——————
- You didn’t tell anyone else on the grid other than Lance, obviously
- They were all surprised when it was announced that you were going to be missing Abu Dahbi
- Your oral surgeon only had that Wednesday free before Christmas
- …and let’s be real, your seat was secure, you weren’t going to win the WDC, and the constructors championship was locked in
- You would raise hell if you couldn’t enjoy the food around the holidays, so missing the last race it was
- You were exhausted from the season and appreciated the early break
- Lance just let it slip to the drivers on Friday a couple of hours after he got there
- You were sitting at home with Kimi, swollen and in pain all Friday
- “What do you mean she won’t be here? We have our presents for her” Fernando pouts
- Charles one day ships you cases of his gelato with a note telling you to feel better, he’s trying to get into the club for the gossip
- Lance gets invited to the club meeting to his surprise
- He assumes that they want to check in on you, despite them blowing up your phone
- No, he was VERY wrong
- Lance got roped into showing them videos of you on drugs
- Their favorite was the one of you when you first came out from being under
- “I’m married? Oh my god, I married Nico Hülkenberg? This is the best day of my life”
- You were sobbing tears of joy
- Nico was sent the video immediately, you gave him permission via text to post it the next day
- The second favorite was your favorite to laugh at
- You went on a massive rant about how Susie Wolff is a MILF and how you hoped Toto could fight because the female driver was your woman crush and you WILL have her
- Susie loved the video (George and Lewis sent it in the Mercedes family gc), Toto… not as much but he was amused
- You got a lot of fussing drivers on Facetime during the meeting
- You were loopy af from the painkillers and general exhaustion during it, it wasn’t your fault they called you late
- Kimi forced them to shut up and hang up so you could sleep
- Carlos joked about being relieved that there wasn’t another race for you to follow his trend during an interview
- You won the first race the next year
- Your phone started blowing up with messages on social media wishing you a quick recovery
- Most of the book club showed up to your home after Abu Dahbi, wanting to make a quick stop to check in before the break
- “Hello, wife,” Nico greets you when he sees you
- You joked you were about to file for divorce from Lance, who just sighed and went to get you a carton of LEC
- You had to film you opening your secret santa gift and send it to the F1 social team
- You got a quilt blanket that had a square for each book you read with the club since it started
- You actually started sobbing (you blamed the meds, even if you were actually crying)
- Lewis got the biggest hug ever, he enlisted help from Valtteri for all the books
- You forced them to cut the parts of you crying out of the video
- You got Logan an old iPod full of popular music (you hacked into his phone to check the genres he liked) from his childhood and now
- Obviously you added headphones and a couple chargers
- Logan used it all the time, he called you immediately to thank you
- You had the honors of choosing the first book over winter break
- You chose an F1 romance novel
- Boy oh boy were those meetings fun, just tearing up the book for its inaccuracy
- Daniel vowed to write an accurate one and sell it
- Spoiler Alert: he never did
- But Fernando did
- It was an international bestseller

My ideal GR war crime for tomorrow? My man does something funky with the car takes himself, max, lewis and perez from the race. Everyone is safe and healthy and we get a Lec-Sai-Bot podium.
