Shab-e-intezaar

Oneshot inspired by this word prompt by @arshifiesta
The night of awaiting
_________
The streetlight burned as dusk coiled around the city of Lucknow. Like a bunch of princes to their favourite courtesan, a flutter of moths were drawn to the light.
Khushi stifled a smile at the impish comparison, as she hurried along the narrow roads of Lakshmi Nagar.
———
“Amma, I am home” , she said with flourish, dropping her handbag onto the chair and her jootis kicked off elegantly over the mat.
“Hmm”, came the buzz of mild acknowledgment from Garima Gupta.
Khushi huffed out a breath in mock exasperation.
“What is there in this god forsaken serial that I can’t get you to give your eyes a break for a second? The same old rich man- poor girl nonsense!”
“Hush Khushi!”
She tied her hair into a quick knot, and left for her evening bath, leaving her mother with her precious LED box.
———
“You just have to cook the chapatis baccha, I have made the curry” Garima smiled fondly as Khushi stood bent over the stove.
“Aah! AD break I assume?” She smirked.
“Of course!” Garima laughed, “Love stories…..”
Khushi spun around at her mother’s change of tone.
“They remind me of what your father and I shared”, her eyes misty with memories.
“Lies” Khushi smiled , “Papa wasn’t rich”
“He was rich in his heart! Joke all you want, but one day you’ll realise what I am talking about Khushi. So many proposals have come your way, but I have rejected them for I know that you deserve to marry for love”
“What rubbish! I’ll marry someone who mints money!”
“We’ll see”
And with that Garima was off to the living room again.
If she had paused, she would have seen the tell tale signs of a lie on her daughter’s face. The flushing of cheeks, the biting of lip and the nervous gesture of hands.
Khushi Kumari Gupta was in love.
————
She laid the fresh bed sheet over her mattress, humming an old Bollywood tune. Her room was set in muted tones of pink. She was a magpie in all essence. Her nani’s jewellery, her papa’s books and all the gifts she had ever received, were all stored beautifully in this room.
Her parents had worked hard over the years to buy this flat in the heart of Lucknow. Her papa’s death in that fatal car accident years ago didn’t dim her mother’s will to work. And so Khushi grew up with her mother as the headmaster of a government school, with ambitions of being a teacher herself.
She placed the test papers she had taken pains to correct in a file, and pushed them away on her desk with a sigh of relief.
“Semester exams done!” She said out loud to herself.
Switching off the lamp, she stood up and plunged the room into dimness.
With the strategy of a woman in love, she grabbed a book from her bedside table and walked with measured leisure to the ornate window.
The moon hid behind the clouds as she searched for him. Her fingers flipped the pages, hoping its flutter would bring him to his window. The window framing the wall neighbouring hers.
And then like the bride waiting for the moon on her first fasting, she was assuaged as the clouds cleared and the moon lit up his handsome face, shining the harsh lines of him into light.
“Arnav”, she breathed out as if parched from his thirst. Thirst of the man who had stolen her dreams, her heart and her peace.
“How were the semester papers? By your expression I can guess you are glad to be rid of them”, he smirked wickedly.
“Laugh all you want, but at least I don’t sit hunched over a computer all day!”, she said tongue in cheek.
He smiled, hands lifted up in defeat.
“I am a verified corporate slave”
He took a sip from his cup, his eyes holding her captive.
“Beautiful night”
She shook her head, “You say that every night”
“And I mean it every night”, he insisted, his voice ringing against the dark.
She cleared her throat, “So the heroine and hero got stuck in a lift today”
He chuckled, “I am amused how Garima aunty suffers this everyday”
“Tell that to her,” she grinned.
“That her favourite show lacks originality? No way!”
“It’s cliche! But it works…”
Arnav set his cup aside, resting his forearm on the ledge, leaning over.
“They sell dreams don’t they? We wait all our lives. Some live and lose. But they sell our dreams to us..”
Khushi sighed, “Making the wait bearable?”
“Agonising” his whisper lit up her night.
—————
The staff room was not unaffected by the lazy afternoon. The fan whirred in the corner as the two friends sat hunched together.
“Her wedding was simply stunning! Her dad spent so much.”
She looked on, bored as Payal recounted their colleague’s wedding last week. She had missed it due to her cousin’s wedding the same day.
“Payal! What about the groom? Does he suit Sheetal?”
“Well….he is balding. And he has a paunch. But that won’t matter in America would it?”
“Sheetal had a poster of Salman on her wall”, Khushi mumbled.
“So what Khushi? Life is not a movie. No one is going to get a Salman or Shah rukh. We are going to get nice men with heavy pockets”
“Akash is certainly not just a nice man” she smirked.
Payal playfully smacked her hand, before settling down despondently.
“His mother doesn’t approve.”
“Does that matter? He is willing to fight anyone for you. He got that apartment near the junction-“
“Yes! But I didn’t want him to give up his family. I want him to have everything he wants”
Khushi closed her hand over Payal’s fist.
