Being a fic reader is defending fic to people who don’t read it and saying things like “fanfic isn’t weird, it can be beautiful and well written and moving. It’s a way to connect more deeply with the media and it’s a great community.” Then going on ao3, reading the most unhinged, disgustingly out of pocket summary you’ve ever seen in your life paired with a set of tags that makes it very clear that the author should probably have a psychological evaluation and then sighing and reading the fic anyway.

Love that fic, but having trouble expressing that love in a comment? Worried that you're leaving the same comments over and over?
Here are 40 comment ideas!
Keyboard Smash. Bonus points for a mix of uppercase and lowercase. End with a brief compliment: "Love it!" "So good!" "Amazing!" "This is my everything!"
Emoji string. Go as long as you feel appropriate. Throw in some 🔥 for good measure.
Quote a phrase, sentence, or passage that resonated with you, and explain why. "I love this description." "This is such beautiful language." "This metaphor is so brilliant." "This is the perfect way to describe [character/thing]."
Ask the author what inspired them to write such an incredible story. (Most authors dream of these types of comments.)
Share how the fic made you feel as you read it. Were you scared for a character? Were you cheering on your favorite? Did that smut make you all hot and bothered?
Thank the author. Bonus if you can thank them for something specific: Sharing this amazing work, introducing this awesome character, creating this cool AU, etc.
Identify your favorite character in the fic, and explain why they're your favorite.
Any indication that you're so in love with a work you literally want to eat it. My personal favorite that I've received is "I want to shove this in my mouth like an entire oreo," but "I want to print this out and stuff it in my face" and "This fic is like an amazing five-course meal, every bite is delicious!" are also winners.
For a multi-chapter fic, any version of "Wow, this keeps getting better and better!" This can really help keep an author motivated, especially if they've been focused on one longfic for a while. Longfics tend to have diminishing engagement over time, so commenting on later chapters is especially meaningful.
Tell the author that something in their fic is your "emotional support [thing]." Bob is my emotional support character, this is my emotional support fic, etc.
Tag it as if it were a social post, with all the hashtags it makes you think of. #myfavoritefic #incrediblewriting #truelove
Did you do something maybe a little dumb while reading the fic? Stay up all night reading? Nearly walk into a wall because you were reading while walking? Show up late to class because you couldn't put it down? Share your dumb thing!
Make predictions on what you think will happen next, and explain why. End your comment with something along the lines of "I can't wait to find out if I'm right or wrong!" Note: Be sure to phrase your comment as to what you predict will happen, not what you think SHOULD happen.
Did the fic make you discover a new side or facet to a character? Talk about that. "I never noticed how [trait] [character] is until I read your work!" Example: "I never noticed how creative Eric was until you brought it out in this fic, but it's absolutely true!"
Have you re-read a work (especially multiple times)? "I'm re-reading this for the third time because I love it so much."
"This is my second kudos!" Repeat as many times as you want. Third, fourth, fortieth, it's all good.
Are you a new subscriber? "Loved this so much that I subscribed!"
Are you an existing subscriber? "Every time I see an update in my inbox, I get so excited and rush to read it!"
Is there an Original Character (OC) in the fic? Ask about the OC! Ask what inspired the author to create the OC. Ask for more information about the OC's background. Ask if the OC is based on any particular character or idea. Ask how they came up with the name, and if it has any special meaning. Seriously, just ask the author about their original creation.
Tell the author how attached you're growing to their story or their characters.
"It was so [emotion] when [character] did [thing]." For example, "It was so scary when Eddie charged off on his own, I was so worried for his safety!"
Having a tough time in the real world? Let the author know if their fic or characters are a much-needed bright spot in your day.
Is the fic something you normally don't read? "Normally I'm not into [thing], but this fic is so good it's changed my mind!"
Did the author portray a complex topic well, with understanding and nuance? For example: surviving domestic abuse, coming out in a non-supportive environment, dealing with trauma, etc. Tell the author! "I can really tell you did your research. You handled [topic] so well!"
Can you personally relate to a scenario or a character in the fic? Did it touch you on a personal level? Say so!
Is it an older story? COMMENT ON THE OLDER STORY! Tell the author that it still has meaning and relevance, and that readers are still enjoying it today.
Does the fic present a pairing (or relationship) you never considered or never liked before, but now you adore? "This fic has made [pairing] my new favorite ship!" or "I was never really into [relationship] before, but this fic is so well done, I've fallen in love with them!"
