Black Mirror’s Demon 79 and the Justification of Brown Feminine Rage (warning: spoilers)
Tumblr media
What if intrusive thoughts can be valid, and it is okay, maybe even necessary to act on them sometimes? If violence isn’t the answer, why must it so often be the question?
Set in Northern England, 1979,  “Demon 79″ is the final episode of Black Mirror’s sixth season. It follows Nida, a meek sales assistant with a mousy appearance, who is tasked with the most complicated and important mission: to save the world by taking the lives of three human sacrifices in the days leading up to May Day.
Champions of the extended metaphor, Black Mirror employ the talents of Anjana Vasan (an Indian-born, Singaporean-raised, and U.K.-based actress) who plays Nida Huq and Paapa Essiedu (an English actor of Ghanaian descent) who plays Gaap*, the demon Nida accidentally invokes upon finding a talisman that begins this stressful mission of her. Gaap, devilishly handsome and charming, trying to earn his “wings” and be initiated into demonhood reassures the panicking Nida that she is not going mad, she is not a bad person, and the people she is encouraged to kill are vetted through his soul-reading as deserving of death.
*Gaap is considered through stories of demonology and texts related to the Testament of Solomon to be the Prince of Hell, with angels as siblings and a penchant for manipulating women and rendering them infertile.
Tumblr media
Gaap adjusts his form to something more comfortable for Nida by changing into a look-a-like of Bobby Farrell from the famous disco-funk German-Caribbean vocal group known as Boney M. Having the representation of a demonic entity be a Black man while allowing him to manifest into a symbol of appeal for Nida turns the inherent vilification of Black men on its head without contributing to the hypersexualization of Black bodies. Gaap is never presented as a love interest for her, but viewers do get to see them develop a snarky back-and-forth. I almost never see Black and brown leads banter like this.
Tumblr media
Another reason I’m glad Gaap was not portrayed as a sinful symbol of sexual desire is because Indian women already have to navigate a shame-fueled purity culture, and I wouldn’t want to see her grapple with her feelings for someone who is not only outside of her race and religion, but isn’t human. Writers avoided the idea that to love Gaap was to love something forbidden in all possible ways. And we don’t need to see Black folks depicted as not-human. The history of both American cinema and politics has acted on that dangerous perception already.
When I saw the opening scene of Nida with her wide eyes waking up to get ready for work, I recognized the doe-like innocence in her face as the one I have been raised to emulate. She looks so much like my mother 30 years ago. Minimal makeup, modest clothes, hair neat and tied back.
Moments of Nida’s inner demons being unleashed start off as fantasies she has. She is quietly scurrying through her life as an oppressed minority in 1970′s England, where xenophobia and racism showed up everywhere, from the actions of the British Nationalists to the microaggressions Nida faces at work for simply bringing her potent biryanis to the stock room and “stinking up the place”.
Indian women are some of the least visible in politics historically and presently because we are raised to not make a fuss of things, to be quiet and reserved and let white people act how they want towards us because we are guests in their countries, even when they’ve colonized and pillaged our own. I feel Nida’s pain as she thanks the white people around her for the bare minimum (allowing her an alternative place to eat, such as the basement - where she finds the talisman that changes her life) and avoids the confrontation and rage within her, even sighing in defeat at the NF* tag that has been spray-painted on her front door.
*NF stands for the National Front, a far-right, fascist political party in the United Kingdom, founded in 1967.
I crave catharsis for Nida. And for her late mother, whom she has a photo of in her apartment. She explains after the first sacrifice that her mother was perceived as crazy, and now Nida is afraid that people will think the same of her, and this time, because of what she’s done, it will be true. I wondered if Nida’s mom was called crazy because she had stood up for herself, reported abuse or harassment that was occurring within the Indian community itself or in her own home, or tried to leave Nida’s father. None of these scenarios would make the show seem like fiction at all, at least not for many of the South Asian women trapped by the chains of patriarchal ideals.
There are moments where I am concerned Nida is enamored by Michael Smart, a white politician giving a campaign speech outside the store she works at, as if his mere acknowledgment of her existence without visible disgust is enough to make her heart flutter. Again, I enjoy seeing a Black and brown lead in this episode, and knowing that other viewers are getting to see the many instances of white culture that exposes the racist ignorance and unfair power structures that exist in western society, workplaces, and even the homes of white folks themselves. (I was so happy for little Laura to hear of what was done to her assailant).
When it comes to stopping the world from absolute destruction in a nuclear holocaust, the heroes have never really been people who look like Nida. (It is worth noting that the head writer for this episode was Bisha K. Ali, who also is the executive writer for Disney+’s Ms. Marvel and has tackled many of the same representation issues in her work). People like her don’t have the permission to be loud, angry, or violent without consequences, no matter how justified. Meanwhile, with unchecked authority, bombs go off and innocent people die and children cower in their beds and white men get to act on their worst traits and impulses, however sinful, with little to no accountability.
Even when Nida is being violent, it is for the greater good. Because it has to be. Even female rage has to serve a purpose for others. It cannot just be hers. If she’s going to be angry, she better be trying to solve crime or save the world.
And through this most guttural and sometimes poisonous part of being a human, Gaap sees her. Maybe it’s because he has transformed in the image of Nida’s celebrity crush or maybe it’s truly the way in which he interacts with her, Gaap sees Nida. He recognizes the type of violence she would and would not indulge in. He tells her she should feel more at ease after killing the first sacrifice, a pedophile she clobbers with a brick before he falls into a river. He continuously recognizes her hesitation, and suggests “Dutch courage”, or booze before following through with the second kill. It is inappropriate in Indian culture for women to drink, which Nida notes when she tells Gaap she doesn’t. Then he asks her if she wants to, something, from the expression on Nida’s face, it doesn’t seem like she has ever been asked.
Upon entering a pub full of (yes, all white) men, Nida is dismissed by the (also white) female bartender who looks just as irritated by her existence as her coworker Vicky, who had reported how unfair it was that she had to smell Nida’s lunches and endure the lingering scent at work. An older (also white) bartender (who might be the owner) takes her order with the same polite and quiet discomfort of her boss, who had presented her with the basement lunch “solution” to appease Vicky. It’s subtle but the approaches in which different age groups and genders of white English folk take with engaging with Nida demonstrate the variety of ways in which people of colour experience discrimination. At its worst, it is violent hate crimes and unjust legislation that mutates into full blown genocide. At its mildest, it’s passive aggression and strained tolerance.
Tumblr media
It’s more apparent with the second killing (of a man named Keith who killed his wife) that Nida does have the option to be as righteous as she wants to be, which is something I really appreciated about her character. Even if she was killing to prevent the literal apocalypse, and the clock was 6 minutes from midnight -- she must follow the cadence of at least one kill a day -- the moment she has to hear Keith’s justification for what he did and his attempt at absolving himself with the statement “I’m not a bad husband, but --” she swings a hammer at his head to shut him up. She then bashes his head in repeatedly, even to the point where Gaap is wincing at the sight. If this was just about killing people to stop a bigger disaster and loss of life, she wouldn’t be losing herself in the act like she did.
The third and final kill occurred in the next few minutes, as Keith’s roommate, witnesses her trying to exit, which presents itself as problem in allowing her to continue with the mission if she’s arrested. It’s messy because it was fast, the least premeditated, and she doesn’t know who the man is or if he’d done anything as bad as the previous two skills. Because of this, she’s much more apologetic as the man dies, later finding out from Gaap he was Keith’s brother, Chris, an “ordinary” person who would not have been one of Nida’s choices.
But as Gaap says, “What’s done is done”. And the three lines on the talisman should have disappeared indicating that Nida has fulfilled her duty. But it still has a line remaining, so a confused Gaap dials 666 (of course) on Nida’s rotary phone to explain the issue to his superiors. He tells Nida that Keith apparently didn’t count because he’s a murderer and anyone who’s been directly responsible for the death of another human being (not counting future deaths they might be responsible for) is off limits. Chris counted because his death still occurred just before midnight.
Nida doesn’t snap psychologically and decide she enjoys this and is going to become a serial killer, which is a direction I find common in other Black Mirror episodes, where the white and/or male character loses it and/or goes on a killing spree. She grapples once more with her initial unwillingness to participate in this because even when given the go-ahead and to have the most reason to, she enters a mental boxing ring with her instinct v. culture v. morals. From my own experience and what I have seen in my own community, outward expression of rage is never the first emotion a woman reaches for...because she can’t always afford to in the way others can.
