One Night - Bellamy Blake
A/N - thanks anon for requesting this!! if you don't mind wattpad and are looking for something a bit longer by me about bellamy, check out my wattpad where i have a book about bellamy! word count - 345
The wind swept across the camp harshly, whipping into tents, pulling up the makeshift pegs that held them together, and putting out the campfire that had seemed to be a constant since the delinquent children of the ark had crash landed on Earth. You stood among it all, arms crossed as you watched chaos erupt. The teenage delinquents all squealed and ran around in delight, the wind blowing hair across faces. A presence joined you, looking over the chaos.
“We need to round up what we can and put it in the dropship,” You told the person. There was no need to look over at him. You knew who it was.
“You don’t know what fun is, do you?” Bellamy asked, and you turned, glaring at the older man.
“I know what survival is, and personally, I’d prefer to live.” You snapped. He turned to you, a smirk on his face.
“You might live, but would you really be living?” He asked. You rolled your eyes, turning back to the camp. You heard a loud sigh from him, but you ignored it. “One night.”
You turned back to him, a frown on your face. “What?”
“Let me show you how to have fun for one night. Let Clarke deal with the weather. Just one night.” He held out a hand for you to take.
“I know what you think fun with girls is, Bellamy. I’m not stupid. And I’m not interested.”
“Oh, sweetheart, not that kind of fun. Though, I wouldn’t be opposed. I mean fun, like what everyone is having right now.” His hand was still raised between you as your hair whipped into your face. You glanced back over to the camp, watching as Clarke exited the dropship with Finn, yelling out at some of the fun-going teenagers to help her with gathering things into the dropship. You turned back to Bellamy with a sigh, looking down at his hand before taking it.
“One night.” You agreed. Bellamy smiled, then led you towards the camp, ready to teach you how to have fun.

A Scene From Serpent's Tongue~Bellamy Blake
Tumblr media
Night falls, camp hushed, stars sharp. I'm alone by a gnarled tree, far from the fire, unraveling, tears burning tracks down my face—Charlotte, Atom, I failed. My thoughts scream—I'm a disappointment, worthless, Marcus was right. My chest flutters—Blood, her body. I'm shaking, sobs tearing free—I'm nothing. Bellamy's voice, soft—"Addy." He kneels, arms pulling me close, and I break, sobbing, his shirt damp. He's crying, faint, breath hitching, and my thoughts hum—He's hurting, with me.
His voice is rough, probing—"Why'd you tell him to kill you, Addy? Why'd you say that?"
His eyes search mine, soft, urgent, hands framing my face. I choke, voice raw—"Because my life's worthless, Bellamy. Nobody would care if I died. Death's better than this, than living with this." My thoughts burn—Charlotte's eyes, Atom's blood, I'm nothing. My sobs shake me—"I failed her, failed Atom, I'm a disappointment, always have been. Marcus knew, he saw it."
My chest caves—I'm his shadow, failing, always.
Bellamy's voice is fierce—"You're wrong, Addy. You're everything, to this camp, to me." His tears fall, glinting, and he pulls me closer—"Nobody caring? That's a lie. I'd care, Octavia'd care, Clarke, Jasper. You're not nothing."
I shake my head—"I let her die, Bellamy. I should've seen, should've stopped her. I'm worthless, death's easier than carrying this."
My thoughts scream—I killed, I failed, I'm done. He grips my shoulders—"You fought for her, Addy, harder than anyone. You're not a disappointment, you're human." His voice cracks—Jaha, Octavia, his guilt. He shares—"I shot a man, for Octavia, and it's heavy, but you see me, and I'm not nothing."
I whisper—"I killed people, Atom, and now Charlotte's gone. Nobody'd miss me." My thoughts hum—Death's peace, I want it. He shakes his head—"I'd miss you, Addy. Every day. You're not alone in this." His hand brushes my cheek, wiping tears, and my thoughts spark—He's here, seeing me.
We talk, long, raw—guilt, blood, us. "Why do you think you're worthless?" he asks, voice soft. I choke—"Marcus made me his legacy, but I broke, let those boys try to break me, let Charlotte fall. I'm nothing."
He's steady—"You survived, Addy. You're stronger than them, than him." I sob—"I don't feel it. I feel empty." He holds tighter—"You're not empty, you're bleeding, but you're alive." His tears mix with mine, and my thoughts hum—He's breaking too, for me. He speaks—"I failed Octavia, Jaha's blood's on me, but you make me want to be better."
I whisper—"You make me want to try, Bellamy." My thoughts spark—I'm not alone. We sit, his arms around me, my head on his chest, his heartbeat steady, and my thoughts soften—I'm breathing, because of him.
He pulls back, eyes locked, hand lingering. "You're enough, Addy, more than enough." I nod, faint—"Maybe, with you." My voice is soft, and his smile's real—"Together, Kane." My thoughts hum—He's trouble, and I'm falling, but it's safe.
We stand, walking to our tents, stars above. He stops—"Goodnight, Addy. I'd have cared if you were gone." His voice is warm, eyes soft, a vow. I nod—"Goodnight, Blake." My thoughts spark—I'm bleeding, but alive, with him, and it's enough.

Pairing: Tim Bradford x fem reader x the 100
Summary: After Raven comes down, the delinquents develop a plan to let the Ark know they’re alive without the radio.
Word count: 1554
Part 4???
The 103 III
It’s been 3 days since we brought Jasper back. He’s still in a lot of pain but seems to be doing a little bit better. Tim and I are on first watch for the night. “It’s so quiet out here,” I say to Tim. “It’s too quiet. The grounders could strike at any moment,“ he says back grumpily. I step closer to him and wrap an arm around his waist and pull him closer. I instantly feel him relax against me. “Don’t be such a grump.” I say jokingly. He chuckles and leans down to kiss me. As I pull away from him, I see a ball of fire come down. “Tim, look, “I say with curiosity. “A shooting star. You should make a wish, baby. I laugh and say “That’s just a myth. They don’t actually come true. Besides, it’s just a big rock burning up in Earth’s atmosphere.” “Doesn’t hurt to try,“ Tim says as he gently grabs my hips. The object doesn’t burn up as it gets closer like it should. “Um, Tim, that’s not a shooting star.”
