The One with the Trifle Pt 1
Pretend it’s Thanksgiving please and thank you. Flashback to Eddie’s first Thanksgiving after moving to the city. (If you’re a friends fan or know this episode, this will only be about the trifle bit and not the secret revealing section at the end of the episode. That will be coming at another time.)
Robin is standing in the kitchen with a large glass container in front of her. She’s carefully reading the instructions of a cookbook, pulling out ingredients as she goes. Steve comes out of the bathroom and walks over to the kitchen.
“Are you sure you got the dessert this year? We both know what happened last Christmas,” he asks, again. For the third time.
Robin rolls her eyes. “That was a fluke. I think I really got it this time. And, nothing is going in the oven, just stove top.”
“You say that like it makes it better. I’ve seen you burn water before.”
“No, that was dry pasta that I forgot to add the right amount of water to, so it dried up and then burned. But that was years ago. Now I know how to use the stovetop.”
Steve sighs. “If you need anything, I mean anything, I’ll be right across the hall helping Nancy with the rest of the food. No question is too stupid to ask me.”
“We both know that is a lie.”
“What are you making anyway?” Steve leans over the counter to see the cookbook.
Robin picks it up to show him. “It’s a trifle, from this old British cookbook I found at the thrift store. Cute, right.”
“Yeah, if you don’t fuck it up.”
Robin smacks him with the book. “Out, out. Go help Nancy and stop making fun of me.”
“I don’t think I’ll ever stop making fun of you, but whatever.” Steve walks across the hall to Nancy’s apartment. She’s in the kitchen basting the turkey while Eddie, Argyle, and Jonathan are sitting on the couch watching the parade.
“Steve, thank God. I needed someone who,” she turns her head to the living room, “actually knows what they’re doing.” She stares at the back of Eddie’s head.
Eddie makes a large gesture. “I didn’t know it was possible to fuck up cutting green beans.”
“It is when you cut them like this.” Nancy holds up a green bean sliced down the middle lengthways.
Steve winces. “How the hell did you think this is how you cut green beans.”
Eddie stands up. “That’s it. I’m going to hang out with Robin, at least she won’t make fun of me.”
“You sure about that,” Argyle snorts.
“She is just as bad as cooking as Eddie apparently is, it’s honestly fifty-fifty with how this goes.” Steve starts to peel the bowl of potatoes.
Eddie gives them the finger before shutting the door.
“Speaking of,” Jonathan turns to face the kitchen, “Do we have a backup dessert for when Robin eventually ends up burning hers?”
Nancy gives Steve a death glare. “Do you want to explain or should I?”
Steve sighs. “I had parent teacher conferences yesterday and didn’t have time to bake anything.”
“Because.”
Another sigh. “Because I went on a date with this girl I’ve been talking to for a few weeks.”
Argyle stiffens, having gotten close to Eddie in the past few months. Knowing how he feels about Steve. “I didn’t know you were seeing anyone.”
Steve shrugs. “It’s not that serious to be honest. We’ve only been on the one date.”
“And now we will end up eating whatever Robin ends up burning because someone couldn’t push it off until next week.” Nancy angrily jabs at the bread she is cutting.
“Woah, Nance, take a deep breath. Your parents aren’t coming this year, it’s just us. There’s nothing to stress about.” Steve stops peeling the potatoes to try and rub her shoulder, only to get his hand swatted away.
“Yeah,” Argyle agrees. “I’ve eaten plenty of Robin’s burnt cookies, and I’m still here. Some of them were pretty good actually.”
Steve gets a text from Robin.
Robin: Quick questions, how do I tell if the butter is browned
Robin sends an image
Steve: About five minutes before it looks like that
Robin: Shit
A while later, Steve is watching the stove while Nancy takes a break on the couch. Eddie opens the door, barely poking his head through before calling Steve into the hall. He calls Nancy back into the kitchen before heading out into the hall with Eddie.
“So,” Eddie draws out as Steve closes the door. “We have a bit of a problem.”
“Oh God, what did she do?”
“There’s beef involved.”
Steve’s eyes bug out. “What? Beef? How, I thought she was making a trifle.”
“She mostly is,” Eddie says. “Just this cookbook is the weirdest one ever where the recipes are mixed in with each other instead of in their own sections. And it’s an old book, and some of the pages were stuck together. So, turn the page to get to the rest of the recipe, and it’s a recipe for shepherd’s pie.”
Steve makes a horrified face. “Nancy is going to kill me. Like straight up murder. I will be dead tomorrow.”
“Why? Robin’s the one making the dessert. Shouldn’t she be the dead one.”
“That’s the thing. I always have a backup dessert. It’s a little game we play each year. Robin wants to try to bake again but leaves it in a little too long and it gets burnt. Or accidently adds salt instead of sugar. Or thinks she knows better than the recipe and adds too much flour. So, then I come in with another dessert for the people who don’t like to eat burnt cake. She isn’t the best at cooking, or baking, but she tries, and it brings her so much joy, so we let her do it and eat the dessert. But then mine is like the palate cleanser. Except this year there isn’t a palate cleanser and we’re going to eat a trifle with beef in it.” Steve takes in a deep breath, trying not to hyperventilate.
Eddie nods, trying to process everything. “That’s kind of sweet that you guys eat messed up baked goods just to make her happy.”
“Yeah well, it’s Robin. No one really likes to make her upset. Which she will be if we let her know that this is a major fuck up.”
“So we’re going to eat the beef dessert thing. There’s fruit and custard involved.” Eddie makes a disgusted face.
Steve gags at the thought. “Yeah, yep, yes. We are. I’m going to do damage control, you keep her happy. And if the pages become unstuck before the beef gets added, no one will be mad at you for interfering.”
“It’s already been done. There is no stopping it.”
“Alright then. I’m going to go get murdered, it’s been nice knowing you.”
Eddie nods before going back into Robin’s apartment. Steve takes a deep breath before walking back into the apartment.
“What did Eddie want?” Nancy asks.
“Nothing that important, Jon can I talk to you for a second.” Steve rushes past Nancy and pulls Jonathan into Eddie’s room. “We have a problem.”
