Japanese QL Corner

We are up to seven live airing QLs from Japan! Five of these are on Gaga and two are being generously provided via fansubs.

A brief interlude for me to climb on my soapbox: if you are a fan of Japanese queer media who is not based in Japan, you really should be supporting GagaOOLala. They are the sole international distributor of most of these shows and the only reason international fans can watch them as they release. They’re a queer-owned Taiwanese company specifically focused on providing international access to global queer media, and their monthly subscription is much cheaper than other streaming services. They’re not perfect but they are quite responsive to feedback about their catalogue and approach; please consider subscribing if you love these shows!

I’m really loving most of these shows and I highly recommend jumping in to the weekly watch!

Takara's Treasure

I fall more in love with these two every week. We finally got some answers on Takara's backstory, and as expected, it is the mother who abandoned him that has been harassing him. Taishin blazed in to give that lady a piece of his mind before even realizing who she was, and it only made Takara love him more. The revelation that Takara is holding back with Taishin because he doesn't want to be covetous like his mother sent me into a bit of a tailspin. I loved Taishin getting his moment to reciprocate Takara's care, as well as Takara's amusement that Taishin still hasn't pieced together what they are to each other. I'm excited for it to finally click for him soon.

Sugar Dog Life

I'll be honest, this first episode did not hit right for me. I always struggle with copaganda heavy romances, especially when the show is intentionally framing cops as benevolent and explicitly linking that to the romantic arc. But I liked the cooking parts of it a lot! We'll see how it proceeds. This one is being fan subbed, so if anyone is having trouble finding it feel free to hit me up in DMs and I'll point you.

Cosmetic Playlover

This one is coming in hot with two episodes a week, because Japan is trying to kill me. I like the concept and vibe but the execution is a bit all over the place; it feels like they want this to be a dark story but aren’t willing to fully commit to that, so dark things happen but then get treated too lightly. The pacing also feels a little wacky and we’re rushing through plot and relationship development in a way that leaves it all feeling a bit ungrounded. Sahashi went from harassing and threatening to out Natsume to kissing and claiming to be serious about him in the space of 15 minutes, and then suddenly in the next ep there’s a new villain and suspense plot. This one is just not clicking; I’m tilting my head with a furrowed brow.

I Hear the Sunspot

Sigh. I really didn’t need another arc about a third party interloper coming between the boys, but here we are. Maya is a throwback to the bad old femme fatale archetype steeped in misogyny and I don’t love it. She’s arrogant, manipulative, and mean for no good reason, and she doesn’t feel like she fits in this story about decent people trying their best. There was a way to do this plot with a more sympathetic portrayal of her, but unfortunately they didn't take that route. I’m disappointed that she’s with us for multiple episodes, and it’s hard to believe this rude little girl can really come between them. I said last week that it felt like they regressed Kohei and Taichi’s relationship in the time skip and I’m feeling that even more now. Aside from this mess, I really liked all of Taichi’s scenes with his friends this week as he continues trying to work out his feelings for Kohei. I hope we get back to Taichi and Kohei spending time together again soon; that’s the real heart of this show and I already miss it.

Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko

Sigh. Last week I was mad at the characters around Hiroko, but this week I am forced to be mad at the show for how it's dealing with this entire plot involving Hiroko's decisions about her privacy at work, Risa's inappropriate interference, and Ayaka's bizarre conclusion that she should announce her love for Hiroko to the whole office. This whole love triangle and forced outing plot was ill-considered and it's dragging the show down; we should not have had Risa being so wrong and manipulative or ventured into queer workplace politics at all if the show wasn't prepared to take it seriously. On the plus side, we finally got the backstory for Hiroko, and it was surprising in a good way. I hope this show can get back to the zany comedy it was doing so well before it got bogged down in all this mess.

Mr. Mitsuya's Planned Feeding

Episode 3 just went up on @isaksbestpillow's blog, and it's a fantastic one. I was howling watching Mitsuya wailing on his ex and poor Ishida trying to process this new rival on the scene. Shige continues to be the MVP and I loved the way he encouraged Ishida with a mix of sage advice and sexy sass (also loved that Mitsyua immediately knew that gossip ratted him out). And I screamed again when Ishida got worked up and confessed; I didn't expect that to happen so fast and it was excellent! This show feels so mature in the best way; I really feel like I'm watching adults who have lived.