We run back to the inside of the camp and see the others gathering around. “Did you guys see that?” I asked them. “Yeah. They’re coming to help us. Now we can kick some grounder ass, Jones said. “Please tell me they brought down some shampoo.” Roma, the girl next to him, said. Bellamy walks over with Octavia. “We should get moving. Everyone’s ready,” Octavia says to Bellamy. “No one’s going anywhere. Not while it’s dark. We’ll head out at first light; spread the word, “Bellamy says. Octavia stops Bellamy as he tries to walk off. “Everyone within 100 miles saw this thing come down. What if the grounders get to it first?” "I said wait till sunrise.” Bellamy says firmly.
The next morning I wake up next to Tim in the tent we have been sharing. Tim is still asleep, so I lay my head on his bare chest. “Wake up, Tim, we gotta go see what that thing was,” I say against him. He stirs under me and wraps his arm around me. “In a minute,” he says as he kisses my head. "We gotta get up," I say as I giggle against him. I slid out from under his arm and put my shoes and jacket on. I look back and notice Tim has a sad look on his face. He gets up and puts on his shirt and guard jacket.
“Looks like everyone’s up.” Finn says as Tim and I walk over to him and Clarke. “Where’s Bellamy?“ I asked them. “Let’s find out,Tim said as he walked into Bellamy’s tent. Roma is lying naked in his cot. “Ever heard of knocking?” she says as she covers herself with a blanket. I walk in after him. “Oh great, it’s a free show. Anyone else want to take a look? she says s angrily. “Where’s Bellamy?” Tim said firmly. “I don't know; he left a while ago,” she says. Tim storms out, and I follow. “He told everyone to stay. Whatever is in that thing he wants,” Clarke says when we step out of the tent. “Then we gotta get to it before he does,” I say back. “He wants the radio; we gotta be quick.” Tim says angrily.
An hour later we find the pod. We see there is a passenger passed out in the pilot’s seat. She wakes up and pulls off her helmet. "Aahh. Crap. That’s not good,” she says as she touches her bloody forehead. “Oh my god!” Clarke says as she opens the door to the pod. The girl steps out of the pod. ”Hi. I made it?“ She says. Clarke and I smile and nod at her. “. Ah. I dreamed it would smell like this. Is this rain?” “Welcome home.” Clarke says with a smile.” “Raven!” Finn yells from behind us. “Finn. I knew you couldn’t be dead,” she says as she runs up to him and kisses him. “How did you get here?” Finn asks Raven. “You know that big scraphold? The one on K deck?” She says. “You built that from scrap?”Finn says, gesturing to the pod. “I kind of rebuilt it. It just needed a few parts and some love." “Clarke, we need to put something on her wound,” I say. “Clarke? This was all because of your mom.” “My mom?“ Clarke says confused. “This was all her plan. We couldn’t wait because the council was voting on whether to kill 300 people to save air. “When?” I ask. “Today. We have to tell them you’re alive. She runs back to the pod.”The radio’s gone. It must have gotten loose during reentry. I should’ve strapped it to the A-strut. Stupid”. She hits the dash of the pod in frustration. “No, it’s our fault. Someone was here before us. We need to find him.” I say to Raven.
2 hours later we find Bellamy in the woods. “Where the hell is that radio?” Tim yells at Bellamy. “Hey Bradford, You guys going for a walk in the woods? He says sarcastically.“They’re going to kill 300 people up there,“ I yell at Bellamy. “I don’t know what you guys are going on about.“ Bellamy says nonchalantly. Raven steps between Bellamy and me. “Bellamy Blake? They’re looking everywhere for you. She says. Bellamy turns to Raven. “Shut up.” “That’s why you took the wristbands. “Looking for him, why?” I asked Raven. “He shot Chancellor Jaha, she says back. That’s why you took the wristbands. You wanted them to think we’re dead so you could save your own ass.” Tim says angrily. Bellamy starts to walk away, but Raven starts to follow. “Hey! Shooter, where’s my radio?” She says as she moves in front of him. “Get out of my way,” Bellamy yells. “Where is it?” Raven yells back. “I really should’ve killed you when I had the chance,” he says. “Really? Well, I’m right here.” Bellamy throws Raven against a tree, and she points a knife at him. ”Where’s my radio? “she says behind clenched teeth. “Okay, stop it.” Clarke says, and Bellamy lets go of Raven. “Jaha deserved to die. You all know that.” Bellamy says. “Yeah, he’s not my favorite person either, but he isn’t dead.” Raven reveals. “What? Bellamy says confused. “You’re a lousy shot.” Raven says back. Clarke approaches Bellamy slowly. “Bellamy, don’t you see what this means? You’re not a murderer. You always did what you had to do to protect your sister. That’s who you are. And you can do it again by protecting 300 of your people.Where’s the radio?” “It’s too late.” He says to Clarke.
We all set out to go to the river where Bellamy threw the radio into the water. “Hey! I found it!” Jones said, and we all ran over. “Can you fix it?” I ask Raven as she tries to see the damage. “Maybe, but it’ll take half the day to just dry out the components to see what’s broken.” She says. “Like I said, it’s too late,” Bellamy says. “Shut up, Bellamy.” Tim barks at him. Clarke marches up to Bellamy.Do you have any idea what you did? Do you even care?!” She yells at him in disappointment. “You asked me to help. I helped, he says to her. “Three hundred people are going to die today because of you.”. Clarke says. Raven steps closer to Clarke, “Hold up. We don’t have to talk to the Ark. We just got to let them know we're down here, right?” She says with a smile. “Yeah, but how do we do that with no radio? Finn asks confused. We go to the escape pod to help Raven execute her plan. “We need to launch those flares ASAP if we have any hope of saving those people. Finn, get that control panel to camp. Y/N, you and Tim, pull out those fire circuits in one piece, or they won’t work. Clarke, can I have a hand?" She hands Clarke a wrench. “Work these bolts here gently. Rocket fuel likes to go boom. We’re going to need power to fire”. She explains to her. “They’re trying in the batteries on the dropship. Should be ready when we get there. Clarke informs Raven. “Great, so what’s the problem?” Raven asks, concerned. “Nothing. I just, uh… Well, if we get the rockets to launch, will they see them from the Ark?” Clarke asks nervously. “Like the good book says, it’s all about burn time and cloud cover. But I know your mom will be watching. I’ve never seen anyone love someone the way she loves you. You know, that right?” Raven reassures her. Clarke nods. “I did. It’s complicated”.
