There's a question which the west coast Fallout games are quietly litigating, which is that age-old gotcha about what you do with the remaining orcs once you've deposed Sauron. In the original Fallout, the Super Mutants are basically universally aligned against the quote-unquote "good guys," for whatever value of that term is applicable to the wasteland at large, but subsequent games make it clear that this was an ideological thing, and a product of the political moment of the mutants creation rather than an ontological quality that they have. The game is very aware that this is something that was done to them, and the tragedy of that; the first mutant you're likely to run into is dying scared and alone.
Fallout 2 presents super mutants who've broken in every direction ideologically in the aftermath of the Unity's collapse; the peacemakers under Marcus at Broken Hills, Gond as a member of the abolitionist NCR rangers, reactionary remnants of the original mutant army, genocidal self-hating fascists like Frank Horrigan. Fallout: New Vegas iterates on this beautifully. The mutants dovetail perfectly with the theme of how every faction in the wasteland is trying and oftentimes failing to reckon with the weight of history. Their utopian movement imploded outside of living memory, closer to the apocalypse than to the present day. The survivors- who can only dwindle in number due to their sterility- have been left to reckon with that in whatever way they can. And they have their backs to about a hundred and twenty years of that reckoning not going particularly well, of being the bugbear and boogeymen for bullies and ideologues whose grandparents weren't even alive to suffer from the Unity's actions. The lack of a collective future for mutantkind casts a pall over even the best ending for Jacobstown; humans are collectively resilient within this setting, but through violence, and accidents, dementia and senility, the day will inevitably come when there are no mutants left. And worse still will be the day before that, when there's only one mutant left. Finding some form of satisfaction or contentment within that dwindling window, with the world against you, is a task that falls to the individual mutant. (Take Mean Sonovabitch, for example. He seems to be doing alright for himself.)
Then we slide on over to the east coast games, where the mutants are.... morons. Cannibals. Marauders. And when you meet one who isn't, the game throws itself a ticker-tape parade for containing such an audacious twist. To go back to the orc thing, it's like if The Hobbit had contained a lengthy, empathetic subplot about the rich internality and fleshed-out-if-deeply-flawed ideology of the orcs, and then there was a pivot to treating them like a monolithic block of ontologically evil marauders in LOTR. While staring you straight in the eye the whole time, unblinking. Daring you to say something

Say hello to the new and independent Fallout Wiki!
Greetings to all of you lovely wastelanders, mutants and robots alike! We come bearing an important announcement, one which might even pique the curiosity of all you nosy prospectors out there.
We’d like to introduce you to the shiny and brand spanking new, Independent Fallout Wiki.
Tumblr media
Now, I know, you may be asking to yourself, “Wait, there’s already a Fallout Wiki out there! Why’s this one so dang special?”
Well, if you’d bear with me for a moment, I’ll tell you why!
Tumblr media
What is the Independent Fallout Wiki?
Well, the Independent Fallout Wiki is just about as straightforward as it sounds! We all used to be members of another wiki dedicated to Fallout, which is hosted by a company that shall remain nameless. Now, if there’s one thing you should know about this company, it’s that they have very little regard for the community, introducing changes that no one likes, hosting tons of ads and even buying out wiki editors to work for them. We find this (among other things) to be antithetical to our beliefs. We feel that wikis should be in the hands of the community, not a company that refuses to listen to us!
This reached a breaking point earlier this year, along with some events out of our control, which led to the bright idea of forking into independence and starting a new wiki! A wiki that’s truly in the hands of the community. A wiki that is self-hosted and safe from harmful, corporate interests. We don’t have shareholders to please and we don’t answer to anyone. We don’t have ads and we don’t need them, hopefully ever. Content is created by fans, for fans
We are simply wanting to provide the most reliable and accurate source of all things Fallout. We’ve even broke bread with some of the other fantastic independent wikis out there, such as Doom Wiki and Combine Overwiki whom we recommend you check out too!
What kinds of new features are we offering?
We’re glad you asked! As well as offering a trove of accurate, well sourced content about the Fallout franchise (with strict guidelines to ensure the best possible content quality, as all wikis should), we’re offering a new Community space. This will be a place for the community to host all kinds of fan works, such as fanfiction, fan art, creations, roleplaying and tabletop games, pen and paper games, Fallout 76 player CAMPs and, much, much more.
As mentioned before, we have affiliated with many other independent wiki projects, including the Doom Wiki, Combine OverWiki, JoJo’s Bizarre Encyclopedia, StrategyWiki, Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages, and even Halopedia! We’re also proud members of the Gaming Wiki Network, and soon, we’ll even be affiliated with NIWA, the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance. These affiliations will offer mutual aid and support that will help every wiki in the short-term and long-term. We are looking forward to working with them, for we all share the same goals!
How can we help and how can we be apart of the community?
We welcome anyone who wishes to join our community. It doesn’t matter if you’re an editor or reader. We are all fans of Fallout and we encourage you to join our community! If you are a non-editor and are only looking for information about something from the Fallout franchise, click this here link! https://fallout.wiki/wiki/Fallout_Wiki/
If you are interested in becoming an editor and want to fight the good fight to help rewrite content and smashing misinformation and head-canon, click this other here link! https://fallout.wiki/wiki/Special:UserLogin
While you’re there, check out our LGBTQ representation page. It was written by the lovely robot, C0NN1E here on Tumblr!:
https://fallout.wiki/wiki/LGBTQ_representation_in_Fallout
We welcome all members of the LGBTQ+, MOGAI, GSRM, Plural and Otherkin communities with open arms!
Last, but not least, if you’d like to be apart of our wider social community, you can follow us here on Tumblr, on Twitter, check out our Instagram or join our Discord, right here below, right now! We even got a fresh, custom invite link!
https://discord.gg/falloutwiki
https://twitter.com/thefalloutwiki
https://www.instagram.com/thefalloutwiki/
Well, that about wraps up this little segment of ours. We hope you enjoy this project as much as we do. We put a lot of time, effort and care into it and we want to give back to the people that we love the most, the community. Have safe travels out there, and we hope to see you around!
END OF BROADCAST