As far as the fic goes, he’s the most extreme version of Azul next to clingy, codependent boyfriend Azul. ^^;;; camboy Azul goes to very criminal lengths for his darling. In the fic, he dresses in a lot of frills and pastels for his streams, and he uses a specific cosmetics brand he’s very fond of, which shows up quite often and is aptly named Sugar Sweetheart (also the name of the fic hehe). I like to imagine this is an Azul in his hot pink femme fatale era. <3

Outside of camming, he's a waiter at a five-star restaurant. Sadly, this Azul isn’t as successful as other Azuls discussed on the blog. >_< his dreams of opening his own restaurant were somewhat compromised when he weighed what he wanted career-wise versus what he wanted relationship-wise (with darling), and he made some foolish time investments. So now he works at a restaurant and stews in hatred every shift because this is what he wanted, and he doesn't have it! >:(

Elusive Finnish billionaire Eerik Holmen might be the most secretive person on the planet. Operating exclusively from a chain of remote islands, owned by shell companies, you'd need to call in thirty favors just to find someone who knows someone who knows rumors about the possible location of one of them. And don't even think about trying to get an invitation to his revered annual masquerade ball - an event with tighter security than a presidental inauguration. 

Good thing I don't need one.

Thirty favors are not an easy thing to accumulate so I'm careful. The guests are just beginning to arrive, so the security does not pay that much attention to the skies, and before anyone knows it, camouflage glider retracted into my catsuit, I'm making my way through halls of invisible lasers, conveniently glitching cameras and an actual pit trap. Don't knock it if you haven't tried it. Great cardio. And while you're at it, you'd be wise to install remotely activated bombs in the walls. It might help later.

One thing spy movies don't get right? You know that part where the protagonist lifts the diamond and quickly manages to put something of a similar weight in its place as to avoid activating the alarm? Yeah, that doesn't happen. The truth is, there's no way to avoid the alarm. You just gotta avoid the walls of the trap room it's inevitably placed in that shoot out to crush you in under 0.3 seconds. Good thing I don't go out without my trusty titanium grappling hook. And now, of course, the alarm is blaring and the whole shithole is going into lockdown. So, I run. I don't go far, there's armed security everywhere. Of course, the guns mean nothing if you get the jump on them. You don't need to deal with them all, obviously, but you do need to get to a safe room where you apply your cosmetic modifications, transform your catsuit into a short black dress, and slip inside the panicking crowd. These rich people value their lives a lot for some reason.

The diamond is not on my person, obviously. Hidden in plain sight, the many trackers on it can discern its general location but they have no clue on which floor it is and no one expects it to be in the majestic indoor fountain boasting a statue of Poseidon in the middle. My earring begins beeping, indicating my ride is here. Final part of the plan. Not even after three beeps, a series of explosions shakes up the building and smoke and ashes fill the room. Panic, screams, hell, even a gunshot rings out but that's of no importance. The fountain water has already disabled half of the trackers on the diamond but no signal can get to the contents of the handbag in my hand, lined on the inside with pure silver. The screams of the guests and the further explosions make it very easy for me to slip out of a newly made hole in the wall. Jungle ain't fun to run through but the second I'm in the ocean, I've made it. Now to find the camouflaged submarine that has been waiting here for four months.

Do you prefer the twilight graphic novel looks or the movie looks?

Graphic novel, hands down.

The movies looked fake. And as well they should--trying to capture the ethereal perfection SM was trying to describe in her books is hard. And they made some odd casting choices, like Nikki Reed for Rosalie. Don't get me wrong, I love Nikki Reed. But turning a Jewish/Italian woman into Stephenie Meyer's racist perfection of pure whiteness required a level of makeup and wigging that took an absolutely stunning woman and turned her into a caricature. This happened to a lesser extent with Jackson Rathbone and Peter Facinelli as well. They also had to contend with the fact that the actors aged 4 years over the course of shooting, which led to even more makeup and in some cases some obvious cosmetic procedures that made them look even *less* like immortals.

In the graphic novels, the characters can be drawn exactly as described. There are no constraints. Edward looks seventeen. Carlisle has that weird demeanor so many young men reach where depending on how they act and dress they are easily believable as a range of almost 15 years in age. Rosalie is just pure femme fatale. Alice actually looks like someone whose hair is growing out from having been shaved for lice. They are just so much more believable in the GNs than in the movies, in my opinion. I mourn for Young Kim and hope she's become well, and in her absence, I really wish the franchise would just hurry up and hire @kellythepitiablefangirl already, whose style is slightly different but is close enough. Her drawing of Edward makes him look more innocent and young and fragile and I am simultaneously uncomfortable with it and entirely here for it.