A few hours later, after nightfall, Tim and I sit by the fire while we wait for Raven to launch the flares. “Do you actually think that anyone will see them from here?’ I ask him, leaning against his side. “ He leans over and kisses my forehead. “I’m not sure, baby; we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.” He says against my forehead. “You know they’re kind of like shooting stars,” I say, looking into his blue eyes. “Not this again,” he jokes. Raven sets off the flares, and I pull him closer and kiss him passionately.

The dropship rattled and groaned as it made its descent down to earth. You were strapped in tight, but that didn’t take away from how scared you were. You had grabbed the hand of the nearest person to you, which happened to be Monroe. A girl who, alongside yourself, was also locked up in the skybox. You screamed loudly as the dropship gave another shudder, before finally coming to a halt on the hard ground beneath it.
You breathed out a shaky breath and unclenched your fist from around Monroe’s hand.
“Sorry.” You muttered at her.
“T’is fine.” She responded. After your heart rate had gotten back to an acceptable rhythm, you started working on releasing the seatbelt.
You heard comotion on the floor below yours and as soon as you unbuckled yourself you made your way towards the ladder. You jumped down the last couple of steps and turned around. You were faced with the beauty of earth. The greenery, the small, it all almost became too much for you. How was this possible? How were they breathing in this air and not dying?
“Oh, you’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” You mumbled as you noticed the one person you never wanted to see again. “Well, if it isn’t Bellamy Blake.” You said loudly so he would hear. The guy in question looked around for the face that belonged to the voice. His eyes finally met yours as you stepped out into your new world. Others were now also facing you to see what was going on.
“You got me caught.” You said. He raised an eyebrow at you.
“You got yourself caught. I was just the one who brought you in.” He said smugly.
“That’s not something to be proud of around here.” You motioned to the other delinquents.
“I’m on your side.” He said as he noticed the increasingly angry faces around him.
“Maybe down here, but not up there.” You pointed to the ark still high in the sky. “And I don’t see how that makes a difference. You still sided with the guards that threw us in the skybox.”
“All I care about is Octavia, okay?”
“Octavia? Who the fuck is Octavia?” You asked confused.
“My sister.” He said. Multiple shocked gasps were heard.
“You have a…sister?” You asked confused.
“How is that possible?” Someone asked from behind you.
“He’s talking about me.” A girl with long brown hair said. “I’m Octavia.” You looked between the two of them, shock written all over your face.
“You’re the girl they found under the floor.” You said with awe.
“That’s me.” She said awkwardly.
The next couple of days you stayed clear of him, not wanting to see his face. His betrayal hurt you deeply. However today you couldn’t avoid him and you bumped into him on your way to guard duty.
“Y/N.” He said, stopping you in your tracks.
“Bellamy.” You responded. He looked at you for a second, before pulling on your arm and dragging you to a secluded spot. You had to admit, this shaggy hair looked better on him then his slicked back hair ever did.
“What do you want?” You asked, raising an eyebrow at him.
“I only took the job to keep O safe.” Bellamy explained.
“So?” Bellamy looked uncomfortable for a second.
“So, I never intended to get you caught.”
“Then why did you?” You asked, now getting angry. “Why couldn’t you just let me go?”
“Because Shumway had seen the footage, there was no getting around it. If I didn’t do it, I would have lost my job and someone else would have caught you.” You looked at the ground, figuring out what to say, but all you managed to say was, “Okay.”
“Okay?”
“Okay.” And with that you turned around and walked back to your job. You weren’t okay with it, but you also saw that he didn’t have a choice.
“Hey!” He said before you were out of earshot. You turned back around to face him. “I wouldn’t have done anything different if I could do it over again.”
“So you’re not even sorry you got me caught?” Your temper flaring again.
“No,” He said, rubbing a hand over his forehead, “I wouldn’t have met you otherwise.” He said sheepishly.
A slight blush rose to your cheeks. Was he flirting with you? You quickly rolled your eyes at him and made your way back to guard duty. You guys had bigger things to take care of.
When the grounders attacked two weeks later you’re still recovering from the sickness that ravaged the camp as are most of the delinquents. You ran towards the gun cache and armed yourself with a rifle, but you felt yourself shake as you spotted the many grounders now encircling your camp. You aimed your rifle at one of the grounders trying to claw its way in and after taking a big breath you pulled the trigger. The grounder fell motionless to the floor. It shook you to your core, knowing you just killed someone. Knowing it probably won’t be the last time.
All of a sudden you were thrown to the ground. A big grounder stradling you, using his hands to cut off your airflow. You struggled. You grabbed at the ground beside you, trying to grasp the gun that had flown away after his tackle. Trying to grasp anything to help you escape. You started to see black dots in your vision. Your heart beating rapidly in your ears. You were going to die. This was it. You clawed at his hands, trying to squeeze your fingers between his to relieve the pressure on your throat, but nothing seemed to work.
When your eyesight fully disappeared you felt a calm come over you. Maybe dying wasn’t so bad after all. But before you could think about it anymore, the pressure lifted and you took in a big painful breath, clutching at your throat. You scrambled backwards from where you were laying, trying to get as much ground between you and the grounder. You coughed loudly, trying to clear your airway. You rapidly opened and closed your eyes to get your sight back.
Once you could see again you looked for the grounder who had attacked you. The grounder lay unmoving in the grass, blood pouring from a wound on his head. You looked up and noticed Bellamy standing over him with a blood covered rock in his hands.
“Are you okay?” He asked husky. You nodded at him, not trusting your voice. You rubbed at the skin over your throat, probably red and purple from the fight.
“Good.” Bellamy said. He held out a hand for you to grab and you did. You stood shaky on your legs for a second, but found your balance eventually.
“We gotta go.”
“Okay. Where?” You croaked. Bellamy looked around the clearing.
“Bellamy. This way!” Finn yelled from around the camp. He motioned for you to follow through a tunnel you all built just in case of an attack like this. Bellamy pushed you forward with his hand on your lower back, keeping you steady as you trip over a log.
You run until you can’t breathe anymore. Doubling over to get as much air in your lungs as possible. It still hurt from your previous attack, your throat dry and scratchy.
“Let me get a look at that.” Bellamy said. He got closer and waited for your reaction. You nodded and he used his hand to push your chin up so he could have a better look at your neck. His fingers raked over your throat, his touch making you shiver.
“You should cool the area. Try to fight off the swelling.”
“How do we do that?” Finn asked, looking concerned for you.
“We use a piece of cloth and soak it in water. It’s the best we can do.” Bellamy explained.
He tore a strip of his shirt and dunked it in the nearby river.  Then he walked over to you.
“Sit.” He said, placing the cloth over your throat as you listened to his order. You leaned your head back so the material would stay on your neck. The coolness of the fabric immediately soothing the skin.
"Oh, that's nice.” You moaned, your hand reaching up to touch the cloth covered skin.
“We need to find a place to sleep.” Finn said. Bellamy nodded at him and looked around.
“We need to find the others.” You murmured.
“Tomorrow.” Bellamy agreed. “Tomorrow we will go back. For now, we need sleep and time to heal.”
The guys looked for twigs and started a small fire. You had nothing to eat, but you weren’t even sure if your throat could handle it anyway. As night fell you lay down on the cold and hard ground. Bellamy sat on a log, poking a stick into the fire every so often. He looked over at you and smiled.
“Sleep. I’ll watch over you.” And as scared of him you were up in the Ark, you felt as safe down here. You noticed that Finn had also already laid down and you wondered if Bellamy was going to take watch all night or if you should offer to switch half way through. But before you could even form the words your eyes had already closed and your mind was taken over by a heavy fog.
The following day you woke up to the sun rising above the threes. Dew covered the forest around you. You looked around, noticing only Finn hanging around your campfire.
“Where’s Bellamy?”
“Here.” He said, stepping out of the trees, “Just getting us some berries for breakfast.” He said after he popped on in his mouth. He handed you a handful and the rest he gave to Finn.
“How’s your throat feeling?” You took one of the berries and started chewing on it, trying to smush it as much as possible, knowing it would go down rough. Finally you swallowed and flinched in pain when the berry went down.
“Could be better.”
“We should get to camp. Clarke could look at it for you. Maybe she has another idea.” You tried another berry, but as it hurt just as much as the first one, you handed the leftover ones to Finn who was wolfing them down as if he hadn’t eaten in days.
“Yeah, let’s go. No use in hanging around.” You said. Bellamy gave you a hand, helping you up.
“Do you think the grounders are still there?” Finn wondered aloud.
“We were strong. I’m sure we survived the fight. They must have at least retreated once they knew they weren’t going to win.” Bellamy assured.
Your trek back to camp was long, your body tired, your neck sore. But what you saw as you entered the camp froze you to your spot. The ground was littered with burned bodies. And you couldn’t tell whether they were friendly or foe.
“Holy shit. Raven must have been able to fire the rockets, burn them fuckers alive.” Finn said, impressed.
“Let’s just hope none of our people were involved.” You interjected. You slowly made your way through the field of bodies to the dropship. You grabbed the flap that was hanging from the ceiling and pushed it aside. Immediately you stepped backwards as a gun was trained on you.
“Raven!” You said surprised.
“Y/N! Thank god, I thought you were one of them.” You noticed she looked terrible. Her skin clammy and she was shivering.
“What happened to you?”
“I got shot.”
“Shot?” You furrowed your brows at her. “That means it was one of us who’s done this.” Raven only nodded, not giving you a name. Both Bellamy and Finn walked in behind you. Finn ran up to Raven, who was writhing on the ground in pain.
“Where are the others?” Bellamy asked as he looked around the dropship.
“They’ve been taken.”
“Taken? By who?” He asked again.
“I don’t know. They used this gas to make us pass out. I must not have made the cut.” Raven said as Finn helped her sit up.
“Whoever is in there, show yourself.” A male voice yelled from outside. All four of you turned to the entrance. Bellamy grabbed Raven’s gun and slowly walked out the dropship. You could hear muffled talking from outside. You decided to go investigate on your own, making your way towards Bellamy.
“Councilman Kane.” You said softly, not sure if you were seeing things right. Last you knew all the Arkers were still up in the sky.
“Yes, Miss Y/L/N. We’ve made it to earth.” He knew who you were from your sentencing.
“Are you okay?” Abby Griffin asked as she looked at your neck. You remembered her from your visit to the hospital wing a couple months back.
“I will be.”
“Have you seen Clarke?” She asked hopeful.
“Not since last night. Raven said they were taken. Speaking of Raven, she needs medical attention.” You said, motioning for her to follow you inside the dropship. Abby immediately went to work.
You had made your way back outside again, standing next to Bellamy, having a conversation with Kane.
“Do you have a camp?” you asked full of hope.
“We do.” Kane nodded at you. “We’re gonna get you back safe and then start looking for your friends.” You and Bellamy shared a look. You didn’t know if you could trust Kane. He was one of the people that had decided the 100 were dispensable.
Kane made his way into the dropship, wanting to get a look at Raven himself. You and Bellamy stayed outside. Bellamy raked a hand through his hair, clearly agitated. You snaked your fingers in between his hand and squeezed once, letting him know you were there for him. He turned to face you.
“I should have been here.”
“You did good, Bellamy. Without you I wouldn’t be standing here right now.”
“I should be with the others. Wherever they are.”