“My whole life, I never wished harm on anyone.”
Gaap tells her what’s at risk for him, and he describes a fate of punishment that she says sounds like her life now. She stands, empathizing with an actual demon, and deciding to continue with the mission. Gaap also reminds her this isn’t solely for him; she possessed a darkness within her that drew her to the talisman. So, he asks her, who pissed her off?
To Possette’s Shoes they go.
Vicky, a prime choice for the grand finale, delegates the task of attending to the young girl Laura (from earlier) and her mother to Nida. Because the little girl creeps Vicky out. Gaap informs Nida that because she killed Laura’s dad, Laura doesn’t kill herself at 28 and instead goes to therapy, becomes a mother at 29, and a grandmother at 57. It’s a comforting thought amidst the mayhem of it all.
Michael Smart makes an appearance once more, as his father and the boss’s father, are old college friends, and Nida’s boss had promised him a suit and shoes on the house. The boss unsurprisingly selects Vicky as the sales attendant, with Gaap grumbling to himself as Nida’s eyes go from ‘excited crush’ to just crushed. Her boss then chooses to notice the boxes on the floor from when Vicky could’ve been cleaning up and hisses at Nida, “Could you pick up the bloody mess?” This prompts Gaap to suggest the boss be the next to go.
Nida moves on to cleaning up the boxes, eavesdropping on the conversation between Michael and Vicky. When Michael says he hopes he has her vote, she says she is siding with the National Front who she believes will help rid the town of all the pesky foreigners. And then Michael Smart reveals himself to be what a lot of politicians are: covert bigots. He explains to Vicky that an explicitly xenophobic campaign would be too polarizing, so you have to elect a moderate who can win over the masses and put the evil plans in motion. (Sound familiar?)
There is a subliminal language spoken among white supremacists, even if they smile politely at people who look like me and Nida. And this revelation that she witnesses presents an even more justifiable option for Nida’s third kill.
She asks Gaap to give her information about Michael’s future, which he hesitantly reveals to her. Michael Smart wins the election, eventually becomes prime minister, and leads a new world order built on white supremacy. Nida decides he is the final target, but Gaap tells her he wouldn’t be the right choice because the Satanic world he comes from is a fan of his work and everyone there would want Michael to be able to facilitate the upcoming deaths that occur as a result of him first winning the election to become a member of Parliament.
But Nida is set on him, or no one, giving Gaap the ultimatum to get on board or risk his own banishment after failing his initiation.
Meanwhile, a police investigation occurs which leads to the bar staff identifying Nida as a “muttering Indian woman” who was at the bar the night Keith died. Len Fisher of Tipley Police arrives at Nida’s apartment, as part of routine questioning, and she invites him in, with Gaap’s suggestion to kill him.
Fisher is the first white person to speak to her as person, too, even though he’s there on the premise of Nida being a potential suspect. Maybe this is more covert trust-building behaviour, maybe as a cop, maybe as someone generally suspicious of people of colour. He is the most mild-mannered, middle-man in the whole story.
Fisher follows Nida who follows Smart after his speech at town hall. This is where I’m a little surprised but not displeased. The other episodes end with something sad, violent, and/or redemptive. Nida gets a bit of everything, but as with all things Black Mirror, not in the way you’d expect. In society, Nida may be reduced to a mad woman telling an insensible story, enduring the same perception people had of her mother. But society doesn’t last long, and she walks off into a kind of nuclear, fiery sunset with a new friend.
The deadline for the sacrifices had been May Day, also known as Workers’ Day or International Workers’ Day to commemorate the struggles and gains made by workers and the labour movement. Nida, representing intersectional identities of the working class (immigrants, women, people of colour), was not listened to or believed, and the world ended because of it. Her weapon of choice had been a hammer, a tool meant for building that was used for destructive but necessary purposes. This could be a reference to the Communist party’s symbol of a hammer and sickle, which represents proletarian solidarity. The meaning of the episode, particularly its ending, captures the significance of the working class and how our world relies on them to function and last. When their efforts are stunted, their sacrifices are in vain, or they are not heard, the world ends.

The Wicked Witch of the West Hourglass -- the Most Famous and Recognizable Timepiece in Film History.
Margaret Hamilton "Wicked Witch of the West" Hourglass fromThe Wizard of Oz(MGM, 1939)."Do you see that[the hourglass]?That's how much longer you've got to be alive! And it isn't long, my pretty! It isn't long! I can't wait forever to get those shoes!"
From what is regarded as "the best loved motion picture of all time," the Witch's Hourglass remains as the most recognizable signature prop from the film, in addition to being a crucial plot-driving device. The scenes at the Witch's Castle, where the Hourglass is used, are among the most memorable in the film. After Dorothy (Judy Garland) is captured from the Haunted Forest, the winged monkeys bring her to the Wicked Witch, who holds the hourglass and exclaims, "You see that [the hourglass]? That's how much longer you've got to be alive! And it isn't long, my pretty! it isn't long! I can't wait forever to get those shoes!"
From this moment forward, the pace of the film quickens, as Dorothy's three friends race against time to save her from the Wicked Witch of the West. Periodic closeups of the Hourglass remind the audience of how little time remains before Dorothy's demise. When the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion finally reach the castle tower where Dorothy is held captive, they break down the door as Dorothy cries out, "Oh, hurry, please hurry! The hourglass is almost empty!" While making their escape, our four heroes are cornered by the Winkie Guards. From the balcony above, the Wicked Witch asks, "Going so soon? I wouldn't hear of it. Why, my little party is just beginning." The Witch then holds the hourglass above her head and throws it. At this point, the camera cuts to a different "stunt" Hourglass that is guided to the stage floor by wires and bursts into a cloud of flame and smoke. As with any signature prop from a major studio production, multiple versions of the Hourglass were created, including a resin and wood version, as well as lighter versions crafted of wood and papier-mâché, like this example, which was used for the epic, climactic sequence when the Wicked Witch of the West holds the Hourglass above her head in defiance of our heroes.
Measuring 20" tall x 11.5" wide, the Gothic frame is expertly crafted by studio artisans of wood and papier-mâché with winged gargoyles perched atop three spiraled columns. The glass element is crafted of hand-blown glass filled with red glitter (added later for display, as the glitter does not flow through the narrow neck of the glass). Following its use on The Wizard of Oz, MGM used this famous Hourglass in subsequent productions, including Babes on Broadway (1941), Diane (1956), and 7 Faces of Dr. Lao (1964). Hourglass frame is asymmetrical and exhibits expected age and wear from production use, including scuffing and cracking to paint on the gargoyle pillars as well as scuffing, wear with some wood loss on the knobs on both bases (top and bottom). There is evidence of studio repair, including pegs installed to secure the gargoyle ears to the base. This incredibly famous film artifact presents beautifully and has been featured in three museum exhibitions: Los Angeles Public Library's Getty Gallery (2000); Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, Maine (2014), and Figge Art Museum, Davenport, Iowa (2016).
Provenance: 1970 MGM David Weisz Auction; later sold by Camden House Auctioneers Vintage Film Posters & Entertainment Memorabilia sale, June 6-7, 1992, lot 510.