“He loves you. And if a few sacrifices are what life demands from him, that’s okay. Because how happy he’ll be with you matters the most!”
She smiled, her eyes filled with unshed tears.
“Thank you Khush”, she choked out.
————-
She stood by her window, gazing out at his closed one, her hand drying her waist length hair gently.
Payal had texted her this morning, asking her to be one of the witnesses for their registered marriage.
It was happening. After all the hardships, Akash was finally marrying Payal. She couldn’t be more happier for the two of them.
Raizadas were going to lose another son, she thought. Arnav had left the grandiose of Sheesh Mahal two years ago, to live in this humble settlement.
“Just exhausted, Khushi. They wanted to control everything. My life, my soul, my very breath”
She recalled his words with a pang. He had to suffer so much, before he could finally break free.
And now Akash…..
Walking over to her almirah, she looked for her favourite Anarkali.
White. For purity. For innocence. For new beginnings.
For Akash and Payal.
She was happy for them. Why wouldn’t she be? She had been a Cupid to their story, nonetheless.
But when her gaze settled on the neighbouring window, she felt a twinge of anxiety. She hadn’t revealed her own heart to Arnav, let alone expect him to return her love.
She had her share of sleepless nights, worrying that any day now, he will bring home a woman. Her heart will break. And all those unplayed heartbreak CDs in her possession will finally get a chance to echo in her room.
Slipping on a pair of jhumkas, Khushi draped a dupatta over her and walked out to say goodbye to her mother.
———-
“Arnav!”
She couldn’t believe her eyes. Empty tea cups rested on the coffee table. Her mother greeted her with a soft, serene smile.
“Amma-“
“Isn’t it time? Payal will be waiting” , her mother interrupted.
“But-“ , she frowned.
“After all, you'll be late when you reach there”, she turned back to Arnav, “I think you should stay there tonight beta”
“The register office is fifteen minutes from here!”
“We are going to Agra. Did you think the Raizadas would let Akash get married here?”
She stared at him. Unsure of the change in plans, of this tea with her mother, unsure of him and the way he was looking at her.
“It’s a four hour car ride Khushi, you better leave now!” Her mother was now on her feet, almost pushing her daughter out of the door.
“Shall we?”
Her hand slid into his.
Agra it is.
————
“Please sign here” the grumpy man mumbled.
She looked on as Akash’s two colleagues signed the paper.
“Khushi”, Arnav placed a hand on her waist, pushing her forward.
She took the pen in her hand, muttering a prayer under her breath before noting down her signature.
Joy and claps filled the air as the couple was pronounced husband and wife.
Khushi looked on with tears in her eyes and a smile on her face, as Akash kissed Payal softly, ignoring the registrar’s gasp of outrage.
Love had won again.
————-
She was a romantic. She had always been. Even when she had first visited the Taj Mahal with her mother at the young age of ten, she had found her heart aching at the majestic symbol of love. Shah Jahan’s number of wives or his harem didn’t matter. There was love that thrived beyond graves, and that’s all that mattered.
Khushi soaked in the beauty the monument was, under the cover of the night. Wrapping her dupatta, firmly around her shoulders, she walked beside Arnav, who seemed so deep in thought, she almost felt jealous.
“I never thought it could be more beautiful”, she broke through the silence.
“You love the nights, not surprising”, Arnav smiled.
Rows of trees lined their path, the distant lights illuminated their footsteps, as the breeze swayed.
“Shab-e-intezaar”, he said out loud.
“Shab-e-intezaar? What are you waiting for?”, she asked, puzzled.
He smiled in that mysterious way of his.
Her breath left her as he caught her wrist and pulled her against him. Wide eyed, she looked up at him, pure shock and pleasure running through her whole being.
“This”, he whispered, before his mouth came down on hers.
His lips were unbearably soft. The slight way he moved against her was driving her crazy. Something primitive rose within her, as her hand clutched his shirt, pressing herself against him firmly.
He was quick to know her. Entangling her within his arms, he tightened his hold.
Breathless she broke away, resting her head against his. She felt his warmth on her nose, before her head was tilted up.
“I love you Khushi”, he kissed her again.
Khushi’s hand tightened on his wrist.
“I love you too”, she whispered back.
Arnav broke into a delicious smile. Holding her hand he stepped away.
Ignoring the sudden bout of shyness flooding her, she held his eyes as if her life depended on it.
He bent down on one knee.
“Happiness found me, while I was leaning against my bedroom window one night. I still thank whatever gods are up there, who brought me to you, Khushi. I am in love with you. With your spirit, your heart, your eyes. I am just a man in love with you”, his voice wavered at the end.
She swallowed thickly, her vision blurring with emotion.
“With the blessings of Garima aunty”, he cracked a wry grin, “I would like to ask you if you want to be my wife? Spend the rest of our lives, no longer separated by walls and windows?”
“I will”, she let out a sob.
She crashed into him, arms entwining around him as he almost tumbled onto the ground.
His laughter filled her ears, and she glanced up at the beautiful Taj Mahal, framed by their night.
Love had found them. After a long shab-e-intezaar.

