Love how the anime shows Eugene and Shin's days in the school, along with their turbulence with Marcel. Idk if the anime will show how Eugene thinks of Shin tho. In the novel, Eugene is anxious because he shares the same race as the ones who drove Shin out of his home, and thinks Shin won't befriend him. Obviously, Shin doesn't care about it since they become close friends anyway.

Cool decision for the anime to have Eugene and Frederica meet before their enlistment instead of after. Not that it significantly changes anything on the plot, but the feeling of loss is just greater that way.

Eugene's dying scene is much more brutal than Shirabii's illustration in the novel. Eugene's face becomes lopsided. It reminds me of when I draw and can't get the anatomy right, except within the current context it's a thousand times worse. The anime emphasizes the fact that Eugene is not only cut in half, but also missing his hands, by showing Shin looking around to find the locket. The novel explains how Shin drags Eugene, with that messed up state, out of his Vánagandr, probably the same split-second scene when Shin holds Eugene in the anime.

What makes it worse is their exchange. In the novel, Shin and Eugene talk a bit before the former mercy kills the latter. In the anime, it's played horrifyingly realistic. Eugene can only whisper in grand total of FIVE words very slowly, and every word literally takes all his breath away. And the picture in the locket just makes everything extra painful.

And it shows Shin being very kind, because he is very patient to listen to what the dying Eugene whispers and finds his locket somewhere in the vicinity. Now, add to the fact that he has been doing this exact same thing for years.

I think this is the first time the anime shows on screen in detail the devastating state of a dying soldier? In the first half, all the deaths are no less violent, but except for Kujo, an unnamed processor in Kurena’s flashback (both only faces shown, bodies partially obscured), Daiya (only charred, still intact hand shown) and Rei (already skeleton when found), we aren’t shown the faces and bodies of the dying ones. It’s kind of fitting since deaths are very common in 86 and they barely have means to die properly. Now cut to the Federacy which is peaceful inside but still struggling with the war outside, Eugene’s death slaps the fact that no, dying in a war is not pretty.

Once again I will praise the anime’s decision to go with chronological story-telling, particularly with Eugene’s matter. We get to know him from being a kind Alba stranger, to Shin’s friend who sticks with him throughout the school, to finally die at Shin’s hand. By the time of his death, viewers at least already have some knowledge about him and maybe are already invested in him and therefore get gut-punched.