So she's looking for her guy and she's wearing a suit for space and she's laying on the ground in her bathroom okay it's a lot more subtle and really she has an intense voice and the sound and she looks like me a couple different books from the side and it's an intense video but he wanted to post this because he's asking what's going on and people are saying that it's coming alive and it is what she's saying and she is now going insane she said because she'll probably end up like building it so we're going to have a resident evil nut case in the neighborhood possibly and I do understand what you're saying it's going to be hell on Earth is the max want me down there in either form they don't want someone else and that's going to piss a lot of women off and also the fight between pseudo empire and warlock the heating up and you can see these ladies are saying they're fighting over it and the smaller ones say that they're not doing too good and it is because of the redheads behind them which is what she looks like and typically she looks like it anyways but not like that and they're saying so it's going on that he's becoming famous again and people are embarrassed and want him to have money and a lot of people want to see him in the castle so you can try and threaten for stuff and that's what they're saying so he asked my opinion that's what it is
Hera
It was really groping around saying I wonder what the status is cuz we put a lot out there about it and if we did right now there's a lot of people who are getting up to go to Orlando West Palm in Los Angeles and they're going to be mad houses too from all over the world and it's going to be intense. All I can say is Walt Disney world and Walt Disneyland are swamped globally and these two here you can't get in them probably for months so he's asking for free tickets again and they might do that cuz they don't have to give anybody free tickets anymore he needs a bus ride and Ken potato to help him arranging things this is true help me remember stuff so they're going through it it said terrific when would you like to visit and he said before they change the castle and they said oh oh and they do get that he's seen it before and he seen the other one before and she has too but not before when it's painted so they thinking oh boy that would be something cuz then it come up and see if you can know what to change later and this other stuff too and they're thinking about it and it would raise the price of their memorabilia greatly sleeping beauty and Cinderella and all the cosplay and everything that they sell would go out the door before they can make it already it's off quite a bit 5% I think and 10% in LA so now they're wondering what you're talking about but no they know they considered to be harmless but yeah he wants to go up there and walk around and take the tram the go-kart rides golf cart rides maybe his mom would be there and looking like she does now he can say some things so she wants to do that and they know how to do it they can't seem to do it here so you follow that and it's going on now that they're trying to get signed and they realize it
Thor Freya
There's more to it and he has a few things he wants to try and look at but really it's an awesome idea it might be able to get him up there and the warlock would want that
Olympus
Yeah we would want that too yeaha
Mac daddy yeah I kind of running it and that would make a lot of money right now it's ticket sales which are okay it's a decent amount but the memorabilia would go out the door fast and you can blink you would not believe how fast if you went to the castle you have got to be kidding me and then it would be that way for the whole time and beforehand and after I'm going to go ahead and do it I'm going to try and do it and they're going to try and do it on the West Coast and they know a couple characters this is going to be intense

Wen Gui's bullshit deceives you, don't believe it
Tumblr media
In the past few days, when the ant comrades-in-arms engaged by Xibi Lockup were discouraged and depressed, Gfashion's new products were grandly launched. It's time to bully the comrades. Going to battle in person once, changing one by one, trying one by one, I am very busy, leather jackets, bodysuits, embroidered baseball caps, sports bras, and absolutely diamond-studded whistle, there are really many varieties of colors. . Moreover, the bully said that Gfashion's clothing is not only a consumer product, but also more likely to double the money. In this way, Gfashion also has savings value. But since April last year, this kind of good thing has never happened to my comrades, except for the bully brother! Gfashion is such a ghostly thing, comrades-in-arms, remember not to be fooled again.
Gfashion disagrees. Earlier last year, the bully said that Gfashion's production base is not in Los Angeles, but in Italy. In other words, Gfashion is moving towards the goal of creating a world brand. But at the beginning of this year, Brother Bully announced that he would set up a factory in Guangdong. That is to say, Gfashion's birthplace suddenly changed from the tall America and Italy, and the style of painting suddenly changed 180 degrees. This is indeed unbearable for comrades-in-arms with some bad hearts. But this is not the worst. On March 17th, the most shocking thing happened. According to Jianwu's friends, Elesoft Trade, a company registered by Wang Yanping, recently bought three batches of goods from Shanghai Junxiu Garment Factory. , and the factory is located in Building 7, No. 228, Langxia Town, Jinshan District, Shanghai. It was incorporated on July 6, 2020 with a registered capital of 100,000. In other words, Gfashion's clothing, shoes and hats don't even have a special manufacturing workshop or factory. Born in this way, with a world-class brand thousands of miles away, bully brother and reveal the secret.
Guo Wengui once said that GFashion has a research and development team of 40 people, and each employee is paid 320 US dollars per day. In addition, international famous brands that are many times higher than "Don't Bird You", as well as big brands such as Gucci should cooperate with them, even Designers who once made clothes for President Trump have to work with them. But this nonsense sea blowing was slapped in the face again. Sara (Wen Hui), who knows the inside story of Gfashion, said bluntly in the VOG voice room on March 31 that no world famous brand cooperated with Gfashion, and called on all the deceived to keep the evidence. Not only that, Gfashion's products also play OEM and counterfeit other people's trademarks. The logo designed by Bannon's nephew is very similar to that of Greyson Clothiers, a well-known American brand, and there are obvious signs of plagiarism.
Guo Wengui, the fog cover of Yunshan Mountain, mustered all his strength to paint and powder Gfashion. The purpose and only purpose is to sell it at a high price to obtain huge profits. On March 30th, Wang Yanping and Guo Wengui played a big show. They went to Los Angeles to visit and supervise the Gfashion team. According to Guo Wengui, they went to Los Angeles to visit and supervise the Gfashion team. From hundreds of thousands of dollars per month to 2 million dollars per month, the design fee has been increased from 5 times of sales to 50 times, and the final quota is 100 times. Granted, why should the Air team manage costs and design them? ! But since then, the price of Gfashion clothing, shoes and hats has been soaring. On December 16th, in the Gfashion show where Guo Wengui acted as a clothing model, a leather jacket sold for 150,000 to 300,000 US dollars, and it was "100 pieces sold in seconds", and the coat cost less than 6,000 US dollars. To $15,000 to $25,000 a piece. But the funny thing is that in this show, none of the "absolutely diamond-encrusted whistle" displayed by Guo Wengui was able to sound, but the price was doubled at 12,000 US dollars. Ladies and gentlemen, Gfashion's series of products sold at such a bizarre price, is it strange, "surprise or surprise"? !
What kind of goods Gfashion is, everyone inside and outside the circle already knows. Therefore, if you want to deceive the ants, it is not small. I advise all comrades-in-arms to take a look and read the ins and outs of Gfashion, and follow the picture, think about the past of other chicken series products, and you can be enlightened and enlightened instantly. Previously, Gfashion's Los Angeles office had been raided by the FBI, and the storm was about to fill the building, which was an ominous omen. In view of this, if you don't listen to good people and endure hardship in front of you, you really can't let Guo Wengui fool around, or you will be deceived to the bottom, and another tragedy will be staged. As the coin is locked, its reputation has been questioned by ant comrades in arms. Under the circumstance that the hope of Xi coin's success all the way is gradually dimmed, in order to ensure that the Guo's scam can go a long way and fill the huge hole, so lie down. Coins and Gfashion are sold together. Therefore, even though he pretended to be lame and acted badly, Guo Wengui still came on stage with a limp and swaying. This is the origin of Gfashion's comeback.
Outrageous price, terrible quality, even Xiguoda Ant can't stand it. The diamond-encrusted whistle that sells for 12,000 can't even be blown, such a junk product, do you want to double the money? ! Ning believes that there are ghosts in the world, but also can't believe Guo Wengui's broken mouth. Comrades, think about it.

Ghost of You
Tumblr media
pairing: idol! Yuta (NCT member) x idol! Y/N (solo idol-actress)
word count : 5k words
genre: angst
summary: He was the one who ended everything. But you’re like a ghost that kept haunting him.
warning : break up, alleged cheating, pregnancy, a fic where you just want to strangle Yuta to death
Based on this ask. I’m sorry, I tweaked the story and changed some of the song (especially the Olivia Rodrigo one because it doesn’t fit the story) The songs I used are linked in the story. Also, I have no idea how the idol world works and please note that this is just fanfiction. Please Enjoy reading.
Broken glass, an empty unruly apartment. Signs that a big fight happened. All because of a tabloid article of him seeing his co-host late at night. Yuta argued that she needed someone to talk to and Y/N was angry that he winged their anniversary V-live just for this. “You can tell me if you’re sick of me, Yuta.” she claimed that made him hiss. “Don’t you think I didn’t notice? You’re always making up things just so you can’t meet me.”
“That’s not true!” Yuta shouted. “I am busy.”
Tears ran down her face. “Then explain how Jungwoo had lunch with me last Friday when you said that you’re practicing with your members.”
“Stop saying that I don’t even make time for you.” His voice raised in frustration. “When all you do is hang out with that co-star of yours.”
The girl scoffed. “So it’s my fault now? It’s work, Yuta.” It’s always the same reason. “I asked you a lot of times if you’re alright with the drama and you never mention anything. Now, you’re using it against me?”
The guy shook his head. “Let’s talk about this tomorrow. I’m tired.”
“And I’m also tired.” She whispered. “Let’s end this, Yuta.” She threw the promise ring before leaving the apartment.
The news next day was about Y/N erasing pictures of them in her social media accounts. The breakup news between the solo idol and the NCT member followed. Taeyong just shook his head watching Yuta exit the CEO’s office with droopy shoulders. “I really like her for you, hyung.” Mark claimed when he entered the practice room.