Jonathan adjusts his shirt. “One that you had to physically pull me into a bedroom for.”
“Yes. Robin mixed up two recipes and now there’s beef in an English Trifle.” Steve makes a face like he’s bracing for impact.
Jonathan stands there silent for a few seconds, blinking. “It was nice knowing you.” He pats Steve on the shoulder.
Steve rolls his eyes. “I am already very aware of the fact that I am dead, but we do in fact have to eat the beef trifle.”
“No we don’t,” Jonathan says with disbelief.
“It’s Robin,” Steve shrugs. “We have to.”
Jonathan nods, pained. “We do. Remind me to get super high before dessert comes out, it will help it all go down. Hell, I might like it.”
“You mind telling Argyle about this, I have to go tell Nancy.”
“I’ll go guard the knives. Good luck.”
Steve and Jonathan leave the room. Jonathan going over to Argyle and whispering something in his ear, Argyle seeming indifferent to the news. Steve takes a deep breath before asking Nancy to talk in her room.
“What happened?” Nancy cuts to the chase, crossing her arms.
“Robin. Lovely, sweet, kind, sometimes confused when it comes to baking, Robin. May have mixed up two recipes when making the dessert.”
Nancy takes the first part well. “That doesn’t seem too bad. They were both desserts, right?”
“That’s the thing. Apparently, this book has the recipes mixed up and not in sections. So when the pages were stuck together, one page was an English trifle, and the other was a Shapard’s pie.”
“What,” Nancy yells. “How can those to be mixed up?”
“I don’t know, I wasn’t there. I was here helping you with the rest of the food.” Steve takes a step back.
Nancy follows after her, slapping him on the arm. “I can’t believe this. Robin is going to be crushed when we won’t eat it. Then she’ll be mortified when she realizes her mistake.”
Steve makes a pained face.
“Steve, we’re not going to eat this are we?” Nancy’s death glare sets in again.
“It’s Robin, of course we have to.”
Nancy starts hitting him again mixed in with anger about his mess up. When she calms down, she says, “I am doing this, not for you, but for Robin. Because I cannot even begin to think about how she’s going to react when she figures this all out.”
Nancy leaves the room without saying another word. Steve goes back to the living room and flops on the couch, being dramatic about the nonexistent bruises that Nancy gave him. She did not hit him as hard as she could have, or wanted to.
“Get up you big baby and get your ass back into the kitchen,” Nancy says from the kitchen.
Steve turns his head towards Jonathan and Argyle. “You know, sometimes I wonder why we broke up in college. And then I am reminded why.” He stands and goes to the kitchen.

The One with the Gossip
T | 5k
Part 8 of the Friends AU series!
read the last part on AO3 | start from the beginning
"Settle something for me Buckley," he said, and Eddie may have mumbled 'thank god' at the distraction, making Bobby smile. "Am I a gossip?" "Absolutely," he nodded, not skipping a beat as Chim's mouth dropped open in offence. A loud 'ha' came from Hen over on the couch. "Well that's rude," he said, and Buck shrugged. "I don't think I spread that much gossip, do I?" "On Monday you told me that Josh from dispatch went on a disastrous hot date on the weekend," Eddie said, raising an eyebrow at him. "A few weeks ago you said that Ravi was thinking of getting a motorcycle," Bobby said with a mischievous grin. "That's just general conversation!" Chim protested. "And that you thought it was a terrible idea and that we'd be getting a call out to save him in no time," Bobby gave him a look of mock disapproval. "Yeah, and last week you told me Eddie was having trouble in paradise with his new man," Buck said, making Eddie's brow furrow as he looked over at Chim. "I'm not having any troubles," he said, making Buck jump back in. "Never said I believed him," he grinned, sharing a sparkle in his eye with Eddie that everyone else missed.

[series now cross-posted to ao3! stay tuned for more! ] Have been watching a lot FRIENDS lately bc its one of my and my gf's comfort shows and, of course, i cannot stop thinking about Stranger Things-ifying the hell out of it. the vision came to me SO CLEARLY [PART 2]
Sitting around the coffee shop that is basically a second home to the gang.
Nancy sits on the chair across from Argyle, one leg tucked under her, legal pad balancing on the arm, a pen being held between her pointer and middle finger, tapping incessantly on the pad. The other hand tucked into a fist and holding up her chin.
Argyle sits with his legs draped over the arm of the oversized chair, flipping through the latest Steven King book, one arm perched behind his head.
Jonathan has the NYT crossword in his lap, Robin peering over his shoulder, making him nervous.
A normal Saturday afternoon routine for the group of twentysomethings. The rain from outside softly hits the windows nearby, complimenting the soft chatter and gentle clanking of dishes.
But Robin can only seem to focus on Nancy's damn tapping.
"Nance?"
"Hm?"
"I'm gonna need you to stop tapping. I'm trying to beat Jonathan's puzzle."
"Just take it," he hands the paper over to her, annoyed.
"No! It's more fun when it feels like I'm beating you."
Jonathan looks over at Nancy, who is staring blankly at the wooden support beam a few feet away.
"What's going on Nance?"
"Nothing." Her pitch high, grabbing the rest of the groups attention, so much so that they all inch closer to her chair.
"Sounds like a whole lotta nothing," Argyle pulls a nearby chair up next to hers flipping it around and resting his forearms on the back of it.
Robin sits on the ground next to her and Jonathan takes a seat on the coffee table right in front of her.
"Fine!" She takes a look over her shoulder, toward the front door. "I have a date."
"Why are we whispering?" Argyle asks, also whispering.
"Because you know who could walk in any second."
"Why are we whispering and speaking in codes?" Jonathan asks, still whispering.
And as an act of divine timing, the front door to the coffee shop opens, and they all turn their heads to see a slightly damp Eddie shake his hair out and shed his leather jacket in one fell swoop. His face fixed in the same frown that's plagued his face for the last two weeks.
"Hey," the group says in unison, not moving a muscle from where they're still crowded around Nancy.
"What did I say about that tone," Eddie whines, flopping himself down on the couch that previously held Jon and Robin.
"How're you doing?" Robin asks, shifting her body, still sitting on the floor, toward him.
"All of her stuff is gone which means that all of my stuff is gone."
No one says a thing. Not even when the sound of a ceramic coffee cup shatters somewhere in the distance.
"Eddie?"
"What?"
"I don't mean to sound insensitive dude, but shouldn't you be a little less depressed considering... " Argyle trails off.
"Considering what?"
"Considering you're the one that left her?" Robin finishes the thought that everyone is having.
"I didn't leave her." He scoffs.
"No, but when you tell your long-term girlfriend about recently discovering that you're gay, one might see that as you being the one to end that relationship."
"We've been over this." He balls up his jacket and shoves his face into the wet leather. The group share a look, Nancy gesturing to Eddie's state as if to say this is why I'm not talking about the date.
He chucks the balled up jacket at Jonathan, who kicks his feet out in surprise as he catches it with his chest. Eddie's hands are now on either side of his face.
"The love was there! I could've loved her if..."
"If she was someone else?"
He deflates, lets his arms slump down and his shoulders do the same.
"Eddie, my friend, my pal, listen up." Argyle moves seats for the third time, now squeezing himself into the space between Eddie and the arm rest on the couch, draping his arm over his shoulders.
"You have just entered a whole new world, my man. So, you're gay? We're in New York City, so is everyone! Welcome home! All that love you were ready to give to Michelle? You get to hold onto that and give it to someone else. Someone who makes your heart sing."
"But I knew her just as long as I knew you guys." He whines, again, gesturing to Robin, Nancy and Jonathan. "It was easy. It was safe. How am I ever gonna find romance with someone? Where we have an established - I don't know - thing! A connection! A history! How?"
Eddie stares at them like he expects them to answer, forcing the rest of the group to share glances, let the air settle with Eddie's words.
The front door flies open just as a roaring thunder booms overhead, making for a dramatic entrance.
Robin's the first one to swivel her head toward the ruckus, the only one who has a perfect view of the person who burst into the shop.
A man dressed in a tux, drenched, like, just hopped out of a swimming pool drenched. Fighting with his bow tie with one hand and running his other hand through the unforgettable head of hair that sends Robin right back to Hawkins, Indiana. Back to the summer before her senior year.
Huh?
Unable to move a muscle in her body, she watches him clumsily go up to the counter and ask for her and Nancy, by name. The sound of her name sends her up to her feet and pushes her toward the man. An air of chaos surrounds him, drawing an offense amount of curiosity out of Robin as she finds her words.
"Steve Harrington?"
He turns around, his face lights up, and he does the weirdest thing.
He hugs her.
She remains stiff as he pulls back from the hug, hands still on either side of her arms.
They were buddies that summer scooping ice cream at the mall. Nothing crazy, or maybe even that memorable, but they started the summer as acquaintances at best and left as friends.
But then he left for college and she stayed and they never spoke again. A few run-ins here and there. But nothing substantial.
"I knew I'd find you here, I remembered that the last time I was in the city I ran into you guys and you're here!" He sounds drunk, but also like he drank a vat of espresso.
Clearly, it was substantial enough for him to come looking for her. Dressed in a tux soaking wet?
"And you're here, overdressed." She says, taking him in, unable to unscrew the confused look from her face.
Is that a boutonnières?
Oh no. Oh fuck.
"Steve?" Jonathan and Nancy say in unison as Robin brings him over to the couch.
Robin thinks Eddie might have summoned the ghost of hopeless high school crushes past, the way Eddie looks like he's just seen a ghost.

The One Where Everybody Finds Out (About Eddie and Steve)
Jonathan
There had been some weird things happening under Jonathan's nose, he had noticed them at the back of his mind but, being a chill and high dude most of the time, he didn't think anything weird of it.
Yeah, Steve was spending a lot more time at his and Eddie's place, Eddie talked a lot more about Steve and they both were dating someone that hadn't been introduced to their friend group yet, but Jonathan just shrugged and accepted them as facts.
Then he had found a strange amount of hair products in their shared bathroom and casually mentioned it to Eddie, who basically freaked out on him and shrieked "what if I care about my curls? are you the bathroom police?" and yeah, Jonathan was chill and all, but that was fucking weird.
A while later, at Steve and Robin's place, Jonathan was able to put the pieces together.
«Robin, did you take my hair products? I can't find them anywhere»
«Why would I have them? plus, didn't you take them to your mysterious girlfriend's place last night? maybe you left them there.»
Jonathan's shocked expression as he looked back and forth between Eddie and Steve was enough to tell that he knew.
Eddie had to do some damage control, fast.
«Roomie, can I talk to you for a second?»
Nancy
Nancy loves Robin, she really does. That doesn't mean she can't be mad at her for being late.
«I'm sorry Nance, she's probably stuck in traffic. I got stuff to do but you can wait here of course!» Steve gave her one more apologetic smile and then disappeared into his bedroom.
Nancy had tried to stay put and pass the time by reading a magazine, but she was so mad she couldn't help but pick up the phone to try and reach out to Robin, see if at least she had left work.
She didn't expect at all to hear Steve's private conversation.
«I miss you too. I'll sneak out in a few hours, I'll tell Robin I'm doing laundry.»
And surely she didn't expect to hear Eddie say «laundry? is that my new nickname?»
She dropped the phone, shocked. Eddie and Steve? Eddie and Steve?
She needed to tell someone, anyone. As she rushed out of the apartment, she almost collided with Jonathan, who was running out of his apartment across the hall.
«Jonathan, great! I have a secret I need to share-»
«No! No secrets please, I have way too many and I hate keeping them!»
Nancy eyed him, suspiciously «what if I know what you know?»
«No, that’s not possible.»
«So, you didn’t happen to hear Eddie’s phone call just know?»
Jonathan looked at her with a mixture of relief and shock, he pointed at her «You know!»
«And you know??» she replied, «since when?»
«Since forever dude! They’ve been driving me crazy.»
Robin
Argyle’s move to the city was just a few weeks away and he and Jonathan had yet to find a place that would be good for the both of them. Eddie wouldn’t have minded adding Argyle to the lease but the apartment wasn’t big enough for three people -and it was proven by Argyle living there for the days he was supposed to do apartment hunting-, so the only option was to look for a new place.
