“Happy birthday.” He says for the thousandth time as he scoops Hals up and settles her in his lap, determined to hog as much of her time as possible despite all of the people around who no doubt want to see her. Putting the party together hadn’t been easy - truth be told, without Artemis’ help Tom probably wouldn’t have been able to pull it off, and he’s already got a note for himself to get her a nice present in thanks later on. Today, though, one hundred percent of his attention is on Haley and making sure she has the most incredible day imaginable. “What do you think? Too much? “can i just give you your gift now?” she whined - rather CHILDISHLY, really, considering she was about five years too old for such a tone to really work. nora HATED surprises. and worse, she hated having to keep things a surprise from others, because she LIKED to buy people things, and she liked to see their reactions to those things IMMEDIATELY - something she wouldn’t get, if she had to wait ‘til christmas day to give haley her ‘bought with so much love’ gift. “PLEASE? think about how bad wrapping paper is for the environment, and how much longer you’ll have to wait - those two points in their own right are enough to warrant having it now, right?”

“Neither can I...” they muttered. It wasn’t that Stevie hated Hals. They’d tried to hate Hals at first after the break up. They were certainly angry. Hurt. Frustrated. But they didn’t hate her. They couldn’t. But they did tend to avoid her these days. “But you brought it up.”

“You don’t think this is too much?” Lian asks as she comes out of the bathroom after she spent what felt like hours doing her hair.  She wants everything to be perfect, for more reasons than one, but she doesn’t have a party that often so it was special of course. She loves her aunt so of course she trusts her opinion as she’s standing in front of her with a smile spread across her features.

“Hey, sis.” Roy says as the door swings open, offering his little sister as wide a smile as he can manage. Truth be told he’s been worried about her. It had been a relief to know she wasn’t at the rally when everything went done, and he trusts that Dinah would’ve checked in on her - and Oliver, he guesses - but once the dust of her parents had settled he needed to make sure for himself that she was truly okay.

He leans down to give her a tight hug, squeezing her gently and holding her for a moment before letting go and straightening up again. “Sorry I took so long, I wanted to make sure I had a clear path before coming in and checking on you.” There’s the unspoken topic there that he and Oliver still aren’t on good terms, but that’s nothing new really. Right now, Hals is his priority. “Can I come in?”

their friendship is an unlikely one, considering the circles they each run in. every so often bea would make nice with someone who far too good for her, only to let them down later on. like the universe was telling her she was aiming too high, reaching too far out of her league. ❝ was it ever that mysterious in the first place ? ❞ that is, if bea were a woman who believed in anything. the universe wasn’t mysterious, there was no “ bigger picture ”. shes was just a gotham mob rat, and as much as she enjoyed talking to haley, she was sure a time would come when bea would that friendship beyond repair, and then they’d each move on with their lives.

the painful irony of her getting ready early in the morning with Haley for an anti-registration rally isn’t lost on the soldier. she tries to ignore this special brand of guilt popping up today especially...but the look of pure joy on her roommate’s face eventually broke her.

“Hals, fuck, stop, hang on, we gotta talk,” she sighs and sits on the arm of their couch, running a hand through her hair in exasperation at herself. she had the worst timing, clearly, but it was time to let the floodgates open.  [ @flightlessbvrd ]

       at her eldest daughter’s words, dinah sighed through her nose. fingers pressed a button upon her phone, shutting its screen off. it would be silly to pretend that she wasn’t agitated, seeing as her children often knew her emotions better than she knew herself. maybe when they were younger, she could get away with that. but even then, they proved their intelligence quickly. it produced a soft smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes.

      ❝ i’m not mad. just. . . irritated. i know that oliver and roy in the same place, even as big as paragon is, has brought tensions to the family that i haven’t seen in years. but i’m not oliver’s wife anymore, and i’m certainly not in control of roy ── even when he was younger. it just feels like sometimes my voice isn’t heard. ❞