I'm a romantic at heart and think everyone should win their home GP so I need checo on podium, but seconded. GR taking himself out and a trail of destruction is always the funniest version of events

FP3: Russell leads Hamilton as Mercedes claim 1-2 during final practice in Mexico City
George Russell edged out team mate Lewis Hamilton as Mercedes occupied the top two positions in Saturday’s final practice session for the Mexico City Grand Prix – sending a clear message to rivals Red Bull and Ferrari before qualifying. Russell produced a blistering time of 1m 18.399s – more than one-and-a-half seconds quicker than his Friday benchmark – in another bright and warm session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, ending up 0.144s clear of Hamilton. READ MORE: 5 things we learned from Friday practice at the Mexico City Grand Prix Max Verstappen and Red Bull were Mercedes’ nearest challengers, but the Dutchman – almost half a second off the pace – was left to rue a “terrible” first sector during an early lap on soft tyres and “the same problem again” at the start of his second run, which prompted him to back off, recharge and have another go. Behind, the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz took P4 and P6 respectively, sandwiching the other Red Bull of home favourite Sergio Perez, who sparked roars in the grandstands every time he completed a lap. 1 George Russell RUS Mercedes 1:18.399 2 Lewis Hamilton HAM Mercedes +0.144s 3 Max Verstappen VER Red Bull Racing +0.477s 4 Charles Leclerc LEC Ferrari +0.724s 5 Sergio Perez PER Red Bull Racing +0.842s As per the United States, FP3 marked a valuable final hour of track time ahead of qualifying, with five drivers sitting out first practice for rookies and second practice dedicated to further evaluation of Pirelli’s prototype 2023 tyres. Behind the Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari cars, Lando Norris was next up for McLaren, as Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas, AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda and the Williams of Alex Albon rounded out the top 10 positions. READ MORE: Vettel displays special helmet in tribute to Dietrich Mateschitz ahead of Mexico City GP Alpine pair Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso were 11th and 13th respectively, split by the second Alfa Romeo of Zhou Guanyu, with Daniel Ricciardo down in 14th, some eight-tenths slower than team mate Norris. Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri) and Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) were next on the timesheets, the former surviving a trip across the grass and the latter picking up a fine for pit lane speeding. Perez was cheered around his home circuit by the sell-out crowd during final practice Mick Schumacher had a wild spin through the esses in the early stages, but managed to keep it out of the wall to recover and take P17, three places and seven-tenths quicker than Haas team mate Kevin Magnussen, who is braced for an engine grid penalty. Nicholas Latifi wound up 18th in the other Williams, with Sebastian Vettel 19th, ahead of the aforementioned Magnussen, after complaining of a “shocking” balance at the wheel of his Aston Martin. How Fnatic Can Still Make 2023 Lec Winter Split Group Stage
Tumblr media
With just one round-robin standing between them and the league's "group stage," where only the top eight teams from each split advance, professional League of Legends teams can be eliminated from contention quicker than ever. Three teams are still trying to get into the back of the advancement table as we enter the final day of the Winter Split round robin. Fnatic, one of Europe’s most storied League teams, stands on the brink of being knocked out of group stage contention, which would mark the first time the organization has missed the playoffs of a split. Since 2013, Fnatic have made the playoffs of every LEC/EU LCS split, and should they lose today, they’d break a 10-year-long streak. https://twitter.com/FNATIC/status/1622338606307201026 Fnatic have taken their sweet time getting on the right foot this season, as they hold a record of 2-6 through the first eight games of the single round robin. With one game left to play, it’s win-or-go-home for the orange and black. Here’s how Fnatic can still make it to the Winter Split group stage. How Fnatic can qualify for LEC Winter Split group stage Heading into the final day of the Winter Split’s first stage, Fnatic still remain in control of their own destiny, and the second and third games on the LEC schedule today will be all that matters for Fnatic. The second game on today’s schedule—KOI vs. Astralis—is incredibly important for playoff seeding, as it will be guaranteed to gobble up one of the two remaining group stage slots. Those two teams sit with records of 3-5 coming into the final day of the Winter Split’s first stage, and the winner of that game will lock in a spot in the group stage, no questions asked. The third game today—Fnatic vs. SK Gaming—must obviously result in a Fnatic win for Fnatic to remain in the race. If Fnatic do win against SK, they’ll play a tiebreaker against the loser of KOI vs. Astralis. If they lose, they’ll go home empty-handed and the other team from the KOI/Astralis pairing will lock in the final seed. According to the LEC rulebook (rule 8.15.10), a tiebreaker game must be played for eighth place in the opening round robin of a split, regardless of who owns the head-to-head between the two teams. Fnatic won against KOI in week one but lost to Astralis yesterday. Today’s LEC action will begin at 11am CT with Team Heretics and Team BDS playing another match with playoff implications. hahahahahahahahaha love seb haters 💞 idk man, if lec wanted to win so badly, he could’ve had a better restart 🤷🏻‍♀️
Hmm. You mean he should have had a better restart after the team told him not to race Vettel at the restart?
