I’m not sure If I’ve mentioned it here or if it’s something I’ve been keeping hush-hush, but this illustration, as well as the Jack Horner drawing, are a part of a little series! I’m planning on making an illustration, and subsequently a print, of every Shrek villain. In a previous post I tried to show how one can wildly reimagine fairytales while still being faithful to the text with a case study of Hansel and Gretel's witch in illustrations (the post is here). But I want to continue by showing an even more extreme example... Because the witch of the brothers Grimm still has a given set of traits that keep popping up and are canon (she is old, she has something wrong with her eyes, she has crutches/a cane)... But what if we look at Cinderella's fairy godmother? Now that's fascinating because... Charles Perrault does not provide any physical description. We don't know what her body looks like, what her age is supposed to be, how she is to be dressed, if she is supposed to be human-looking or otherwordly... And already classic illustrations of the tale clearly threw themselves into the open hole. It's the free market, baby! Look at all those different godmothers:
