¹⁾ they’re undercover as a married couple, and as such need to act like one

²⁾ there’s technically two beds available, but it’s freezing cold and everybody knows body heat works best

³⁾ it’s a camping trip, and one character’s forgotten their sleeping bag

⁴⁾ a character goes to their friend’s house after an emotional upheaval in search of comfort, and ends up staying the night - but refuses to kick the homeowner out of their own bed, resulting in the two of them sharing it

⁵⁾ in a roommate scenario, one character’s bedroom has been rendered unusable - and with the couch being unsustainable in the long run, they proffer sharing the one remaining bed as a solution

⁶⁾ there are two beds, but only one blanket

⁷⁾ a character’s taken ill, and the other party worries too much to leave them alone for even a minute

⁸⁾ in a fit of anger after a mission gone wrong, both characters sleep in the only available bed because no one was chivalrous to offer to take the floor

⁹⁾ a character’s had a nightmare, and needs company to feel safe enough to go back to sleep

¹⁰⁾ the weather takes a tumultuous turn, meaning a late night hangout has to turn into a sleepover when a character gets stranded there for the night

¹¹⁾ it’s a late night at work and when they both grow too tired to continue on, the only option is the lone office couch

¹²⁾ a threat’s been made against one/all character(s) involved, and so under the guise of safety in numbers it’s deemed safest if they stay together - everywhere

¹³⁾ one character joins the other for a late-night conversation, and ends up getting comfortable in their bed next to them - evidently too comfortable, as the char in bed falls asleep on the visitor and effectively traps them there

¹⁴⁾ there’s no bed in the shoddy refuge they’ve found after things went sideways, so when it comes time to sleep the only real choice is to stay close together

in which Character A knows that Character B was previously in an abusive relationship, A will do everything to make sure that B is comfortable. they don’t want to be touched right now? B isn’t going to push it. they do want to be touched right now? B will absolutely give them all the love and attention they deserve.

in which Character A doesn’t know that Character B was previously in an abusive relationship. it doesn’t take A long to notice that something is wrong with A, hugs and even hand-holding makes them uncomfortable. communication is key between them. they sit down and talk about it and A is completely supportive and willing to help.

“you know that i won’t hurt you, right?”

“i’m never going to let anything like that happen to you again. ever.”

for a while they just sit in each other’s company while watching tv or reading.

eventually they work up from linking pinkie fingers to full cuddles. it takes a while and is very difficult for B to get used to and know that they are safe, but A is patient with them and they are learning together.

“can i have a hug.” B asks one day. it shocks A so much that they think it’s a joke at first. once they realise that B isn’t joking they slowly wrap their arms around them, letting B adjust to the feeling.

“Are you okay? You look a little…” “I’m fine!”

A tries to hide their blush from B by turning their head away, but the latter doesn’t let them.

“I can’t help it (when you look at me like that).”

“Are you actually blushing?” “No! Shut up.”

“You, uhh… You… Sorry. I didn’t mean to make you… I mean…”

A smiles fondly when B starts to blush and draws them closer, allowing them to hide in their embrace.

“Awww. Did I fluster you?”

“This never happened, do you understand?! If I find out you mentioned this to anyone, I’ll…”

It appears A made B blush, and in response their own cheeks heat up.