Charles asks to get a higher engine mode but the team refuse him and then tell him twice just to bring the car to the end and nothing more.
Team radio during the safety car:
Charles: “I want everything, even engine mode.”
Ferrari: “Charles we need to uh... bring the car home. Charles, we need to manage the PU and bring the car home.”
Charles: “I won’t do anything stupid, it’s not my goal. I want us to finish 1-2. I think it’s not fair but yeah, this won’t change, I won’t be stupid, don’t worry.”
But sure, tell me more about how this race was a Vettel driving masterclass instead of the team switching them around and then holding Charles back.
Like, idk what to tell you, if Vettel wants to celebrate this weekend as some sort of redemption moment then he’s genuinely in a lot more trouble than I thought on the reality vs delusion front but hey, time will tell I suppose.

FP1:
Several drivers already cutting it very close to the barriers and ripping off advertising.
ZHO ripped off more than that and lost his end plate.
Which Charles promptly drove over and then got it stuck under his car, before a red flag could be called to clean up the debris.
Pierre was having PU issues and ended up being able to put in only a handful of laps
P1: HAM | P2: PIA | P3: RUS
Tumblr media
FP2: Charles was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 !!
Tumblr media
P1: LEC / P2: HAM / P3: ALO
Tumblr media
FP3:
Charles was again on fire and finished at the top of the list. I honestly can't recall anything else happening!
P1: LEC / P2: VER / P3: HAM
Tumblr media
Quali:
In Q1 plastic from advertising had wrapped around Charles's front wing end plate, messing up the aerodynamics and leading to much slower laps than anticipated.
Shock exit for PER as he placed P18 with only the Saubers behind him.
GAS managed to make it to Q3 much to Pierre's delight as he was shouting on the radio when told he was P5 in Q2. Teammate OCO ended in P11.
Bad luck seemed to follow Charles again as he reported something moved in the pedals, but he still took provisional pole.
Another super lap in the final stages of Q3 gave Charles his third pole in Monaco with an incredible 1:10:27.
Haas drivers HUL and MAG qualified P12 and P15 respectively, but ended up getting disqualified because they changed their wing and did no measure the height correctly. This meant a pit lane start for both of them.
Tumblr media
Petit's Race Notes:
Ah, where to begin? Oh, I know!
CHARLES LECLERC WINS THE 2024 MONACO GRAND PRIX!!!!!!
Tumblr media
Fingers and toes crossed at the start, but Charles was quick off the line. But behind him chaos unfolded...
Carlos bumped into Oscar and got himself a puncture which led to a yellow flag.
Next Checo and Kevin collided as K-Mag tried to squeeze through and Perez did not give him any space. PER hit the wall, got hit by MAG again, and then HUL also got hit for good measure.
The end result was that PER's car was reduced to the survival cell, debris was scattered all over the race track, both Haas's were out, and we had a 45-minute red flag for clean up and barrier repairs.
Meanwhile elsewhere on track OCO drove into GAS launching himself in the air and damaging both Alpines in the process. Gasly's car was repairable, but Ocon was out. He also received a 5-place grid penalty for Montreal and 2 points on his license. And Alpine is even rumoured to be considering having him sit out the next race...
With the red flag thrown before all cars entered sector 2, the order was reset for a second start.
Which meant Carlos (who'd been able to make it back to the garage) started again in P4, and Charles had to have another good start to keep his position.
This time all went well, and we were in for 75 laps of anxiety (Charles fans) / boredom (everyone else).