“We will find them and bring them home.”
“How?”
“We will find a way.” He was looking away from you and you used your other hand to make him face you. “You did good.” He looked so broken and your heart shattered for him. He had taken his leadership hard, promising to keep them all safe. And now here he was in a field surrounded with burned bodies not knowing if his friends were safe.
“Hey.” You said, grabbing both sides of his face so he was looking you in the eye. “Stop being so hard on yourself.” Bellamy’s eyes switched between looking at your eyes and lips. You wet your lips and before you knew it, the two of you were kissing. His lips rough against yours. One of your arms wrapped around his neck, the other still on his cheek. Bellamy’s arms engulfed your body, pulling you even closer.
Thinking about it now, you wouldn’t change getting caught either. Otherwise you wouldn’t have met Bellamy Blake. And that would have been a shame.

Project SS
It stared as an idea. Take a dying child and infect them with the SS serum. These children would be raised in isolation, to be the future soldiers for the ark, then earth.
Most died out over time.
Not her, Not Y/n Kane. The only child of Marcus Kane and his wife Alice Kane. After her birth, born with a weak heart Alice Kane decided to give her to the scientists that were working on the project.
Forging her husband’s signature upon the document Alice Kane was sentenced to death. The deal though and Y/n Kane became the most deadly of the super soldiers.
When protecting a friend she finds herself in a cell. Then in her way to earth with the rest of the 100. How will her love continue knowing she’s just puppet to be controlled. Will she grow out of such a horrible situation and blossom with the help of her friends and loved ones. Or will she fall so deep into her created identity that there is no hope.

Why Do We Still Call Kidlit 'Simple'?
You can read below or for free on my Substack
I’m noticing a trend in online spaces lately, namely that Young Adult and Middle Grade literature are called ‘simple’ or ‘simplistic’.
Kidlit, which encompasses picture books, chapter books, early reader books, MG, and YA, should be at a level that their intended target audiences can understand. Prose, word choice, and themes should reflect where younger readers are at and break ideas down in a way that is accessible. For instance, Once Upon a Sari by Zenia Wadhwani alludes to the Partition of India, opening the door for future education while celebrating sari. The kids who are ready for more mature books will probably naturally gravitate towards books above their age group. But the more I sit with that reasoning, the more the term ‘simple’ doesn’t actually make sense.
Middle Grade fantasy Farrah Noorzad and the Rings of Fate by Deeba Zargarpur has a lead who not only is the daughter of an unwed Muslim mother, but she only sees her father once a year and has to spend time with a half-brother she never even knew she had. That’s not an easy situation; perhaps it doesn’t explore the topic in the way an adult reader would prefer, but that doesn’t make it ‘simple.’ Yet, this is a very real situation some children grow up in.
Not Like Other Girls by Meredith Adamo and the upcoming Gita Desai is Not Here to Shut Up by Sonia Patel are both YA examinations of how we treat young women, the impact of sexual assault years down the road, and how we push our trauma away until we are safe enough to start dealing with it. To refer to either book as ‘simple’ would be to ignore how they deal with the complexities of being a teenage girl who is sexual and has been sexually assaulted or how the people around them believe they can take what they want without any repercussions. Gita Desai can get very uncomfortable in how it depicts CSA in part because it’s through the eyes of a young child while Not Like Other Girls features Jo realizing just how young she was when she was assaulted. Both are unmistakably YA novels from the voice, themes, and the age of the characters but there is no question that they are mature books that treat their readers with respect.
Beyond those two examples, we have Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, and a plethora of YA and Middle Grade books discussing police brutality, Queerphobia, xenophobia, ableism, Islamophobia, racism, immigration, classism, colonization, and more. Young people are hungry for books that explore the world around them and the ways in which we can improve or dismantle the systems that are failing our society. Many of our political movements are started or helmed by young people. Most American teens read Huckleberry Finn or The Great Gatsby in school specifically so political themes can be addressed, so of course there are books written for them that continue to explore those topics in more recent, relevant and no less complex ways.
So, OK, maybe instead of themes, ‘simple’ is meant to refer to prose and structure or characters. Allison Saft’s prose is lush and poetic while horror debut Lockjaw by Matteo L. Cerilli not only has gorgeous prose, but the narrative structure often changes the reader’s perceptions of events and other characters. Katniss in Hunger Games by Susanne Collins is not a typical hero; her main goal is ‘survival,’ not doing the right thing or defeating some great evil. She is fighting a system that is hurting her world because she was never given any other choice.
Meanwhile, several adult authors are often praised for having accessible prose so that people who left reading behind can return to it. Most books, including in adult, are at roughly an 8th grade reading level, which is not a bad thing at all as not everyone is going to have the same access to quality education. Some adult novels are fairly straight-forward battles of good and evil or have clear cut morals presented.
Prose in YA, MG, and adult can be poetic, lush, voice-y, or none of those things. It’s less of an age category classification and more of a style of an individual author and a scale of commercial versus literary. A Deadly Education by adult fantasy author Naomi Novik is a crossover appeal book that is a study in voice-driven narratives while YA author Laini Taylor is often praised for her lyrical prose. For the most part, YA is going to feel voice-y, because that is a standard of the age category, but not all voice-y books are YA and not all lyrical prose is found in adult.
Maybe it’s about the worldbuilding? Nightbirds by Kate J. Armstrong is essentially about sex work in a fantasy Prohibition setting. Matilde, Æsa, and Sayer sell their magic and transfer it temporarily via a kiss. There are characters who point out that the Nightbirds are selling themselves in the same way people discuss stripping or pornography. We have a YA fantasy openly making direct comparisons to sex work, having three characters who are in the business for different reasons and have different relationships with it, and explores not only the dangers sex workers can face, such as stalking, but also how potential partners can think about the business.
Worldbuilding in speculative fiction, across all age categories, comes in spectrums of soft and hard, high and low, thematic and vibe, secondary world and contemporary/historical. A large amount of YA fantasies have epic stakes while cozy fantasy is currently quite popular with adults. Middle Grade largely gravitates to portal fantasy, which mixes the secondary and contemporary settings. Space and science fantasy are popular in MG, YA, and adult. The nitty-gritty of secondary world economics might be more common in adult fantasy, but it isn’t required by any means.