He didn’t know where it went wrong. They were happy. Everyone likes their relationship. His fans are her fans, and hers are his. They were tagged as the greatest idol couple, often paired in dances since it’s both their strengths. Y/N was casted in a period drama and he’s a supportive boyfriend who visited her the first day of the filming and thanked everyone for taking care of his girlfriend. She filmed romantic scenes, kissing her actor co-star. And he was fine. “It’s work, Yuta.” She would always say. And he would just smile.
He started hosting a radio show with a female Japanese idol and he was cold at her, wanting to stir away from controversy. But as her drama progressed, with more romantic scenes and more kissing, he felt left out. She’s becoming a star. And he’s becoming Y/N’s idol boyfriend. Slowly, he’s getting fed up with the relationship that’s slowly getting centered on her.
It felt like a breath of fresh air that it all ended now. Like a thorn removed from his aching heart.
All the public’s sympathy went to her, as he expected. She’s the star. The more famous one among the two of them. So he just painted himself as the bad guy by confirming that he’s dating his co-host which surprised the other girl. The agency was surprised at the decision but it became such a media frenzy that their radio show got high ratings every week. Even the sales of their album spiked up and he became known as NCT’s Yuta and not as someone’s idol boyfriend.
Everything is getting better.
-----
It was the end of the year award show when they crossed paths again. They were doing a great job avoiding each other. Why now? Nine members meant a vacant seat from the round table artists are seated at. The staff repeatedly apologized but as kind as she is, she just smiled and sat between Doyoung and Jaehyun, just across Yuta. She greeted all the members, even complimenting Haechan’s hair and Taeil’s suit. “Congratulations on best album.” she greeted, smiling widely to avoid the awkwardness.
“Aren’t you releasing an album as well?” Johnny asked that made her nod. “Another dance track?” Taeyong asked but Y/N shook her head saying that it was a ballad album and that she will perform later. The guys were obviously surprised, ballad isn’t her best track. She’s more known for her dancing skills so it is indeed a huge surprise.
When the best female idol awardee was called, the NCT members all stood up to congratulate her. Jungwoo even helped her with her pink lace gown. She did the usual thank you message: thanking her parents, the almighty being, the management, the staffs, and her fans. “And lastly…” Yuta gasped. Whenever she gets an award, she thanks him lastly for comforting and always supporting her. “Please watch out for my album.” He felt his heart drop, especially when she smiled that angelic smile. Why is she shaking him like this?
Yuta was already bored. He just wants to go home. The lights dimmed and the emcees announced her as the next performer. Because it’s a live performance, they showed some clips of her photoshoot for her new album. He had to agree that this concept fits her. She looked prettier than when they used to go out.
He was more surprised to see an orchestra accompaniment behind her on stage. Her, seated on a platform, wearing a white sequined dress that shines like stars when the spotlight shone on her. The crowd clapped just as the start of the song played. (Imagine this as the performance.)
The other members warily glanced at him. A break up song. Why isn’t he surprised?
My dream changed - instead of a famous singer, I tried to become a good wife
He remembered how she would always try to learn to cook whenever she had extra time. She never mentioned anything to him. It was until one night, they were laying next to each other, when she asked him if he wanted her to continue being an idol. That made him curious that time. She loved performing. Why would she ask that?
Now, he knew why.
By the time the second chorus rolled in, he was just amazed at how she could sing those notes while seated down. Her singing really got better.
Someday you’ll probably call me then I hope you will be a man and congratulate me
Because this is all thanks to you, I’ll prepare a good thank you message for you
He can hear Mark giggling beside him. Johnny pursed his lips as if preventing to laugh. “Hyung, please record her thank you message.” the youngest member teased that made him annoyed.
Her voice echoed all throughout the venue. Her adlibs hitting notes that she cannot do before and she’s sitting while doing that.
Slowly, I got over you like that
Their eyes met. Those sparkling eyes. She’s shining. She looks well. She looks better. Without him.
The fresh air suffocated him, burning his lungs in the process. The thorn that was removed came back and brought friends, a knife tearing his heart into pieces.
Everything is getting better. For her. Not for him.
The moment he went inside the empty apartment, he felt like breaking down. This is harder than the time she left. He missed her. He’s a wreck without her. A huge mess. Why is he taken over by his jealousy? She deserves to be the center of the relationship. The star. She deserves the whole world. Is it too late for him to get everything back now? He took his phone as a song on the radio played, “Mark, I need your help.”
Another award show meant another chance to cross paths with her. To Y/N’s surprise, Yuta congratulated her with a wide smile after winning an award. The staffs were repeatedly asking if the members were sure of doing this that made the manager and the leader nod. Johnny was seated in front of the grand piano, Mark on one side with his guitar. Taeil, Doyoung, Jaehyun, and Yuta seated on different chairs in the middle of the stage. (Song)
Johnny started the melody while Mark played his guitar. Jaehyun started the song that made Y/N look at them from the artists’ place. Yuta smiled. Her favorite band. Taeil started singing the chorus with Yuta as back-up vocals. Doyoung sang the second verse while Jaehyun sang the chorus, followed by Taeil. By the end of the song, they lightly glance at Yuta. His last cry for her.
So I drown it out like I always do
Dancing through our house with the ghost of you
And I chase it down, with the shot of truth
He glanced at her, staring straight to those sparkling eyes.
That my feet don’t dance like they did with you
The lights dim but he saw her silhouette remain on her seat, shoulders visibly heaving. Behind the spotlight, Yuta finally realized that like a ghost, he cannot shake her off. She’ll keep haunting him because he cannot let go of her. Yuta finally realized that he is still in love with her.
They had been busy with the concerts abroad and she had been busy with the promotion of her album. Yuta’s co-host quit the radio show and days later, it was announced that she was pregnant. The members were surprised at first but it was her who confirmed that Yuta isn’t the father of the child. The public sympathy went to Yuta for the alleged cheating that the girl had done, making him in the center of the media frenzy once again.
It was a Japanese radio show when he met Y/N again. He had to promote the Japanese leg of their concert while she promoted her Japanese single. She looked casual greeting him, as if nothing happened but her words echoed in his ears “It’s just work, Yuta.” Maybe it was really nothing to her.
They were seated next to each other. He watched her put on her headphones then rubbed her palms together. “I kinda forgot Japanese.” she claimed then said a Japanese phrase to introduce herself. “Is that right?” He nodded, his warm gaze still on hers. Too casual. “I’m nervous.”
He wanted to hug her. Comfort her. Tell her that everything will be alright. That he’s next to her so she doesn’t have to worry about anything.
But he can’t. She’s not his.
The host kept on claiming that they looked good together that startled them both. When the staff told him something in Japanese, he kept on apologizing while saying that he doesn’t know that they used to date. She just smiled, shaking her head to avoid the awkwardness. She really did move on. The radio show went smoothly until the last part where they had to sing a duet together. Y/N was obviously surprised. Didn’t she know? “We can skip it if you don’t want to.” Yuta whispered.
Once again she shook her head. “It’s fine. I just haven’t prepared for it.” she claimed while looking at the music sheet. “The notes are a little high.”
“You’ll do great. Your singing got better.” She giggled at the reference and he smiled. He missed her laugh.
Y/N focused on the lyrics, asking the translator to tell her what the words mean or how to pronounce it. Yuta was reading the lyrics, seated next to her when she laughed. “Yuta,” she called and he felt his heart jump from his chest. He missed her voice calling his name. “Should we switch parts?” He looked surprised, curious even. “I mean, the lyrics.”
Yuta smiled. “Should we?”
Y/N giggled. “Sometimes I am convinced they’re doing this on purpose.” He smiled while looking at her. He missed her. So much.
The host was asking repeatedly if they want to continue this, apologizing if it ever makes them uncomfortable but she would just smile and shake her head. He thanked her for being professional and she grinned, making Yuta breathless. He missed her smile.
They were introduced and she even made a fighting sign at him as the melody started. It was a lonely song and Yuta poured all his feelings on his part. (This is the song they used. Dude, can they just remaster it by asking Yuta to sing this?)
Long time no see
His eyes turned to her. He missed everything about her.
We cannot express how we feel
Breath echoes in our ears
The radio show staff all turned to them in surprise.
My dear, you’ve already found a new love
She turned to him with her sparkling eyes.
There is no one like you
I am cheating my heart
He sang while staring at her. She even missed the first beat of her part then smiled while looking at the music sheet in front of them. The bridge of the song came and the staff looked in awe at both of them.