George (in mediums) backed up the pack, so it was 🔴🟡🔴🟡 at the front (McLarens in their special yellow Senna livery).
ALO led his usual DRS train - under the assumption he was P10 (found out after the finish that he was actually P11).
The remaining 16 (!!!) cars all made it to the finish line without further incidents.
Pierre Gasly scored his first point of the season.
There were only 6 pit stops the entire race.
After much nail biting and some lovely team radio sound bites, Charles came across the finish line and FINALLY won his home Grand Prix! 🙌
Not a dry eye in the house at the podium celebrations! The royal family was elated, with Prince Albert II crying, Charles's football buddies pumping their fists in the air, and the Prince also getting in on the champagne spraying.
Oscar was the only non-Ferrari man on the podium, but having been recently "adopted" by Charles, he was part of the family!
Watching on below the podium: girlfriend Alex, Mum Pascale, brothers Lorenzo (with girlfriend Charlotte) and Arthur, Joris, John Elkann, Andrea, Nicolas Todt, and the entire Ferrari team, with Ale lifting the P1 sign over his head! The Monaco/Italy anthem combo hadn't sounded like this since Monza 2019! 😍
Charles has already told Bryan over team radio that he wanted everyone to stay for celebrations, and celebrate they did - well into the night!
Fred and Charles also made good on their agreement to jump into the harbour (originally from 2018 when it was about scoring points).
Charles continues his streak of top 4 finishes this season, and is now only 31 points behind Max in the WDC.
Top 3: P1: LEC | P2: PIA | P3: SAI
Fastest lap: Lewis Hamilton
Driver of the Day: Charles Leclerc
Fastest pit stop: Red Bull/Max Verstappen (2:10)

FP1:
Nearly everyone took a trip to the gravel or grass or hit the kerbs
Brief red flag when Alex's car spontaneously stopped working
Ollie Bearman drove for Haas and did a great job
Bryan Bozzi made his debut as Charles's race engineer
P1: LEC | P2: RUS | P3: SAI
Tumblr media
FP2:
More lawnmowing
Max still unhappy with his car
Both Williams cars taken apart during the first half of FP2
Some minor griping on the radio, but overall a pretty straightforward session
In the end the "Italians" were at the top: Yuki (adopted home country - lives 10 km from the track), 3/16 Italian Oscar, and Italian-citizenship-when-? The King of Imola: Charles Leclerc
Tumblr media
P1: LEC | P2: PIA | P3: TSU
Tumblr media
FP3:
Two red flags: first Fernando Alonso crashed into the barrier. Driver okay, back end of the car not so much.
Second red flag was Perez with a minor crash that messed up his front wing. It was cleared and the session was resumed with only a few minutes to go.
This led to some crazy driving as drivers were rushing to make it to the line to still put in a quali sim lap. It got a little hairy for PIA and MAG , and LEC made it seem like he was racing for a win.
In the end only Norris was able to still put in a lap and went to the top of the times table.
P1: NOR | P2: PIA | P3: SAI
Tumblr media
Quali:
ALO almost binned it again in his barely-fixed-on-time car and ended up placing P20 before SAR had a laptime deleted.
HUL surprised everyone by going to the top of the list (until Max came along - whi as it later turned out had given Nico a tow)
And Oscar impeded K-Mag which led to another trip to the stewarts for Kevin, but this time the penalty went to Oscar.
Another surprise when Checo landed at P11 in Q2 with Hulk and both RBs making it through.
In Q3 HUL returned the favor to VER by giving him a tow that led to Max getting a top speed 10 kph higher than the rest of the field and putting in a monster quali lap, improving his own P1 time.
Oscar put his McLaren in P2, but after a 3-place grid penalty, he will start P5 with the 2 Ferraris on the row in front of him
Yuki got his highest quali result ever: P7
P1: VER | P2: PIA | P3: NOR

Petit's Race Notes:
Overall pretty uneventful: no crashes, no safety cars, not even any beef between Oscar and Carlos!