A string of heart emojis (or the simple <3 ). As many as you feel appropriate. (One is appropriate. So is one hundred. You decide!) Make a rainbow if you want! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Did the fic make you look at the source material in a new way? Share. "I never noticed [thing] about [source material], but your writing really brought it out!"
Screaming about the pain and agony you're in, especially on whump, hurt/comfort, hurt/no comfort, and similar fics. Some authors are sadists. Let them know you're suffering (in that "oh hell it's so good it hurts" kind of way).
For chapters that end on a cliffhanger: Any screaming about how much the suspense is killing you and you can't wait for the next chapter. (Just remember not to demand the next chapter. "I'm so excited for the next chapter" = good / "You have to update right now or else" = bad.)
Is the fic now part of your official headcanon, right along with the source material? "From now own, this is as official canon to me as the original [book/show/movie]!"
Is the fic's title obvious, or is it a little mysterious? Ask if there's a secret meaning behind the title, or how the author decided on the title.
Ask the author if they have a favorite character, scene, chapter, etc. Depending on the fandom, this can be very specific (favorite weapon, attack, transformation, vehicle, horse, monster, etc.).
Is it smut? Did it make you hot? Trust me, smut authors want to know.
"This [chapter/fic] was so good, I feel like I need a smoke after it."
Is there a mystery that's absolutely boggling your brain? Share your theories! (YES: "Oh, what if Prince Smidgeon is actually killer?"). Just remember to never cross the line into telling the author what to do (NO: "You should make it so Prince Smidgeon is the killer.")
"I wish I could give you a kudos for each word in this [fic/chapter], it's just that good!"
Do you like making art? Ask the author if you can make fanart of their fic!
IF, and ONLY IF, the author has very clearly requested concrit (constructive criticism), then role up your sleeves and get to work putting together truly helpful, supportive criticism. Get started with this guide here.
Do you have other suggestions for this list?
Reblog with your favorite comments to give or receive!
(Tumblr insists on re-starting the list at 1 after the cut and I have no idea how to fix it??? It really is 40, I promise.)

In Which Rose Discovers How To Add Fic To Her Kindle.
Tumblr media
I’ve been horribly behind on reading, especially for longer fics I’ve had on my TBR list forever. And I know some people read on Kindle, so…
I did some research. And it works. (See above: @iamskyereads’ Lie to Me now on Kindle.)
I think this would also work on other e-Readers - especially if you can just drag and drop to a Library with something like Caliber.
How-to:
Find your Kindle device’s email address in the Content and Device settings. It’ll probably be based on your user ID/primary email.
Add the email address you’ll be sending your fics from to your trusted emails in Content and Device > Preferences.
From AO3, download the fics in EPUB format.
Email as attachments to the Kindle device email address.
Give it a couple of minutes… and the stories will appear in your library.

Tumblr media
Change, it was a rude temptress. It lures you in with the promise of shiny places, bright lights and adventures. It’s a hoax. It takes you to uncomfortable, odd places with random strangers that make you miss home.
Change takes your closest friends away from you.
Change is the reason you're walking back home on a cold unfamiliar path, toward a driveway you don't immediately recognise and to a house currently filled with cardboard boxes.
Life had turned around in less than a month's time. You'd known it would change, you had all been preparing for it. Yet none of you were ready for the real thing. Even when you had sat through every packing session with your friends-some packing things into a suitcase, some in cardboard boxes, talking through a million memories and making promises of holding on.
You watched as your friend group, the one that had fit perfectly like pieces of a puzzle slowly began drifting away. Except now each of you carried a part of the others' pieces too. Some moving seas away, some moving just far enough that it still feels like uncharted territory.
You had told yourself you would be brave about this. You would not let this affect you and trigger all the childhood issues attached to it. For the most part, you held onto your words. You'd cleared your dorm and moved bunches of cardboard boxes to a new and unfamiliar place. You had said your greetings to unfamiliar faces, in a stiff outfit at your new place of work. You said goodbyes to two of your closest friends at the airport in the span of a week, without breaking into a single tear.
But the emotional baggage had come out in other ways. In a cowardly move, you began pushing away your boyfriend. The one you had moved in with just weeks ago. The same boyfriend who had helped you through multiple hard times in the three years of university, all with his polite smile and kind heart. The very thought of his kindness made you hurt with guilt. He did not deserve the pain you were putting him through, especially when you both were supposed to be celebrating this fresh and beautiful chapter of your relationship. That is why you stop five steps in front of the new apartment that now belonged to the two of you, looked at his car in the driveway and decided to turn back and take another walk around the block. You needed to clear your head so that you could stop hurting him.