No speculative author, at any level, is required to provide Tolkien-esque worldbuilding.
When I read YA, Middle Grade, and adult, I set my expectations accordingly that certain topics might get explored and others might not. A quote that I’m seeing more and more is that adult readers of kidlit are guests in that space, and I do agree. I love the emotional character work of YA and how Middle Grade helps kids in difficult situations start to put names to their feelings. In adult, I expect more lingering on logistics or to have darker renditions of themes and more nostalgia.
Kidlit, for decades, has allowed young readers to start building empathy for people outside of their sphere, to give them a frame of reference for future interactions. The main purpose of kidlit is the same purpose that adult fiction has: providing readers with catharsis or escapism or a learning opportunity or a way to pass the time. The names of these age categories have shifted a lot since I was a kid; ‘teen’ used to be a very small section and I don’t clearly remember a Middle Grade section pre-Percy Jackson. But, kidlit can and often does explore genocide, war, abuse, unconventional family situations, and is now starting to explore polyamory as a possible romantic option as well as Asexuality. Some of its prose is more explicit and does point things out themes more, but so does adult.
Many children grow up in environments that plenty of adults can only imagine, environments that need to be depicted so they can see themselves and start to process what happened to them or at least learn that they are not alone. Many adults look for more simple premises as a form of escapism during difficult times. I have read YA books that are deeply emotional and can feel brutal in their themes and I have read adult books that make me laugh or I’m gushing about how cute it was.
‘Well, it’s about quality-’ I think we can all agree that all readers, of any age, deserve quality books that respect them and I am seeing wonderful examples of this in kidlit. I don’t understand the argument that media for children is of poor quality unless it’s meant to be a critique of how companies don’t care about children’s media because what they really prioritize is profits. The suggestion that poor quality means it is made for young people is insulting young people and the creatives who make things for them, people who are passionate about stories.
I don’t think kidlit is ‘simple’ by any means. We need to think about why we suggest books intended for young people are any less layered than books for adults. We need to ask if we’re using ‘feels like YA/MG/kidlit’ to mean ‘this doesn’t meet my specific expectations/tastes’ or ‘this is bad’ and how that minimizes the trials and tribulations of young people or implies that they don’t deserve good books.

Silent Bloom
Parings: Finn Collins/reader Bellamy Blake/reader
Warnings: None
Chapter: 2.01
"Ok, tell me again."
You groaned into your hands. You had explained everything that had happened, from the mountain men chasing you to Ada letting you go countless times that morning. Blinking against the sun shining in your eyes, you let out a deep sigh. "I can’t. I’m sorry, but I’ve gone over it so many times the details are starting to become fuzzy."
Clarke gave you an uncertain look before leaning back in her chair. You yawned into your hand and fought against the urge to close your eyes. The lack of sleep was starting to catch up with you.
Bellamy cleared his throat, which helped ease the growing awkwardness. "Tell us again what the plan is."
"It's a labyrinth. We got to the dam through this tunnel. It's all connected to the mine system. That's our way in."
Bellamy looked skeptical. "Are you sure we can get past the reapers and the..." He paused as his eyes lingered on you before continuing, "mountain men? I swear to God if your mom doesn’t sanction the mission, I’m going by myself."
"You won't be by yourself," Clarke confirmed.
Your jaw opened slightly as you noticed Finn walking towards your table. Gulping, you did your best not to make eye contact with him. "Guess the inquisitions are over," Bellamy said, giving you a sympathetic look. "How's Finn doing anyway?"
You shrugged. "I haven’t spoken to him since...since I came back."
"Hey," Finn said softly.
You continued staring at the table in front of you while Finn made small talk with Bellamy, and Clarke. You were afraid to look at him. The Finn Collins who did this wasn’t the same boy you grew up with. He wasn’t your best friend, or lover. The person standing next to you was a stranger. A murderer.
"Next round on me," Bellamy said as he stood up to leave the table. He squeezed your shoulder as he walked behind you.
Finn sat down across from you. "Mount weather, what’s the plan?"
"Still working on it."
Glancing at the blonde beside you, it finally sank in how Finn’s actions had affected everyone. Clarke had lost one of the few friends she had, and you couldn’t even imagine what this was doing to Raven. You stood up from your chair and finally made eye contact with Finn. Staring into his brown eyes hurt. He looked so lost and confused, but it still didn’t change what happened. "Excuse me, I need to get some fresh air."
"You look lonely out here."
You frowned instantly upon hearing his voice. You weren’t in the mood. "What do you want, Murphy?"
Murphy placed his hands on his chest, pretending to be hurt, before sitting down on the ground next to you. "Not interested in our hero’s gathering either?"
"I came outside because I needed some air."
Murphy made a scoffing noise, "I thought you would have been the council's new shiny toy. I’d heard you’d escaped grounders and our good friends from the mountain."
"And I heard Bellamy almost beat you to death again for trying to hang him."
You noticed Murphy toying with his fingers. "Yeah yeah, the same old Murphy that everyone hates."
"I don’t hate you." You looked at him, confused, as he shook his head, and scoffed. Did Murphy think you were mocking him? Despite everything that he’s done, you didn’t hate him.
"What, do you think I’m lying?"
"You kicked me down a ladder."
"In all fairness, you had it coming." Murphy nudged your shoulder as you both laughed until you saw the others getting ready to leave. "Can I ask you something? Would you have done it?"
Murphy let out a sigh, before answering. Even without saying the actual words, he knew what you meant. "I tried to stop him...I’ve done similar things to survive."
"No, no you haven’t. We’ve all done things we aren’t proud of, but nothing... eighteen people are dead. I always thought I’d do anything to protect my friends, but after this, I’m honestly not so sure."
"He didn’t do that because he was looking for a friend. Finn did it because he’s in love with you."
As you opened your mouth to reply, Octavia’s voice cut you off. "We are getting ready to leave."