ALO started from the pitlane after late setup changes.
Alex picked up a penalty for an unsafe release, after his front right tyre was not properly attached at a pit stop. He limped around the track, and made it back out after another pit stop, but ultimately retired as the only DNF of the race
Alonso's brakes were on fire as he left the pit lane. He eventually also retired towards the end of the race, but was still classified as P19.
Perez and Hamilton both had little excursions in the gravel.
Max was shown a flag for track limits and struggled with his tyres towards the end.
For a bit it looked like Charles would overtake Lando, but in the end Norris walked away from LEC and caught up to Max.
Perhaps with 1 or 2 more laps, NOR could have passed VER, but in the end we had an exciting few laps and professional sim racer Verstappen took another win after already putting in a stint in the Virtual Nurburgring 24 Hours, which his team ended up winning as well.
Top 3: P1: VER | P2: NOR | P3: LEC
Fastest lap: George Russell
Driver of the Day: Lando Norris
Fastest pit stop: Red Bull/Sergio Perez (2:09)

FP1
Lots of running on track in this one session on a track we haven't been to since 2019. Despite it having rained just a day earlier, the grass in turn 7 suddenly catches fire and the session is briefly red-flagged so the marshalls can put it out.
Tumblr media
Sprint Quali
Track again on fire at the end of SQ1. In SQ2 RUS unexpectedly out, ZHO unexpectedly through to SQ3 to the delight of the Chinese crowd. Light rain but conditions fine. LEC P2. Then rain arrives for SQ3 and everyone is skating like Bambi on ice. Charles spins, crashes into the barrier but miraculously has no damage to either wings. He does go into the pits to have his car checked and get new tyres. It's cost him time and he ends up only P7. Max and Lando go off track, get their laps deleted, then Alonso takes pole, then Hamilton, then Norris. NOR gets his lap deleted again, and just as we think HAM has sprint pole, it is reinstated! Crazy quali!
P1: NOR / P2: HAM / P3: ALO
Tumblr media
Sprint
Chaotic start that sees Norris lose pole immediately and drop numerous places. Of course VER eventually works his way up to the front from P4 and wins by 13 seconds. Behind him lots of battles take place between ALO, SAI, LEC and PER. At one point ALO and SAI collide, leading to some floor damage for SAI and a puncture for Alonso, ultimately retiring him from the Sprint (he later also receives a 10-second penalty for causing a collision). PER takes advantage of all the squabbling in front of him and moves up to 3rd. LEC tries some daring passes on SAI who resorts to pushing LEC completely off track in a move Nico Rosberg deemed penalty-worthy (but FIA deemed not worth a further investigation after noting it). LEC fights back though and passes SAI with a wonderful overtake for a P4 finish.
P1: VER / P2: HAM / P3: PER
Tumblr media
Quali
In Q1 SAI hits the gravel in the last turn, spins, and luckily ends up only barely hitting the barriers on the other side of the track. The car is stalled for 1 min 17 seconds before he is able to restart it, while the session is red-flagged. He limps home on the ruined tires and without a front wing. Car is repaired by the time the track is cleared of gravel. Aston Martin later filed a complaint that he was stopped on track too long and should have been penalized, but as usual the FIA rules are too vague (what is too long?) and the complaint is dismissed. Lewis shockingly doesn't make it through to Q2 and qualifies P18.
P1: VER / P2: PER / P3: ALO

Petit's Race Notes
Carlos tried to fight Charles at the start leading to not only RUS but also HULK to get ahead of both of them.
Charles was going to work his tyre management magic again with a 1-stop, but BOT's car died and caused a safety car allowing everyone to pit.
Right before the start Lance Stroll missed seeing the train of cars in front of him braking and ended rear-ending RIC quite spectacularly (ultimately leading to RIC retiring) which also damaged PIA's car.
