Tonight I'm rooting for Viggo Mortensen. I think all the Best Actor nominees are deserving but in Captain Fantastic, Mortensen showed me a performance I've never seen anyone give before. And I have a theory that Casey Affleck and Denzel Washington are going to split the vote and Mortensen will win a la Adrien Brody in 2003. I've read the Anon Oscar voter stuff and heard what voters said at parties: people have stated they voted for him. We'll see what happens. There were some amazing performances this year (and there are still a few I have not had the chance to see yet). The best performances are singular characters, in stories that challenge us on every possible level. If I had to boil it down to my five favorites, I would say Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”), Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”), Wil Wheaton (“Rent-A-Pal”), Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) and Delroy Lindo (“Da 5 Bloods”), but every performance pictured here is worth a watch. When your favorite performance of the year is getting a lot of love, it makes you feel good. When it’s from one of your favorite actors, it makes you reflect on your relationship with their work over the years. Nicolas Cage’s work in “Pig” feels like one of those late-career summations of an actor’s career, but the truth is, Cage is one of those performers who will always be around until he passes on, and the performances like “Pig” (or “Adaptation.,” or “The Weather Man,” or “Bringing Out the Dead,” or “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call, New Orleans,” or “Wild at Heart,” or “Face/Off,” or “Kiss of Death”) won’t always be the rule for him, but as exceptions?
