@fredsythe thinking about gladys being the first one to take fred to a punk show and introduce him to punk music and music history and just generally movies and magazines you couldn’t buy in riverdale and just show him all these gender non conforming musicians and it helped him finally realize there was a community out there for him and label his identity back when he was just a baby gay who thought piercing one ear and secretly kissing a boy was the edgiest he could ever hope to get ... 

like he already gravitated towards an interest in music and jewelry and rock and protest and self expression but he had no idea how far he could push it and how big the world actually was outside of his small town life where you had to be presentable all the time and everything he learned later about queer history and rock and roll history came from that awakening courtesy of gladys jones... an angel 

also it just makes me very happy to envision gladys fred and fp hanging out together and skateboarding and going to underground music shows and having this whole little life outside of school and feeling so free together they are my beloveds that is all

did the parents ever have to do some sort of video project in school? and if so, how did it go

OH THEY ABSOLUTELY DID!!!!! 

It was in early high school, and Gladys, FP, and Fred paired up. The subject of the video was supposed to be about peer pressure that teens face, and they decided to do theirs as an anti-smoking PSA. Which, of course,  was the hugest joke of all time because Gladys and FP smoked a pack a day at that point. (Fred had never touched a cigarette and NeVeR WOULD!!!!!) So they met in Gladys’ basement to brainstorm their video and he ate a whole bag of doritos while FP and Gladys smoked and by that afternoon they had their video all planned out. 

Fred roped Oscar into it and made him hold the camera, which was one of their parents’ camcorders. It took hours and hours to film because they were laughing so hard and having so much fun. In true Ed Wood style, the finished product switched from day to night in the same scene and back again. 

The storyline was that Fred and FP were two students walking innocently in the woods, and they were approached by Gladys in a huge raincoat who bullied them into smoking cigarettes. Then they cut to a shot of Fred and FP coughing and puking (canned soup) and then to a shot of some gravestones which they got at the local cemetery. The best part was a shot of Gladys opening her poncho and showing all the cigarette cartons they had taped inside. 

They got an A- on the project and all three of them were pleased as punch. Artie was pissed that Fred used his actual grandfather’s grave in the video but Fred very sanctimoniously told him that if their video stopped other students from trying cigarettes, it was worth it, wasn’t it? 

Gladys and FP made him stop on the way home from school so they could buy two more packs of cigarettes each. Mary rolled her eyes the whole time it was playing in class. Fred decided he had a future in Hollywood but then abandoned that when he realized he’d rather be a rock star.

my very long list of fred & gladys headcanons

gladys did fred's makeup a lot! the only thing he did by himself was eyeliner (whenever it didnt look like a mess for once it was because gladys did it for him) but she would beat his whole face for him, sparkly eyeshadow included, and it made him so happy. 

gladys very rarely wore pink but she kept pink eyeshadow and pink nail polish in her makeup kit because fred liked to borrow it 

gladys made a lot of dads nervous but artie actually really liked her - probably because she always made him laugh! he thought she was great and fred was actually jealous of how easily they seemed to get along. 

they had so many sleepovers at gladys' house where they'd just lay on her mattress on the floor at the end of the night and put in a VHS and without fail one of them (usually fred) would fall asleep before the opening credits were over but it was the most enjoyable part of their night and theyd sleep side by side with their arms touching and the tv still on

gladys borrowed so many pairs of fred's plaid pyjama pants during these occasions that he stopped asking for them back .. they were very much comfy clothes friends they were always spending whole days in sweatpants and slept-in tshirts together 

they loved going to thrift stores and finding the weirdest shit they could... and sometimes theyd go back later and buy something that made them laugh and give it to one another for a birthday gift 

fred and gladys had a list of inside jokes longer than anything.. obviously fp was in on most of them and they had in-jokes with most of their friends but fred and gladys especially were that pair where one of them could say a word with a certain inflection and the other would bust up laughing over something that happened a month ago. 

both of them knew they were never going to college- gladys bc she didnt finish high school, fred because of artie, but they used to like to talk about how cool it would be if they went to the same college and were roomates and all the stuff they'd get up to

once they made up a whole plan where they were going to move to san francisco or new york and be a drag queen/drag king duo they even made up stage names and started choreographing their show

gladys found herself comforting fred many a time while he cried about some girl in their class that he'd decided was the one and then it didnt work out. even though it got repetitive she always treated it seriously and reassured fred that everything would work out in the end. if they really hurt his feelings she'd offer to seduce them and then break their hearts but fred never took her up on it. 