Chapter Seven

Chapter Six> < > Epilogue
Stray dogs lazed around, with the sun’s rays kissing them gently. A lone car drove by.
Hari Prakash yawned discreetly.
Khushi knew he had a barrage of questions for her. After all, she had woken him up to drive her an hour before the actual timing!
But she couldn’t tell him what even she didn’t know yet….
Even now, she knew it was a gamble to assume Arnav would be there just because Aman mentioned once that he always liked to be in the office before his employees.
What an odd man!
——————
Her cold hands knocked on his cabin door.
“Come in, Aman “
Hesitating at that, Khushi took another moment before going in.
He sat hunched over a piece of paper, while a bunch of files lay haphazardly around him.
A strand of hair marred his forehead, his eyes scrunched with focus.
He finally looked up, dropping his pen as he stood up.
“Khushi?”
“I wanted to ask you about yesterday “
He bit his lip and she resisted the urge to blush at the action.
“So Miss Gupta. You are here an hour early because you wanted to ask me about….?”
“Yesterday “ she repeated innocently.
“What about it?” He pushed the files aside.
“You left me without saying a word-“
“I did say a word”
“ ‘No’ doesn't count!” She almost scolded before seeing the smirk on his face.
Realising he was wearing her thin, he put up his hands in surrender.
“Okay, I admit I was not expecting the news”
“And what about dinner?”
“Your father got the deal, didn’t he tell you?” He stepped around his table and walked up to her.
“So you and your dad came to dinner to celebrate the deal?” She frowned.
“Smart girl, “ he whispered.
“How dare y-?”
He cut her off with an arm around her waist as she was pulled up against him.
“What are you doing?”she gasped.
“What I have been wanting to do since you sat there sipping whisky, dancing and wearing that dress which made me want to rip it right off you”
His husky whisper made her shiver.
“Arnav” she moaned as he pulled her closer.
“Khushi” he whispered as his nose nudged hers.
Their eyes caught each other for a moment . A moment before he kissed her.
She clutched his shirt as he kissed her softly. Tenderly. Her knees trembled. Her hands shook with desire. She parted her lips, and he thrust in letting his tongue twirl around hers.
Too much. This was too much.
Sensing her need to breathe , he let her lips go. But there was no respite as he kissed hotly down her throat. She felt feverish with lust when his hand wrapped around her breast.
“God” she called out.
“Arnav “ he corrected cheekily.
He claimed her lips again. Another swift kiss later, they held each other as their breathing calmed.
“Breakfast?”he grinned.
——————
The majestic view of Lucknow glittered, as Khushi sat on the beautiful terrace of an English breakfast place. They seemed to be the only customers this early in the morning.
She wondered vaguely about Arnav vanishing as soon as he drove them here.
What’s taking him so long?
She looked around again, smiling when she caught sight of him.
“Where have you been?”
“Oh, Aman called for something “
The waiter set down the pancakes and bowls of banana yoghurt.
Arnav grabbed the teapot and started pouring it into her cup, his hands trembling slightly.
“Arnav?”
His eyes melted something in her. She was used to the devilish glint in them. This new vulnerability he was unravelling for her to see, made her heart flutter.
“Khushi I….” He looked around nervously.
He shuffled his pocket before he set something on the table.
A flask of whiskey. Her flask of whisky.
She looked at him in disbelief, as he smiled helplessly.
“I stole for the first time in my life because of you Khushi Gupta “
He gently took her hands in his own.
“ I meant what I said….You had me smitten the moment I saw you”
Khushi didn’t know what to say. He was saying what she had wished deep in her heart for him to feel. The desire for him had grown even without her realising.
“I had confided in my father to ask the Guptas for your hand in marriage”
“What?!” She felt a strange joy in the pit of her stomach.
“Yes Khushi. But he wanted me to wait because he felt your family would feel pressured. You know because of the new venture?......I had to convince myself to wait, and yet when you came that day all, looking all guilty…”
“You took the hotel projects away from the Khandelwals?”
“It was never theirs” he flashed her a sardonic smile.
“My brother-in-law, Shyam leaked the false news to the media. He knew dad hates to be known as someone unsure of his decision. So he thought if it was announced that Rocky had the contract, we would be forced to give him the contract!”
“Your sister knew?”
“Of course she did” bitterness clouding his voice.
“She values that crook of her husband more than dad”
“I am sorry Arnav “
“It’s fine Khushi. If Di wants to be with him, I am no one to interfere. She is an adult after all,”
“I guess” she sighed.
“Now there’s no reason to wait”
“To wait?”
Arnav stood up, his face set in tense lines.
He kneeled down, his hands holding a velvet box.
Khushi gasped.
He opened the box to reveal the most beautiful diamond encrusted in a gleaming gold band.
Her eyes filled with tears, as she raised a trembling hand to her lips.
“Khushi Gupta, wise men say only fools rush in, but I can’t help falling in love with you!”
She giggled, “Elvis Presley! Really?”
He smiled.
