SKIP AND LOAFER #5 once again validates Takamatsu's manga series as one of the most genuine and sensitive, yet humorously pragmatic titles on the market.

Whenever I visit Austin, TX, I visit Book People to read their shelf talkers and to buy a great book I've never heard of before. This was my pick this year. (And believe me it takes a lot to get me to pick up a teen romance manga. Stop by and see the shelf talker if you aren't moved by my pitch for the book -- it's on a table on the first floor across from the science fiction and fantasy, if I'm remembering correctly.)

Iwakaru Mitsuki is fifteen, and she just moved to Tokyo from a tiny town in Ishikawa to attend high school. She's going to live with her aunt, who seems worried, but Mitsuki brushes aside her concerns; she thinks her first day will be perfect. Of course that's not what happens. But a very good-looking young man named Sousuke, late for the opening ceremony himself, spots her in the train station, lost and afraid of the crowds and "hiding" against the wall. When she lashes out at him, he doesn't seem to mind. And then she vomits after giving a speech at the ceremony. As school goes on we see how awkward and out of her depth Mitsuki is in some ways (it's very endearing) while Sousuke remains to be a decent guy who wants to be her friend (and maybe more) (this made me like him, too).

My wife would disagree with this, but Skip and Loafer reminded me of Yotsuba&! in a way. I think reading a book about a student trying to adapt to life in Tokyo while my daughter starts her study abroad time there activated my dad genes the same way reading Yotsuba&! does.

Third Volume of 'Young Don't Play Fighting Games' Released in English

The third volume of Eri Ejima's comedy Yuri series Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games (Tai Ari Deshita. ~Ojо̄-sama wa Kakutо̄ Gēmu Nante Shinai~) is now available in English. Seven Seas Entertainment released this manga digitally on September 27 and in paperback on October 4.

The series follows Aya, a transfer student to an elite private school for prim and proper young ladies. She is determined to fit in and hide her plebian passed as a fight game enthusiast from her prestigious new classmates. However, one night she discovers that the school's star student, "Shirayuri-sama," harbors a similar secret obsession with fight games. Quickly becoming rivals, the girls spend their days acting like the perfect students while sneaking around at night to play forbidden games and evade discovery by the Dormitory Affairs Committee.

The publisher describes the newest volume:

Aya, Mio, and their new friends Yuu and Tamaki are prim-and-proper young ladies by day, but when night falls, they turn to bloodthirsty hardcore gaming! They’ve set their sights on a huge fighting game tournament called EX Japan, where pros and amateurs alike gather for the ultimate test of skill. With so many experienced fighters out for blood, can the girls hope to get the results they want? From qualifying pools to grand finals, it’s bound to be a wild ride!

Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games parodies elements from classic school Yuri works, such as the setting of an elite all-girls school and Mio's role as star student. It received a mostly positive reception for its incorporation of horror and action imagery and strong premise. YuriMother gave the first volume a score of 8/10.

The fourth volume of Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games will be released in English in November. Media Factor will publish the fifth bound volume in Japanese on October 21. The series is currently serialized in Monthly Comic Flapper. An anime based on the series was announced in January 2021, but since then, no additional information about the adaptation has been released.

The series is translated by Nicole Frasik with lettering by Vanessa Satone, proofreading by Kurestin Armada, and editing by J.P. Sulivan.

Manga Review: 'Skip and Loafer' #6

The weeks and months trickle by, but romance is none the easier to navigate. Spring has arrived. The school year is almost up. And it's time for Mitsumi and her friends to prick and pry their way through Valentine's Day, mindful of a few errant contemplations on relational compatibility. SKIP AND LOAFER v6 is a low-key volume with a handful of deliciously meaningful chapters.

The book's biggest emotional lift comes early, with two episodes dedicated to viewing the eponymous February pseudo-holiday through the eyes of one Mika Egashira, the try-hard stylish girl. Mika's increasing emotional vulnerability is the manga's most visible character arc thus far. Valentine's Day, unsurprisingly, pushes the girl to the brink, due in no small part to a few snide comments from Tsukasa Mukai, Sousuke's childhood buddy. Tsukasa is trying to play both sides of the conversation (e.g., girls are catty and relationship-obsessed; girls should only pursue relationships that are mutually appealing), which leads two a few blow-up scenes in which Mika flashes her true colors: embarrassed teen, fierce socialite, ambitious young woman, resilient best friend.

SKIP AND LOAFER v6 tiptoes around the possibility of Mitsumi and Sousuke chatting awkwardly about sharing chocolates and whatnot, and that's probably for the best. Too many comedy-romance manga have done this before. And to the reader's benefit, several pages are offered to a secondary character: Kento Yamada, the excitable classmate who pines for a relationship just to have one.

Kento admits he doesn't "get" girls, and longs more for friendship than a relationship, per se. But his interaction with Mitsumi, who promptly puts the young man in his place, is a solid example of how this comic book invests its creative energy into observing how characters' growth ably feed off one another. Funnily enough, Kenta may be an idiot, but he's also sincere. He doesn't mind being "the loveable rascal," but has some trouble adapting to women who consistently endeavor to hold their own. It's an interesting, realistic dynamic. The boys in this comic book mumble and stutter and lose their train of thought; their confidence wavers on the wind, impulsive enough to be genuine, but lacking the ambition one might credit as purely pretentious.

Another lovely volume of another lovely manga. Honestly, if this volume only included the first two chapters, focusing on Mika's emotional hardiness, SKIP AND LOAFER v6 would have been worth the purchase. And yet, the manga's swiveling view of growing up and falling in love, and preparing for the worst and hoping for the best, from multiple characters at multiple life stages, is as rewarding as ever.
