Over at my #patreon, I began a new series back in August. As I get older, and as I went through my mom’s house last year, it occurred to me that I wanted to begin the process of downsizing my movie collection. I will still buy movies, but some movies are at the point where I don’t find much need for them anymore. So, I am giving the discs one, final spin and giving my thoughts on them for subscribers before setting them aside for removal. Maybe revisiting “Aniara,” one of my favorite films of 2019- and currently on Hulu- while during a pandemic lockdown was not the wisest of ideas. But, the film’s haunting vision of an uncertain future of survival in space had a profound impact on me last year. The film is based on a Swedish poem about a commercial space flight taking people to Mars that gets thrown off course. At first, the captain says it will take their initial 3-week flight to 2 years, but, time goes on, the truth is revealed, and slowly, more people have to rely on MIMA, the ship’s psychological soothing chamber, for relaxation to get away from the anxiety. And yet, the anxieties will continue to bleed over into the reality of the situation. We follow the ship from its initial takeoff to the end, which is as starkly haunting as any science fiction film ever made. There are ideas of life and death combines with astonishing images of terrifying beauty that would make Kubrick and Tarkovsky proud.
