I do think we as a fandom need to have an honest conversation about how discord has kinda taken so many of us away from communicating and interacting with the fandom as a whole.
I understand there are certain bonds and friendships formed and people you start talking to consistently over others. But if it’s gotten to the point where those are the ONLY people you interact with, whether on discord or the tumblr dash, it can become extremely alienating to the rest of the fandom.
Things across the fandom have gotten kinda cliquey. And I am more than sure I have contributed to this as well! So in a way, this is a realization for myself too.
Don’t become so invested in the two or three groups of friends you’re apart of that you forget everyone else. There are always new people on here to interact with and if people realize that you’re in some kind of group in a different space that they arent they can become intimidated or feel like they’re intruding. I never want to make anyone feel that way.
I want to talk to everyone. I want everyone to feel like they can share thoughts on each others posts. I want everyone to feel like they can comment on someone’s works again.
I’m not saying discord is the main reason why tumblr fandom has been really off lately. (Because let’s be honest there’s been a myriad of other issues from tumblr itself that has led people to seek out other sites and I don’t blame them) but I think it’s contributing to making fandom spaces feel so selective and small and I really want to put a stop to that the best way I can.
We’re literally all just nerds on this site obsessed with the same crazy fandom shit and I want to do my best to get back to the inclusive and collaborative space this used to be.

I feel like fandom ought to remember that artists who are involved in official projects should be allowed to be fans just as much as anyone else.
This has a two-fold implication— first, artists like VA’s and illustrators for official novel releases should be allowed to, when not doing it for work, make whatever sort of headcanons or fanworks they want to regardless of canonical integrity. There’s no reason they shouldn’t be allowed to be an ordinary part of fandom if they want to be, or to enjoy the thing they were involved in, and they shouldn’t be held to some kind of higher standard than other fans— because when they’re off the clock, that’s what they are.
At the same time, fandom needs to understand this and not put these artists on a pedestal— meaning, not taking everything they say as word of god canon. If a VA has a headcanon about their character that isn’t confirmed by the creator, that’s just their headcanon— which is okay! Similarly, if an artist who worked on the official release posts ship art of a non-canon ship on their art account, that doesn’t make it any more canon. It just means that this fan, who happened to be involved in the official project, likes this ship. Even if their character designs are approved for the official work, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re canon-accurate (unless you’re using a tiered canon).
Anyway, let artists be people and enjoy things without holding them to a higher standard than the rest of the fandom. I love it when fans get to work on official projects. I think that’s super great! But let them also be fans.

i've been feeling horrendous about my writing for months now after finding someone writing the same pairing as i was and everyone just... likes her so much better than me. people are drawing fanart of her works and she's gotten so popular and i know i'm not entitled to fanart - that's not what this is about. i feel like a complete failure compared to her and i'm consumed. it feels like everything i ever wrote about that pairing is pointless and that i should just delete it all because honestly, who would care anyway? i don't like writing anymore
I think you will find fandom experience a lot more enjoyable if, instead of looking at it as a competition where there must be a winner and a runner up, you try looking at it as a community where people who share the same interests come together to talk and post about their shared interests.
personally, I like having lots of people write about my comfort ship, because that means I can enjoy more content about my blorbos. I’ve briefly talked about how hits and kudos aren’t everything when it comes to writing fanfics, so maybe you could check that out and see if it can help you feel at least a little better?
but if seeing that person’s work become popular still bothers you, maybe you can mute or block them for the sake of your mental health?
again, fandoms should be about joy and fun, not competition or anxiety. if what you’re doing costs you your mental health, maybe it’s for the best you step away for a while and see if you feel better? I’m sorry to hear you’ve lost interest in writing. but I will not advise anybody to force themself to keep writing if writing comes at the expense of their mental health. fanfics, just like fandom, should be about joy and fun and it should be your getaway. not a job or a competition. so maybe some time off could benefit you. and you can always come back anytime you’re ready.
my advice, though, is that you write for yourself because you love your comfort characters (and the act of getting to write about them alone makes you happy), not for strangers’ approval.
your mental health should always be the priority. I wish you all the best, anon.

a big fan of any fictional relationship that has the dynamic of “they made themselves better for me, I made myself worse for them, we humanized each other in ways that no one else had ever really been able to, because, in the end, they’re the one I’m human with the most” no one’s doing it like that

Summary: Technoblade stared down at Tommy, his red eyes nearly glowing in the darkness. “I don’t think you’ve understood me, Theseus. You don't get to leave. You are mine.” Tommy knew Techno enough now that he was beyond stubborn. No matter how much Tommy would scream his protests until he was blue in the face, Techno would never listen. Well, guess what! Tommy was about to reverse uno card this bitch. Tommy reached up, grabbing Techno’s shirt and pulling him closer. Lightning flashed. He bared his teeth hissing out, “if I’m yours, you son of a bitch, then you’re fucking mine too!” The thunder boomed, as if to seal the deal. .. In which the world class master thief Tommy Innit is given the ultimate challenge: steal a Technoblade. It goes as bad as you’d think it would.

Note from submitter: All Relationships are Platonic in the fic. Mind the tags because it has some dark aspects.

I really think everyone needs to truly internalize this:
Fictional characters are objects.
They are not people. You cannot "objectify" them, because they have no personhood to be deprived of. They have no humanity to be erased. You cannot "disrespect" them, because they are not real.

i do unironically think the best artists of our generation are posting to get 20 notes and 3 reblogs btw. that fanfic with like 45 kudos is some of the best stuff ever written. those OCs you carry around have some of the richest backstories and worldbuilding someone has ever seen. please do not think that reaching only a few people when you post means your art isn't worth celebrating.

You! American fan of foreign or otherwise un-American media! Are you aware of the nuances and cultural differences that are portrayed in that media and have an understanding that you as an outsider looking in should be careful with the lenses you analyze that media in because you have a different perspective that is not catered to?

Had to share this here because you're right and you should say it. It's incredible how many people came out of the woodwork as soon as AO3 was down and suddenly had no compunctions at all about screaming how much they love and need fanfic--on the AO3 twitter. Is it so much harder to do in the comment section?
At this point I don't care anymore if people call me entitled or think I'm out of line. If fanfic is so meaningful to you that you cannot go half an hour without, let alone 24h, then you can get over yourself long enough to write a fucking comment. No excuses.
"writing comments is hard and scary" yeah well GUESS WHAT so is writing fanfics. fandom as a community is dying, because it is instead treated as a COMMODITY, a CONSUMER PRODUCT. We're not asking for much. We're asking for a CONNECTION. We don't want to sell, we want to share.
You've shown your hand. You've admitted you cannot live without us. Now ACT LIKE IT. Go write a fucking comment.
