Did you know mantises fluoresce in uv light? This lovely lady was living in my vegetable garden last year. This is what she looks like in the daylight:

Pistils of dandelion were collected and made into slide samples. Different fluorescence patterns of its parts were observed using confocal microscopy.

Xystocheir dissecta, a species of flat-backed millipede found only in California. They’re fairly common in forest litter around the Bay Area and show up very well with a black light at night. Like many flat-backed millipedes, they produce hydrogen cyanide as a chemical defense against predators.