Thankfully a nice apartment across from their building had been opened for renting. The best part? Steve and Robin’s place was clearly visible from the living room. A feature that Robin would come to regret that day.
Jonathan was busy at work, so she and Nancy offered to accompany Argyle for the house tour. He fell in love with the place as soon as he entered.
As he was checking out the bedrooms and Nancy the bathroom, Robin looked out of the living room window.
«Oh my God, I see Steve and Eddie, hi guys!!» she waved at them excitedly, but the happiness died quickly as they started kissing and taking each other’s clothes off.
«oh my god oh my god OH MY GOD!!! Eddie and Steve? Eddie and Steve!! Oh my God Eddie and Steve!!» she was screaming and couldn't stop looking at her best friend making out with a guy, with Eddie of all people.
Nancy had rushed back as she heard her screams and she was panicking too.
«Nancy! It's Eddie and Steve!! Oh my God, Eddie and Steve!! Why am I still looking?» she screamed again as Eddie pushed Steve against the window glass, giving them a perfect view of Steve's naked back.
«oh shit, my eyes!! MY EYES!!» she kept screaming as she turned around.
«Robin, you have to shut up!» Nancy seemed to be panicked too, but for very different reasons.
«But Eddie and Steve-»
«I know! I've known for a while!!» she sounded exasperated.
«You know??»
«Yes, I know! And Jonathan knows but Argyle doesn't so you have to shut up!»
Robin had no idea how she could pretend she did not just witness her best friend getting busy with one of their closest friends, a guy.
Argyle emerged from the second bedroom «have you guys been screaming? is something happening outside?» he made a step towards the window and Robin screamed again.
«We're... just so happy you might get this apartment!» Robin lied and started jumping and screaming her fake excitement, Nancy could do nothing but join her.
Argyle smiled wildly at them and joined the jumps and the screams.
Argyle
Jonathan hated keeping secrets from Argyle. Actually, there were no secrets kept between them, except this one. But Eddie and Steve had begged him to tell no one, so there wasn't much of a choice.
After Nancy and Robin had found out, he was relieved because, finally, he would be able to tell Argyle.
Except that the girls, especially Robin, weren't too happy about this secret and decided to mess with their unaware friends.
«I can't believe you forced Nancy to flirt with Eddie,» Jonathan said, looking at Nancy as she twirled a strand of her hair flirtatiously. He couldn't see Eddie's face from where he was sitting but there was no doubt he was shocked.
«I didn't force her to do nothing! She's in with the plan. Listen, They've been lying to us, Steve has been lying to me, for months now. We're just having a little fun! Eddie will freak out, admit their fling and that's it» Robin made it sound so easy he hoped she was right.
----
It wasn't easy at all, Jonathan thought, under Steve and Eddie's inquisitive looks.
Nancy had come onto Eddie too strong -she had felt his bicep and grabbed his ass for crying it out loud- and that resulted in them guessing she knew about their thing.
Jonathan had, unfortunately, let slip out that Robin also knew.
«Robin knows too?» Steve sounded sad as he asked, but then the sadness turned quickly to anger «I can't believe that little shit! She's messing with us? fuck no, we're messing with them!»
As Steve and Eddie were coming up with a counter-plan, Jonathan projected himself to two weeks in the future, when he and Argyle will finally be living together, hopefully with no secrets involved.
----
Nancy put the phone down, looking distraught.
«Eddie just asked me to come over and feel his bicep and more! I can't believe he would cheat on Steve!»
«I don't believe it either» Robin turned to Jonathan, who was very busy looking at his shoes.
«Jonathan, do they know that we know?» he couldn't say anything back which was enough for the girls.
«I can't believe they're messing with us!»
«Well, they don't know that we know they know we know!» Robin exclaimed, «call Eddie back and set the date, we're going to war.»
----
Nancy hadn't planned to go that far with the messing around.
But now there she was, inside Eddie and Jonathan’s apartment, pretending to be on a date.
It's clear that they both know what it's going on, that they're impossibly uncomfortable with it and that they're too competitive to drop the act.
After an awkward small talk, Eddie attacks «should we move this to the bedroom?»
«Really?» Nancy is caught by the surprise but quickly recovers «I mean, first I wanna take off all my clothes and have you rub lotion all on me.»
Her counterattack is pretty effective, Eddie looks horrified as he replies with «sounds great, let me go grab that lotion» before running into the bathroom. Nancy thinks she has won until Eddie comes back with a lotion in his hands.
He still looks extremely uncomfortable but he smiles and says «wow, I'm so happy we're gonna have all the sex!»
«You should be...» she quickly thinks of something that could make him break character «I'm very... bendy?»
Eddie makes a face and Nancy can't blame him. She hopes he will give up soon.
«I'm gonna kiss you now!» she says, almost threatening.
«Not if I kiss you first!» he replies, slowly coming closer to her.
They take their time placing their hands on each other, still leaving a ton of space between them, and there's nothing left for them but to kiss. They go for a peck, the unsexiest most awkward kiss they both had in their life.
Eddie pulls away first «okay okay stop! you win!! I can't have sex with you!»
Nancy is ready to celebrate, she just needs Eddie to admit he's sleeping with Steve «and why not?» she grins.
«Because I'm in love with Steve!»
«You what??»
Steve comes out of the bathroom, Robin and Jonathan get in from the front door, they all heard him loud and clear.
«That's right, you little shits!» he points at Nancy, Robin, and Jonathan «I love» he points at himself «him!» then points at Steve.
He repeats it a couple of times «I. Love. Him. I. Love Him. I. Lo-» Steve forces him to stop by grabbing him by his vest and kissing him.
«I love you too,» he says, grinning at him.
«Oh my God, you guys!!! I thought you were just doing it, I didn't know you were in love!» Robin exclaimed, running towards them to hug them both.
«Now I can tell Argyle when he comes next week right? Everybody knows!» Jonathan looks relieved.
«Actually, the kids are coming here the same day and Dustin doesn't know yet, so we would appreciate it if you kept the secret...»
Jonathan glares at them «I'm telling him over the phone, right now.»