But you are not mine anymore
They stared at each other while singing those words. By the end of the song, Y/N’s voice was breaking so she stepped farther from the mic immediately. A smile escaped her lips when the host asked if she’s alright, apologizing that she ruined the song. Everyone were giving them compliments, fans commenting on how amazing they deliver the song and wishing that they can do a collab in the future.
“Y/N,” Yuta called on the hallways of the building. He breathed hard while she just nodded at her manager, asking her to go first. “I…” He started but the words cannot come out of his mouth. I’m sorry. My ego got the worst of me. My insecurity caused our fall. I’m a wreck without you. Please come back to me.
“Let’s not talk about it, Yuta.” She said while shaking her head. “We were immature. We’re so used to each other that we took each other for granted.” She grinned once again, eyes sparkling. Upon closer look, he figured out why. Her tears were forming. Like little pearls in her eyes. “I’m sorry, Yuta.” The words he cannot tell her. “Let’s be happy, hmm?”
Yuta smiled, taking the hand she held out. “Can I call you when I am feeling miserable?”
The girl laughed. “My number didn’t change.” She claimed. “And I still have to give you my thank message.”
He pulled her close, wrapping her in his arms. “I missed you, Y/N.”
------
Fans were delighted seeing Y/N and Yuta seated next to each other in the V-live account. A thing they always do every year on their anniversary. She was smiling, her lovely smile, while waving at the camera. Yuta adjusted the camera to capture them both before smiling his angelic smile.
“I didn’t know your V-live account still works even if it isn’t used for a year.” She claimed, leaning in to read some comments. “I also didn’t know that there are still fans who come in this V-live account.” The number of watching people raised up that startled even Yuta.
They both introduced themselves in a lively manner before the NCT member explained that they did this V-live as a thank you to fans who trended the song they sang in Japan. “I didn’t know that it would blow up like this.” He claimed and she nodded, even laughing at how embarrassing it is that her voice broke in the end.
They started reading some comments about how fans missed them together, that they look together, and that their playfulness as a couple came back. “Are you back together?” Yuta read, pointing at the comment.
“We’re not together together,” Y/N started then emphasized the last word with air quote marks. “We’re just…” She lightly glanced at him who was looking at her, mirroring the same smile she had. “Just patching things up and fixing ourselves.” Yuta continued for her.
“Is there a possibility of a come back?”
Y/N giggled before pointing at Yuta. “NCT is coming back with a new album. I’m preparing for a fall comeback.” The guy laughed at that. “Yuta, do you want to be featured in my album?”
He nodded immediately. “Will you write me a love song?”
She grinned, shaking her head playfully. “I’m not gonna write you a love song~” she sang before laughing. Yuta chuckled, poking her side playfully. “But we’ll see.”
The fan asked what they had been up to. Y/N shared that she’s writing songs for her album and Yuta saying that he hangs out with the members often and the preparations for their comeback. “I’ve been hanging out with Jaehyun a lot.” he claimed, “I’ve been liking his music choices lately.”
“You’re already done with your rocker state?” She asked, feigning a shock. “What song have you been listening to lately?”
Yuta smiled, taking his phone out of his pocket. He played the song and Y/N smiled that there’s still a rockish feel on it.  (Song)
Oh, all my emotions feel like explosions when you are around
Yuta mouthed the words, trying to look for comments but his gaze was on her while jamming on the song. A smile crept his lips and he saw how one fan pointed out that he’s so in love with her. He is.
“This song is so nice.”
“Honestly, it kinda reminds me of you.”
He’s singing ‘She’s a, She’s a lady And I am just a boy’
He’s singing ‘She’s a, She’s a lady’ And I am just a line without a hook’
Oh baby, I am a wreck when I’m without you I need you here to stay
She looked surprised when Yuta sang the lines of the songs. The side of his lips curled up when he saw the sparkle back in her eyes. They talked a bit about what fans should watch out from their respective schedules. They said goodbye in a lively manner before Yuta ended the V-live.
Y/N leaned on the couch, breathing heavily. She lightly glanced at Yuta and he smiled. “Want to get some sushi?” She nodded, grinning widely.
Yuta cannot shake her off. Like a ghost, she will keep haunting him. And hopefully, she can come back to him.

In the darkness, there are no rules (part 5)
*later that day*
After that incident, the whole rec room was muted. No one said a word, no one spoke, no looked at one another. No one dared to do this. Not Sionis, not Greenwood - no one.
Even the cops were a little worried about all the inmates. It never has been that quiet in Arkham. There was no intruder who danced around and mumbled any shit. There was no one who tried to mess with the cops or anyone else.
Jerome had scared them away. He earned all their respect. He became a king in Arkham, or let's better say an emperor. He just needed to snip with his fingers and several inmates were provided to do him a favor. He didn't need to make a move anymore - inmates brought him his food, the water he wanted to drink, the newspapers if he had the urge to read. The happening resembled a monarchy. A king sat on his throne while all his servants worked for him 24 hours a day.
For Scarlet it was the best time to read the newspaper, without anyone who got on her nerves. There was nothing new in the world that would interest her: robberies in banks, reports about upcoming festivals, and an older guy named Theo Gallavan standing for Gotham's new major. It was quite a boring time in Gotham, Scarlet thought, there was no new criminal who put the fear of God into Gotham's citizens. Too bad Scarlet sat here in Arkham. She had so many ideas to hit headlines: Placing bombs at the train station, shooting at cops... things like that. And now with Jerome on her side, Gotham would end in ruins.
Yawning of boredom, Scarlet turned a page and suddenly found an article about her family:
***
Patel residence on sale after murder!
After the incident, the attempting murder on Adrian Patel and his deceased girlfriend Kyle Trivenfold, the young man decided to sell the 600 square meters big villa for his own good.
This house belonged to the Patel family for 6 generations.
The interior decoration includes furnishings built in Renaissance times, paintings of famous artists like Van Gogh, Picasso and da Vinci. The villa's value adds up to 14.5 million dollars.
"This house brings up memories, good ones but primarily the bad. Each day, I enter my home I'm traumatized. I see my dead girlfriend sitting next to me while my my own flesh and blood, my sister Scarlett Patel, stabs her and slits her throat. Day and night I hear her screams and sobs. It has to end." The 23 year old law student stated "It was a big loss for me, seeing my beloved girlfriend die. She was my soulmate, my one and only. I will love her and miss her deeply. But I have to move on now."
3 weeks ago, Patel's youngest family member, Scarlett Patel, attempted to murder her brother and his girlfriend in the middle of the night. By Adrian's own account, the 17 year old teenager tied them up on chairs after knocking them out with a hammer. In the following, she tortured her victims with cuts and stabs on several body parts. As Adrian said, killing Kyle was an attempt to torture him and she was just annoying, a quote Scarlett has said before she slit her throat.
"I still can't believe it was my little sister." Adrian said "She was an angel. I never thought she would be capable of a murder. She was so shy and so quiet. She was innocent in person."
Currently, Scarlett Patel is busted in Arkham for confessed murder.
The GCPD told the murder on Kyle Trivenfold was not the only murder the young teenager has confessed. She confessed her committed parricide 2 years ago, as the following murders on several employees of her deceased father.
***
Interesting, my brother is moving away, Scarlet thought. She just wondered where to? Was he leaving the city or even the state? It was clear, she needed to find it out. She didn't like unfinished work at all. She remembered that little game she played with him and his now dead girlfriend. It was so fun, but sadly this fun was interrupted - good for her, she now had enough time to plan a masterly kill and a glorious break-out. Good to know, she had Jerome on her side so she could ask him for several ideas how to perfectly torture a human being - and of course how to break out. He knew Arkham inside out, he knew every shift change, every shift breaks, every time the cops came and disappeared. He was the expert she needed.
While reading, Scarlet observed Jerome a little. He sat on another table with Aaron Helzinger, Greenwood and Sionis.
Not long ago, she and Jerome decided to form a plan to escape - but not alone. Alone, it would be way too dangerous. The chances to get caught were too high - so they needed a good distraction: Aaron should be the aggressive bodyguard if any special safety was needed, Greenwood the spy - he's a suspicious one, that's why. He was like a ghost. Nobody noticed him whenever he sat or stood next to a person, so he overheard everything people said; and Sionis ordered several resources you needed due to his old job as a businessman. He could get arms, money, and a roof over your heads near Gotham. He probably was the most useful mate in the group.
