While we’re talking about Goncharov, does anyone remember The Marmoset Chronicles?
Tumblr media
Wow, it’s really something to see everyone remember Goncharov! Similarly, does anyone remember The Marmoset Chronicles? In 1970, auteur director Laz Patillo created the first entry in what would eventually becoming an 8-movie empire of action, science fiction and surreal expressionism, with cultural impact that would go on to define filmmaking and pop culture for decades to come. Somehow, The Marmoset Chronicles is relatively forgotten today, despite the enormous impact it had - including on Scorsese!
Even as the world forgets, Moonshot remembers. In 2020, we produced The Marmoset Chronicles: A Personal Retrospective, where hosts Jay Petrequin and Kirsten Meehan spend 20 episodes talking about these movies, from The Phantom and the Wren all the way to The Plot, the Paper, and the Place We End Up. We also talk about the series’ generations of cultural relevance in early internet forum culture, its role in the Satanic Panic movement, and many more. These movies have a 50-year lineage, and Kirsten and Jay do their best to represent the very real, very factual footprint that The Marmoset Chronicles has left on the world.
The Marmoset Chronicles - A Personal Retrospective is on iTunes, Spotify and wherever else you listen to podcasts.

Zethopa - Alaine x Maxine Relationship Analysis
!!! SPOILERS FOR UNDERGROUND 80’S HORROR MOVIE ZEPOTHA!!!
TW: brief mention of car/pedestrian accident
I’ve seen a lot of controversy here about Zepotha and I’d like to break that up by giving a character analysis about Alaine, our protagonist. Alaine is dating Danny, one of the antagonists. However, it is obvious that there is someone else who is on Alaine’s mind often. This someone? Maxine.
Groundbreaking for its time, Zepotha really does lean into themes of LGBTQ+ and lets Alaine struggle with her newfound bisexuality. She battles with herself between choosing Danny or choosing Maxine. She knows the safe choice. But she also knows the choice she’d much rather follow.
When Danny is revealed to be an accomplice, it shakes Alaine to her very core. What she knew about her safe option was a lie. This mirrors how she originally feels as she starts struggling with accepting her bisexuality. She turns to the option she wants and craves. She turns to Maxine. This in itself is another breakthrough for Alaine. She realizes that how she feels is okay. It’s not something she needs to be afraid of.
Before anything can happen between Alaine and Maxine, they’re distracted by the now famous Bridge Scene. Throughout the rest of the movie, Alaine and Maxine are close. They share glances, subtle touches, but never go farther than that. However, at the end of the movie we can see Alaine hopeful in her new life after all the horrors that consumed her throughout the movie.
Before the audience can get the hope we see in Alaine’s eyes, there’s a cut to Maxine and Lydia walking down the sidewalk, laughing with each other. Out of nowhere, a car swerves off the street, striking Maxine, killing her. While the credits roll, we hear a voiceover of Alaine receiving the news. In her voice, her despair is evident.
The killing of Alaine’s love throws the realization that in the environment she lives in, there’s no hope for her to live how she wants. She can never fully explore the sexuality she’s only recently come to love. The time she lives in will never allow it to happen.
While very much “kill your gays” of Zepotha, I think it went about it fairly well. The directors and producers knew what they were doing. They called out the homophobic rhetoric of the time. They never once second guessed this decision and it made Zepotha what it is today. I’m so happy to see it getting the recognition it deserves.

For the movie meme: Natalie Dormer, Nazanin Boniadi, Alexander Siddig, KiKi Layne
Send me 2-4 actors/actresses and I’ll set my music to shuffle, pick a line from the first song that comes up, and use that as inspiration to come up with a movie that ought to exist and that features all the actors you requested!
I put my armor on, show you how strong I am I put my armor on, I'll show you that I am
(Unstoppable by Sia)
Pimpernel (Director Gina Maria Prince-Bythewood)
Lady Portia Blakeney (Natalie Dormer) hides behind the mask of a amusing, empty headed aristocrat only interested in partying and updating her instagram account to better hide her identity as The Scarlet Pimpernel, a mysterious masked hero who rescues those captured by a despotic regime for the pleasures of the regimes members.
Her wife Lady Morvarid (Nazanin Boniadi) is wondering if she will ever be able to see the woman she had married again or if the empty headed socialite is the real Portia, especially when her older brother Arman (Alexander Siddig) and younger sister Zahra (Kiki Layne) are both arrested and taken by the regime.
Will the mysterious Pimpernel be able to save them without dying herself?

Title: Tennyson's Own
After four seasons of glittering balls, giggling debutants and grandiose gentlemen, Robin Locksley (Patel), a lord by self-proclamation and clever forgery only, has got quite the operation going. He, alongside the widowed blacksmith's wife Joanna (Wokoma), the orphaned earl's son Will (Dunster), and the kitchen girl Much (Ronan) spend each London winter carefully siphoning money from the pockets of England's over-wealthy to distribute to the working class poor. Aiding and abetting their social cons is Lady Marian Aquitaine (Ashley), daughter of the King's estranged cousin and Rob's childhood friend. The group is convinced that they will have another year of easy work when a mysterious Lord operating under the title "The Lion of Oxford" moves into the old (some might say abandoned) Nottingham house on the other side of Mayfair. Determined to scope out a potential new target, Rob and Marian pose as a courting couple and enter the proverbial lion's den that is the annual ball hosted by the esteemed and infamous Lord William Wendenal (Garfield). However, in an uncharacteristic move, Wendenal quickly makes his sudden and sharp interest in Lady Marian clear in no uncertain terms. Until now, Robin has seen Wendenal as a foe in the abstract and principle only -- he is a cold-hearted, exacting, and ruthless man who willingly harms those at his station, let alone beneath it. Now, Rob is faced with the reality that their operation may be at far higher risk than previously thought -- and, of course, with his ever growing feelings for Marian, who is committing to their romantic ruse perhaps a little bit too wholeheartedly to ignore.

I think Tumblr should make more fake movies.
Why stop at goncharov? Keep going. Make more. Become the Disney of fake movies, with shitty business practices to boot.