"Try to stay out of trouble, Murphy," you said as you nodded and stood up to join her.
"Right back at ya, Daze."
You walked beside Octavia in silence until you approached the rest of the group. The first thing you noticed was Abby shaking her head. "No, absolutely not. I’m sorry Y/N, but you can’t come with us?"
"Why?"
"Because..." her eyes moved to the side where Finn was standing.
"I’ll be a distraction."
The older woman nodded, "there are plenty of ways you can help in camp."
You rolled your eyes. Abby’s tone was patronising but you decided not to think much about it. You hugged Octavia. "Watch what you're doing out there, okay? I need you to come back in one piece."
She chuckled softly, "I always do."
You stepped back to let her pass and felt somebody squeezing your shoulder gently. Spinning round, you smiled, seeing Bellamy staring at you. He looked worried. "You’re not coming?"
"This is one party I’m not invited to."
"Voluntarily?" You didn’t expect to hear the harshness in Bellamy’s voice as he spoke.
"Abby has a point," you said quietly. Something seemed off. Bellamy was more intense than usual. Placing your hand on his, you sighed. "It’s probably for the best that I sit this one out."
You looked back to hear Clarke calling his name. "You need to go. Just…"
He chuckled, "I’ll keep them safe."
You smiled softly before letting his hand go. You watched the small group walk away while finding it hard not to worry.
"Hey."
You jumped when you heard somebody talking, dropping the pen and paper that were in your hand. "Jesus Finn, you scared me!"
"Sorry...I’ll leave you to it."
"No, I’m sorry." You sighed, "I just got a fright because I didn’t hear you come in. When did you guys come back?"
"About an hour ago, I was surprised I didn’t see you."
"I’ve been in here doing the food inventory. Is anybody hurt?"
"One of the guards died, but other than that, no," Finn said, leaning against the wall, his head bowed. "We almost got caught by acid fog but everyone managed to hide."
"Then what happened to the guard?" You asked.
"Lincoln killed him. He has been turned into a reaper. The mountain men turned him into one of them."
You stared at Finn's mouth agape while trying to process the information. If mountain men were able to turn Lincoln into a reaper, you dread to think what could be happening to Monty and Jasper. "God, I need to go find Octavia."
"Daisy, can you wait? We need to talk."
A wave of guilt washed over you. "I know we do, but Octavia-"
"O will need me," you said, frowning when Finn cut you off.
"She has Clarke and Bellamy with her."
You picked up the pen and paper you dropped previously in silence. You didn’t know how to talk to him anymore.
"You can’t stop looking at me like that."
"Like what?"
"I’m a monster you're afraid of."
"I don’t think you’re a monster, you just made a really bad judgment call."
The haunted look on his face sent a chill down your spine. "I thought they had you, and everybody else. When I saw Clarke’s father's watch, something just snapped inside me. I can’t explain it."
You look down at the ground, not knowing what to say. You couldn’t imagine the guilt that must have been eating away at him.
"Do you think we can ever get it back? What did we have before?"
Tears threatened to spill from your eyes. "I..I don’t know. So many things have happened, and I hope we can be friends again, but it will take time."
"What I did in the village was wrong, but at the time I thought it was the right thing."
"It's not just about the village..." you couldn't stop crying as your voice broke."You chose her over me."
"Daze…"
"No, don’t keep cutting me off. Do you know how hard it was watching you with somebody else? Especially when you spent the night before with me? I was heartbroken Finn but I kept it together the best I could. You made your choice. You chose Raven over me and expect me to act like nothing happened."
"It wasn’t like that Daisy. Raven means so much to me, I didn’t want to hurt her."
His words stung the same way being physically hurt would. Finn had a big heart, and regardless of how much he cared, you’d always be second best, and you couldn’t settle for it anymore. Hearing footsteps getting closer, you did your best to compose your emotions.
"I need to hand this in, and check on Octavia." You sighed, looking at him, "You still mean a lot to me, Finn. I’ve never stopped caring about you. We just need to take it slow with rebuilding our friendship again."
"Baby steps?"
You chuckled, "baby steps are fine with me."

secrets out. bellamy blake x reader
summary 🛁: alie gets under the skin of everyone, even the ones who seem the most shut off
warning/s 🚽: swearing, depression, talks of miscarriage, and gif not mine, angst
slater’s note 🪞: season three truly was the best season. this is... dramatic? it has potential but i gave up.
Tumblr media
it was your turn.
alie crossed all of them off like a list. one by one, mind fucking them until they couldn’t handle it.
mind manipulation, you knew all about it and you were certain that it wasn’t something you could be so easily affected by. you had met a lot of people, had a lot of boyfriends, and friends, and even your own parents who enjoyed getting into your head with simple words that made you feel guilty or sick to your stomach.
you were sure she couldn’t get into yours.
“hello, sweetheart,” raven quirked her head, already analyzing you and your current mood. “see they finally brought in the big guns.”
you humph in amusement with lips slightly twitching upward as you made your way to one of the boxes that sat close to raven. you were hoping to rest, put your mind to ease as you sat before her, not expecting much to come from her mouth since you were a closed book.
clarke and jasper were practically left open and begging to be read as they sized up to raven with their emotions still filling their eyes to the brim. they were easy targets, easy to tear down, and easy to extract a fit from.
and although bellamy seemed just as shut off as you, he really wasn’t. bellamy had so many problems shoved in the back of his mind that they begun to pile and overflow. and with anger issues compiled from unsettled issues in his past; he was just as much as an easy target as they were.
everyone hits rock bottom, but not all get to face the humiliation of others also realizing and coming to spit in your face.. a plan alie was hoping to put in motion, she just had to bait you first.
“you’ve always been the smart one,” she slightly twisted her head, raven’s eyes dark and filled with a conscious that wasn’t her own. “always thought for the better of others.. never yourself,” she shook her head and you could tell by the way her eyes slightly squinted she had something up her sleeve.
you were intrigued.
