Sonic x ...DC Comics?!
youtube
We have our reveal of what our new Sonic comic crossover will be, and it's... not what I expected! We're getting a five-issue comic series mashing up Sonic with the DC Comics universe written by Ian Flynn, plus a slew of merch to go with it.
To be honest, I don't know how to feel about this? I don't feel the hype.
Okay, for one, cards on the table: I have more attachment to Marvel's cast of characters than DC's. Sue me. But it's not like I don't also like DC's heroes! I grew up watching the Batman movies and the Justice League cartoons and Adam West's Batman and whatnot. I loved Teen Titans so much as a kid that I was Robin one year for Halloween. DC's cool! People have been comparing Sonic to the Flash for years! So... why does this collab make me feel nothing?
Well, for one, it might be that I would prefer a series like this to be about Sonic and friends meeting the Justice League, as opposed to them being the Justice League. To me, personally, that just seems a little more interesting. Seeing how those characters play off of each other. People have been asking "who would win in a race, Sonic or the Flash?" for years, so that was kinda the thing I was latching onto as the impetus for this crossover. And yes, in the interview they tease the possibility of the actual characters meeting, but they're marketing it primarily via these mashup characters with Sonic and co. cosplaying as the Justice League, so I have to assume that's the main focus of the story.
But I'm also just sitting here like... why DC? Why is this the highest priority crossover to do with Sonic? It seems so arbitrary. Just mashing two random popular franchises together. It doesn't feel like something that resonates so heavily with Sonic that we just NEED this crossover to exist. The DC universe isn't something that has much of a thematic connection with Sonic. Like, you look at the TMNT x Naruto crossover, and THAT feels inspired. That's something you never would've thought would happen, but the second it's announced it seems so obvious, and the sick cover art sells the idea that it's gonna be something fun. (Hell, speaking of TMNT, that feels like a crossover that would've made way more sense to me. No, the single panel of the Archie comics they appeared in doesn't count.)
When the Sonic X DC thing is announced with a series of stock vectors of the Sonic cast cosplaying as the Justice League and the news that there will be a ton of merch for this, well. It just makes it seem like this is first and foremost a collab designed to generate new Funko Pops.
I don't know. I'm sure that whatever the actual story looks like, Ian will do his damnedest to make the comic fun. It'll probably be pretty decent. He's the perfect writer for this assignment. It's just not the crossover I would've requested. Maybe I'm just being a hater here. I know a lot of people are excited, with speculation about what other Sonic characters could take the roles of DC characters. Maybe showing something from the actual comic would've been a better sell. But, well, that's how I feel about it based on the announcement!

welcome to ghost mod's thought experiment, the m/f ship bracket bonus round where every single m/f ship from the original round is pit against reylo of the 97/3 #shreksweep infamy.
why, you ask? mostly cuz of this.
they're going from lowest to highest per the original rankings, starting off with our newcomers adam/eve. 9 polls per day will roll out on queue throughout the est evening from may 12th-18th! after polls are closed one week later, i will post the final rankings of who swept the hardest (or failed to sweep...)
all polls can be found under the #bonus round tag, and this masterpost also contains links to each specific poll. there is also a spreadsheet with current bonus round standings and stats from the original bracket if you like numbers. :)

Oh my God!
I just caught up with World's Finest: Teen Titans and I absolutely have to write this out:
First of all, I love this cover:
Tumblr media
The thing that caught my eye: “you're grounded.”
Not the dramatic “you're fired” as if the motherfucker didn't raise that damn kid in his own damn house for YEARS.
(I know. I know. Bar on the ground, but what would you?)
Also, the anger palpable on Bruce's face and Dick's absolute disregard for it. I'm laughing here y'all. This is what teenagers act like. This is what fights between parents and children look like.
Also. Dick Grayson, I've been missing. You're back from war!
Tumblr media
I love how curt he is. The “Get lost” hits in all the right places. We love a strongly-principled character that stands for what he believes in. With all the lukewarm Dick Grayson writing floating around I felt like walking into a coffee shop while it's snowing outside.
More of this writing, please.
Tumblr media
I'd been waiting for this moment all through this series.
Tumblr media
This conversation.