“You are an orphic mystique, Khushi. The moment I saw you, I felt…something beyond me. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you please do the honour of marrying me?”

Arshi FF: Tere Bin - Chapter 7
Read from the beginning | Chapter 6
Chapter 7: Mehrama (listen while reading)
Arnav
Khushi was silent as he pulled out into the road. The confines of the car magnified her floral scent. His memory had not done it justice.
“Where am I going?” he asked as they approached a junction with a much busier road.
“There’s a place I can catch another auto there,” she gestured vaguely to the right. “Just drop me off.”
Arnav rejected the idea after a brief consideration — he was not going to leave her alone at night. He turned towards the river.
“I said I’ll drop you home. Just tell me where to go.”
“I don’t need your help!”
“What was it you said to me? Your family worries about you. Your Jiji cries when you’re late. Think about them.”
A necessary cruelty, he told himself as she fell silent.
He took a bend slightly too fast, felt the force push him towards the centre console. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Khushi press against her door as she clutched the handle for support.
She wasn’t wearing her seat belt.
“Put your belt on,” he snapped, concentrating on finding a way back over the river.
When he didn’t hear the click of her belt a few seconds later, he flicked his eyes in her direction to find her struggling with it. Irritation burned hot and bright in his chest as he pulled over with a curse. She startled as he unsnapped his belt. His pulse stuttered as he noticed the sheen of tears.
Damn it. Why do I always make her cry?
He leaned over her, yanking the seat belt across her body as he spoke. “It’s late. You’re alone. But I can turn around if you really want.”
She seemed to have stopped breathing altogether. A hunger awoke under his exasperation, turning his glare into something else as his fingers tried to linger. He clicked the belt into place.
“No,” Khushi voice trembled as he eased back into his seat. “Keep taking this road. Turn towards the market where the shop is.”
“You live near the shop?” he rejoined traffic smoothly.
“Behind it. It’s called G-Gomti Sadan.”
He remembered enough about Lucknow’s roads to guess they were twenty minutes away.
Not long enough.
He slowed, noting the tension uncoil from Khushi’s body as he did so, and felt irrationally angry at her fear.
As if I’d let anything happen to her.
The unwelcome memory of her fall from his cabin’s window rose to the surface of his mind.
“What were you doing out here?” he asked to distract himself.
“I … uhh … I was visiting a clinic.”
“At night?”
“N-no. It was afternoon when I got there but there was a misunderstanding about Babu— about something … and now I’m late.”
Khushi gazed out her window, “Amma will be worried.”
“Don't you have a phone?” his own worry sharpened his words. “Do you want me to call someone for you?”
“You broke my phone, remember? I was using Babu-ji’s but the battery died.”
The way she spoke — words glum and tone resigned — prompted him to study her at the next traffic light. Her shoulders were drooped, her eyes fixed on the twist and untwist of her hands in her lap.
A hollow opened somewhere in the region of his chest. He’d been thinking of her father in the abstract — the illness something to be handled and fixed — but now it dawned on him that she might be on the verge of losing a parent.
Her adoptive father, he recalled the gossiping women. She’s gone through this before.
“Khushi …” his tone was gentle. “Are you alright?”
She twisted in her seat, her mouth falling open, and he was surprised to see that her cheeks were dry. “I … yes … I’m fine.”
The jut of her chin reminded him of Teej.
“Have you eaten?” he asked suddenly.
“No.”
He swung onto a side-street without a word, heading towards a late-night cafe he knew and liked. Predictably, Khushi objected.
“Where are you going? You said you would take me home!”
“I’ll take you somewhere to eat first.”
“No!”
She reached out, maybe to place her hand on his arm, but faltered before making contact.
He pushed aside his disappointment.
Not yet. Just a few more minutes.
“I don’t want you to faint on me again,” his words were clipped.
Khushi turned away with a huff, crossing her arms across her chest as she mumbled something. He caught the words “Laad Governor”. His question died on his lips as she squealed and pointed to something on the other side of the road.
“Gol gappe! Let’s go there.”
Her eyes were bright, her smile wide in childish delight. Without a word, he found a place to turn around and parked near the stall she’d pointed to.
She was out of the car in a flash, rounding the front to speak to the vendor. When Arnav reached her, the owner was already smiling at Khushi’s enthusiasm and letting her taste his wares for free. She popped one into her mouth, eyes closed in ecstasy as she savoured the taste.
And he forgot his own name.
Recovering himself with a small cough as she opened her eyes, he bought two servings.
“You don’t have to …” the beginnings of her protest faded away as he walked off with both.
He felt his lips curve in amusement as Khushi stared after him and only called her name when he reached the car.
“What?” her irritation was clear in her tone.
“You don’t want to eat?”
She was still scowling when she joined him. He passed some over, watching as she used the bonnet of the car as a table. She ate two pieces before looking up at him.
“Aren’t you going to eat?”
“No.”
Shrugging, Khushi went back to her plate. When she was done, he silently handed her the second, ignoring her confused outburst. She ate slowly, pausing often to glance up at him, but her thoughts remained a mystery.
