Why 'Farmgate' is jeopardizing Cyril Ramaphosa's attempt to clean up South African politics
Why ‘Farmgate’ is jeopardizing Cyril Ramaphosa’s attempt to clean up South African politics
South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa, has been faced with a subpoena by a public watchdog investigating a scandal that might jeopardize his administration. Details of what local media has dubbed “Farmgate” have been leaking for months, entangling the president in a plot that could have been stolen from from one of the country’s popular compelling and gritty TV crime shows. The narrative…

The dairy industry is shrinking. It has lost 20 per cent of its farmers in the five years since 2017. The reduction in farmers has seen national milk production decline, and now processors are offering close to $10 a kilogram of milk solids (kgms) as they vie for a declining supply. The national commodity forecaster ABARES projected average dairy farm incomes to rise 35 per cent to $338,000 per farm in 2021-22, and again next year, thanks to higher farmgate milk prices. But any increases over the coming year will be heavily moderated by the soaring costs of fuel, fertiliser, and feed for cattle.

“From 2003-2016, bread prices rose steadily, far outpacing the minor increases in farmgate wheat prices,” NFU’s submission from last week explained. Farmgate prices are the prices of goods bought directly from farmers without markup added by retailers. The union says the costs borne by consumers have been completely detached from the prices paid to farmers since the 2000s.  “Farmgate prices for wheat did increase in 2021 and 2022, potentially driven by the war in Ukraine and other factors. However, they did not come close to narrowing the gap that has steadily widened since the beginning of this data series.”
[...]
Five retailers—Loblaw, Sobeys, Metro, Costco and Walmart—control 75 per cent of Canada’s food retail market. In processing, the Canadian market is even more consolidated in some cases. Just two corporations—one of which was owned by Loblaw parent company George Weston Ltd. until recently—control 80 per cent of the bread-making market, for example.
The result is that farmers are facing dire financial circumstances, Pfenning said. They’re struggling with increased costs for virtually everything they need to grow food: land, equipment, soil amendments and more. Yet the prices they’re paid are virtually stagnant.
“Farmers and consumers are clearly in the same boat,” NFU vice president Stewart Wells said in a press release about the new data, “dealing with a highly consolidated processing and retail sector that can set prices to suit themselves and award enormous salaries to corporate CEOs.”

This is sad, and worrying.
Over the last few months farmgate prices for milk have fallen drastically. At the same time animal feed, energy and labour costs have increased. At the moment most small dairy farms are selling their milk for less than it costs to produce. I recently spoke with a farmer in Gloucestershire who was selling one of his most valuable cows in order to pay the bills. While that will help him in the short-term, it is not good for the longer term future of his farm.
I bought the Dorset dairy farm in 2018 for all the wrong reasons... mainly because my mother loved cows. I t was running at a loss, and all the barns and farm buildings were outdated and in urgent need of refurbishment.
On the plus side, the dairy farm had a huge amount of unused land (which has allowed us to expand our arable farm production), and also had a rather large farmhouse and eight cottages.
The purchase price of the dairy was relatively cheap, but the amount of money I invested in renovating and building new barns, and the robotic milking system was huge! (I currently doubt if I will ever get this money back.)
In 2021, I decided to spend more money on an anaerobic digestor... which turns cow poo into electricity, with no active support from UK Power Networks. I was just in time to get a 50% rebate on the cost of installation from the EU... but nothing from the UK Government.
This last big investment means that both farms are almost self-sufficient for electricity will help us survive the currently low, and fluctuating market prices of both milk and grain.

Tropaeolum (nasturtium cultivar: “Peach Melba”)
Peach Melba
I like nasturtiums in general (see my earlier post, ‘Nasty’ but Nice!) and this particular cultivar, Peach Melba, is my fave. I took these photos at our local farmgate operation, Mary’s Garden. Vancouver gets a lot of it’s produce from California but locally grown stuff is much better quality. Agricultural land like this is scarce (and precious) in the Vancouver area and we have provincial legistlation, the  Agricultural Land Reserve, to protect it.

A Week of Being The 'Odd' One
Initially I thought I was gonna go home and write a sad post but turns out i'm too comfortable with myself to be sad. This week i've been called lots of things. Starting with "depressed" and "too introverted", while I was actually the most at peace with myself. As the tiffin time circle was growing larger and larger and the gossip was getting too intense. I found my place in the library and got lost in the world of Humayun Ahmed. Tua would eventually figure out where i'd be and spend time with me.
On the opposite side of being called "depressed", I've also heard, "তুই এত শান্ত ক্যামনে, তোরে দেখলে চ্যাত উঠে". And I think me laughing at that made her even more চ্যাতা.
This week has also been one of my favourites. We always have so much time before class starts. Me and Raisa would go around exploring the 'tongs' and 'restoras' around our college. Sometimes others would tag along. This was also sports week so I could leave at 9:20 and go around taking photos with my Nokia 3310. I have quite the collection of Farmgate photos now. This was also the week of coming home by metro. Figuring out how the ticket machine worked or which side of the stairs I was supposed to take and memorising all the stops from Agargaon to Motijheel for no necessary reason. I do prefer my brtc bus rides more. Especially after that time our Psychology miss sat next to me and paid for my bus fare. Still something about the sounds of the station takes me back. And the silly hope of maybe seeing a very familiar face in the crowd one day. Bhuiyan is indeed shitty. But at least they drop off closer to my home.
This week was like seeing a reflection of who I was becoming. "Mind your own business" has been on my new year's resolution this year and I think i've mastered most of it this week. From solo rickshaw rides then solo bus rides to solo metro rides. I've become more and more comfortable with my own company. And honestly, i'm pretty fun to be around.
