's making it), and some Amazon shops also claim environmentally friendly.
You can also get leather scraps on both sites, which I have done for bookbinding projects. The only problem with that was that it was a grab bag of a pound of randomized embossed upholstery fabric, some in fairly equal sizes but some truly scraps. About two thirds of it was suitable for bookbinding, but out of that only half wasn't ridiculously ugly lol. Shouldn't be too hard to get fairly uniform denim scraps tho, especially if you're embroidering them into patches

sooooooo I finally made a wallet for myself based on this super helpful tutorial (her channel has taught me a lot and her voice is so soothing!), just changed the flower into pikachu (incase no one recognized what the hell is that) cause mind you I'm a pika enthusiast
Tumblr media
anyway, I think it's not 100% perfect, like the zipper part was so uneven (?) maybe because I pulled too hard, and stupid me got wrong side of the fabric (that's why it turned out 2 different shades) but I kinda like it that way, adding some forest vibe and looking FUN (hopefully)
Tumblr media
the card part is not as smooth as I would like it to be either and I'm too tired to fix it, AND THE BINDING omg hand binding curved corner is so fucking hard I need to practice more
Tumblr media
wrapped buttons are my shit so here I made my own version
I suppose most of troubles I got when quilting came from myself not learning things in any specific order, as I was always simply diving headfirst into whatever I felt like sewing at the time then picking up certain techniques and freestyling if I made silly mistakes.
I was doing it even before I began to take up quilting seriously (about a year ago), possibly because I was born to a professional tailor. I had grown up watching my mom sew and had intuitively picked up some basic hand sewing. That helps me a lot when I'm watching thousands of tutorials on youtube, like sometimes I immediately get what they're doing without having to look too hard into explanations, so I can just fast forward to parts I'm not familiar with. Even so, there is a lot to learn and, more importantly, unlearn. I'm still making silly mistakes, but I'm having lot of FUN.
Doing all this also makes me realize what an ARTIST my mom is and how I have taken her talent for granted my whole life.

My duvet ripped in the washing machine today, so I busted out my hand sewing kit and my trusty ladder stitch and spent like two hours getting this beast stitched back together
Tumblr media
Pretty proud of how it turned out for such a jagged tear in the fabric. And not on a seam either. I joked with my roommate that I felt like a surgeon b/c of the ladder stitch, so clearly I summoned the vibes of Chase to assist me in my stitching lol.

Hey crafts side of Tumblr, how should I go about fixing this sock? I've darned a couple little holes before in the past, but the threadbare area is so big here that I'm hoping there's an easier way. Is there, or would I have to put a lot of work in to darn this?
Sorry for the foot pic by the way. It's just that this seemed like the best way to show the issue.

Just want to confirm to digital ink the surest way to entrap me into a craft.
“Can that be made, but tiny??”
The gateway drug for me while doing that quilt hop with my Mom was these little addictive beauties:
Tumblr media
42 squares of 2.5 inch precut fabric. (6.35 cm)
As a comparison, if you’re going to grab precut fabric “squares” for quilting you’re normally reaching for “fat quarters,” which are 18 x 22 inches. (~45 x 55 cm)
I saw those and I was all “Yes!!!! I can make quilts, end up with something an eighth of the size, and have an excuse to rely on hand sewing over the machine! [because i’m nuts that way…]”
The road to eternal torment, for me, is paved with miniatures you can balance on your finger and pretty fabrics….
Edit: I forgot to mention before, for anyone not wanting to click through the link, these are Mini Charm packs from the company Moda Fabrics, who also sell more traditionally sized packs of complimentary fabrics and “jelly rolls” of strips.
Things I have already actively mastered at a tiny level:
- Origami Cranes
Things I am actively working on mastering
- Amigurumi and related crochet/knitting
