In the Quiet of the Woods [8/20/23]
In the quiet of the woods,
a woman runs
away, away
from a life she couldn't live
In the quiet of the woods,
a woman builds,
and grows, and sews,
until she has a place to exist
In the quiet of the woods,
a woman sleeps
peaceful and happy,
until she is woken by the sound of feet
In the quiet of the woods,
our woman meets another
who introduces herself as "L"
the woman invites her in
In the quiet of the woods,
the women are silent
as a pair of brown eyes
meet a pair of green
The woman hands L a blanket
and a hot cup of tea
"I'm burning bridges," says L
The woman smiles. "You've come to the right place"
The woman takes L's cup
As L drifts off to sleep
The woman sheds a single joyful tear
She isn't so lonely anymore
The next morning,
In the quiet of the woods,
L asks if she can stay,
and the woman beckons L closer
In the quiet of the woods,
the women build,
and grow, and make,
they create a life together
In the quiet of the woods,
the brown eyes meet the green
and though they both feel the same,
neither has said it aloud before
In the quiet of the woods,
the women reach for each other,
a pair of lips whisper, "I love you,"
before they part, and meet, softly and slowly
Outside the small house,
flowers bloom,
and grow, and spread
further and further, as the kiss lingers
In the quiet of the woods,
the women seldom leave
they have no reason,
they have everything they need
In the quiet of the woods,
on a breezy spring day
L finds an infant
swaddled, but abandoned
She takes the child home
she shows it to her beloved wife
the woman stops what she's doing,
and lets out a gasp
In the quiet of the woods,
two beautiful women become parents
their home is growing
and so is their love
In the quiet of the woods,
L asks the woman,
"What should we name our precious child?"
the woman is silent
In the quiet of the woods,
the woman remembers
who she was
before she ran away
her old name
on the tip of her tongue
she uses a new one now,
shared only between her and L
The woman looks at L
she announces her name
from before the woods
"Let's call her Cassie"
In the quiet of the woods,
Cassie grows
she learns to walk
and she learns to play
In the quiet of the woods,
Cassie lays in the wildflowers
in a few hours she will be called in for dinner
today is her seventh birthday
In the quiet of the woods,
Cassie is ready to go
she has just turned fifteen,
and she's embracing the world
She tells her mothers
and they are sad to see her go
but they know that she'll come visit
once or twice a week
In the quiet of the woods,
Cassie returns home each Sunday
she has a place to go,
in a way that her mothers did not
In the quiet of the woods,
L and the Woman know they succeeded.
They've created a home
full of safety and love
In the quiet of the woods,
the two women dance,
as L whispers sweet nothings,
into the woman's ear
In the quiet of the woods,
a teenage girl stumbles on the little home,
as the woman walks outside,
to quiet the girl's heartbroken sobs
the woman guides the girl inside,
and L makes some soup.
The girl, finally safe,
slips into peaceful rest
"She says her name is Lyra"
whispers the woman, as to not wake the girl
"She can stay as long as she likes"
responds L, with a nod
In the quiet of the woods,
the family grows once more,
as Lyra smiles for the first time
in as long as she can remember
from one woman, alone in the world,
to two, who made their own,
to three, who made a family,
to four, who completed it.
In the quiet of the woods,
Lyra grows up fast,
she decided to join her sister,
in the great wide world below
In the quiet of the woods,
the girls return once a week,
like clockwork,
to visit their mothers
In the quiet of the woods,
the women's hair turns gray,
and every day feels like a miracle,
because they have all that they need
In the quiet of the woods,
L's health starts to fail,
and not so long after,
the woman's does too
In the quiet of the woods,
Cassie and Lyra return
They decide to visit for a while,
to take care of the women who took care of them
In the quiet of the woods,
the light begins to fade
from the women's eyes,
as they lay together
In the quiet of the woods,
the woman whispers to L,
"I love you, Lilly"
And Lilly smiles
In the quiet of the woods,
Lilly whispers back to the woman,
"I love you too, Ivy"
And Ivy smiles too
In the quiet of the woods,
the women pass away,
and Cassie and Lyra,
Bury Ivy and Lilly
In the quiet of the woods,
years and years pass.
Cassie and Lyra are gone.
The house is alone and quiet.
In the quiet of the woods,
the house starts to crumble.
A dear walks by,
followed by her young
In the quiet of the woods,
after all these years,
this place in the woods,
is still a place of nurture and care.
