Dangerous Romance Ep 4 Stray Thoughts

Last week, we mostly skipped dealing with the internal fallout of Sailom experiencing extreme violence from his creditors, or seeing how he and his brother are coping, to jump to the Kanghan tutoring arc. We’ve confirmed that Kanghan has massive issues because his dad has undermined his confidence constantly by never expecting anything from him. The boys practiced their English at a tourist spot, and got chased down (for gross sex reasons) by some foreigners who were after Sailom. Kanghan thought it would be brilliant if the hid in an alley and kissed. Also, Kanghan’s friends don’t seem to know him or his interests that well. However, Sailom is going to Courage Wolf this man into believing in himself.

It's been a tough Night Hunt, or so Nie Huaisang is told. He is very glad that he wasn't invited for that one, due to it taking place a little too close to the Wens' territory. His brother's paranoia about Qishan Wen has its good sides when it can get him out of doing anything boring.

But Nie Huaisang is glad as well that Nie Mingjue wasn't alone for this. He can be reckless, but less so when Lan Xichen is with him because he feels responsible for his friend. Nie Huaisang suspects it's some sort of big brother instinct. Or else, it's just the effect Lan Xichen has on people. He is so kind and gentle, anyone would want to protect him.

Not that he needs protecting. For all his beauty and elegance, Lan Xichen is fearsome in a fight. He is a swordsman beyond compare, the best archer of their generation, and has amazing mastery of his sect’s musical techniques. It’s no wonder that, out of all the people he’s met, Nie Mingjue chose that person to become his only true friend.

But Lan Xichen isn’t just a powerful fighter. At the moment, he is playing the xiao to help Nie Mingjue calm down after something during the Night Hunt gave his temper a rise. Nie Huaisang invited himself in spite of his brother’s protests, because he would never miss a chance to listen to Lan Xichen playing. It’s fine anyway, he’s good at making himself invisible, and already Nie Mingjue seems to have forgotten there’s a third person in his room… though that might be due to Lan Xichen’s music more than Nie Huaisang’s skill.

It is not just that the melody is imbued with spiritual energies, Nie Huaisang believes. He’s had the chance to hear other Lans play, and they never have quite the same calming effect as Lan Xichen does. It must be that the personality of the musician matters as well, and in spite of his youth, there is not a person in the world more poised and sincerely peaceful.

It’s a dichotomy that always puzzles Nie Huaisang. He could understand someone with a quiet personality, he’s met a few here and there. And he has also met his share of powerful fighters, an unfortunate side effect of being born within Qinghe Nie. But Lan Xichen is the only person he knows that can be both at once, and it fascinates him.

That’s the reason he thinks so much about Lan Xichen, he figures. It’s just good old fascination, tinted with a healthy dose of admiration. That’s why he can’t stop looking at the other boy whenever he visits, why his eyes are glued to his lips and fingers right now, watching him play with inhuman skill, as if he were hundreds of years old rather than almost the same age as Nie Huaisang. If he watches him so much, it is to understand how a body so slender and graceful can hide the strength to destroy any number of evil creatures in a single blow. If his heart beats so fast every time Lan Xichen looks at him or better yet speaks to him, it’s only the normal reaction to being acknowledged by someone so superior to him in every way.

When the melody dies down, Nie Huaisang can’t help clapping a little. It was so beautifully played that he has to. Nie Mingjue rolls his eyes, but Lan Xichen smiles at him, looking genuinely pleased that his performance was so well received.

He has the most beautiful smile Nie Huaisang has ever seen on anyone. It is a blessing onto the world that he is so generous with it, smiling almost constantly. Seeing that smile now, Nie Huaisang almost wants to…

“You’ve had your fun, Huaisang, now scram,” Nie Mingjue grunts, sounding far more relaxed than before the song. “We have serious business to discuss.”

“Are you going to talk about the Wens again?” Nie Huaisang pouts, a little relieved to be saved from the shameful thought he nearly had. “How boring. Can’t Young Master Lan play another song first? That’d be more fun! You need to have fun sometimes, Da-Ge.”

“And you need to stop thinking only of your own entertainment,” his brother snaps. “Go away, I said!”

“Boring,” Nie Huaisang insists, getting up from his corner of the room. He bows quickly to Lan Xichen. “Thank you for playing for us. I am very grateful to you for taking such good care of Da-Ge, even if he’s the most boring person in the world.”