Shua watches from the kitchen window as you turn around and walk away. He leans back on the cabinet and rubs his eyes with his hands. He has tried everything to comfort you and give you the space you needed. He understands that this has been a hard time for you, it has been for him too. He's had to say his own goodbyes and adjust to new places too.
Joshua understands better than anyone else just how hard this might be for you. He also knows that he can't make this right or tell you to process your emotions in a different way. But it is breaking his heart to see you hurt yourself in the process. He's been waiting for a whole week to hear you say more than three words at once. He has had to sit in front of you and watch you refuse every bite of food for a week and it breaks a piece of him every time.
He has been trying his best to help you, from beside and from afar. It felt unfair to him too but he knows this has been triggering all the issues from your childhood and your pushing him away had nothing to do with your relationship at the moment.
Joshua sighs another time, he should not let himself get sucked in his insecurities too. He knows you will come back to him, he knows you will tuck yourself into his arms in sleep like you do every night. And he knows he will pull himself away before you wake up so that you don't feel more guilty than you already do. Till your guilt and pain are ready to be let out, Joshua will wait on the sidelines and remind you that he is still there and your life will continue.
The smell. That is the first thing you notice when you enter the house an hour after deciding to walk around the block. You got sidetracked at the park and ended up staring at trees as you processed everything. You now felt it all but also felt too numb. The emotions and thoughts had gotten too much and you desperately needed to cry in the comfort of your home. That's why you walked back to find Joshua.
You still remember the first time you let yourself cry in his arms after a very painful call with your dad and how he'd held you delicately through it all. He was the first person you had cried in front of since your parent, and it felt good. To finally be held as you broke down, to be reminded that you aren't entirely broken. It felt like home when he hugged you so tight that your heart healed itself.
With tears brimming in your eyes as you look around the dimly lit house, unable to move from the doorstep, the smell gets to you. It smelt like chocolate and flour. You couldn't quite place the smell but you knew someone had baked something and something had definitely burnt at least once. You looked around the living room but all you could hear was a faint hum.
You walked toward the kitchen and a silhouette came into view. Joshua standing, with his back to you, working on something on the counter as hums a song like an angel. He was wearing your old pastel pink apron around his waist, you could see multiple stains on his plain white t-shirt. You smiled as you saw how ruffled his hair was and there was definitely flour on the strands. The smile on your face forms automatically and so do the tears.
It hits you in a wave, the realisation that no matter how hard everything else in the world gets, and how many things change, Shua is here in your shared kitchen, humming as he tries his best to bake you muffins. That's all you need. That's everything he needs- the sweet nothings. The whole world can push you and hurt you, but you'll find yourself in Shua's arms, doing nothing and feeling the joy of everything.
The tears are now pouring like a monsoon rain down your cheeks and you take three big steps before tapping him on the shoulder.
Shua is startled by the sudden tap on his shoulders and he turns with the whisk still in his hands from the mess of a muffin he was desperately trying to make- for the second time that evening. He's even more surprised when he sees you pull him into an embrace. He stays still hands open wide, a whisk dripping chocolate sauce in one hand, as he watches you hold to him so tight he could barely breathe. He stayed still, feeling your sniffs against his chest, your tears soaking up his shirt.
Shua moves very slowly to place his hand around you such that he is cradling your head. He rubs circles on your scalp as you lean into him further and cry your heart out. His heart clenches as he cannot bear to see you so worn down and hurt, but another part of him is glad you chose to come back to him and let out your emotions. Shua understands that with love comes a lot of pain and he cannot expect it all to be gone just because the two of you are in love. All he wants is for the two of you to always come running back to the other when everything and everyone else makes life hard.
You cry till you can't physically anymore. The two of you stay there the entire time, unsure of the time. After you broke out into full-blown sobs, you feel tear drops dampen your hair, you know Shua was tearing up too. He always did. Neither of you could stand the other crying.
So you both stayed there, crying out the pain- the pain of growing up, of moving on, of letting go, of facing your demons, of looking at the start of your life, of an uncertain future and the fear of losing. Shua and you held each other through the fears, a promise to hold on and help each other heal. To hold each other through the storms, the soul deconstructors and through the trials and tribulations of life.