idk how to put this into words well but I think the reason Bethesda fallout games have main quests that just kinda suck to me is because they try to make them personal to the character rather than the player, and the character is both too fleshed out to be a vessel for me as a player but not fleshed out enough for me to give a shit.
in fallout 4 I'm off in the wasteland with no reason to care about this kid I'm looking for because that's the character's kid, not mine. the main problem lies in Bethesda trying to flesh out the player character as their own person with the vault intro in 3 and the entire structure of 4.
in new vegas as far as I'm concerned benny just shot ME because the courier is a fully blank slate at the start of the game so there's no disconnect between me and the player character.
in fallout 1 all I know is that I'm from vault 13 and on a mission but every thing about my characterisation is mine from the start, the player is still a blank slate.

A little map of Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 New Vegas would be visible on the right side, but this is only including areas from the classic games.

Last night I 'ad a thought. About ragpickers and Fallout.
Logically speakin' it'd make sense to see some, right? We have Prospectors and Scavengers in Fallout, but ragpickers would logically be about. Many NPCs in Fallouts wear mere rags anyway, someone had to gather such materials.
Then I realised somethin'. Ragpickers in Fallouts world wouldn't just be gathering random scraps, surely. Y'know which part of most NPCs we players don't usually collect? The clothes, right? Because they're often heavy and not worth gathering for caps. Logically, wouldn't Raiders also not bother with taking the clothes of their victims?
So, imagine if there were wastelanders out there who know where Raiders ambush people. Or where a battle between two factions happened and made their living picking the clothes off of already mostly looted causalities. Eking out a living sneaking around and taking clothes to sell.
An int'restin' idea, right? Could be a protagonist backstory, that. Might make me next Courier with that idea in-mind.

hey, so your boyfriends life ended in the wasteland. Yeah… yeah, his bones will be scraped clean by the desolate wind. His vault will surely die like he has. No, the darkness of the afterlife is all that awaits him now. Yeah, sorry, I mean, may he find more peace in that world than he found in this one, right?

Say what you will about Fallout 76 but they have the best damn looking Pipboy in the Pipboy 2000
Tumblr media
Those lines, that clean look, the vac tubes under the mesh. I may end up buying a working one.
But what about the others?
Fallout 1 & 2 both have a version of the Pipboy 2000.
Tumblr media
More or less a tablet instead of an arm computer but you can see where 76's Pipboy 2000 took design from.
Tumblr media
Although on the arm would be incredibly akward.
Fallout 3 & New Vegas have the Pipboy 3000
Tumblr media
Also comes with a glove withna dial. It's not as refined as 76's. Wider screen, bigger dial but all in all kinda meh.
Fallout 4 has... whatever the hell this is
Tumblr media
My least favorite. Chunky and small at the same time.
Fallout 76's is definately the best looking Pipboy.