His brother glares at him, but to his surprise and utter delight Lan Xichen laughs gently and his smile turns impossibly warmer. He is gorgeous like this, amused and happy, and Nie Huaisang is looking at his lips and…

“I am glad Second Master Nie thinks so much of my skill,” Lan Xichen says, sounding more sincere than Nie Huaisang’s silly comments deserve. “If I have time later, I can try to play for you again, if you would like. For now though, I fear your brother is right and we must get to business. Unless you would like to stay and discuss these problems with us? You might be able to provide some interesting insights.”

From anyone else, saying something like that would come as mocking. Everyone knows that Nie Huaisang, while not exactly stupid, is so lazy that in a way it’d be better if he were stupid. But Lan Xichen sounds like he might genuinely value whatever Nie Huaisang could say, and for the first time in his life, Nie Huaisang finds himself tempted to pay attention to politics, just so he won’t disappoint the older boy.

Thankfully, Nie Mingjue comes to his rescue.

“He’ll just be a nuisance if he stays,” his brother grumbles. “Huaisang, leave us alone. How long has it been since you last touched your sabre? Go practice for a while, and stop bothering us.”

Normally Nie Huaisang would protest. Yet for the first time in his life, sabre practice feels like a safe and pleasant option, so he quickly bids the other two goodbye and runs off to the training grounds.

He hates exercise, and he hates getting sweaty and tired, but the more he sees Lan Xichen’s kind smile, the more he thinks how much that mouth looks made for kissing and that’s not a train of thought he wants to face at the moment.

What the **** did my brother mean ‘all tied up and ready for collection’? I had a very bad feeling and got that nauseous sensation in my stomach.

At that moment my brother came back into the room and was followed by two other guys looking pretty much the same as my brother, and both were smoking. I wasn’t too impressed the house was going to stink. Little did I know that at that time that was the least of my worries.

“This is Stevo and this is my boyfriend Chopper.” At which point Stevo dropped his cigarette on the carpet and stomped on it with one of his boots to put it out. The two of them started snogging.

The fella my brother introduced as Stevo told the other two to ‘get a room’. Needless to say my brother led his boyfriend into one of the bedrooms. Meanwhile Steve pulled up a char and looked me in the eyes.

“Right then. Let’s do proper introductions, I’m Stevo, and you are?”

“MMMMMMichael”, I stuttered my response.

“Mick it is then. Your brother has settled in nicely with his new family. And I mean really settled in”. He said with a big smile, and listening to the noise coming from elsewhere in the house I knew what he meant. “You see when your brother became part of the crew, it means that any immediate relatives also become part of the crew. So when he told us that he had an older brother, we needed to make plans to ‘bring you into the fold’, so to speak. And here we are. Not only that, but when he showed me your picture, i knew I had to have you....and I will...once you’re fully inducted into the crew that is.” 

Stevo got up, came over to me an offered me a cigarette. i shook my head. “That’ll be the last time you refuse a ciggy lad. Right while your brother’s otherwise engaged, I’ll bring in the other lads and we can get started.” and with that Stevo got up and walked back into the hall.

What the hell did he mean get started? I heard the front door slam shut. Alone again, all I could hear were the noises my brother and his boyfriend were making.

When did Zhou Zishu fall in love?

Inspired by this post about Qian Qiu's Shen Qiao – but especially by how different Zhou Zishu's situation is, when you begin looking into it 😄

What I need to address first is that Zhou Zishu, as a character and especially as a narrator, tends to not dwell on, or even downplay, his feelings. It is partially a coping strategy, but also seems to be just a general facet of his personality. One of the joys of close-reading TYK is finding moments of unreliable narration on his part – where his actual reactions don't match up to his words and even thoughts, or where his opinions are clearly colored by preexisting bias, or where he is overreacting to things that are genuinely innocuous… so, the short answer to the question of when he fell for Wen Kexing? 

Much earlier than he'd have you think. 

So, let’s start with a moment – fairly late into the novel – where Zhou Zishu fully, actively, physically reciprocates Wen Kexing’s advances: the kiss in chapter 56. It is actually a third kiss Wen Kexing initiates, but the first to which Zhou Zishu responds – and from the way the previous two were presented in narration, you’d think Zishu was forced, except...

...wait. Zishu, my dude, my guy, that was your problem? That you weren’t on even ground?

Like, let’s check back with chapter 17, this is Zishu’s reaction:

[...] Zhou Zishu broke away from Wen Kexing’s grip, ruthlessly delivering a punch to the other’s abdomen, his expression cold. “The joke is not funny, Brother Wen.”

