Aaaand here it is. The main plotline became a quick trip to the nearest temple.
Well played, the Sorcerer wins this discussion.

Favorite movie from 01?
[Give me a year and I'll give you my favourite films / recommendations]
Tumblr media
Perhaps "favourite" isn't the best word, perhaps the best word is "biggest obsession", but I have to go with Mulholland Drive. David Lynch is a very special case, you're either into him or you ain't, and arguments either way are of little use. I just want to note 2 things, about Lynch in general and Mulholland in particular:
Contrary to all appearances, it actually makes sense. It may be a weird sense, a dream sense (literally a dream, for like half of this movie), but it's not random.
It doesn't need to make sense to you to be enjoyable. It's perfectly cool to treat it like a trip, and just get lost in the highway sauce. You can revisit it later, and think about it and look up what others have made of it, but it's optional.
Now, these 4 are my favourite 2001 films:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spirited Away needs no introduction, it's widely thought as the best Ghibli film, and I love it to bits.
I'm a complete sucker for Moulin Rouge! and for truth! beauty! freedom! love!, and will accept no criticism at this time.
El espinazo del diablo (The Devil's Backbone) is early Guillermo del Toro, and a sort of prelude to Pan's Labyrinth: it's horror, it's set during the Spanish Civil War, and it takes a stance, along with its own supernatural elements.
And I simply adore Hedwig and the Angry Inch (second musical lol). Does that need an introduction, on 2024 tumblr?
Also of interest:

Monster's Ball is the best from the rest, an incredible drama with Halle Berry's best performance. Very disturbing from start to finish. "Billy Bob Thornton plays a prison guard who begins a relationship with a woman (Halle Berry), unaware that she is the widow of a man (Sean Combs) he assisted in executing."
Ocean's Eleven is the fully on-brand film, it pretty much defined what modern American heist films should be like. No small feat!
Das Experiment: so the Stanford experiment inspired some notoriously bad takes, not least by Zimbardo himself. It also inspired this amazing film. Please don't bother with the pointless American remake. (I owe tumblr a serious post about the Stanford experiment btw, but this is not the place.)
The Brotherhood of the Wolf is surely the wackiest AND darkest action / horror / period / swashbukcling / wuxia / monster film out there. We're in 18th century France, there's the legendary beast of Gévaudan, and cults, and spies, and all of the above.
Il mestiere delle armi (The Profession of Arms) is a shoutout to @wearemercs, it's a realistic war film with landsknechts and condottieri in 16th century Italy, we don't see that every day.
@feyariel I remember that Metropolis was wonderful and I loved it, but not much else about it. Sorry, it's been a while and I have shit for memory!

Monsters, Inc.: not best Pixar, but good Pixar
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: can't leave this one out!
The Man Who Wasn't There: excellent neo-noir by the Cohens
Gosford Park: a whodunit set at an English country house, and the polar opposite of Downton Abbey (which goes at great lengths to convince us that masters deserve their servants' loyalty), ironically written by the same person
Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain (Amélie): here begin the films that were adored back then, especially by the artsy/festival crowd, but I haven't seen them since and I've no idea how they've aged
Ghost World: based on the comic book by Daniel Clowes
Waking Life: Linklater, philosophy, rotoscope, Ethan Hawke's there, oh my!
Y tu mamá también: Alfonso Cuarón, road trips, sex, young Diego Luna, young Gael García Bernal, oh my!
Ichi the Killer: by Takashi Miike, based on Hideo Yamamoto's manga. do not watch this if you're not completely sure you wanna watch this lol

Stealthily, Azcyrrimeowndifelixasimilian creeps up behind Kaze and plants a pretty pink bow on the gun mage's head!
I was totally coerced into drawing magical girl (kinda) Kaze, RIP. Am I doing it right? I don't even watch magical girl anime
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"!!"
Alas, the cat was noticed too late. Something magical triggered the moment the hair bow touched him - it seems that Kaze's magical girl meter had finally been kicked over 100%.
Instead of only the Demon Gun undergoing a flashy transformation, pink sparkles suddenly whirled round and round his cloaked frame like the Soil Spiral itself. And - oh.. what is this!