I compare things all the time. It might not be the right thing in every field but I think it serves well when it comes to comic books. We all have personal “canon criteria”—for example, mine are “Darwyn Cooke wrote this Bruce so I'm taking it as valid characterisation ” or “Every version of Bruce played by Kevin Conroy is valid”. (Minus Bruce Timm bullshit!)
Which was what cinched my hatred for Bruce after reading a Robin short story that Cooke wrote and alluded to Robin: Year One in it. I mean, I might not fuck with Dixon, but am I going to call even Cooke's Bruce OOC? No. It means Bruce is a jerk. Full stop.
Waid is one of the writers I respect (excluding Kingdom Come. I hate it and I can't put my finger on the why. But I just do: I hate it. I hate it for Clark. I hate it for Diana. And I'm a professional Bruce-hater so let's not even go there. I hate it for Dick too.)
And Dick and Bruce's relationship has a lot of baggage from the fact that a) Bruce is himself traumatised and fails to meet Dick's emotional needs b) he wasn't ready to be a father when he adopted Dick c) Dick simply suffers from being the eldest—the test child.
And very rarely have I seen writers manage to walk on the thin line of complicated-but-dedicated-and-strong.
Young Justice cartoon did it. Dick and Bruce's relationship is going strong. But they fight and have different values. And Dick can see all that is wrong with Bruce's approach to vigilantism in particular and life in general.
Grimm (Legends of the Dark Knight #149-154) did it right. Where Bruce hurt Dick deeply and made him feel unwanted all the while overthinking about Dick's well-being. Way to go, buddy! You can see the repercussions it has for Dick while simultaneously stare at this man who's tying himself into knots trying to think how best to parent.
I think that's what most Bruce and Dick comics miss: the excessive worrying. They don't show the worry, make them fight for drama, never address it apart from throwing out a “it's because Bruce's worried” (bitch, where?) and have Dick running back to Gotham at the first chance. It sounds an awful lot like “your parents hurt you 'cause they love you” bullshit.
I think World's Finest manages it well because foremost, Bruce says, in words, that he's worried about Dick's well-being. He's taciturn, he's putting constant pressure on Dick all in the hopes of making him quit Titans. All this makes him a jerk. But I don't hate him for it.
It's between Dick's “you don't trust me” and Bruce's “no, I don't trust them.”
Tumblr media
Most teenagers clash with their parents. It's normal. That's what Waid has shown here and I love it. It feels very—normal?
Especially when the Bats aren't normal! Bruce sure as fuck ain't a normal parent. But there was something very bitter-sweet coming-of-age in this conversation.
Bruce does all those things that are bad for Dick and his growing independence. You're not supposed to handle teenagers like that.
He's worried and taking desperate measures. “If I punish him, then maybe he'll obey me and quit Titans and then he'll he safe”—lots of parents who don't know how to deal with teenagers do it.
But the sequence of it: Bruce is worried → Bruce wants Dick to quit Titans → for Dick it means proving himself to be better, to not get hurt (as if he can control that beyond a certain point) → Bruce being alarmed at Dick's insistence to stay with the Titans and taking desperate measures like benching him.
At least it makes sense.
Compare it to Dixon's Nightwing origin story, which honestly, personally I think was lazy writing. Drama for drama's sake. “You’re fired because you're spending too much time with the Titans.” The same writer also had Bruce say that he did it because he wanted Dick to strike out on his own. Blah, blah, blah.
And no matter whatever happens he'd never ever say it to Dick's face that he's worried about him because—well, reasons.
Robin: Year One logic:
I'm worried about Dick's health so I fire him. He runs off and can get hurt? He joins a school for assasins? None of my business. He can get hurt on his own, I don't care as long as it is not on my conscience. Peace.
—Bruce “professional narcissist” Wayne.
So, yes. When faced with this book(WF: TT), I'd call Dixon's writing lazy.
I'm also comparing this to several other instances when Bruce verbally says (never to Dick, mind you) that he loves that Dick's a better person and better vigilante than him. But in the same book he'd yell at Dick for exactly the same thing. (I consider that lazy writing, since BTAS made sure to show a shot of Bruce smiling whenever Dick was happy/not like him).
I like this thing here where he says it to Dick's face. He's still grounding him for “discipline's sake” or whatever—very, very IC for Bruce.