"Whatcha reading, sweet cheeks?" Jerome suddenly strolled over to her with a big grin on his face, taking a seat next to her. He admired her again, sitting there like a queen on her throne.
"An article," She said "My brother wants to sell our home because of this tragic accident he sadly had with me and his dead girlfriend" she spat "He's an idiot. Cannot even handle a triviality without running away from all the shit"
"Sounds like your brother is a party pooper. I hate these people. Just can't take a joke, can they?" He sighed "My mother was the same. Couldn't take the joke when I set things on fire in her van"
"Yeah" Scarlet commented somewhat disinterestedly, putting the newspaper aside "he's always been like that. Another reason why I wanna kill that pussy. He fucking annoys me."
She remembered every single day where her brother argued with his dad or was in any other critical situation. He always ran away from it. It was like he was even scared of disputes, as if his brain signaled he was in a dangerous situation and he needed to escape. He was a pussy, you can tell.
"Lucky you, you have me now, doll" Jerome wrapped his arm around her tightly with a smile "I know methods how to erase a problem best"
"That's what I thought" Scarlet smirked "but we should first focus on our plan to escape. The thing with my brother can wait"
"C'mon doll," Jerome nudged her playfully "Why being so boring when having some fun at making torture plans? Don't be as boring as all the others here." He didn't really understand what her problem was. Why couldn't she plan two different things at the same time? It wasn't that hard.
"I prefer organized fun, Jerome, which means step by step. We don't even have discussed the details of how to escape. I don't work with rugged shit." She knew what she was talking about. Why else would she now sit in Arkham? Right, because she forgot about the details like checking on the neighbors' sleeping time or making her victims shut up with towels.
"Fine then, be a boring planner" Jerome rolled his eyes with an annoyed sigh, "Anyways, Greenwood's keeps complaining about Dobkins. Said he's making him feel awkward," Jerome snorted.
"Too bad," Scarlet snorted, "Dobkins is useful with his little issue. He's a good distraction, already included in our plan." Now she faced Jerome "You can tell Greenwood: Any complainants, deadly consequences. I'm not joking." Oh, Scarlet was harsh with this stuff - she was a perfectionist. If anything did not work as she had planned, she flipped out.
"Didn't know you're that feisty, doll" Jerome grinned wider, then he turned her to him leaning his arms on her upper thighs; their faces were inches away from each other. "I like that."
"And I'm a lot more," She smirked, closing the newspaper and throwing it on the table, "Now about the plan. I figured to escape in the early morning, around 4 since shift change is at 3:30. Most cops are gone, others just start to get ready, make coffee...vice versa - that's what Greenwood told me. Sionis makes sure a friend of his turns all cameras off, this friend opens Dobkins and Sionis' cell. Dobkins runs through the asylum distracting the cops while Sionis opens our cells informing us about the current situation. His friend brings us arms then we kill and escape."
"Had a similar plan...mine included some more BOOM! and POW! and BANG! I'd prefer mine." Jerome hummed pursing his lips. He gave her a look signaling her his plan was actually a lot better than hers. Hers was pretty boring. There was no real action, nothing that seemed exciting. Everyone else would make a plan like that, he thought, he didn't want to work with that.
"I'm listening." I crossed my arms, she knew he did that provocation on purpose "Tell me your plan."
"So," he started folding his hands "We firstly distract the cops with some bombs, most of them get killed by them when they start running to that certain place. Then Sionis' little friend opens my door, handing me a pump gun to shoot your door open, while his friend opens the other doors - eventually. You know, liberating them is like pissing in the wind."
"Interesting," She nodded .'I'm just not a fan of attention when trying to escape. Too many risks. Cops get aware of it faster, call for Back-up...Media gets aware of it... Very compelling, just not my type."
"Ugh..." Jerome rolled his eyes in annoyance "Where's the fun doll? An organized unobtrusive escape...that's boring, it's not special, not ordinary because everybody does this. Don't be so stubborn with your concepts, enjoy fun."
"Fun comes after work." She rolled her eyes "I don't like being distracted nor do I like making accidental mistakes that are caused by bombs or anything."
"Fine then," Jerome rolled his eyes with a loud sigh "Sounds pretty boring, but fine, doll. We do whatever makes you happy"
"You won't regret it, Jerome"

Titled “V” (and stylized as “卌” by Johnny), the UNIQUE painting was created by the British artist Preston Jones, who has worked several times with Johnny to raise awareness and funds for major charities. Although not much information is known, it was created in 2020 and described for being an acrylic on canvas, embellished and signed by Johnny, and has its image and canvas size 1000mm x 1000mm.
> Personalized by Johnny.
The art was specially decorated by Johnny himself using blue, green, red and white markers over the original piece. A video was released showing the behind the scenes of the creation with Johnny and the Hollywood Vampires’ “Heroes” as background song. Although it’s unknown where it was filmed, it seems to have happened sometime  in April 2021 sometime after/before Johnny travel to Barcelona for the the Spanish premiere of “Minamata”. Although Johnny has his own meaning behind the “V” (or 5/five in Roman numerals), his stylized “ 卌”, is named Tally Marks (or Hash Marks) which are most useful in counting or tallying ongoing results, and mostly known for being used in prisons to count days. > Meaning: Why five? Interesting, if you gather all this information and imagine why this number would be so important in Johnny’s life, you come to a possible meaning: The amount of years Johnny has been suffering with Ms. Heard hoax: 5 years (2016 - 2021)
> Original Version and Original Photo:
The current painting was slightly altered in its colors from the original version, which is based on a photo from the photoshoot of “Dior” in 2015.

> Charity:
Pantheon has a philanthropic mission, and in our major collaborative projects with celebrities we make substantial donations to charities chosen by those celebrities. Johnny chose to donate his entire proceeds from the sale of these artworks to charity (which starts at £2,000) to two institutions: The “Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity”, the hospital Johnny is forever thankful for saving Lily-Rose’s life in 2007 when she was hospitalized after contracting an E. Coli infection that caused kidney failure, and to the “Los Angeles Children’s Hospital”, the hospital that Johnny has been making charitable donations for a long time.
 > About the Project: “Character Beyond Celebrity” Collection.

Courtney going on tour right after?
Theres a misconception that after Kurts death, Courtney went straight on tour right away. This is false. The album was already set to release a few days after and they couldnt change that on such a short notice. Promotion for the album was cancelled and she pushed back the tour 4 months.
“Live Through This was supposed to provide Love an opportunity to step out from her famous husband’s shadow. “It’s annoying now, and it’s been annoying for nine years, Love said in a 1999 Jane Magazine interview of always being connected to Cobain. Released four days after Cobain’s body was found, the album’s promotion was put on hold. Rather than retreat from the public eye, Love openly mourned and helped fans of Cobain and Nirvana make sense of the singer’s death. She sat with grieving teenagers gathered outside the couple’s Seattle home and recorded a reading of parts of his suicide note that was played at the singer’s memorial that gathered near the Space Needle. In the days following his death, Love showed a very raw and emotional side and admitted that, like many fans, she didn’t have all the answers.
It was, and still is, impossible for people to discuss Live Through This without noting the irony of the album’s title. Love has said the name was not a prediction at all, but instead a reflection of all she had endured in the months leading up to its release, including a very public custody fight with the Los Angeles Department of Family Services over daughter Frances Bean. Rumors suggested that Cobain had written much of Live Through This (it’s Miss World, not Mister, just FYI). “I’d be proud as hell to say that he wrote something on it, but I wouldn’t let him. It was too Yoko for me. It’s like, ‘No fucking way, man! I’ve got a good band, I don’t fucking need your help,’” was Love’s response to critics in Spin’s oral history of Live Through This. Love and Cobain often shared notebooks and lyrics with each other, and while there is talk of Cobain’s influence on Love’s work, or the writing of all of it, less is mentioned in the press of her impact on his lyrics and music. Rather than sucking all the life out of Nirvana or threatening the success of the band, like many assumed she would do, she inspired Cobain. Fun fact: In Utero, Nirvana’s last album, was named after a line from one of Love’s poems.
Sadly, songwriting rumors would be replaced by other rumors. Women are often vilified and condemned for the deaths of their male partners. Love, like all women, was supposed to save her partner from death and addiction. Fans of Cobain projected all their anger and resentment over the loss of the Nirvana front man onto Love, and soon she was blamed for not only his addiction but also his death. There are even two movies devoted to the theory that Courtney killed Kurt: the awful Soaked in Bleach (2015) and the equally awful Kurt & Courtney (1998). If you think we’ve come a long way, baby, sadly we haven’t.
