Thanks to some incredible supporters I was able to purchase new lighting for fatphotoref!
That means that there are new photos going up on the site every Monday from now through September. If you don’t want to wait that long to see them all, I’ve added an option to buy the full set from my last shoot on my ko-fi page.
Here’s a direct link to purchase the mega-pack, but no pressure whatsoever. https://ko-fi.com/s/7d8ba786c4

An assortment of the sfw art practice I've done in the last couple weeks. I'm not happy with all of the finished pieces, but I'm glad I spent the time on them because practice is practice.

I wish theres more beautiful lingerie available for larger sizes. I was happy to utilize an “acrylic” brush for this piece :)

do you have any tops for finding good plus size references…i keep trying to google shit (with “” as well) and all i get is dehydrated gym rats 🫠
fatphotoref and nsfw selfie subreddits dedicated to the body type you're looking for (fr example there are a couple for "Big Handsome Men" and "Chubby Guys") are what have helped me, as well as keeping an eye out for SWers on twitter ^_^ morpho's book on fat bodies is also easy to find a pdf of and will help lots alongside dis!

This is the anon that sent the ask about drawing fat characters and I wanted to say I really appreciate the effort you put into your response and I think it's very thoughtful and kind.
I want to clarify that I never intended to imply that you were expected to attack or be mean to people who draw these characters thin, because I totally understand as a fat artist myself that not only are resources for this kind of thing sparse, but also a lot of spaces are very hostile towards people new to learning these kinds of body types. Genuinely, I do not advocate for or expect malice towards artists who havent been given the opportunity to learn this sort of stuff.
My frustration in the first place was that I had misunderstood you reblogging the art as uncritical support for what is often fatphobic bias in drawing characters like this, but I understand now that you are trying to provide a good space for these people to learn and have these bodies normalized in art, and not that you dont care whether someone draws a fat character thinner than they really are.
Ultimately, I'd like to apologize for my ask. I'm so used to people in online spaces drawing characters thinner due to bias that in my impulsive frustrated response I forgot to consider the people who are still learning and need support and encouragement instead of malice, so to you and anyone who felt hurt by my ask, I'm really sorry.
I hope your day is going well, and to anyone seeking fat art resources, @bromantically has a link to several fat art tutorials and a link to a (free) Morpho book file with extensive information on how to draw fat bodies. There's also a site called fatphotoref and they also have a discord server, but you will have to ask someone for the password to the site in order to access it
Tumblr media
Yeah I'm glad my reply came across well! And thank you for sending in another ask and thanks for the resources! It's going to be a great help and I'll make sure to check them out myself when I have time.

hey!!! I love your art, was wondering if you have any recommendations for practicing anatomy? the way you draw people is so nice and your poses look so dynamic and fluid it’s rly impressive
hey hey! so my currently knowledge of anatomy is because i’ve been taking figure drawing classes, and really fucking loving them. While i know that an actual college level figure class isn’t super accesible, it’s still worth it to see if there are any figure drawing groups around your area. Lots of places do them for a small flat fee, or maybe even free, depending where you look. BUT, if that’s really not an option, having a friend pose for you or people sketching at a park is pretty good too! Drawing the figure consistantly and from real life is the best way to improve, and i saw myself making leaps and bounds after just a few weeks of starting this kind of practice. On days that you cannot get anyone to sit for you- websites like line of action and fatphotoref are full of images created for the purpose of figure study. I like to a lot of these in pen or marker, and just plot out points in relation to eachother, and give myself like ~ 5 minutes to get stuff down. I find it helps me from getting too fixed on one place. (this is one i did over the summer, its not perfect, but its a good example of one i did off of photos) im pretty sure people make figure drawing videos too? but i’ve never tried them.
Tumblr media
I offen hear people give advice on anatomy like ‘breaking the form down into shapes’ and i… personally discoruage that exactly. Not that the form can’t be broken down, it’s just that people tend to take that and run with it, and the shapes become waaaay more simplified than intended. Parts of the body are rarely tubes or circles or squares, and for me, breaking down the body may be breaking the leg into hundreds of parts rather than the standard two or three.
I suppose the main thing i tend to really focus on is making sure your characters feel weighted. Bodies carry a lot of muscle and fat, and if a person does not feel firmly rooted to the ground, the whole figure can feel thrown off.
Im not always sure what else tips i can give besides keeping a regular sketchbook practice, drawing who are around you whenever you can, and just observing your model or reference closely, working general to specific on details

i don’t mean this in a rude way at all, whatsoever, but do you have any advice for those who are genuinely interested in drawing fat people? any youtube videos or sites or any books? i’m trying to be more diverse with body types but i don’t want to draw fat people in an offensive or incorrect way.
i'd definitely reccomend the morpho book on fat and folds!!!
aside from that, just try to include more of a range of people in whatever kind of drawing practice you usually do. life drawing etc - there are lots of folks out there offering free resources already like fatphotoref on twitter, senshistock on DA (i think they're adorkastock now? but they have a few models including some fat folks) pinterest, as always, has lots of refs too.
to be honest, when you're working in good faith it's kinda hard to draw fat folks wrong, since we are extremely diverse in shape and size. it's more about the contexts you put us in, try to be normal about those. fat people are everywhere and do everything that thin people do.

Salloween Day 15: Detective.
Todd may not be an actual detective, but he's way better at it than any of the 'real' ones. Drawn with the help of fatphotoref.