But he also lets Dick know that he appreciates his values, that are different—better—than Bruce's own.
I can stomach that.
Honestly Bruce's writing in this book felt like BtAS writing (pre-Bruce Timm fuckery). That's a compliment.
P.S. Waid's a good story-teller overall. His Superman: Birthright was one of the first Superman comics I read and I fell in love with Clark right away.
Peace ✌️😂

So I just read that part of New Titans where Tim is introduced and Dick leaves the comic for a while to train him and look out for him and Bruce. And that confused me because when people talk about that time they always make it seem like Tim became Robin and Dick left immediately and didn’t see any of them for a while until Tim forced him to keep coming back, leaving him to take care of a suicidal Bruce and figure everything out himself. Like New Titans implies Dick was there for weeks if not months specifically for Tim and Bruce. Plus before Tim even arrived Dick was still going after Bruce and trying to help him. That makes Dick and Tim’s relationship so much better to me and I don’t know why people imply it’s the opposite. Maybe for Tim angst?
That's so wild I didn't even know that was a thing that was going around! Dick straight up ghosted the titans to help them out so boo to that. (Also idk I enjoyed the scourge arc last time I read it forever ago so thats a bummer)
I'm inclined to agree, and it's so annoying because Tim has a lot of good angst but the fandom refuses to read comics and go on vibes instead so it's always like. Dick kicked Tim out of Gotham, Jack and Janet Drake were abusively negligent, Bruce only treated Tim as a tool, and other shit that straight up did not occur because they want Tim to be an overworked underappreciated shy kid instead of like. Everyone's favorite teen who loved his parents(rip) and simultaneously had a lot of support but also a lot of pressure put on him because Jason's death had raised the stakes.
I think there's the added bonus of Dick having a target on his back for being the first Robin, so he tends to get his canon actions/lore/traits removed or ignored to serve fanon angst(ie he's stupid, he's murderous, he's callous, he's unsupportive, he doesn't care abt the little ppl etc etc) so another Robin can be propped up when it's literally not a competition. 'Poor little baby Tim was left alone to take care of a megalomaniacal man child because Dick was too in his feelings to help until Tim begged him to😞' is def a good way to do that but whatever that's the hater in me jumping out so I'll end it here lol

a (non)comprehensive list of all characters that i as a child decided were asian because representation hardly existed in the early 2010's, with varying degrees of asian-coding and/or canon. it also gets more unhinged
will not be tagging SHIT because i would like to not experience hate but also i feel like my mutuals would somewhat enjoy this. as a kid, my only requirements were that they either 1) had dark hair 2) had dark eyes or 3) had unnatural hair/eye/skin colour in which case i could go nuts
list is under the cut:
you liked these fairies cause you were gay?? i liked them because they were asian to me we are NOT the same (i am also gay). both are asian coded so i wasn't wrong. also shoutout to vidia for being asian and an absolute BITCH. i think her back is sore from carrying the bitchy asian rep. no one's doing it like her
Tumblr media Tumblr media
musa from winx. also asian coded so it works
Tumblr media
batman. NOT to be confused with bruce wayne. bruce wayne is white af even to me as a child. but when he had the mask on i could project on him and call him chinese
Tumblr media Tumblr media
dick grayson's robin in almost all cartoon iterations (pictured above in the batman) but also including:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
to be clear, this is NOT to be confused with dick grayson the civilian, or dick grayson as nightwing. by my 9 y/o logic those guys were both white af. but when dick grayson had the robin mask on that gave room for me to project, as such they're asian
zatanna zatara is wasian IN MY HEART. to ME her mum is chinese and obvi her dad is italian so she's almost just like me (chinese/spanish). idc argue with the wall
Tumblr media
superman but ONLY the justice league unlimited version
Tumblr media
huntress bertinelli, for the same reasons as zatanna, was always wasian to me. but she gave off half korean, half italian vibes. i will not explain myself
Tumblr media
now is raven from a different plane than us?? yes. however azarath is home to asians idek
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sorry guys jinx is a bad bitch so she's also asian
Tumblr media Tumblr media