You finally feel lighter and pull yourself back to see his face. Shua is already looking down at you with his sweet smile and eyes that light up your soul. his hair is messy with flour tangled between strands and you finally notice the whisk that has been dripping chocolate sauce all over the kitchen floor and is thoroughly drenched in your tears and chocolate stains.
"Hi." Your voice comes out in a croak and both of you end up cracking up.
"Hello to you too ma'am." He says, his honey-like voice filling up the cracks of your heart.
"You're making something?" You ask feigning innocence as he gives you an embarrassed smile scratching his hair.
"I was trying to bake muffins."
You let out a small smile, "For me?"
He nods and you feel your eye tear up a little more. Shua's eyes widen with worry.
"Babe no. Don't cry. I can clean this all up and maybe we can order real muffins. Or whatever you need. Please don't cry again, my heart can't take it. And your eyes will certainly not be able to take anymore crying." He says in such a state of pure fright and panic that it endears you wholly.
You shake your head, laughing. "No Shua I am not crying don't worry."
"Thank god."
"But I think we should try to salvage these muffins and clean the kitchen." He nods looking around the mess he has made.
"And maybe you should change your t-shirt first." You say as you try your best not to stare at his drenched shirt, sticking to him in all the right places.
Shua smirks, "Oh why babe, is it tempting you?" He asks knowing full well the answer.
You roll your eyes as a blush creeps up your cheeks, "Oh, please it's nothing new."
He hums and strokes a finger across your cheek, "Uh-huh. Is that why you're red as a tomato."
You mock glare at him and pull away from his touch. "If that's how you want to play it, then I'm gonna leave you to clean this mess on your own." He groans. "And, you will sleep on the couch tonight." You add and he looks terribly scared now that it makes you grin.
"Alright alright, let's order good food, clean this up and head to bed." He says and pulls you into an embrace which you graciously acept.
"Thank you." You hear him murmur and look up at his face questioningly at him.
"For coming back to me." He says with a sweet smile and you lean forward to kiss him in response.
As if you would go anywhere but home.

you should go (i want you to stay) | rafe cameron
________________________________________________________________
reader x rafe; after a drunken hookup, you admit how you really feel.
you always hoped you’d end up here. in his bed, naked. his hand ran up and down along your side, the cold ring on his finger making you shiver. you felt him kiss your shoulder lightly before rolling out of bed. you didn’t say anything. instead, you watched him as he pulled his clothes on quickly, a smile on his face as he met your stare.
“well, that was unexpected.” he laughed, picking up your bra and tossing it at you. “unexpected in a good way, i hope,” you replied as you began to get dressed yourself. “unbelievably good.” rafe winked, opening the door to the balcony and sitting down. you smiled, of course, but a part of you was scared. maybe it was your mistake, going this far with your best friend, who you were crazy in love with. as said before, it wasn’t exactly a planned occurrence. and being drunk off your ass, after a huge party didn’t help.
you followed rafe onto the balcony and grabbed the beer you were drinking, finishing it off and opening another without hesitating. “trying to forget it already, huh?” he joked, elbowing you in the arm. “nah, trying to forget something else.” you mumbled, hoping he was too distracted by the crowd downstairs to notice you responded at all. his hand found your cheek, forcing you to look at him. “what’s up?” the concern in his voice made your insides melt.
maybe it was the alcohol or maybe it was the hope you held that he’d feel the same that betrayed the voice in your head telling you not to say anything.
“i’m in love with you, rafe. i’m sorry if that’s weird, and i’m sorry that i-” you couldn’t continue once he pulled his hand away and stood up, shaking his head. “you probably just feel that way because of what we did.” he now stood a few feet away, arms crossed. he couldn’t even meet your gaze. “i’ve felt this way for a long time.” now you stood, inching toward him. “y/n” you don’t know what you're talking about, you don’t love me. okay?” it stung that he was walking over your feelings, instead of accepting them to be true. “rafe-” you began, only for him to cut you off. “this, what we did,” he pointed to the bedroom, where only moments ago everything was perfect. “it was a mistake.’ and as if that wasn’t enough to hurt you, he snatched the beer from your hand, “you should go.”
you felt your heart break right then and there. tears gathered in your eyes, but instead of letting him see how much his words affected you, let them fall after you turned to leave, just as he wanted you to.
weeks passed.
you did everything you could to distract yourself. but nothing seemed to really help. was your friendship with rafe really over because you couldn’t keep it to yourself? you felt you had ruined everything. but reaching out first meant apologizing for how you thought you felt. it meant lying. and you refused to do that. rafe hadn’t made any effort to make amends, either. which only made everything feel worse.
