Mod opinion: I haven't read this book yet, but it sounds like a cute trans romance.

Book Review: Can I Crossdress My Way Out of This Arranged Marriage?

Thank you, Tumblr, for recommending this stupendous trans novella to me.

The plot is kinda obvious just from the title (very efficient): a young man has a marriage arranged for him, decides to pretend to be a girl to get out of the marriage, and eventually realises she’s a girl after all. It is told with passionate charm, and is so easy to read. It’s just the right length.

On the surface, it might seem tropey & contrived, but the typical “trans awakening” tropes are mixed in with D&D-style fantasy tropes, which adds an interesting layer of nuance: there’s culture shock, there’s angst about people aging differently (Elves vs. Humans vs. Orcs, etc.), and these all funnel into the ways the protagonist is already isolated & lonely.

After reading some serious & intense books, this was just the exact fluffy read I needed. I have to check out more of Bedek’s books!

In the distant future, nanotech allows for rather more interesting medical transitions than we have today. Maraĵa's not only helped with her gender dysphoria, but also having turned her into a shark girl, as part of a deal with the resort she works for.

Her simple and nerdy life is turned sideways when the resort becomes the home of a politician in exile. Not from the politician, but from one of his tall and muscular bodyguards that gets poor Maraĵa's lesbian heart a fluttering.

Only there's more to the bodyguard than there seems at first.

The hubris comes back to bite him during a vacation to the Aegean coast, however. A run in with a cursed spring leaves Romeo suddenly rather more feminine in appearance and the focus on some divine interest. Will he learn some humility? Grow as a person? Or, at least, think about gender a bit?
