The Beauty of Blackness 

This afternoon I sat down in front of the tele expecting to continue my rerun binge of one of my favorite HBO series “Insecure”. As I scrolled through the HBO demand catalog, my heart stopped when I saw the title “The Beauty of Blackness”. I didn’t hesitate for even a second to press play, and I’m so grateful I didn’t. The next thing that popped on the screen were beautiful images of vintage (1965-1985) runway shows, and y’all know I love me a good runway show. So as I sipped my peppermint tea keeping my right hand busy, and my faithful canines fur surfing through every finger of my left I began to become entrapped.

The Beauty of Blackness follows the ongoing success of the stellar and empowering cosmetic company Fashion Fair. The documentary traces back to the birth of prevalent MAINSTREAM black regality. This film covers the importance and appreciation of magnificent innovators of black beauty such as Jet Magazine, Ebony Magazine, Sephora, Fashion fair, Johnson publishing, Eunice Johnson, Reggie Wells, Kelly Rowland, Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty, and more.

What caught my attention to me the most was when the beauty director of Cosmopolitan Magazine Julee Wilson mentioned something that repowered me to continue styling and creating skincare products for people like me who look like me. She mentioned the importance of your “why”. Why are you doing what you’re doing, who is it reaching, why do THEY care, why do YOU care? When she spoke this the hairs on my arm went up faster than my hands when I get stopped by twelve. It reminded me that people who have dark skin, indifference, creativity, people who are cool and genuine, people who have been outcasted, bullied, teased, or all of the above encompass and galvanize my “why” and I won’t stop until I create something that kills any bit of fear or doubt that we may have or may encounter in the future.

         The Beauty of Blackness

    In 1973, Eunice Johnson, the founder of Ebony and Jet, noticed a problem: Black women had to mix their own foundation in order to find a color that matched their skin. To address this problem, Johnson launched Fashion Fair, the first national cosmetics company that focused entirely on Black women. The brand triggered a renaissance in style among Black women and the global cosmetics industry took notice. Now, Fashion Fair is staging its comeback as a Black-owned business in a new era defined by massive cultural shifts and increased competition. This film follows current Fashion Fair CEO Desiree Rogers and President Cheryl Mayberry McKissack as they chart a path as Black women entrepreneurs at the helm of a revived, iconic brand.

The documentary is directed by Tiffany Johnson and Kiana Moore. It stars Kelly Rowland, Lucinda Adeniran, Celessa Baker, Bia Barnett and more.

Rowland spoke during a recent media call attended by Red Carpet View:  “Black beauties support The Beauty of Blackness,” she said.  “It’s really important for us to show up for each other. We should all be supporting each other. There is room for all of us and there are so many brands. Support all Black cosmetic companies. Fashion Fair has returned as a powerhouse represented by Black women, let’s go out and support!”

The Beauty of Blackness is now available on HBO and HBO Max streaming.

Skin disorder called lichen planus, in which there are patches on the skin that appear as flat-topped, shiny, almost violet itchy areas.