they both loved women so much... they loved talking about girls together

gladys helped write 80% of the fredheads songs and was the only reason they weren't terrible.. she's also the one who got fred hooked on joan jett. obviously. 

she once insisted fred go to a professional when he wanted yet another ear piercing and probably saved the andrews hundreds of dollars in hospital bills because fred was always getting whopping ear infections from alice shoving needles through his head

they're very tactile friends! always offering back rubs and hugs and kisses and hair combing. they were that male-female friendship in school that everyone was like "you'll fall for each other someday!" but really they were just gay... well bi in this case both of em but still..... you all know how this goes im sure. 

they always experiment with their hair together! gladys has given fred some awful haircuts and hes dyed her hair some weird colours but they always roll with it. 

they always stuck up for one another at school and neither was afraid to start a fight (gladys was the only one likely to win, however)

gladys actually taught fred how to punch after she watched him almost shatter his hand on some bullies in grade nine.. her dad taught her how to do it the right way so she passed it on :") fred decking hiram was all her doing

they both mocked hiram relentlessly... it was their thing

they went to mcdonalds drunk all the time... and often they walked through the drive-through or went through on fred's bicycle with gladys riding on the handlebars. they were dum dums. 

they tried going trick or treating together when they were both WAY too old

fred had a job at the movie theatre for about three weeks one summer (he got fired after he tried to work a shift and also have 2 dates at the same time... dont ask. also an incident with the slushie machine.) and would always sneak gladys in for free. they also liked to sneak into the projector room at the drive in when fp was working 

fred hated the smell of cigarettes and hated them double after artie died so gladys was always very good about opening windows and not smoking right in front of him but she also lent him a bunch that he could hold unlit and look cool and took pictures of him with them 

gladys took a lot of pictures!! she had a polaroid and she and fred were always goofing off with it and they both had stacks and stacks of them. fred paid for film. 

they both had big appetites (though not as big as fp) and loved to share a huge messy platter of pops biggest breakfast. fp, usually sitting across from them, could eat one all on his own. 

fred was always admiring gladys' rings and she lent them to him a lot.

he was the first person she showed her nipple piercings to... he wasnt expecting her to pull up her shirt first thing he was shook. 

they both love doing dumb roughousing  and theyre always trying to do weird gymnastics lifts and stuff with each other for no reason or theyre initiating arm wresling or playing "the floor is lava" while whoever else is in the room is just trying to watch the movie... theyre so dumb i love them

gladys has to go easy on fred with arm wrestling because his arms are so skinny... she calls him noodle. but affectionately. oH SHE HAS SO MANY NICKNAMES FOR HIM.... 

they're both impulsive hot-headed dummies in different ways so they take turns being the voice of reason... very often fred will have to talk gladys down and keep her out of trouble and then later gladys will be the one trying to keep fred from doing some dumb shit.. its a partnership. 

she's probably the only girl in fred's life that he hasn't felt any kind of romantic inclination toward which is weird for everyone and he's always getting asked if they kissed yet (for the record they did once... but it wasnt fred's idea. i think briana told me once gladys just walked up to fred at a party and kissed him to see what all the fuss was about and then said "not bad" and walked away amen bless.)

Gladys and Fred throwing a surprise birthday for FP on his 18th birthday

THEY DID DO THIS! THEY DID! TWICE! @fredsythe

I’m not gonna check the calendars cuz god knows what year FP turned 18 anymore but let’s say for argument’s sake that FP’s 18th fell on a weekday. The weekend before they threw him a rager at Pop’s with all of his school friends, and Fred was in charge of luring FP there on time by deciding he just HAD to have a milkshake right that moment.... it turned out it was harder to get FP to stay away from Pop’s until the time was right than it was to get him to go there.... FP was really hungry right after school. 

Then on his actual birthday, the two of them got up early in the morning and made the worst mess of Fred or Gladys’ kitchen baking him a birthday cake from a mix... it was falling apart and slopped together and the icing job was horrendous but it was the best cake FP ever tasted. They woke him up in bed (he’d spent the night the night before) and sang happy birthday and made him blow out the candle and then they all ate cake in their pyjamas and hugged and kissed him and after school they had their first threeway 

There were a lot of days FP wasn’t sure if he was going to make it to 18... so it was a very special occasion.