After a quick phone call to California, it turns out that Argyle already knew.
«Yeah babe, haven’t they been together since we went to London? I thought everybody knew.»
Jonathan bangs his head against the wall.
BONUS
Dustin:
«Guys! this place is so cool!» Will is saying as they're going around Argyle and Jonathan’s new apartment. They seemed all impressed as they inspect the place.
«Dude, I can see Steve’s place from here, so cool!» Dustin says looking out the window.
Then he spots Steve and Eddie kissing in front of the window.
«No… what are they doing? My brother and my DM? MY BROTHER AND MY DM? MY BROTHER IS FUCKING MY DM?»
As Dustin is screaming bloody murder, Argyle and Jonathan agree to buy Steve some curtains for Christmas.

Early Summer 1987
Steve's hosting a going away party. For everyone. Nancy going to Emerson, Jonathan and Argyle back to California, Steve and Robin moving to Indy, Eddie going off to find his fortune, wherever it may lie.
They've been at it all day, drinking and smoking and loving each other in the way you do when you've subverted several apocalypses together. And Steve is happy. He is. Truly. They're getting out of Hawkins, starting their lives, and he'll be with Robin, his other half, his sister, the platonic love of his life.
But as the night continues and Steve looks around his living room, at all these people he loves--at half of the family they built out of tragedy and fear--his joy turns to melancholy. They're spreading in the wind, chasing the dreams they put on hold to save the world. It's a bittersweet end, and suddenly Steve can't be in the house anymore.
He slips out the sliding door, fully expecting to be alone, but Eddie stands at the edge of the pool, glow of a cigarette illuminating his face. Steve's stomach flips, skitters with butterfly wings, like it always does when he and Eddie are together.
Eddie turns at the sound of the door thumping softly shut, face creasing into a brilliant smile when he spots Steve. It's a smile so beautiful, so genuine, that it makes Steve hurt when it's directed at him. Hasn't been able to help noticing that usually it is, that Eddie--even in full theatrical Eddie-mode--only smiles like this, all dimples and affection, for Steve.
"Okay, Stevie?" Eddie asks.
"Just needed some air."
Eddie offers the cigarette, so Steve sidles up next to him, lining his toes up with the pool edge so they match.
With a nudge, Eddie settles closer, wrapping his arm around Steve's waist. It's not the first time they've embraced like this, not the first time the proximity makes Steve think he'll burst into flame, but it is the first time Steve leans in, rests his head at the join of Eddie's neck and shoulder. They're of a height, and it's just enough that the position is comfortable, easy. Though, everything with Eddie is now.
They smoke in silence for a few minutes, both lost in their own thoughts before Steve speaks, not even sure if he means to, but the words are tumbling out. "Everything's changing."
"It's a good thing," Eddie says. "Right?"
"Yeah, yeah, totally." Steve runs his hands through his hair, pushing it back. "It's just. Thinking about how nothing will ever be the same after this, you know?"
"Maybe," Eddie agrees. "But--I don't know--You think Dustin isn't going to demand visits to all of us? Cross-country roadtrips every summer?"
Eddie offers the cigarette back to Steve, only this time, he moves to place it between his lips and Steve adjusts to let him. Maybe it's an accident, maybe not, but Eddie's thumb strokes the corner of Steve's mouth. Their eyes meet, something hot, wanting passes between them.
"I'm going to do something," Eddie whispers. His eyes drop to Steve's lips. "Don't kill me, okay? Please."
Steve doesn't get a chance to say he'd never hurt Eddie, not in a million years, because the other man is stomping out the cigarette, slotting their mouths together.
There's no hesitation, no questioning, Steve kisses back and it's so soft, so sweet, gentle in a way that he's never been kissed, not even once. And when Eddie licks at the seam of Steve's lips, he opens without thought, because of course he wants Eddie to taste his mouth, to nip at his lips, to slide their tongues together. He fists his hand into the fabric of Eddie's shirt, pulling them closer together. They moan and sigh, swallowing each other's noises, reveling in sensation.
The sliding door pops open, runners scraping, and Robin's voice singsongs, "Steeeve, we're loooooking for you."
Eddie breaks the kiss, turning away, and Steve stumbles towards the door. Doesn't wonder what Robin knows because he sees it in her face, but she's yanking him into the house and everyone is shouting, Argyle hands him a joint, and he lets himself be pulled along, lets himself forget, doesn't notice when Eddie doesn't come back right away.
And the next morning, when they say their goodbyes and Eddie pulls him into a tight, bone-crushing hug, neither of them mentions it. Eddie says, "don't be a stranger," throws him a smile, and he's gone.
Steve can't explain why it hurts so much.
Winter 1991
The invitation--cream and gold, embossed lettering--sits on Eddie's kitchen counter. He knew it was coming, of course, of course, but it hadn't really prepared him to see it. "The families of Steve Harrington and Rebecca Alsworthy cordially invite you to celebrate their nuptials..." burns itself into his brain.
He's in the wedding. Steve asked months ago if Eddie would be a groomsmen, and he said yes; yes because Steve is his best friend, yes because in the moment it didn't hurt so bad, yes because Steve could ask him for anything and he'd give no other answer.
They never talked about what happened the night before they both left Hawkins. It's fine. Truly. Better this way. Steve is straight. So straight he's getting married, and that's good. What he's always wanted, six little nuggets, etc. Eddie is happy for him. He's happy for Steve, but it eats him up inside; the kiss, the love he harbors for his best friend. He should end it, he knows, but ending it is so final and Steve is--everything.
Before he can talk himself out of it, he picks up the phone, makes the call. Tells Steve he can't make it, book deadline, and Steve is disappointed. He is. But they're best friends, saved the world together, so he understands.
When the call is done, his heart hanging together by a thread, he balls up the invite and throws it in the trash.
Summer 1991
Steve's wedding is in 12 hours and Eddie has to go. Can't believe he ever thought he could miss it. He can't not be there when Steve, his Steve, gets married. It doesn't matter how much it'll hurt to watch, because it will make Steve happy and Eddie will always default to making his best friend happy.