while we're at it, beast boy is also asian but ONLY in teen titans. unfortunately young justice beast boy is whitewashed (he was never asian to begin with). i asked my sister if she ever asian-washed characters when watching tv she said no (rudeass) but i provided multiple teen titans as an example and my mum was like "wait?? beast boy isn't asian?? i thought he was asian??" so beast boy is actually mum-approved-asian. i don't make the rules
Tumblr media Tumblr media
draculaura from monster high was always asian to me idc what the haters say. everyone say thank you to the monster high reboot for giving me asian draculaura because frankly i deserve it
Tumblr media
also. robecca steam is south asian in my heart
Tumblr media
jackson jekyll was also asian. idk. he just was
Tumblr media
now, since the eah reboot made draculaura wasian i'm BEGGING for there to be an eah reboot because they will do my girl raven queen justice. SHE is asian
Tumblr media
kitty cheshire is also asian i don't make the rules
Tumblr media
sorry guys duchess swan is also asian
Tumblr media
while i'm at it, faybelle thorn is also asian talk to the wall
Tumblr media
now i need you guys to pinky promise to be nice to me. percy jackson was wasian to me until ethan nakamura was introduced. only after ethan's introduction did my 13 y/o ass let percy be white again
Tumblr media
tony stark is asian but ONLY in iron man armoured adventures
Tumblr media
now, a plethora of xmen evolution characters are actually asian (source: i made it the fuck up) these include, but are not limited to: wolverine, x23, wanda and pietro

1.how do you think mari would feel about leaving the superhero life and becoming queen? would she ever resent her brother for not bearing the respobsility
2. which one of Kory's hero uniforms is your favorite
3. what are your reasons for not liking dickbabs (coming from a. dickbabs hater)
1. I think she would miss it and especially miss her family especially but she was prepared for this since she was a child so she knows this is going to happen eventually. So she's been prepared for a long time but she does still miss the freedom of being on Earth and being a hero.
2. While I'm kinda ehh on the run I really like the current outfit she has in the Titans run it's nice and I liked it's armored a bit. I also will always have a soft spot for the outfit she has in the Teen Titans show because I grew up with it.
3. I hate Dickbabs for a few reasons. One reason being it's so toxic. In the 90s run it didn't even feel like Barbara even liked Dick to me. She always found something to complain about with him. Plus Barbara breaking up with Dick because Tarantula kissed him and kicked him in the balls and she blamed him for it and then when his circus got burned down she refused to let him stay a bit longer because "The breakup was too painful for her. Bitch his family circus burned down you heartless ass. And the other main reason is they have to retcon so much about Barbara to make it make any sense. They made her younger. They made it so that she and Dick were childhood sweethearts. They made it so he was flirty with Barbara even when he was with Kory. It's all made to act like Kory was less important to Dick than she was. Dick loved Kory. Head over heels in love with her. He would say it to her constantly. And you're trying to claim he actually didn't and his true love was Barbara the whole time? Yeah no bullshit. It's awful. It's toxic. It's boring. And it's my least favorite ship ever. I hope it dies in a fire.

jason comic recs? preferably ones i can get collected because there is one normal comics store in my vicinity and i never get the chance to go. no drivers license blues
OH GOD I FORGOT ABOUT THIS I'M SENDING THE FORCE OF 1000 APOLOGIES RN.
honestly i have. no clue what can be collected vs what can't. i don't buy many full runs of anything. so sorry in advance.
oh god i've gotta rack my brain for this..
i can't even rec u most of his robin run.... i'm a hater about his pre-crisis origin. huge hater if u will.
there's like 20~ batman issues post-crisis where's he's alive and robin. so there's that. (#408-426)
he's in the 1985 superman annual. with wonder woman. and it's cute
oh there's that one part in new teen titans (#18-31). he's in that w/ really good characterisation... at least i think so. it's been years since i've read it.
OH. best jaybin ever in batman: the cult
green arrow (2001) has a few issues containing post-utrh jason, those are good. (#69-72)
i liked his bonding with dick in the 2021 nightwing annual.
he was fun in robins (2021)
i'll rec both the outlaws runs but do not trust any of their characterisations on anyone who isn't jason. don't even trust their characterisation on jason.
i liked red hood/arsenal too but they kind of butchered roy.