His own words kept getting lost on the way to his tongue.
“Get in,” he inclined his head towards the passenger side once she’d eaten it all.
Khushi stepped around him with a nod. Her shoe slipped on the loose gravel, and she reached out with a yelp. He caught her on instinct, his hands wrapping around her waist as she clutched his arm. The slight breeze fluttered her hair around her face as everything inside him seemed to come to a standstill.
Weeks of not seeing her, of barely hearing her voice, had turned him into a starving man. Arnav was hyper-aware of every point of contact between their bodies. His heart hammered, heat expanding from his chest to his fingertips. Khushi blinked at him slowly, her chest rising and falling as her breath came in sharp pants. He watched the way her eyes drifted to his lips before flicking back up. Her bottom lip trembled before she pulled it between her teeth. Barely stifling a groan, he dared to hold her closer, sliding a hand across her back. She tightened her grip on the sleeve of his jacket in response.
It felt like absolution.
The flow of time only restarted when she made to pull away. Releasing her with great reluctance — and wanting nothing more than to somehow prolong the fragile moment — he watched Khushi toy with the hem of her suit as she recovered her composure. It was only when she glanced downwards that he realised his hand was still in the air. He lowered it slowly, profoundly aware she was not his to hold.
In the car, their silence was only broken by her softly spoken directions as she led him to her home. She navigated him to a narrow alley, and they reached a large sign that proclaimed they’d reached Gomti Sadan too soon.
Arnav parked the car, his mind busily generating ways to convince her to stay another minute or two.
She spoke before he could. “ I … I mean … th-thank you.”
He acknowledged her with a nod. “Do you want me to drop you inside?”
“You don’t have to—”
“—I didn’t have to do any of the things I did tonight,” he said simply.
Another silence.
It shouldn’t be this hard.
But it was. Not for the first time, he wondered how things would be between them if their beginning been completely different. Gentler.
Would we get along?
Would she say my name?
A part of him understood that Khushi was unaware of just how profoundly things had changed for him. He had no name for what he wanted, only the knowledge that he burned with wanting it. But her heart and mind lingered at the guesthouse, unable to process the rescue she’d all but given up on while her father remained ill.
The gates to the residence opened, revealing a blue-clad figure that bent to get a better look inside the car. Arnav realised his time was up.
“Khushi,” he spoke moments before she opened her door. “I have an idea.”
She glanced back at him as her sister approached, “What?”
“Well, it’s just that you like arguing so much, and we argue so often …”
The curiosity on her features morphed into outrage, but he continued nonetheless. Outside, her sister froze as she recognised him.
“… I think we should keep in touch.”
A speechless Khushi Kumari Gupta was a sight to behold.

It is intended to improve the efficiency and consistency of producing high-quality, high-performance apps for diverse platforms. Flutter course is popular because it offers a quick, exciting, modern approach to creating native mobile apps. If you are an experienced developer, you have another intriguing tool to test out. Complete the Flutter course to become a Flutter developer. By the end of this course, you will be able to use Flutter to design Android and iOS apps that seem native.
Here are the key components of a typical Flutter development course:
Introduction to Flutter: The course often begins with an overview of what Flutter is, its advantages, and the kind of applications you can build with it.
Setting Up Development Environment: Students are guided through the process of setting up their development environment, which usually involves installing Flutter and related tools like Dart, Android Studio, or Visual Studio Code.

Navigation: Navigating between different screens or pages in a mobile app is an essential feature. The course covers how to implement navigation within a Flutter app.
Fetching and Displaying Data: Most real-world apps need to fetch data from APIs and display it. Students learn how to make HTTP requests and display data using Flutter.
Database Integration: Some courses also introduce students to integrating local databases, such as SQLite, to store and manage data.
Testing and Debugging: Students are taught how to write tests for their Flutter apps and how to use debugging tools to identify and resolve issues.
Deployment: The course typically covers the process of building and deploying Flutter apps to different platforms, such as Android and iOS.

Buaji held the invite at arm’s length, her eyebrows scrunched up in a frown.
“I can’t believe that Naina is having an art show again!”
“That’s her job buaji,” Khushi flipped through the day’s newspaper.
“Oh, I’ll never understand them. You go alone this time”
“Now that I am engaged , you won’t bother?”, she teased.
“Shut up and eat your dinner!”, buaji hid a smile as she ruffled her hair.
The invite lay on the coffee table. Cream with silver embossed letters.
Kala invites you to an evening of ‘Sculpture under the stars’
———
Khushi knew Naina had outdone herself when she saw the parking of the gallery fill up upto its capacity.
Payal wasn’t kidding when she insisted Khushi ditch her car and hop into theirs. The show was already one for the books.
Music designed to incite images of Arabian nights and magic carpets greeted them, as Akash had whistled playfully, “Trust Naina to pull this off”
The sculptures were highlighted beautifully. The ceiling had swinging lights, which created such a beautiful play of lights- it had everyone gasping.