Somehow, through the grace of clear summer weather and light Indiana traffic, he makes it to the church with ten minutes to spare. He practically trips through the carved wood front doors, which would be embarrassing, except his eyes fall immediately to Steve standing at the alter and he forgets everything else. He's wearing a navy blue suit, silver accenting, and he's gorgeous. Will never not be. Their eyes meet, and Eddie's heart stops, because it always does. Steve smiles, gives a little wave, but he's pulled away by the minister, and Eddie makes his feet move down the aisle.
He spots Nancy, El, Max, and Erica in a pew, makes his way towards them. They all hug, scream about being back together, but it's Nancy whose eyes are soft, whose smile doesn't quite manage to be happy.
"You okay?" she asks. She wraps her little fingers around his.
His smile doesn't manage to be happy either. "I will be."
The ceremony starts, and he's fine, really, until Rebecca starts walking out to Steve, and he watches his best friend's face light up brighter than a cloudless day. He lets his attention go, then. In the moment where it truly counts, he can't stand to witness the man he loves marry someone else.
And Rebecca is fine, she is, but it's not about her. It's about a kiss in the middle of the night after they saved the world for the last time, and hope, and a love so sweet Eddie's entire chest is rotten with it.
He's out of it until Steve's voice manages to pull him back. He's saying, "I, Steve," and his eyes are locked to Rebecca's, and he's in the middle of repeating after the minister, who's saying "take thee, Rebecca."
Steve smiles, soft and gentle and fond, and he says--the words that come out of his mouth are, "take thee, Eddie--"
His loving smile evaporates, face going rigid with shock.
It's a punch, a kick to the groin, a knife in the gut, all the air in Eddie's lungs snaps out of his body. Nancy squeezes his hand, her nails digging into his skin, and he can't look at anyone else, can't see the reaction, because he's looking at Steve, and Steve is looking at him, abject panic on his handsome face.
Steve stumbles back, Rebecca's hands fallen from his, and Robin grabs him around the shoulders. She bends forward, whispering something in his ear, but it's too late. Steve's eyes are glassy, his body trembling.
"S-sorry, I need to--I have to--Sorry," the man says. He runs.
Eddie makes to stand, but Nancy, El, Max, and Erica force him to stay seated, and Robin's already running after her platonic soulmate, anyway.
"It didn't mean anything," Eddie says. "It was just--he was just. He's marrying Rebecca. It didn't mean anything."
It means everything.

The One with the Trifle Pt 2
part 1 here
A little while later, Robin and Eddie return, bringing the trifle with them. Argyle, thoroughly stoned, walks over to it, leaning down to stare at it eye level.
“Looks great, dude. What is it?”
“English trifle. I found this old cookbook in a thrift shop and thought it looked good. And there was no oven involved, so nothing is burnt this year,” Robin points the last question at Steve, glaring at him.
Steve presses his lips together, trying not to say anything bad. “Yep, nothing looks burnt.”
“Just wait until you taste it,” she excitedly goes on. “I tried everything separately and it was so good, so I’m excited to see what it tastes like all together.”
“What’re the layers?” Argyle asks, still staring at the dessert.
“Lady fingers, then jam, custard, that I made from scratch, raspberries, more ladyfingers, then beef sauteed with peas and onions. More custard, a layer of bananas, and then some whipped cream. Weird right?”
Nancy chokes on her drink. “Weird. What’s weird about it?”
“The beef. Everything else is so sweet it just seems out of place. But then I was like, there’s a mince meat pie. And pies are sweet, so this is just normal for them I guess.”
Eddie claps his hands, getting everyone attention. Totally not nervous about all of this. “Yeah, so normal. Is the rest of the food ready? I am starved.”
They all sit down at the table and have their dinner. The rest of the food is very good, no complaints there. They play cards and talk in between dinner and dessert, after everyone helps clean up of course. Eddie might convince Argyle to give him a joint, just to prepare a little bit. Also, he hates Thanksgiving, so it helps.
“Remind me again why you hate Thanksgiving,” Nancy asks after crushing them all in a round of poker.
“My dad liked to think that you couldn’t get arrested on holidays, which isn’t true. When I was nine, he stole a car, immediately got caught, then got arrested. Happened again when I was twelve. And then I think again when I was fifteen, but I was living with Wayne at that point. Every year, people get together to be thankful, while I get reminded of my dick of a father. Who is probably in jail again for doing something stupid.”
Jonathan winces. “That sucks, man.”
Eddie shuffles the cards. “Yeah. But my uncle’s great though. More of a father to me than my own father was. Would have invited him if he didn’t already have plans.”
They play a few more rounds, Eddie able to sneak in win when Nancy gets dealt a bad hand. Jonathan even wins once, even though he’s a bit confused at what game they’re really playing.
Then it’s time, and Robin starts to plate the trifle. Taking a big spoonful of all the layers and handing them to everyone. Finally sitting down with her own piece, with a huge smile. Steve takes a deep breath in preparation. Nancy gives Steve one last dead glare. One that says both “this is your fault” and “if you mess this up, I will kill you”.
Jonathan pokes around the plate with his fork, inspecting it. Argyle looks actually excited to eat this and Eddie is just twirling the fork around in his hand waiting for someone else to eat it first.
“Steve, I want you to take the first bite,” Robin says, ever so sweetly. With just a touch of malice in her voice. “Since you always doubt my cooking so much.”
Steve nods, pained. “Right. Yeah, of course.” He takes a forkful of the trifle, skirting around the beef.
“You missed a whole layer there. I want to make sure you eat all of it.” Robin smirks at him. Steve can’t tell if it’s because she’s hiding something or because she’s made about his earlier comments. Mind too filled with the anxiety over eating this.
Steve stares at the dessert before his eyes, taking a deep breath before giving Robin a pained smile. Then eating the trifle, trying his hardest not to gag. “It’s great, Rob,” he says, trying to swallow. “So good.”
“Alright, now the rest of you.”
Nancy takes a breath before just shoving a forkful in her mouth. Looking like she barely chews before swallowing it. Jonathan eats it like anything else, looking partially confused, but taking a moment to register what all the flavors are. Argyle just keeps eating it.
Eddie doesn’t eat it at all.