OH HE WAS SUPER GOOD IN DCEASED: UNKILLABLES.
ok yeah that's pretty much all i have.... everything else i can think of that i've enjoyed are literally just single cameo issues he's had in other stuff i've read, or batman.

Omg I'm glad I found a fellow new teen titans hater (or at least critic) because while I think Wolfman had some really neat ideas it really amazes me how so much of what he's written for Dick is like the polar opposite of his character for 40 years and how people ignore that simply because they don't read golden/silver age batman... like I hate reboot Nightwing as much as anyone but it's crazy to me how people think he's always been the most anal about his moral code as if it didn't take years for him to develop it after watching Bruce (like in canon: https://64.media.tumblr.com/f20ae729d626788129a371dab7f790db/5b84ba907a5dc5f9-ac/s1280x1920/e0e719108502d4fa51364eb748450141fd1bcedd.png), or how he'd give up college/a day life to be Robin when in canon he was the one all gung-ho about going to college while Bruce hoped for him to stay home (and ironically enough Bruce quit Wayne Industries himself so he could focus full-time on being Batman lmao: https://64.media.tumblr.com/48945b33fa70a2bfbded0fe6c83017d0/68e853c82fce0d82-5a/s1280x1920/32e3b3ab44fa7364ca82eb63bb8c6d5bbbbb7132.png), or even that Dick wouldn't have the patience to mentor children or something when the literal purpose of creating Robin was to be a role model for children to relate to and sef-insert themselves as his friend, hence why he always excelled in school and sports and stuff...like Bill Finger even created this concept of "Robin's Regulars" to show that Dick liked kids and inspired them (https://4.bp.blogspot.com/_wpPLG-yJpJw/S5v2_3KXjdI/AAAAAAAADnM/1aOMBWuCmT0/s400/robinsregulars.jpg)... the good part is that NTT took place when Dick was just 18-19, I can easily pass it off as his angsty phase that he grew out of in the same way Peter's Ditko era is passed off as his edgy college kid phase in-universe that he outgrew thanks to his friends lmao
admittedly i think trying to ascertain any kind of moral code from bruce or dick in the golden age is a bit of a directionless endeavor bc the writers switched things up soooo often depending on whether they want to pander to morality or comedic value 😭 like there's a golden age issue where bruce quite literally lets= someone die in an electric whirlpool of some kind omds it was hysterical. but yeah interestingly with wolfman i like a lot of the things he did with dick as a character if i view them as developments resulting not only from his personal foray into adulthood but also from the distance that started to grow between him and bruce. it was completely logical for dick to reassess a lot of the things he wanted back when he thought it was going to be him and bruce forever versus at present when bruce clearly no longer wanted to sanction him being robin and dick took that to mean he wasn't good enough (even though bruce was merely being protective and trying to respect dick's own ability to choose his own path in life). the problem with wolfman is that rather than portray it as a series of newfound assessments made in context of newfound developments in dick's life, he wrote these assessments as if they had been lodged in dick's mind since the day he was taken in. which to me at least seems to diminish the significance of dick's development into a more agitated, hyper-emotional control freak. it's not supposed to be something that's always been there. it's more latent. dick's belief in himself with respect to his relationship with bruce sort of hung by a thread for the entirety of their tenure together. that's what happens when you let a nine-year-old become a vigilante and spend nearly nine years together thereafter fighting crime with him as your exclusive partner. it builds expectations, hopes, dreams. for his entire life dick was building up to this.. fantasy almost. and when he went to college it still wasn't so bad because even if there was a desire to be independent he still felt like he had bruce's support. the fantasy remained intact. it was only when dick started to realize that being in college hindered what he really wanted to do with his life, and then bruce opposed him on it, and then they proceeded to disagree on a number of other things—as respectfully as they could admittedly. that was the nice thing about the early 80s. they actually talked in the truest sense of the word—and then bruce finally cut the cord (so to speak) on robin existing as a required extension of batman, that the floodgates really opened. every latent positive emotion that dick had ever felt in his life because of what he believed bruce had given him unconditionally was suddenly up for dissection. and that's how you proceeded to get the neurotic ticking time bomb we know and love so well today. or at least that's how i like to conceptualize it in my head

even though i HATE AND DESPISE that teen titans comic with jason (you know the one) i guessss i understand where he (the writer) is coming from? i feel like if a more competent writer wrote something with the same premise but went about it a different way, i would consider it a really important note in jasons story.