if gladys fp & fred had been friends since they were kids, and if gladys joined the serpents before fp, imagine fred asking her to look out for fp when he joined and make sure he didnt go off and do anything reckless... and maybe one time fp got hurt really bad in a fight or something serpent related and maybe he ended up in the hospital or gladys brought him home to patch him up herself, either way she called fred and he was crying and yelling at her that she was supposed to keep him safe (1/2)

(2/2) and normally gladys would be fighting back at anyone yelling at her but its fred and he looks so broken and upset because fps face looks real bad and he's not awake yet so gladys just lets fred yell at her and eventually he stops and hes just sobbing and falls against her and she holds him while he cries.... just some thoughts

this makes me so emo oh man... it’s impossible to be mad at fred under any circumstances but fred’s whole yelling schtick is undermined by the tears in his eyes and gladys is just feeling sadder and sadder the angrier he gets. and of course he needs comfort more than he’s angry and he just dissolves into crying and lets gladys hold him... there’s nothing she can say to make it better but she’s doing her best and telling fred that fp’s tough and fred raises his head and snaps “he shouldn’t have to be tough” with his face all blotchy and damn if that doesn’t hurt... 

eventually they end up sitting down and freds curled up against gladys like a little kid with their mom and gladys is wishing she had someone to curl up against but fp still hasn’t woken up

FRED GETTING LONELY AT NIGHT SO HE WALKS OVER NEXT DOOR IN HIS PAJAMAS AND HE ENDS UP IN BED WITH GLADYS AND FP 🤧 FRED AND FP TEXTING OR TALKING ON THE PHONE AND FP CAN TELL SOMETHINGS UP WITH FRED EVEN IF HE DOESNT SAY ANYTHING SO FP GOES OVER TO SPEND THE NIGHT AND KEEP HIM COMPANY 😭 they shouldve all just moved in together it wouldve been easier 😢

as compensation for the stupid "scream & shout" question... what does gladys think of when she hears "twist and shout?" (the beatles song)

it wasnt stupid!

twist and shout automatically conjures up images of ferris bueller because fred used to make her and fp watch it all the damn time but also there was one saturday afternoon sophomore year at pops when fred and fp took her out for lunch bc she had been feeling down over a girl she had been seeing, who she wasnt allowed to see anymore (more like the girl wasnt allowed to see her. it was messy) and the boys had been trying everything to cheer her up and nothing was working. so fred got up to the jukebox trying to find some inspiration and wouldnt you know... there was twist and shout. 

so of course now the seed had been planted. he knew what needed to be done. he casually strolled on back to their table and asked gladys to get up and dance with him, knowing full well she was gonna say no. so he shrugged his shoulders and said fine, hopped up on the table instead and start belting, doing the dance. customers were staring. pop was yelling at him to get down, fp was awestruck but like when is he not when it comes to fred thats besides the point.

fred held his hand out and said he wasnt stopping til gladys danced with him. and she tried to keep her resolve. arms folding across her chest, scowl on her face. but its really hard to resist fred when he’s hamming it up some it wasnt long before she rolled her eyes and bit back a smile and grabbed his hand and hopped up on the table with him and they were both twisting and shouting. of course fp joined in too. almost broke the damn table with the three of them on it and pop looked like he was about to have an aneurism which just added on to the hilarity. 

the song ended and the three of them got the hell out of there before pop had a chance to kill them but they were laughing, gladys the hardest. it felt good. she gave fred a big hug and kiss on the cheek and thanked him for cheering her up

@fredsythe  I have a plotline for you to consider. 

When Gladys and FP first started seeing each other as more than friends Fred was totally oblivious and they didnt know how to really broach it with him because the three of them had been the three amigos all their lives and they wanted to find the right approach. So they didn’t tell him right away and Fred never noticed anything amiss because he’s always walking around with his head in the clouds. 

Then pretty soon after that Fred needed a double date for him and Hermione for some reason, and he was begging and begging FP to do it, but FP was going on and on about how he didn’t like Hermione’s friends and he didn’t want to. So Fred tried to compromise by saying, “why don’t you bring Gladys? She’s a girl! You get along with her! I promise if you act like you and Gladys are dating and bring her out to dinner I’ll pay for everything and I’ll give you ten bucks.” 

FP said make it twenty and he had a deal, so Fred paid FP twenty bucks to take out Gladys and act like they were dating. When FP and Gladys were already dating. And then FP and Gladys got tipsy at the event and forgot they were supposed to be pretending to pretend so they were all over each other kissing and groping and Fred had absolutely no idea what to do he was shook to his very core. Until they told him about two days later he just thought they were really really dedicated actors.