“Steve’s right, probably the best thing you’ve made,” Nancy acts better than Steve did. “You should send me the recipe.”
“Yeah, dude,” Argyle says, plate now half empty. “This is really good.”
Robin bursts out laughing, causing the rest of the table to look at her. “I can’t believe you actually ate it. Oh my God.”
“What?” Steve says, half choking on the water he was drinking.
“I didn’t actually think that beef belonged in the trifle. Do you all really think I’m that dumb?”
Jonathan looks up from his plate, eyes squinted. “What’s going on?”
Argyle leans over. “Not sure but Robin’s laughing a lot.”
Robin stands up, taking her plate and throwing her piece in the trash. “Hold on a second.”
Eddie stands after she leaves, taking his own plate and throwing out his untouched piece of the trifle. “I need you all to know, that I had no idea about this before today. And if it weren’t for Nancy making fun of the way I slice green beans-.”
“Because no one slices green beans that way,” Nancy exclaims.
“I do,” Eddie says dramatically. “Wayne has done it for me that way since I was a kid and wasn’t the biggest fan of green beans. If you want them cut a certain way, you should tell people.”
Nancy pauses. “That is a good point. I’m sorry for getting mad at you.”
“Thank you.” Eddie sees Jonathan and Argyle still eating the not real trifle. “Oh guys, you don’t have to eat that. It was a prank.”
“What?” Jonathan asks, still not sure what’s going on.
Argyle leans over again. “This was a prank, we don’t have to eat this anymore.”
“But it’s dessert.”
“Yeah, but not the real dessert.”
Jonathan is not putting the pieces together. “Where’s the real dessert then?”
“Don’t know, man. It isn’t here yet.”
Nancy stands, taking the two plates in front of them. “I’m just going to move these.”
“Jesus, dude, how much did you smoke?” Steve asks, finally throwing his food away.
Robin comes back into the apartment with another trifle in her hands, this one beef free. She places it in the center of the table, smiling maniacally. “This is the real trifle.”
The real trifle looks exactly like a picture of one would. Layers of lady fingers, jam, custard, and fruit. All perfectly even, with not a speck of beef in sight.
“That,” Nancy starts, still in shock, “looks really good.”
“I know, right.” Robin sits back down in her seat. “And it really wasn’t that hard either. The only thing that I had to make myself was the custard, which was actually pretty easy.”
“I knew that’s not how cookbooks worked,” Steve says annoyed, glaring at Eddie.
Eddie shrugs, “It was part of the bit.”
Argyle stares at the new trifle. “I think you’re missing a layer there, dude.”
“No, she added an extra layer before,” Eddie explains. “This one is the correct one.”
“If you say so.” Argyle leans back into the chair, still skeptical.
The real trifle is dished out and eaten pretty fast. Everyone apologizing to Robin for doubting her. She sits with a smug look on her face for the rest of the night.

The One Where the Secret Slips
T | 3.4k
Part 7 of the Friends AU series!
Read on AO3 | start from the beginning
"How about you Eddie?" Hen said, rolling her eyes at the two of them as she poured herself a new mug of coffee. "Any plans with the boyfriend?" It had been maybe two months since they all found out, and after the initial torment and Buck's overly exuberant teasing, things had settled, and they could talk about it like mature adults. Mostly. As much as Chim and Buck could manage that. "We're uh, going away for the weekend with Christopher," he said. "Up to Big Bear." "Oh hey, Buck's going up there too," Chim said, and Eddie shot Buck a look, that hidden language coming in handy. "Is he?" Eddie said dryly as Buck gave him an apologetic smile. "You finally going to introduce one of us to this guy?" Hen said with a suggestive smile. "No hey I'm... I'll be at a uh, wellness retreat thing," Buck said. "Total coincidence. I didn't even know Eddie was going to be there."

Unorignal Marauders FRIENDS AU 2
Related to THIS and I'm trying to figure out what jobs they would have
Sirius and Regulus stopped talking after highschool. For a moment, it got better but everything crumbled very fast when their parents tried to send Sirius off to a very private (controlling) college for family business and since then they stopped talking. Before that they never really got along, competitive household and all that abuse crap, but Regulus' own revelations about himself made them talk.
Jegulus -
The prom video where Sirius stopped by James' place before that with Regulus, still a girl, where they prepared a suit for him and all to make him as the boy HE IS. But Regulus' date doesn't show up and he starts to panic and James tries to comfort him before Euphemia suggests that he brings Regulus himself.
At first he planned to go with Sirius and Marlene (who faked dating just to be prom king and queen) as friends because James had this tiny HUGE crush on Regulus since forever and dating someone else has never helped. But he decides that's his chance and rushes to the bathroom to check on his looks just to be sure that he is the most perfect for Regulus.
Regulus' date (Barty who had to deal with his dad) shows up at the last moment and only James' parents know what he tried to there but arrived too late.
James never dated Regulus before because the Black family is a MESS. Sirius came to his place so many time beaten up and Regulus played by his parents' rules until the last years but never as clearly. James never found the right moment to tell him about his feelings because of how worried he was for them - plus Regulus RARELY talked to him.
James would mistake Regulus for Sirius at first when he doesn't wear his glasses, which makes a very awkward moment where he walks out of the bathroom naked to ask Sirius to check on his tattoo (trampstamp supremacy) if it's healing well. He and Sirius are not bothered by seeing each other naked, plus James is shameless, but Regulus IS NOT PREPARED FOR THAT.
Of course Regulus tells him WRONG BROTHER WTF ARE YOU DOING YOU MORON and James panics because that's not how he planned to woo Regulus, probably hits his face against the door's threshold because no glasses when he tries to walk back in.
Marlene, plus Remus, will walk on them and she will take a picture and send it to everyone she knows. 'James F. Potter welcoming new roommate'.
Wolfstar -
Sirius would definitely beg Remus to never date Regulus once his brother is around because he is very scared about that idea. It's already hard that Remus is dating other people, obviously (not) moved on from Sirius, but it would be the worst if he was into Regulus. It would imply that Sirius isn't attractive enough (that's his conclusion) because he and Regulus do look similar.