“so.. selfless and yet you’re always blamed for every problem that comes up. why do you let that happen, y/n?”
you tilted your head to the side, not exactly finding truth in the last of her words, you had never felt blamed, and if anyone was a scape goat, it’d be murphy. but you still found yourself listening, eating up the lie like a story.
“which is why i’m confused as to.. why you took the chip..” her face screwed up and at the sudden words you inhaled sharply knowing very well everyone heard her words just as you did. “i mean, y/n, as much as a smart decision that was, it was a rather selfish thing of you to do, don’t you think?”
you kept your mouth shut, knowing this wasn’t the last of her words. she had a plan of some kind, she was still trying to get into your head and she felt so close by the way she had just watched you adjust yourself in the slightest way possible.
“like i said before,” you mumbled, “your chip didn’t work.”
“that’s too bad, isn’t it?” she whispered, almost taunting you, “whatever’s hurting you must be something real bad with how brave and strong you are, or—excuse me, seem to be.”
“someone should go in there,” jasper suddenly stood from his spot at the door, listening in, his mouth beginning to grow dry as he stood up anxiously, looking between bellamy and the rest of your friends listening with just as slack and uncomfortable expressions; taken aback.
he made a move to go in but bellamy quickly stopped him, “just wait.”
“bellamy-”
“but then again, the strongest of us always seem to carry the most. you would know wouldn’t you?”
your mouth twitched from frowning deeper as you thought of all the past torment, from the moment you were born to the moment you landed on the ground.
“shall we talk about why you took the chip?”
“we can talk about whatever you want,” you leaned forward with your elbows on your knees.
this couldn’t get any worse than it already was.
“i want you to choose. bellamy or mount weather?”
you swallowed harshly, but your voice was still stern as you stared at her with narrowed eyes, “neither,” you leaned forward, thinking of the many flaws to weaknesses that centered in your heart just with the those topics. “i want to talk about you, raven, only you.”
“deflecting the question won’t work, y/n,” she almost glared at you, “you said we could talk about what i wanted and now i made a decision; i want to talk about what happened in mount weather after you got shot.”
your face dropped and you didn’t even try to hide it, remembering exactly what she was talking about and the room suddenly felt hot and you wanted to leave but you felt completely sucked in like she was a vacuum, giving you no choice but to get swallowed.
“you were pregnant, right?” raven’s head dipped to the side, already knowing she had gotten to you despite your face no longer showing a sign of distress. “with a little girl?”
jasper’s gaze, as well as everyone else’s, landed on the side of bellamy’s jaw, eyes wide, holding their breath, waiting for him to step in, to stop it, do anything but freeze up like a stick, struck dumb with shock.. and hurt and a pain he couldn’t distinguish, something he had never felt before to the point he didn’t even know if it was all real.
raven tsk’d, eyes landing on her lap, “such a shame really.” you could see the sick smile that began to climb up her cheeks, making you want to scream, shout, anything to get rid of the pain clawing at your chest. “does bellamy know?” she looks up, as if wanting to really know, as if she didn’t already. “i mean he is the father after all, you think he’d deserve to know.”
he knew now.
“bellamy, do something,” clarke gaped at him, her hand tugging at his arm, begging him to snap out of the trance he was in. “bellamy, you need to go in there. you need to get her out of there."
“he held you... thinking you'd die, completely unaware of the baby inside that really took the bullet," raven inhaled, sighing, her head shaking. "that really is sad, i don't know how you didn't end it-"
you got up and she smiled, anticipating this moment. but you don't do what she wished you'd do. you stood calmly, staring deep into her hazel pupils, amusement snowing around, almost encouraging you to inflict pain on her.
"you're not real," your voice is low and quiet, "you can't effect me. you promote a false devotion and promise a final happiness and safety from pain, but you're flawed and can't even bring the weak of us down."
your eyes dart back and forth in search of some emotion in her eyes, but it seems she goes blank and shuts down like a computer until her jaw tips up, pulling closer to your face, whispering back, "you think that you're so brave, y/n. you think that you're some courageous soldier just because of the luck you had of showing up in the right place at the right time," you feel a hand grip your bicep while the other wrapped around your mid section, slowly pulling you away from the words that ran out of her mouth fast, “but you're wrong, deep down you're coward just like all your friends and my point is only further proven when you took the chip, because admit it y/n, you're scared, you're scared-"
you felt like you had been ripped from a different world once bellamy had spun you around to face him. your body shook internally as realization overcame you of what had all been revealed within that room. bellamy looked scattered as he stared into your eyes with his own wide ones. he didn't look himself; he looked worried and maybe even sad.
very sad.
"y/n, sit down for me, please," he grasped your arms lightly, pulling you down on one of the chair slowly and gently, afraid you'd break under his touch. he was completely disoriented and he wasn't even sure if what was all happening was real.
you stayed blank in the mind, feeling completely drained and distraught to the thought of what was running around in his head right now. it hurt that he now knew everything.
"talk to me," he slowly kneeled before you, "what—baby, what happened to you?"
you inhaled sharply, the feeling of tears beginning to form in the crest of your eyes as you begun to feel overwhelmed—your chest tightened and it seemed like such a strain on your lungs when you tried to breathe, "bellamy, a lot happened in... mount weather that i can't even begin to explain. i'm not even sure what was real and what wasn't."
"i was in a dark spot," it was hard to force out and you could barely look him in the eye with the intensity he kept within his eyes. his heart hurt for you and he couldn't even begin to think straight with all that was revealed with raven. "i can't think straight half the time, bellamy and after everyone was killed at mount weather.. and i was shot... i didn't feel like the same person anymore.. nothing felt right..."
you choked. your voice caught in the back of your throat as you attempted to explain yourself but he stopped you, shushing your voice as your tears begun to slowly fall and paint your cheeks. he pulled you close by the back of your neck, stroking his thumb against your scarred skin while the other wrapped around your waist, pulling you to him and his warmth. he held you tightly and so hard, that his ribs hurt but he didn't care because he was afraid that you'd slip from his grip, like you had before.
but you stayed and you held him just as tight, allowing yourself to sink, because this was the only thing that truly felt right.