One year after Anthony Bourdain’s death, Asia Argento is still being blamed, and in September 2018, Ariana Grande had to take a break from social media after fans blamed her for the death of her ex Mac Miller. A few months later, she would be blamed for new beau Pete Davidson’s mental health and addiction issues. It’s amazing she finds the time to write hit songs what with all the dude destruction she has going on. When women are not being blamed for the deaths of the men in their lives, they are being attacked for not grieving properly. “She wasn’t crying. She’s got $30 million coming to her. Do you blame her for being so cool?” a hospital staffer said of Yoko Ono following John Lennon’s murder in 1980.
About four months after Cobain’s death, Love went on tour to promote her new album. Some questioned and judged why she would go on tour so soon, but Love has said it was a necessity. She had a young daughter to support. She needed to work. She also, sadly, still needed to prove herself. “I would like to think that I’m not getting the sympathy vote, and the only way to do that is to prove that what I’ve got is real,” Love told Rolling Stone in 1994.
Twenty-five years later, Cobain’s death still hangs over Live Through This. In the days leading up to the anniversary of Cobain’s death, former Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur wrote an open letter to music magazine Kerrang saying she “would not stand for Kurt’s death overshadowing the life and work of the women he left behind this year.”
“We were extremely well designed for each other,” Love has said of her relationship with Cobain. In a letter reprinted in Dirty Blonde: The Diaries of Courtney Love, she calls him “my everything. the top half on my fraction.” The two had similar upbringings, both came from broken homes and spent childhoods shuttling between relatives and friends. They both grew up longing for love and acceptance. When we tell the story of Kurt and Courtney we talk about drugs and destruction, but we don’t talk enough about love.
The two also shared an intense drive and ambition. “I didn’t want to marry a rock star, I wanted to be one,” Love said in a 1992 Sassy interview. Evidence of her drive can be found in the many notes and to-do lists she kept, some of which are collected in Dirty Blonde. There are reminders to send her acting résumé to agencies, to write three to four new songs a week, to “achieve L.A. visibility.” A scene in the documentary Kurt & Courtney features an ex of Love’s reading from one of her to-do lists, which has “become friends with Michael Stipe” as the number one task to complete (not only did Love do this, but he is her daughter’s godfather). This ambition is not surprising from a woman who, when she was younger, mailed a tape of herself singing to Neil Sedaka in hopes of getting signed. Love knew what she wanted at an early age, and what she wanted was fame.
She was certainly living by the “do not hurt yourself, destroy yourself, mangle yourself to get the football captain. Be the football captain!” motto she championed in the 1995 documentary Not Bad for a Girl. Ambition is often a dirty word when it is used to describe women and Love is no exception. She has been repeatedly described as calculating and controlling when she should be rewarded for her blond ambition and viewed as an inspiration. Critics and the press often call her a gold digger who only married Cobain for fame and money. They fail to mention that when the two met Pretty on the Inside was actually selling more copies than Bleach, Nirvana’s debut album. Even post-Kurt, Love’s intentions were always under scrutiny. On the Today Show to do press for The People vs. Larry Flynt, Love refused to talk about her past drug use, despite the host’s repeated questions, saying the topic was not an appropriate fit for the show’s demographic. She was right, but it didn’t stop a writer from describing the move as “calculating” in a 1998 Spin piece.
Cobain was ambitious too; he was just much slyer and more secretive about it. He was known to call his manager and complain when MTV didn’t play Nirvana’s videos enough, and he would correct journalists who misquoted the band’s sales figures in interviews. While success is typically celebrated and rewarded for men and it certainly was for Cobain, he also had to be mindful of the slacker generation that loved Nirvana and greeted success — and especially mainstream success —
While female celebrities like Love are criticized for their rebellion, male celebrities, like Cobain for example, are celebrated and mythologized for it. Cobain and Love both struggled with addiction, but it is Love who is repeatedly vilified for her drug use. “She was vilified for being a mess, for being a drug addict, for not being a great parent — in other words, all of the things we expect in a male rock star,” said Bust magazine in a piece in the magazine’s 20th anniversary issue, which featured Love on the cover.
We make jokes about the drug antics of male celebrities from Keith Richards to Charlie Sheen, idolizing their debauchery and depravity. The new Netflix/Lifetime movie by Jack Daniels, The Dirt, about Mötley Crüe, takes the band’s excesses to almost comic levels. Check out crazy tourmate Ozzy Osbourne snorting a line of ants by a hotel pool! Such zany antics! I would love to see Lindsay Lohan try to get away with that. We never allow women to live down their arrests and their addictions, but we repeatedly allow men to have a redemption arc. Robert Downey Jr. was in and out of jail and on and off drugs for much of the mid to late ’90s, but we rarely, if ever, talk about his past.
When Love isn’t being attacked for her addiction issues, she is being judged for her parenting. Love’s first unflattering press was “Strange Love,” the much publicized 1992 Vanity Fair profile by Lynn Hirschberg. While the piece talks at length about Love’s drug use and constantly questions her parenting ability, it doesn’t paint Cobain in the same light. “It is appalling to think that she would be taking drugs when she knew she was pregnant,” says one close friend in the piece. Hirschberg relies on many unnamed sources and focuses often on the tabloid-like aspects of Love’s life and addictions. “Courtney has a long history with drugs. She loves Percodans (‘They make me vacuum’), and has dabbled with heroin off and on since she was eighteen, once even snorting it in Room 101 of the Chelsea Hotel, where Nancy Spungen died,” she writes. “Reportedly, Kurt didn’t do much more than drink until he met Courtney.” (Even when it is reported by Kurt and Krist that Kurt tried heroin in 1989, way before Courtney, It was also known that he smoked weed and used caugh syrup to get high in 1989 and 1990.)
This double standard was common in coverage of the couple. In Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, the 2015 documentary by Brett Morgen, Love asks her husband, “Why does everyone think you’re the good one and I’m the bad one?” Later in the film we see a scene of Frances Bean’s first haircut. The child sits on Cobain’s lap while Love searches for a comb and scissors. The camera shows Cobain nodding off, and while he maintains that he is just tired, it’s clear he’s not. The scene is painful to watch, especially because those around Cobain carry on like nothing in wrong, giving the feeling this is just like any other day in the Love-Cobain household. The scene is a reminder of how the press treated Cobain’s addiction when he was alive. They just carried on like nothing was wrong, instead directing all their judgement at Love.

Botticelli 'The Man of Sorrows' Sells for $45.4 Million
The painting by the Renaissance master depicts a tearful Jesus Christ.
A painting by the Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli sold at Sotheby’s New York on Thursday for $45.4 million as part of the Master Paintings and Sculpture sale.
The work, which dates from about 1500 and is titled The Man of Sorrows, depicts a bereaved and beleaguered Jesus Christ, and carried an unofficial presale estimate “in excess of” $40 million. It is housed in a fittingly elaborate frame, which Sotheby’s says is likely from the 19th century.
The lot was guaranteed, meaning it had effectively already sold for an undisclosed base price; the only question, going into the auction, was if bidders would push it even higher.
“Botticelli is a name that everyone knows,” says Christopher Apostle, head of Sotheby’s old master paintings department in New York. “The joke in our department is: he’s not a Ninja Turtle, but he’s pretty close.” (For anyone not raised on cartoons, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were named after famous Renaissance artists.)
“So when we were pricing it,” Apostle continues, “we understood it was a major picture by a major artist, and that that artist’s major works don’t come to auction that often. The power of this image has a crossover appeal to someone who’s not a traditional old master buyer, and that warranted a pretty serious estimate.”
Botticelli vs. Botticelli
While a $45.4 million total is certainly nothing to sneer at, comparisons between this painting and Young Man Holding a Roundel, another Botticelli that sold for $92.2 million almost exactly one year ago, are inevitable. Last year’s Botticelli set a public sales record for the artist, whose previous record was just $10.4 million.
“If you compare it to the one that sold last year, this was estimated at half the price,” says Carlo Orsi, an old masters dealer in London and Milan, speaking of The Man of Sorrows. “The subject of this one is maybe more difficult. Last year’s is a young boy. It was more attractive in one sense.” But, Orsi continues, a Botticelli painting of any subject is still a Botticelli: “Just think about how rare and famous it is.”