Tumblr media
More chaos at the restart as K-Mag made a pit maneuver on Yuko who ended up retiring.
Then it rained penalties: 10 seconds for STR and MAG for causing a collision; 10 seconds for RIC for overtaking HUL during SC (and because he couldn't serve it before he DNF-ed, it will be a 3-place grid penalty in Miami); SAR also gets a 10-second penalty for a SC infringement.
The Ferrari's are not doing as well on the Hards as on the Mediums and we cannot catch NOR (who had been sure the Ferrari's were faster than him before the race started) and PER, but we do stay ahead of RUS and ALO (whose team gambled with putting him on Softs during the SC, and were forced to pit him again).
ZHO gets to park on the grid and soak in the love from the Chinese crowd as the first Chinese driver to ever drive in the Chinese GP. 🥰
Top 3: P1: VER | P2: NOR | P3: PER
Fastest lap: Fernando Alonso
Driver of the Day: Lando Norris
Fastest pit stop: Red Bull/Max Verstappen (1.90)

What's your opinion on the next 3 races?
Well, I did say you probably don't want to hear my predictions... As a little disclaimer: it's not as easy to be accurate far in advance because of unpredictable stuff like weather, upgrades, grid penalties, crazy qualis, etc. Once the FPs and Quali are done though, I've been able to fairly accurately make predictions for most of this year's races. Anyway, here it goes with my (most likely very wildly inaccurate) predictions for the next 3 home races:
IMOLA: if it doesn't rain: 1. VER, 2. PER, 3. ALO. LEC 7 SAI 8 after the Mercs and Stroll. I don't think Ferrari's upgrades or the Sprint will make any difference in the outcome. If there is heavy rain, 1. VER, after that, anything goes.
MONACO: If Charles can tame the beast that is SF-23 long enough to put it on pole, I could see a 1. LEC, 2. VER, 3. PER. If not, I'm gonna go with 1. VER, 2. LEC, 3. PER and tbh, unless there is some blooming miracle upgrade coming from Ferrari, this may be Charles's only chance for a GP win this year. And I'm gonna say 5th place for Carlos.
SPAIN: Barcelona being the tyre devourer track, I don't think our guys stand a chance. Not sure if we are still getting some upgrades here, or whether they all have been moved up already, but either way, this is going to be another Red Bull 1-2: 1. VER, 2. PER and for some reason I'm feeling 3. RUS. Ferrari boys...maybe P5 and P6.

FP1: Verstappen leads Perez and Albon as British GP weekend begins
Max Verstappen set the pace during first practice for the British Grand Prix, topping the timesheets from Red Bull team mate Sergio Perez and the high-flying Williams of Alex Albon as Friday’s track action kicked off. After a rain-hit weekend in Austria, it was a glorious start to proceedings at the historic Silverstone Circuit, with clear blue skies covering a track lined with grandstands and grass banks full of passionate fans. PADDOCK INSIDER: Can Ferrari vie with Red Bull for Silverstone supremacy this weekend? It was a particularly busy hour of running for the drivers and teams as they not only got back up to speed with the fast, flowing layout after a year away, but also sampled Pirelli’s new tyre construction for all dry compounds which is aimed at increasing the products’ strength. As the various runs played out on the hard, medium and soft tyres, it was reigning double world champion Verstappen who came out on top, working his way down to a time of 1m 28.600s on the red-marked rubber. 1 Max Verstappen VER Red Bull Racing 1:28.600 2 Sergio Perez PER Red Bull Racing +0.448s 3 Alexander Albon ALB Williams +0.489s 4 Fernando Alonso ALO Aston Martin +0.668s 5 Charles Leclerc LEC Ferrari +0.680s After stopping his three-race run without a podium finish last time out at the Red Bull Ring, Perez backed up team mate Verstappen to give the Milton Keynes outfit a one-two result, albeit finishing some half a second adrift. While Red Bull’s upgrades are relatively limited this weekend, and Ferrari have not reported any changes, a host of rivals – including Mercedes and Aston Martin – rolled out bigger packages, as the push to catch the reigning world champions continues. READ MORE: Norris backing himself to be ‘Best of the Brits’ at Silverstone