as if you hadn’t made enough mistakes in the last while, you found yourself giving into your friends and going to yet another party. you had been avoiding parties, knowing rafe cameron was more than likely at every single one, or the one hosting.
his house was already packed full of people. your stomach churned, regret filling you already. were you even welcome here anymore? the last time you were here he asked you to leave. it took a bit more convincing from your friends, but you found yourself inside his house with a beer in your hand. you tried to enjoy yourself, but it was hard when you couldn’t help but scan the room every few minutes, watching for him. you’d avoid him, if you did see him, of course, but you silently prayed you wouldn’t see him at all. as if he read your mind, rafe entered the room, a smile on his face as he ran into some of his close friends. a lump formed in your throat. you knew better than to wish you wouldn’t see him at his own party. now that you had, you wished you never came at all.
“i’m sorry guys, i think i’m gonna go.” you said to your friends, who were too busy dancing to the loud music to hear you or notice you leaving. hiding behind people as best as you could, you managed to get to the door before you were stopped by a hand on your shoulder.
“y/n?” rafe’s voice met your ears. you turned towards him slowly, refusing to look directly at him. “i’m leaving, don’t worry.” before you could turn to leave, he stopped you again. “i wasn’t worried, i’m glad you came.” you scoffed, unable to believe him. “really? because the last time i was here you asked me to go. so that’s what i’m doing. i shouldn’t have even came.” rafe flinched, but a look of understanding was apparent.
“please, can we just talk? somewhere less crowded?” he pleaded. you rolled your eyes, knowing you’d follow him anywhere even when you really didn’t want to. instead of responding, you waved a hand, motioning for him to lead the way.
as if it were some cruel joke, he brought you right to his room. “rafe, what’s left to even say?” he shut his door and locked it. now you two were alone, in the very room where everything went to shit weeks ago.
“everything. everything i should have said instead of letting you walk out.”
“you asked me to leave, rafe.” he guided you to sit down next to him on his bed. “yes, i know but, fuck, (y/n) i just couldn’t let myself believe it was possible that you could feel that way for me. it freaked me out.”
“well, i’m glad to know how i feel for you freaks you out. is that all?”
“can you just let me say what i have to say? fuck.” you stayed silent, taken back by his tone.
“i’m a mess, y/n. I do stupid shit, and get drunk, and high, and it scared me to hear you say those words because you deserve more than that. it scared me because no ones ever been able to make me feel the way i feel when i’m with you.”
tears filled your eyes, and rafe took your hands into his.
“i decided the second you said it that you were just confused. but that wasn’t fair to you, just easier for me.”  he wiped a tear from your cheek.
“ what are you saying to me rafe?” you needed him to be straight up, no more beating around the bush. you couldn’t deal with not knowing exactly what he was thinking or feeling.
without warning, his hand flew to the back of your head, your hair tangled in his fingers. he hauled you closer, hungry for your kiss. his lips found yours with greed.
“i’m saying that i fucking love you. and i’m so sorry i couldn’t admit it before.”  you forgave him then and there, gripping his shirt and hauling him back in.
“i want you to stay.” he panted between kisses.
and so you did, just as he wanted you to.

I’m really glad ao3 doesn’t do any sort of wrapped or year in review for a variety of reasons because I don’t think I could mentally handle some of those stats.
Oh I read the same fic four times in a row one night in November? I binged every fic in the “Possessive Hannibal” tag in one week in July? My record number of fics for one twenty four hour period is THREE HUNDRED AND SEVEN?

I've been a Tomarrymort shipper for just over 6 months now, so it's just too early to reread my favorite fics. But there's always A LOT of discussions of Either must die at the hand of the other by @metalomagnetic on my Telegram channel, so I decided to reread it for the first time. And this fic is just bloody brilliant. It's even better for the second time than the first. It evokes so many emotions for me, and I've never saved as many quotes from any fic as I do from this one. It's absolutely one of the best I've read so far 😭

Calling all people who have been reading my little bg3 fanfics. (Like The Bear and The Fox and A Plain Stack of Parchment)
You may not be aware, but I also am like--a writer-writer--like a soon to be author. Like I have one book coming out this year and many others in the queue that I'm presently writing.
Would you like to be tagged in non-fandom works as well? Entirely fine if not, but I did have a lot of feedback that the style in which I write is something people have liked?
