Last July we officially announced our hope to adopt as we began our adoption journey towards connecting with expectant moms (and dads) considering adoption for their baby. For the next 5 months I believed a miracle was about to take place. I know that faith can move mountains and my faith was heaven high. Even with the ups and downs and all of the connections that fell through in the first few months, I continued to hope that our miracle would soon take place. That the one phone call, DM, text message that would change our lives forever was just around the corner. I believed that we would have a baby girl in our home by the end of the year. I was wrong. I was wrong to hope that we would be the odd ones out (of all of the faithful hopeful adoptive families) that wouldn’t wait the average 2 years to adopt. But I was also wrong in believing that a miracle didn’t take place. Because a big miracle did occur, and I almost missed it... Flip Flops & Combat Boots. . . Her name was name was Nancy Bayless I believe she was in her late 70's at the time. She saw us holding hands one Sunday morning, we were just newlyweds at the time. We were young with no real idea of what we were doing in life but what ever it was, we knew were were doing it together. Nancy approach ed us on Sunday morning. She grabbed both of our hands in her own and passionately said "Never stop holding hands". We have never forgotten her words or that moment. Nancy shared with us stories of both of her husband's that had passed away. Stories of love that remained and lasted through every storm. She gifted us with her priceless wisdom & we gifted her with her first In N Out Burger in a red two door Pontiac Sunfire (which she thought was amazing). . . Fast forward 20 years I'm still wearing flip flops and he is still wearing combat boots , we are still hand in hand. I'm still the rule breaker & he is still the rule follower. This is solidarity, stealing time like we are bandits and waiting for the years stolen to be redeemed. We have fewer answers and more questions than our 20 year old selves. Pain has shaved all that we thought "we knew" into humility of having "no idea" of how this all works out but holding on to each other, healing. . . We didn't know we would almost be destroyed by the dream of Foster Care & Adoption. We didn't know the battlefield we would walk was not on foreign soil but in our own home. We didnt know we would trade dog tags for court dockets. We didn't know we would have to heal a marriage from trauma. Nancy had no way of knowing any of that either. What she did know she gave us. "Never stop holding hands" . . How to you walk through hell, fire, and broken glass? He then put his ear to her stomach with a big smile as if he could hear them in there. Instinct, I think. He hasn’t seen that. The only babies we’ve had in the house that made them big brothers didn’t come with the opportunity to listen to my belly. We speak of their birth often though I wasn’t there, I know they were loved. I speak of it with excitement. That babies are celebrated. Then Liam went on to say, “Millie would have three babies because she is already nursing one and two more would make it three. 🤣” he’s so right! Daily we pray for Devine healing of their little bodies and brain. Glory to God we do see healing. I worry each day though that now our house isn’t open to more kids (because in the state of California 6 kids is really the max) who will open their doors. There are still kids all around us and we can’t help them. Who will pick up the torch? But here’s the deal. Listen. God didn’t need us. Nope. It was His gift to us to invite us into this service but he didn’t need us to accomplish anything. So here’s the question. If you hear His voice. The tug. The conviction. Will you do that next right thing and say, “yes.” There won’t ever be a right time. Age teaches you that. You know who you are. He may not ask again. It may not be so loud. It matters. This blog post is over a year in the making. I’m honestly not even sure where to begin. So I’ll try to start from the beginning. If you are new here you may know that Roger and I have talked about adopting since before we were married and that last July we made an official announcement that we are hoping to adopt. But what you may not know is that before we made this announcement we prayed about and considered all of the different ways we could grow our family. We knew God was calling us to live out our beliefs and desire to help children in need of a loving home. And we believed (and still do) that adoption was and is what God has called us to do (more on this later). There are a plethora of ways to do this, some of the most common being international adoption, domestic adoption through an agency, domestic adoption with consultants, or private domestic adoption (which is what we have been pursing this last year). Before we chose the path of private domestic adoption I had a friend from high school reach out to me who is a social worker and she offered to answer any questions we may have about adoption or foster care. So I took her out for coffee and we spent hours talking and she kindly and encouragingly shared about foster care as I took down page after page of notes.