Williams, sporting more new parts of their own, started their weekend in fine style with a run to third position, Alex Albon displaying impressive straight-line speed to slot ahead of Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin and Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari. Alpine also showed some encouraging early pace, with Esteban Ocon ending up between Leclerc and the other Ferrari of Carlos Sainz, while Lando Norris kept McLaren in the top 10 mix after his strong Austria showing. Aston Martins Lance Stroll and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri – also running the upgrades Norris debuted at the last Grand Prix – rounded out the top 10 positions, which did not feature Mercedes after they opted against any soft-tyre runs. However, there were issues for Piastri at the tail-end, as McLaren reported a hydraulic leak on his chome-liveried MCL60. Lewis Hamilton took 12th after his runs on medium and hards tyres, just behind the lead AlphaTauri of Nyck de Vries, with George Russell back in 14th, behind the other Alpine of Pierre Gasly. SILVERSTONE 2008: ‘He was determined to be the best that day’ – Hamilton’s mesmerising first home win remembered by team mate Kovalainen Valtteri Bottas put his Alfa Romeo 15th, from Yuki Tsunoda and Logan Sargeant in the second of the AlphaTauri and Williams machines, as team mate Zhou Guanyu and the Haas cars of Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg brought up the rear. F1 drivers and teams will now regroup in the paddock and analyse the data from first practice before Friday’s second session gets under way at 1600 local time. via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

Perez leads Red Bull one-two in dramatic Azerbaijan GP to cut Verstappens championship lead
Sergio Perez doubled up on the streets of Baku by adding to his Sprint race triumph with victory in Sunday’s drama-filled Azerbaijan Grand Prix, leading Red Bull team mate Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc home to boost his title push. Verstappen and Perez overhauled pole-sitter Leclerc in the early stages and proceeded to trade fastest lap times at the head of the field, with the defining moment of the race coming when a Safety Car was deployed either side of the Red Bull drivers pitting. With Verstappen pitting under yellow flags brought out when Nyck de Vries stopped on track, and Perez coming in under a Safety Car that followed, the Mexican cleared his team mate and rejoined the action in the lead. Verstappen fell to third, meaning he had to overtake Leclerc for a second time. While that was a formality when the race resumed, he could not make inroads on Perez during the run to the chequered flag and had to settle for second. 1 Sergio Perez PER Red Bull Racing 1:32:42.436 0 2 Max Verstappen VER Red Bull Racing +2.137s 0 3 Charles Leclerc LEC Ferrari +21.217s 0 4 Fernando Alonso ALO Aston Martin +22.024s 0 5 Carlos Sainz SAI Ferrari +45.491s 0 Leclerc held off a late charge from Fernando Alonso to take third, meaning the two-time champion’s 2023 podium run came to an end – though fourth still represented another strong haul of points for the Aston Martin driver. Carlos Sainz crossed the line fifth in the other Ferrari, fending off Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes in the closing stages, with the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll and Silver Arrow of George Russell picking up minor points after a close call in the pits early on. Esteban Ocon and Nico Hulkenberg rose from the pit lane to hold points-paying positions for much of the race, as they extended their first stints on hard tyres, but late mandatory pit stops meant they were banking on more Safety Car drama that never arrived. Lando Norris moved into the points with a late move on Hulkenberg, before gaining another spot when Ocon pitted, while Yuki Tsunoda rounded out the top 10 to salvage a result for AlphaTauri on an otherwise difficult day for the team. Leclerc held his lead at the start but was soon overhauled by the Red Bulls Oscar Piastri, Alex Albon, Kevin Magnussen and Pierre Gasly all narrowly missed out on points as they completed a close midfield pack, ahead of final