She decided to slip away when the third couple approached Akash and Payal , before they could reach the first display. There was only so much business talk she could take in a gallery ,screaming for an immersive experience.
It was beautiful. The music. The lights. The art.
She smiled as she drifted from one display of talent to another. They were all stunning. The attention to detail, rendering a feeling of disbelief over her.
The craftsmanship was amazing.
“Khushi!”Naina grinned,engulfing her in a hug.
“Your face tells me everything that you feel about this! Thank you”, she whispered into her ear.
Khushi giggled, “Hardly! You have done a fabulous job, Naina”
“Go on! I wouldn’t want to stall you”
———
And that’s how she found herself moving across the gallery, as if in her own world. Khushi could see the sculptor’s effort in each. It was the best Lucknow had witnessed so far.
It was when she was admiring the hands on a sculpture, that she felt it. A change. A glitch. Something in the air.
“You are reading it wrong”, his husky whisper set things into motion. That strange sensation in her belly, the goosebumps on her arm, the way her eyes fluttered shut and her lips parted. She was ensnared by him.
Gathering her scattered senses, Khush turned, “Meaning?”
“You are moving from art to art, without seeing it.”
“Oh really? I happen to understand the beauty of their talent. They all are so realistic”
“You see the realistic structure, but you don’t see the realism”, Arnav smiled softly, leaning away from her.
“What does that mean?”
He clocked his head to the sculpture she was observing, “What do you see in this one?”
Khushi turned her back to him.
“These are torsos of a man and a woman. He is holding her in his arms.”
He moved closer behind her,”And?”
“The veins on the hands are so..so real. As if this was a picture”
“You don’t see the story Khushi?”
“What?”, she whispered back.
“He is a man ,Khushi. You see the grip he is holding her with? That’s a man who’s holding his woman in place. The garment she is draped in has slipped away partially. But it still conceals her. As if telling about her state of mind. She wants this, but something holds her back-“
“Holds her back?”,she was aware. Aware that her voice had dimmed down to a purr. Aware of his warmth pooling around her back. Aware of his voice which seemed to promise to take her to heaven and back.
“Overwhelming. These emotions…can be too much to handle. But she’s not moving away. She craves it as much as the man. Or maybe…”
She turned to face him again, unaware of the blush in her cheeks and glint in her eyes.
“Maybe?”
He smirked, leaning forward, “Maybe I am just getting over my head and it is really just a pair of torsos”
She couldn’t help it. Later she would think to herself,
Which woman could?
She covered the distance between them in a blink and kissed him softly. A kiss as innocent as her.
Standing on her tiptoes, Khushi clutched the lapels of his jacket.
Arnav pulled away, cursing under his breath.
And just when she thought she had acted out of the bounds of propriety, he slipped his hand into hers and was dragging her behind the nearest copper door leading into a narrow, dim lit hallway.
Cupping her neck, he tilted her jaw upwards.
“Khushi”
He murmured, before plunging into her mouth.
She moaned in surprise as he kept up the pace. His tongue slipped in to pull hers into the play of their desires.
His thumb caressed her cheek the next moment, proving to be her undoing.
Imitating him, she kissed him back. Pouncing on his lips, just like the way he did to hers, Khushi elicited a groan from him.
Her back hit the wall, as she realised he had pinned her.
A thrill ran through her as he bit her lip, before laving it with his affection.
When they finally broke away, breathing hard , she marveled at the truth.
Yes. Yes, it was overwhelming. Yes ,something did hold her back. And that was what everything would lead up to. What did she really know about sex?
And Arnav? The way he kissed, his age and experience? She didn’t know what that meant for her. What did she even possess in that department compared to his previous partners? Compared to Lavanya Kashyap?
Suddenly, the prospect of marriage with this Adonis bubbled up insecurities within her, she didn’t even know she had.
———
“Where were you?”, Payal asked with a pointed look.
“Er..just looking around”
“Khushi”, Payal shook her head,”Remember to reapply lipgloss after every rendezvous in the future”
Her sister winked, even as she stilled in shock.
“It’s okay, Khush! You’ll learn”
Groaning internally, she looked away.
Her eyes clashed with Arnav as he sipped amber liquid from a whiskey glass. Leaning against the wall, he was surrounded by men and women of his stature. All engrossed in shop talk.
For a moment, he seemed just like a mind reader. His gaze resembled the blaze of a fire. And she was in its path.
But Khushi didn’t know if she had the armour to protect herself from incineration

Arshi FF: Tere Bin - Chapter 5
Read from the beginning | Chapter 4
Chapter 5: Saawre (listen while reading)
Arnav
On Saturday evening, following a disaster of a meeting with the Singh family which Arnav had walked out of not twenty minutes after they’d arrived, Di joined him at the poolside. It was a habit they always fell into whenever she stayed in Shantivan. Hari Prakash, on her heels, carried a tray with tea and snacks.
“Nani complained that I made you a sandwich today,” she commented when they were alone. “She thinks I should’ve made you puri instead.
“Nani complains about everything these days.”
He held the cups while she poured the tea.