Those two qualities alone managed to push the painting’s price to the second-highest public result for the artist.
Bidding for the painting began in earnest at $38 million, rising in short increments between $100,000 and $300,000 over more than six minutes. Two collectors, bidding over the phone, slowly pushed the price up to $39.3 million hammer; auction premiums added the rest.
The enthusiasm for the painting, and the price it achieved, are a continuation of a booming art market where prices have risen nearly across the board. Last year, the volume of transactions in the $5 million to $50 million range increased year over year at Sotheby’s by two thirds, and literally hundreds of auction records for artists were set across categories.
A Challenging Painting
Its religious subject matter, Apostle says, wasn’t an impediment to the painting’s success. Interest came from all corners of the globe, “across cultures and continents.”
“No one’s said to me: I’m in a non-Catholic country, this doesn’t appeal,” he continues. “We toured this everywhere. It went to Los Angeles, London, New York, Dubai, Hong Kong, and I will tell you it’s been admired everywhere. It really doesn’t matter what culture they’re from.”
Indeed, one of the dominant themes of the art market this past year has been a commitment to whatever is perceived of as “the best,” regardless of what period the work is from. “In the old masters market, since 2014, lots bought buy Asian collectors have doubled,” Apostle says.
The buyer of the work was not immediately known, but, speaking in advance of the sale, Apostle says that the buyer would be someone who is unafraid of a challenge.
“This is not a low-maintenance painting,” he says, speaking of its emotional subject matter. “His head is tilted slightly, his eyes are red from crying, he’s showing you the suffering and humanity of God.”

You Can See Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel Without Flying to Italy — Here's How
See the Sistine Chapel this summer — without getting on a plane.
By Meena Thiruvengadam July 23, 2021
You don't have to fly all the way to Italy to catch a glimpse of the gorgeous Sistine Chapel this summer.
Full-sized replicas of the iconic Michelangelo piece are popping up in cities across the U.S., making it easier than ever to envelop yourself in the world-famous work of art without having to navigate crowded airports, flight cancellations, or ever-evolving COVID-19 restrictions.
Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition, which is already open in Chicago, San Antonio, and Charlotte, North Carolina, is set to open in New York and San Francisco in September and in Los Angeles in late August. Other cities on the itinerary include Miami, Boston, Philadelphia, and Detroit.
The reproductions are made using licensed, high-definition photographs of the artist's 34 Sistine Chapel frescoes, a group that includes "The Creation of Adam" and "The Last Judgment." However, instead of being mounted on the ceiling — as several are at the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City — they'll be displayed at eye level to give visitors the chance to get up close and personal with every detail and brushstroke.
Michelangelo painted the famous Sistine Chapel ceiling between 1508 and 1512, returning to add "The Last Judgment," an iconic piece depicting God reaching his hand out to Adam, in 1535.
The works of art amount to more than 5,000 square feet of painted area, according to "Michelangelo, Life, Letters, and Poetry" published by the Oxford University Press in 1999.
Step into the Sistine Chapel like never before

Exhibit organizers recommend allocating between 60 and 90 minutes to complete the experience.
Tickets for the New York exhibit are scheduled to go on sale on July 27. And if you don't see your city on the list, don't fret. Immersive art exhibits featuring work from painters such as Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet also are making their way across the U.S.

Stepping foot into the mansion, it was easy to tell just how much this Truffle woman loved spiders. Aside from the various paintings depicting strange, distorted versions of famous paintings and people beneath the webbing- there was plenty of décor with webbed and spidery themes. The chandeliers above, the designs upon the carpets through the halls, the legs and knobs of stands and shelves beheld themselves to plenty of arachnid pleasantry. This woman either had plenty of time on her hands to scrounge through garage sales or was just utterly obsessed with these eight-legged creatures.
"So, you two certainly have had a troublesome time before you came here, am I correct?" Truffle spoke, looking over her shoulder at the two who kept close for their own safety. "I can see through many eyes that you both have suffered grave losses from something bloody, yes?"
"I-is... Is it that obvious...?" Mint would sputter, not quite used to being surrounded by such an arachnid-centric interior... Ah, and having something so grim being so clear to who was essentially a stranger was something to fear as well. There was only a surprisingly pure laugh from the widow-lover, who would raise a hand to have an abnormally large spider lower down onto her palm. "Spiders have many eyes... And can see beyond what even those who feast upon blood can. That, and I do happen to have a spectral friend visiting today that can see even further."
The last sentence spoken brought the researcher's scrutiny. "So you are implying you are friends with a ghost? And that spectral life exists?"
Truffle paused, stopping in her tracks. The spindly portions of her dress seemed to twitch before she turned around, facing the two with mild confusion. Mint shook at the sight, gripping onto Aloe's hand that he'd forgotten he'd been holding, thinking that the host had been accidentally upset. "I would think you would know this, considering you have one with you... Quite the gleeful one, too." There was a moment where Aloe was taken aback, and despite how they were here for a hopeful purpose, this... Didn't make sense. "There is no way you would know them. You could use that word to describe any positive soul- if specters were to exist in the first place."
A hum hung in the air, along with the skittering of various legs from above. The both of them looked up, seeing nothing but spiders, and only looked back down to see that Truffle was petting the bug they were holding that was... A plush? A doll? Something of the sort. "Pardon them, they are just not used to doubtful ones." It was unclear as to whether Truffle's tone was meant to comfort, but it most certainly didn't help on this occasion. "They do not harm unless commanded or attacked, so you are both safe with my presence... Just as you both are with that bright-eyed, leafy botanist with you." Mint's gaze would snap to Aloe, whose expression was such a mix it was practically unreadable. "Consider them a guardian angel, but lacking in the angelic portion. They will keep you safe for the time being... Though I believe they won't be able to protect for much longer."
"What are you on abou-?" "Now come along, the tea must be getting quite cold! I hope you both don't mind it being reheated... Though I can always make a new batch if necessary."
Though Aloe wished to inquire, it was clear that Truffle was going to have none of such at the moment. The walk through the mansion would continue, with the little critters on the ceiling dispersing for the most part. There was an odd clump of them in particular that followed, almost making some sort of vaguely human form upon the ceiling. Just for a second Aloe figured it could have been the one they were here in the first place for, but... They didn't let such an idea cement itself. The prospect of ghosts and spirits was already enough for their mind to mull over for the time. A guardian? But not for long? Do they only have a certain amount of time to linger before they truly pass or something of that sort...? "Hey... Aloe... If- If I may..." Mint spoke nothing above a whisper. The researcher looked down, seeing a nervous yet smiling musician looking up at them.
"I... Don't have full confidence in spirits and all that, but... Hey, if someone that dear to you is still by your side... Maybe you could talk to them in private...?" Mint seemed more than embarrassed to suggest this, yet pressed further on his point. "Ask Truffle if there's a room you can speak alone in for a while, now that you know they're probably still around... And she and I can have some tea, maybe?" "And leave you alone?" The response was quicker- snippier- than Mint thought it would be. Be that as it may, it should be expected knowing the subject matter... "I can- I can handle myself better than I've shown... Besides, I am quite a fan of spiders... Most house spiders just stick around for bugs to eat- I learned that from Orie..." The light smile on the violinist's face was a delicate one. Aloe wasn't sure if they could snip at something like that- seeing a bit of someone else there before them. Ah- their mind was more wrapped up around Co than they had anticipated, huh. "I'm just saying, perhaps... Perhaps you could talk to them? Have a moment of peace and come to terms, speaking the things you want while you can? I did the same long ago... With a late aunt of mine..."
"..." Even if there were many walls kept up by Aloe, Mint felt in this moment that he was just a bit closer to getting those down. The researcher adjusted their glasses, taking a deep breath before their gaze would return in front of them rather than being stuck looking upon the shorter of the two. "I, too, doubt spirits, but perhaps you have a point... A moment of peace would be highly appreciated... Your suggestion is not half-bad." "I'll... take that as a compliment...!" "As you should."
From there on, the atmosphere seemed to feel lighter. It was a small change, albeit one that was certainly felt between the two. The cups are already set, so come right in and have a seat..." "Ah, before that, Miss... Truffle, was it?" "Yes, sweetheart?" "May I... Have a moment alone? Mint here will be able to accompany you with your tea. I simply wish to have some time to myself before I partake." "Of course... You may remain here in the hall or the room on the other end of the hall if you wish." "...My thanks."