finishers Ocon, Logan Sargeant, Hulkenberg and Valtteri Bottas – the latter making three trips to the pit lane amid tyre woes. Bottas’ Alfa Romeo team mate, Zhou Guanyu, pulled into the pits late on with an unspecified technical issue, with De Vries the other retirement after he hit the wall at Turn 5 in the early stages and picked up terminal damage. With back-to-back Baku wins, which add to his 2021 Grand Prix victory at the venue, Perez cuts Verstappen’s championship lead to single figures heading to the next round of the season in Miami, which follows next weekend. Perez, who took home the Driver of the Day award, could have made up further ground in the drivers’ standings had it not been for a late stop from Russell, who bolted on a set of softs to take the fastest lap bonus point. More to follow. via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

FP1: Leclerc beats Verstappen to fastest time in opening French GP practice
Charles Leclerc’s French Grand Prix weekend got off to a strong start as he beat championship rival Max Verstappen to the fastest time in opening practice at Circuit Paul Ricard. The Ferrari driver clocked a 1m 33.930s on the soft tyre to finish just 0.091s ahead of the Red Bull, however Verstappen lost around two tenths of a second running wide at Turn 11 on his best lap. Carlos Sainz was more than 0.3s off the pace in third, the Spaniard facing a tricky weekend ahead after Ferrari fitted a new control electronics to his F1-75 that triggers a 10-place grid penalty. READ MORE: Sainz set for 10-place grid penalty in France after taking new engine component All three tyre compounds were on show in the opening 60-minute session of the weekend, as teams evaluated how the Pirelli rubber coped with the heatwave cruising across Europe right now. Track temperatures hit 58 degrees Celsius. 1 Charles Leclerc LEC Ferrari 1:33.930 2 Max Verstappen VER Red Bull Racing +0.091s 3 Carlos Sainz SAI Ferrari +0.338s 4 George Russell RUS Mercedes +0.951s 5 Pierre Gasly GAS AlphaTauri +1.049s Mercedes, who have brought updates to France, were inside a second of the fastest time, courtesy of George Russell, with the team’s reserve Nyck de Vries borrowing Lewis Hamilton’s car for FP1 and ending up ninth, half a second further back. This was the first time in Hamilton’s career – which hits 300 Grand Prix weekends in France – that he has given up his car for an FP1 session. The rules mandate each driver must do so at least once this season and the seven-time world champion, who watched the action from the Mercedes garage alongside boss Toto Wolff, chose this weekend to step aside. AS IT HAPPENED: Follow all the action from first practice for the French Grand Prix AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda have been crying out for upgrades, having last received new parts back at race four in Imola, and they have been rewarded at Paul Ricard. The early signs are positive, with Pierre Gasly just a second off the pace in fifth in his home race – however Tsunoda was down in 18th, more than two seconds off the ultimate pace. Sergio Perez had a little spin down at Turn 4 before continuing, the Mexican sixth, ahead of the leading McLaren of Lando Norris, whose team have brought more new parts than any other for this weekend. 2022 French GP FP1: Pérez flat spots his tyres in big Turn 4 spin The Briton wasn’t running them in FP1, though, as McLaren did some back-to-back testing with Daniel Ricciardo – who ended up 10th – getting the chance to give them a try. Alex Albon was a fine eighth for Williams, more than 1.5s ahead of team mate Nicholas Latifi, who was running the new upgrade package for the first time but ended up 20th overall. Zhou Guanyu was the leading Alfa Romeo in 11th, ahead of Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and home favourite Esteban Ocon in the Alpine, with Sebastian Vettel – who took a 100-year-old Aston Martin for a spin around Circuit Paul Ricard on Thursday – 14th. Double world champion Fernando Alonso was 15th, ahead of the Haas duo of Mick Schumacher and Kevin Magnussen, who are still awaiting their first updates of the season, with Robert Kubica – borrowing Valtteri Bottas’s car for FP1 – 19th.