“That’s not fair, Chhote, you’re not exactly giving her a chance. Why did you just walk away today?”
He handed her a cup, “Because it’s a waste of time. I don’t want to get married, and I certainly don’t want to marry someone she chooses for me.”
“Is that the problem?” Di arched an eyebrow. “No matter how good the girl is, you’ll reject her because someone else chose her?”
Rebellion flared, “Yes.”
She narrowed her eyes at him over her cup. He sipped his tea.
“Chhote, what do you want from life? You broke up with Lavanya and now you don’t want us to find someone for you.”
A flash of memory — Khushi’s mouth shaping his name. He pushed it away. “I don’t want these things, Di. I’m happy with the way my life is.”
Di watched the night sky in the silence that followed, and he found himself following suit. A shooting star streaked across the inky black, inciting a gasp from his sister. He looked over to find her grinning.
“Relax, Di,” he rolled his eyes. “It’s just a shooting star. No need to get so happy.”
“Be quiet!” her smile didn’t wane.
Arnav stretched for his phone — Aman had arranged for a new one immediately — but Di reached over to cover his eyes, “Quick, wish for something.”
I wonder if Khushi believes in making wishes on shooting stars.
His hand, on its way to remove Di’s, fluttered down into his lap at that thought. Khushi’s face swam into focus behind his eyelids. Her wide-eyed stare when he’d fed Lavanya on Teej. The tremble of her body as he’d held her in the rain.
“You don’t want to see my face? Then be happy. Because I’m going away from you forever. I’m returning to Lucknow. Forever.”
He removed his sister’s hand with a gentleness that belied the turmoil in his heart.
“Di I don’t want anything. Nor do I need to ask anyone for anything. I don’t believe in these things. What will a dying star give me anyway? If it really had the power to grant wishes, then it would’ve made a wish for itself.”
By the time he finished, Di’s eyes had dimmed and her mouth had drooped.
“It’s not right that you should push everyone away. See what I have with your Jija-ji? I want that for you.”
“Di, please,” he held up a hand to make her stop.
“These decisions aren’t taken with the mind, they’re taken with the heart.”
“I don’t make decisions based on emotions.”
“But love starts with the heart,” she countered. “You don’t make moves and countermoves, you don’t weigh your options.”
A sense of disquiet rose in his heart. Di took advantage of his silence to hammer her point home.
“Love just happens. When you see her, you won’t want to look away …”
Khushi in red at the photoshoot. A look that had turned into something else.
“… if she’s sad, then you can’t take pleasure in anything …”
Khushi’s tears in the storeroom, each one cutting through him until he’d broken down the door in an effort to make her stop.
“… the mere thought of being away from her upsets you.”
“You hate me, don’t you? Hate my lack of status? You don’t want to see my face? Then be happy. Because I’m going away from you forever. I’m returning to Lucknow. Forever.”
Arnav swallowed against the tightening in his chest. “Di, I don’t want to waste time on this nonsense.”
“It’s not nonsense,” Di paused in the act of selecting something to nibble on, “and one day, you’ll enjoy spending time on these things.”
He didn’t bother to argue with the finality in her tone.
#####
He retreated to the office the next day, anything to avoid the taunts his grandmother threw at him in every waking moment. In the privacy of his cabin, Arnav dialled a now-familiar number. Anticipation tightened his muscles and quickened his pulse. Khushi had not answered since that first time. Often, he cut the call before it could ring more than once. The few times he hadn’t, a part of him aching to hear her voice, either the phone had rung and rung until he’d abandoned the effort or her family picked up. Her father on occasion, and once her aunt.
But today, a soft feminine voice answered before he registered that the call had connected.
“—ridiculous that you won’t answer the phone. Namaste. Saatvik Misthan Bhandar.”
Even the distortion of the phone line couldn’t convince him that it was Khushi.
Her sister, then.
He prepared to end the call, saying nothing, but the woman’s next words stopped him.
“Khushi, you can’t refuse to take orders on the phone,” her voice was muffled as if she’d placed her hand over the receiver
The answering words were even fainter, “I can’t! What if that Laad Governor calls again?”
What the—? What’s a Laad Governor?
“Why would he be calling here?”
“I still can’t believe he came to the shop. I’m telling you, Jiji, he called the other day. I’m sure of it.”
“You say someone called and said nothing? Bua-ji said the same thing happened to her. Maybe there’s something wrong with the phone line.”
Their voices became clearer, as though the obstruction had been removed.
“It was him, I just know it,” Khushi answered.
“Your mind has been stuck on him for weeks. Let it go. We’re back home now.”
“How can I, Jiji? Look what came today. A cheque! He’s taunting me! I was supposed to pay him back and instead he’s sending me money! How do you know he’s not going to call and say ‘Well, Khushi Kumari Gupta, you put on such big airs about paying me back and look at you now’. I have half a mind to send it back to him!”
“Don’t even think about it! You left that morning on your own two legs and he returned you unconscious and bleeding. That money is the least of what he owes you. And we need it, Babu-ji needs it. You know what the doctors said. Every cent matters now, Khushi.”