jason was violent at 17/18 yo. this is not out of character for him at all! the idea of him tracking down tim and attacking him would make a lot of sense (he did it briefly in hush and i think it was fine there) the (main) PROBLEM i have with it is the MOTIVES!!! im sure jason does have a problem with being ""replaced"" and im sure he also thinks tim isnt ""strong enough"" to be robin (more on this later..) BUT!! thats not jasons biggest issue with tim. its that tim is going to die and he doesnt want any more dead children. its that simple!
if jason attacked tim and was like "see how easy it is to defeat you? you could end up dead. i dont want any more kids dying wearing the same costume i was wearing when *I* died." this would be in character and make sense!!! i dont think jason is unable to do bad things or make mistakes and if he attacked tim for any reason its obviously evil. but that wouldve been in character and made sense.
and this is unrelated kinda but to go back to the "tim isnt strong enough" thing, god i hate how that was shown. tim being like "no i AM strong enough to be robin! ill keep getting up no matter what! ill keep going!!" is so fucking stupid. not only is it implying jason was just simply not a good robin and shouldve just gotten up and kept fighting!! (he was tortured, locked in a warehouse, and blown up. what was he meant to do? what would tim had done with multiple broken bones and a punctured lung?) but it also is tells the reader that tim is special and different and jason is just a jealous hater for no reason (lots of tims writing is like this...). it misses the whole point. the writers just take any opportunity to hate on jason and tell the reader tim is special and wont die because jason was stupid, and tim isnt. (even though if it were realistic at all, and didnt have biased writers, tim would be just as vulnerable as jason)
tldr: the teen titans issue with jason couldve been really good is the writers werent insanely baised against jason and actually understood his motives.

I have to provide some context for this one.
Once a year, some friends and I get together to put on a big powerpoint night. We go hard for these. I usually do a big presentation where I analyze a piece of media. I put a lot of effort into doing the research for these. I once did one on eugenics rhetoric/ideology in My Hero Academia, for context.
This year, I want to do a presentation that tackles the antisemitism and fascist ideology in Attack On Titan. Naturally, this required research. A couple of weeks ago, I was reading an article on Polygon when I read that Attack On Titan has a YA novel spin-off. Not a light novel translated into English. A YA romance novel written by an American author published in English for American audiences.
Huh, I thought. You guys can probably tell by some of my reading choices that I deeply enjoy putting myself through some god-awful books (primarily YA). And one that's a tie-in to an anime I love being a hater for? Sign me up.
I bought myself a used copy and read it the moment it came in the mail.
That's all the context you need. Now that I've covered my ass, let's talk about what I actually think about Garrison Girl by Rachel Aaron.
It's not the worst thing I've ever read. The prose is overall decent, and I can appreciate that the main character has a pretty clear character arc. The best contribution Aaron made to the Attack On Titan series as a whole is a section towards the beginning where she takes about 2-3 pages to just describe how grotesquely horrifying the Titans are. I always thought the Titans were more funny-looking than anything, so this was a much needed improvement.
Everything else... ugh. Where do I start?
First off, the romance with male lead Jax drove me nuts. On paper, it's probably okay. Aaron put in a lot of effort to make sure they started off hating each other before slowly falling in love. Unfortunately, I really don't like Jax as a character. He annoys the hell out of me, and there was one too many times where he forced the main character, Rosalie, to apologize for something she did not need to apologize for.
The plot is largely episodic, theoretically tied together by Rosalie's character arc. By itself, it just feels like a slightly boring set-up for a larger series. It's fine. Some of the antagonistic characters were too cartoonishly evil for my taste, but it at least works. Having a plot that works is a surprisingly tall order, so I will give Aaron credit for that.
But in context of being a story that ties into Attack On Titan...
Attack On Titan is very good at being self-important. It is a very stupid story with some glaring writing flaws that can hide its issues under the veneer of depth and complexity. As long as you do not think about Attack On Titan too hard, it is a fine watch. Then it started including things that you HAVE to think about like eugenics and persecution, and it becomes glaringly obvious that the author has no real idea how any of this stuff works and only cares about the aesthetics of war.
