I saw some discussions of the clothing choices of 70′s Rashid vs modern day Louis & Rashmand which got me thinking. I am living, and I’m now itching to write a paper again. In lieu of a paper however, here’s some thoughts.
I think there is a huge amount of nuance to the Dubai clothes and Carol Cutshall has been extremely clever throughout. This is a woman who knows her fashion history. Louis was fashionable, and he always will be fashionable. Hell, wearing a holey dusty jumper in the 80′s is a Margiela wet dream. And mine. Louis can do no wrong, but that is besides the point. But to say that Rashid made him boring is a little reductive I feel.
1970′s Rashid has a very mainstream fashionable look, wearing very much the colours of the era. The jewel tones we are familiar with book Armand wearing historically is a nice touch. Louis and Danny contrast him, wearing clothing which could be considered queer coded and referencing the Castro clones of the time. We see a lot of this style worn by the extras in this scene. Without seeing Danny and Louis from the waist down, we can't say for sure if they're clones, but there's definite vibes there. This style subverted typically masculine working class clothing such as denim and leather jackets, and repurposed as queer. Similarly, I think their clothing in Dubai references very much every day clothing, signifiers of the working classes. The idea of ‘working class’ clothing as a signifier of wealth is a well researched concept within fashion academia.
Chanel’s little black dress of the 1920′s was one of these moments, where the rich started to wear what was considered very simplistic ‘every day’ clothing, same with the way she popularised the working man’s Breton top as chic. The idea being that it takes money to dress so effortlessly, to not need any frivolity. Think the phrase ‘money talks, wealth whispers’. Those who can afford a life of luxury do not need to broadcast it; to them it just is. A recent example is Balenciaga’s pre-dirtied 1990′s style Adidas trainers, which will set you back a few thousand a pair.
Louis’ garments are exquisitely tailored and manufactured, particularly the high waisted trouser and knitted polo number. They play with gender; the tailored 1980′s inspired masculine trousers (there was a big resurgence of 1940′s fashion in the 80′s), yet there is a softness and feminity to the top, and the tucked in waist. In contrast to this, in his human years Louis had a role to play, he was the gentleman pimp; the masculine, tailored suits and loud colours mirror who he had to pretend to be.
Louis’ modern day clothes cost money; as do Rashid’s. They may be plain and minimalistic (IMO fucking stunning and effortlessly cool), but when you have lived for so long in a life of luxury, why would you need to broadcast it?
IMO the Dubai costumes mirror book Louis’ woolly jumpers in a contemporary context; I can totally see him wearing beautiful lounge wear. Louis’ fashion in the books and series mirrors his depths of depression, but also the presence or lackthereof of Lestat in his life. Lestat grew up in landed poverty. There is nothing quiet about Lestat's vampiric wealth, his fashion sense or life of luxury. That is just one of Lestat’s ways of dealing with his past.
Book Louis is generally clothed in dark colours, but black is clearly a choice, and I think we will know more in S2. What doesn’t make sense to me is minimalist Armand - is this because he is playing a servant? Is Armand sharing Louis’ grief (another clue to Merrick era perhaps)? Armand embraces modernity, but to me, there’s something amiss. I hope next season we’ll know more.