The call ended without warning.
He sat there for a long while, staring at the phone in his hand.

September Rain
Chapter Twenty Four
Read from the beginning
Previous<<
The printed papers fluttered as Khushi took them out of her pink folder with a flourish. She ignored Arnav’s raised eyebrow- an expression that seemed to be stuck on his face these days. She had to force herself to stop commenting on it- after all, she had expected him to shut her out completely.
“These, my dear “ she began in an exaggerated accent , “are your worksheets. They include everything the past ten years of questionnaire, contestants faced”
He visibly stilled for a moment.
“Well, I don’t think the library has that”
She grinned, lowering her voice down to a whisper, “I have my ways”
He only sighed, before grabbing the bunch of paper and began solving it. It was her turn to still.
She jolted herself to get her history book and start working on her assignments. She sat on another step on the rusty staircase of the dome. Their dome.
Her eyes flitted over to Arnav every now and then. She didn’t know if she was miffed or if it was disappointment that rushed through her as he ignored her. It had been like that for the past three weeks.
Khushi knew that what she and Arnav shared had seen too many years to fall apart now. But she didn’t know if Arnav would ever see her as his girlfriend again…Was this their future? Where he tolerates her for old times sake and she moons over him hopelessly?
He’ll probably move on first, she thought glumly. And just like that a sudden memory cropped up….
———
Summer had arrived. And just before they left for Lucknow, where their grandparents resided, Payal had invited some friends over.
Garima had left after presenting the girls some lemonade and watermelon slices, blissfully unaware of what Payal’s friend Sara was going through.
Khushi sat wide eyed, but quiet. She really didn’t want to be kicked out of the room. And a peep from her now, would ensure Payal di’s wrath upon her.
Sara’s soft sobs filled the room, leaving no room for any doubt for the state of her heartbreak.
“Sara, stop it. Veer was not worth it”
“Stop lying Payal “, her tears were relentless, “Veer lost interest in me”
“His loss!”
“No, you really don’t understand. He will get anyone he wants! And my heart will still want him”
Sara had collapsed into Payal’s arms then, unaware of the young girl who watched her in shock.
——
Sara Di had since then moved on. She was dating someone she had met in college.
Even at sixteen, Khushi knew that no one was invincible. Let alone a relationship. And even if she wasn’t ready to let go of what they shared, would Arnav? She hated that he was so logical. Always so pragmatic. Would they have the same fate as Veer-Sara?
“We should go”
She looked up from her book, startled out of her thoughts.
“It’s eight”, he said simply. His eyes offered her nothing. His lips refused to form that beautiful smile that made her knees weak. His arm didn’t extend to offer her a hand.
Forcing a smile on her face, Khushi stood up and packed her bag.
The walk back to her dorm had been uneventful. It was only her thoughts which echoed in her mind, not his voice.
“Goodnight , Arnav “ she bid him goodbye and headed into the green building without waiting for a reply.
———
“Arnav did it! He is the treasurer!”
Khushi gleamed at a visibly relieved Aman. They both knew how much he needed that win.
“He talked to Akash bhai yesterday. On the phone “
“What? What did he say?”
Aman sighed, “I don’t know honestly. But they are brothers. No wedge is that deep, you know?”
She nodded,still uneasy about Arnav.
“Let’s celebrate!”
——
“Arnav! Congrats!”
She hoped her hesitancy didn’t reach her tone. Her eyes had chased him as soon as she set foot into the cute milkshake shop, ‘Pop shack’ on the corner.
“Thanks, Khushi “, he nodded before turning back to NK, who was ribbing Mona, leaving the group in splits.
She took her seat beside Aman. She was tired of Arnav’s coldness. She had apologised for her role in his misery, and was done serving her sentence. Maybe everything happens for a good reason. She and him? They were better off as friends.
Her lips pursed around the straw, as she looked everywhere but him.
“Why did you pick this NK? I mean I love the milkshake, but you? Didn’t think so “ Aman chirped up, seeming lighter than he had in weeks.
“If you must know my friends, for the exchange programme….my cousin has been selected”
As a series of questions were aimed at NK, Khushi marvelled at how she had forgotten all about the exchange programme. Six months of exchanging a group of ten students with the other Woodsmith school in Ooty.
“So, who is it ,Khurana?”, Mona asked impatiently.
“Did someone call me?”
There at the entrance, stood a guy who knocked the wind out of the girls on the table.
NK rolled his eyes, “Guys, this is Varun. Shilpa maasi’s son”
Varun laughed, “You sound happy Nikhil bhai”
As Varun winked, Khushi immediately took a liking to him.
“So, Varun..I hope you are nothing like this cousin of yours”
“You should find out”, he quipped with a wink before catching Khushi’s eye.
“What’s your allotted house?”Payal asked.
“Oh, I am in green”, he drummed on the table, without breaking eye contact with Khushi.
She smiled, “Welcome to the Dehradun version of green then”
“Can’t wait”, he grinned.