None of that is in Aaron's book. On one hand, THANK GOD. On the other, this doesn't feel like it fits in with anything in the anime. Where are the gruesome, meaningless deaths? Where are the characters waxing poetry over their moral choices? Where are characters doing batshit things that can only be described as "cool as balls"? Aaron tries to squeeze some of this towards the end, but that still means reading 200 pages of lighthearted military exploits.
This just feels ill-conceived.
I have never read anything else by Aaron, but from a quick perusing of her Good Reads account, I don't think I would have picked her to write this. In her Reddit AMA, she says she took the project because she's a big fan of the show. Good for her, but I don't think she did a good job at making something that fits with the show.
But any Attack On Titan tie-in shouldn't be written for teens. An older target demographic would have opened the doors for a lot more of the anime's signature flairs.
I just think the very existence of this book is fascinating. Every time I check out the YA section at B&N, I always see more novels that are part of bigger non-book franchises: Disney princesses, Avatar the Last Airbender, Marvel comics. Whoever decided in ~2016 that American publishing should try to go anime was ahead of their time.
Yet, it seems like this book didn't do well enough to generate a trend. I haven't seen any other anime novels. But anime is more popular and more mainstream than it has ever been. Surely, another attempt will come.
Yet, Attack On Titan is a last of its kind. While anime is hugely popular, none of the big series now are the same ubiquity that early Attack On Titan did. Do you remember 2013 when the show first came out? Everyone was watching it, even non-anime fans. Many of the articles I read credit it as jumpstarting Crunchyroll. They also say that it's the perhaps the last property that every weeb could be expected to have working knowledge of, much like everyone's latent knowledge of Shonen Jump's old Big Three. There is so much variety and options at this point that weebs aren't watching all the same shows anymore. It's the last titan of an old age of anime fandom.
I don't know if anyone will ever attempt a novel tie-in again. Should it happen, then this is a strange, ill-conceived product ahead of its time. Should it not, then this is the most unique and strange attempt to profit off of a mainstream anime.
I hope Alex Aster writes a novel for Naruto. That's the good ending.

Since you've earned kind of a reputation as Batgirl 2009 hater (positive), what are your thoughts on Wendy Harris as Proxy? I really, really want to like her and the idea of her being Oracle's protegee, but I kind of disliked how it was set up and then it got derailed completely by the calculator and that completely took over the b-plot with her and Barbara. idk maybe I'm way off base bc I do like Wendy and want her back but I was curious if you had an opinion
It's always a little disorienting being told that I have a reputation, even a minor fandom one. Being Known is such an odd feeling. 😅
Anyway, my thoughts on Wendy mostly agree with yours -- I really want to like the concept. Wendy, Marvin and Wonder Dog got screwed over in Teen Titans, hard, for the sake of nothing but mean-spirited edgelord shock value bullshit, the exact kind of edgelord shock value bullshit that resulted in the War Games torture scenes and the Killing Joke. So the concept of reclaiming her the same way Babs was reclaimed and making her Oracle's protegee so that the new Batgirl had a dedicated "guy in the chair" while freeing Babs up to go head the Birds of Prey, that's a solid idea.
But the execution sucks, for a lot of the same reasons the rest of Batgirl 09 sucks -- because it's ablest for one, treating both Wendy and Barbara like they're trapped in their wheelchairs and longing for escape, but also because it's ultimately not even really about Wendy learning to overcome her past or even connecting with Babs about their mutual struggles and/or with Steph over their mutually shitty dads. It's about Wendy raging and crying and being miserable until she's finally ~inspired~ by Stephanie's ~amazing badassery~ to get violent revenge on her impossibly eeeeeeeevil insane father and then deciding that being Steph's mission control is her new goal in life because what the hell else is she gonna do.
It just sucks and honestly I hope they ever bring Wendy back it'll be a complete refresh like they did with the Wonder Twins. Just, bring back Wendy, Marvin and Wonder Dog. Team them up with Snapper Carr as like, the normal human support staff at the Hall of Justice who have to deal with all the craziness that the League puts them through. That'd actually make for a pretty fun slice of life webcomic series now that I think of it.