– and 40 goddamn chapters later we learn that what he was actually mad about was not being able to ‘react in time’? 

And I mean, sure, it was pretty obvious he wasn’t that upset about the kissing back when it happened – considering he could’ve disappeared into the sunset and never see Wen Kexing again but instead continued to travel with him – but the way he thinks about it in 56 really makes it sound like he wanted to answer in kind… but all right, let’s not jump to conclusions that fast.

How about… the moment Zhou Zishu first verbally acknowledged his willingness to stay with Wen Kexing? Chapter 51:

Those ‘few days’, by the way, last literal months. Idk, fellas, is it gay to spend the whole winter living together with your “jianghu friend”, all while sharing a bed and raising a kid together..?

But then again, is it such a wonder that Zhou Zishu is willing to fall into that domestic routine when his first thought when an old acquaintance mentions marriage is...

And let’s not forget that his reaction to the above line was:

Too bad that Wen Kexing took that silence the wrong way and played it off as a joke, huh? Because whatever else, this wasn’t the reaction of a man about to say a definite ‘no’.

Let’s take a moment to allow this to sink in: by chapter 33, someone was already willing to consider what is essentially a marriage proposal.

Getting closer to that kiss back in chapter 17, aren’t we? The theory that Zhou Zishu’s problem was not with the kiss itself is beginning to look less implausible. Actually, there’s a moment when Zishu is reminded of it in chapter 19, and...

[Wen Kexing] specifically wiped his mouth after that, licking at the corner of his lips as if remembering something. Zhou Zishu stared at him in a daze, mindlessly holding a cup to his mouth to pretend drinking, but after a good while of no liquid flowing out, he finally noticed that the cup was actually empty.

– I think we can all agree that this is not a reaction of someone remembering an upsetting event.

(Also, if I had a dollar for every time Zhou Zishu attempted to drink from an empty cup when flustered by Wen Kexing’s actions, I’d have 2 dollars. Which isn’t a lot but it’s hilarious that it happened twice.)

And just before that, in chapter 18, we also have a moment when Wen Kexing unglues himself from Zhou Zishu’s side for a bit, and Zhou Zishu immediately both misses him – 

During the past days, Zhou Zishu had to listen to [big sects’ representatives] until his ears couldn’t bear it anymore. But when he was bored out of his mind, Wen Kexing was nowhere to be seen. It was a bit quiet without the other man’s rowdiness.

– and… well... begins composing cutting remarks about Wen Kexing’s fickleness in his mind:

Internally, he thought Wen Kexing was only mindlessly chasing after him. With the lack of those courtesans with their pretty handkerchiefs, beggars couldn’t be choosers; that was obviously why the man glued himself to him to ramble his ears off.

Actually, there’s something else in this last fragment: you see, Zhou Zishu seems to have a bit of a lasting resentment about them handkerchiefs…

“[...] And regardless of all those handkerchiefs you have, stop with that motor mouth that’s full of gibberish.” (chapter 22)

What’s that about? Well, it all started back in chapter 13. Wen Kexing used a certain embroidered handkerchief to clean out Zishu’s wound, and when Zhou Zishu thought to tease him about “carrying a maiden’s belongings”...

“This is a personal gift from the famous courtesan and gentleman Su Yue from Yang Zhou City, you shouldn’t have asked if you don’t want to make an ignorant fool of yourself.”

So, this is the handkerchief Zhou Zishu will think back to with bitterness. Which... sure is a higher amount of jealousy than one would expect from a guy who literally punched that man for kissing him?

I’m sure by now we’re all on the same page: ‘that early?’ Yep, Zhou Zishu had been showing signs of liking Wen Kexing much more than he lets on that early. Then, what exactly all of that resistance was about?

Well, two reasons: first, Zhou Zishu wasn’t certain about how much Wen Kexing actually likes him (Zishu and trust is… a whole topic), and was worried about investing too much of his own sincerity into something that might not be real – which was probably compounded by the fact that, even trying to hold himself off, he still found himself liking Wen Kexing more and more (remember the reaction to proposal?). And second, of course, that he was rapidly nearing his death – it is no coincidence that he only directly asks about Wen Kexing’s sincerity after knowing he has a chance to survive.

So, yeah – it is not that Zishu takes a long time to warm up to Wen Kexing, it is rather that he is trying to protect his own heart… and Wen Kexing’s too, in a way.