What vidjagame is that Top Gear bit from? Skyrim?
Double checked, and yes, that is Skyrim.
Ashamed to say I know more about The Grand Tour (reluctantly using the name Amazon gave the new show after snatching the trio up) episode the source clip is from, if you want to see here. I cannot believe they were allowed to even touch this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiTzq1K8pPQ

In the subs for Destruction of the Round Table, they keep referring to Shiroe as "Geki of the East" and saying that "Geki" is some elevated title. I'm pretty sure the Wiki's "Scrivener of the East" is the translation, but I don't get how it's supposed to sound like some noble title. Is there more to it or is it just kinda stilted?
The term Geki (外記, definition on Japanese Wikipedia since there’s no English sources about this) essentially means “royal scrivener,” which is why it’s treated as an elevated title/noble title. That said, scribes and scriveners have traditionally been members of the royal court, which is probably why the English version of volume 5 (where Nureha prepares the title for Shiroe should he join her) didn’t include the “royal” part.

Dearest Monkalonk, I am thinking I’ma make a Monk for a 5e one-ish-shot, either Mark of Passage Human or Eladrin (for “jellyportation”). Does the Four Elements subclass count as having Spellcasting for the purposes of the extra Mark of Passage spells (and, if not, is there a Monk subclass that does have that)?
From context, I assume that mark of passage is a subrace or racial trait, and that it resembles a racial teleport power that double-elves have. It says under Four Elements monk that Casting Elemental Spells is spellcasting and you should look under the chapter on spellcasting, and all the abilities are things like hold person which is a spell, so, if I had to guess, I’d say it probably counts unless my understanding of whatever the hell jellyportation is is dead wrong. My answer is “probably but why are you asking me about 5e?”

I have just realized that @feyariel is the first person to have ever call me “Vaste”.
I’ve read “vasteblague” before, of course. I’ve been keeping the same url since my first days on here (since 2008, I believe?) but Vaste is new.
I’m just curious how you are pronouncing it? Vaste like the something large (which is the point of the url... since it’s from the French expression “Vaste Blague” aka “a Wide Joke”, a farce, something largely ridiculous?
Because I think more like “Vasté” would sound good too.
Anyway, I’m feeling like Simon Fairchild now XD

@feyariel 5e shortswords do piercing damage, and so do daggers. Daggers don’t get a bonus to Sleight of Hand checks for being concealed, but keep in mind that 5e skills are super hazy, and basically up to the DM. Very few skill uses have actual rules, and concealing weapons is not one of them. Well, the rule is it’s a Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check to conceal an object on your person. The DC is not specified.
The PHB tells DMs how to eyeball flat DCs according to their difficulty (from 5 for very easy to 30 for nearly impossible), and how to do contests in general (roll vs roll, or roll vs passive check – passive checks are the equivalent of 3E’s “take 10”). The DMG tells DMs to impose advantage or disadvantage whenever they feel that circumstances should make a roll easier or harder. It does not suggest flat modifiers (like “add +2 to your roll”).
So if you play 5e and say, “I want to conceal my dagger on my person”, you’d roll a Sleight of Hand check, but all the rest is up to the DM. They can rule that:
it’s a flat DC. Maybe 10 (easy) to hide a dagger and 15 (medium) to hide a shortsword, or maybe it’s the same DC, or other numbers, or who knows.
it’s a contested check, your Sleight of Hand vs onlookers’ Perception. Or their Investigation, if you’re getting frisked
it’s a contested check, your Sleight of Hand vs onlookers’ passive Perception or Investigation
and then add that
you roll with advantage because it’s just a dagger, not a big sword
you roll straight
you roll with disadvantage because it’s a whole weapon, not like a coin
Now that I think about it, it’s extremely unhelpful to new DMs, a fact I hadn’t fully grokked until now because I don’t play with new DMs. On the other hand, anyone who already has Opinions on how to run the game can simply implement them, without worrying it’ll clash with some other obscure rule down the line. Hmm.

Cuil Philosophers believe that as the study of Cuil advances, we'll approach an understanding that will show that the Cuil level of a situation is equivalent to the number of sets of limits of consciousness are being superimposed over the world as it really is.
For example, a 2 Cuil abstraction occurs when the world as it truly is informs a world of experience in conjunction with one set of consciousness constraints, and that the world of experience would then inform a second world of experience in conjunction with a second set of consciousness constraints.