If Regulus and Remus starts dating then Sirius will be torn between breaking them up and wishing them to be happy together. Basically he will die if that ever happens. Remus has absolutely no view on Regulus and promises him that will never happen but Sirius is still very jealous because they bond so well at first.
Remus rarely takes Padfoot on big walks because of his chronic pain but he often goes to the park with him to let Padfoot roam free (well-behaved dog who knows all kinds of orders). Sirius often joins him and no one says how it's obviously dates, especially when Sirius starts to prepare picnics for them and the 'walk' becomes FULL-DAY hangouts.
They met through James, who met Remus in college, and at first it was awkward because both were 'holy crap why is he so attractive and charming' before getting along so well James had to third-wheel. Remus was very jealous of James at first because of how co-dependent they are and sometimes it still happens (because they really don't have any boundaries at times).
Their attempt at dating, which started unclearly because they just sort of started kissing and sleeping together but without clarifying that they are BOTH very commited, probably one year or two before Regulus bursts in. They weren't hiding it on purpose but it added up on the misunderstandings (both were scared to come off too strong so they tried to play it cool because they have been friends for at least 3 years now) and both think the other wasn't honest/flirting with someone else/messing around.
Peter absolutely knows but never said it. Remus roamed through the apartment like a lost soul and was very cranky but he tried his best to help.

FRIENDS AU Part 2: The One Where Eddie Copes
[part one]
[cross-posted to ao3] || word count: 3.3k
Eddie doesn’t know how long it takes for his soul to return to his body.
It left as soon as his eyes and brain fully registered that he was suddenly in the presence of his high school crush. Right here, in the flesh, sitting in the middle of his friends in The Jittery. He can’t help but consider the fact that he may have been the one to summon him with his pathetic cry for his ex-girlfriend just moments before the incident.
The casual, ‘You remember Eddie? From high school?’ comment from Robin sucker-punched Eddie right in the chest. The eye contact and shy smile that followed nearly sent Eddie into some sort of stress-induced cardiac arrest.
He hardly registers the barely coherent story that Steve is trying to tell. Eddie watches him bring a glass of water to his mouth with shaky hands and tries not to stare at his lips.
“I’m confused.” Jonathan says as Eddie starts to regain consciousness.
Memories of his repressed gay awakening circa-1985 come flooding back with a vengeance. Sitting in the bleachers during gym class, watching this same guy flick off his t-shirt, dripping in sweat, shit-talking his opponents, shoving them around a little too rough for a gym class game of basketball.
He adjusts how he’s sitting in the chair, right now, in 1993. Beating away the thoughts from the Ghost of Horny Moments Past, pushing away the potential for any unexplainable chubs as he tries to sit and listen to the man himself ramble about God-knows-what, soaking wet like a pathetic little kitten in the coffee shop.
He’s going to throw up.
Or pass out.
Possibly both.
Thankfully, everyone’s attention is on the runaway bride, too distracted to notice that he’s in crisis.
“It makes perfect sense to me.” Argyle shrugs, handing Steve a giant ceramic cup.
“Just run it by us one more time.”
Steve takes a comically large sip from his mug, holds the coffee in his cheeks, making them puff out and Eddie is convinced that this is some sort of punishment for all of his mistakes.
“You know, they always told me that cold feet are normal. That’s what they all say about  getting married, that you get cold feet. Well, I realized when I woke up this morning, after having a very vivid and intense dream about Harrison Ford, that maybe my feet were never really that warm to begin with, ya know?”
Everyone is nodding, as if they do know. Nancy has her eyebrows knitted together, Robin looks a bit too amused, Jonathan looks confused, and Argyle is casually dipping his tea bag into his mug, like this is a normal thing unfolding in front of them.
“Look, I was in a frat in college. I am very comfortable with my sexuality or whatever and I didn’t let the dream sway any decision making at that moment.”
Eddie resists the urge to ask him what exactly this sexuality is.
“So it wasn’t Harrison…” Nancy presses, her hand motioning as if to say, 'Please continue this batshit story.'
“It wasn’t him,” He takes a sip from his mug, the rest of the group inches closer. “It happened about 10 minutes later, when Lola was knocking on my door, standing there in tears.”
“Fuck,” Robin drags out the word, Jonathan lets out a low whistle.
“Turns out, she also had lukewarm feet throughout most of our relationship. She wanted to call it off. And that’s when I knew we had to. Because any normal fiance would’ve freaked the fuck out, right? Would’ve started begging or pleading or yelling or something! But I had nothing. Nothing but relief.”
The collective air in the room deflates.
“So, we devised a plan. We’d both get ready, business as usual. And I’d be the one to sneak out of the bathroom window in the groom’s suite. Before we realized it was on the second story of the hotel.”
He shrugs, as Eddie studies his attire a little closer, seeing he does have twigs and a smattering of leaves on his now-discarded jacket.
“Steve, I know you’re vulnerable and whatever,” Robin says, pausing when Nancy smacks her arm. “But, why here? Why us?” Motioning between her and Nancy.
He chuckles, eyes now looking down into his cup. Eddie can't help but stare at this very odd man sitting in front of him.
“I don’t know. I guess it was mostly because I knew you lived in the city. But there’s another part of me that knew you’d understand. You were one of the only people I’ve ever met that tried understanding me for me. Not what you wanted me to be.”
And that's, wow. Why on Earth would he say something like that? Now Eddie has to cope with the fact that not only is this dude still hot, he sounds sweet as hell.
“C’mon, let’s get you up to the apartment.”
He can’t cope.
“Mom, you’re gonna need to stop crying or hand the phone back to dad.” Steve pleads. He's been on the phone for about an hour at this point, everyone else scattered around Nancy's apartment, listening.
Eddie, most of the shock worn off by now, is sitting at Nancy’s kitchen table, eating a pie straight from the tin and unable to tear his eyes away from the train wreck that is Steve Harrington, still in his damp clothes, but stripped down to an undershirt and the tux pants and no shoes or socks.
Watches him keep tugging hard at his hair every time a muffled yell comes out of the phone, loud enough for everyone in the room to hear.
No wonder this guy ran away.
Robin sits backwards on the chair next to Eddie’s as Steve stumbles out of the window onto the terrace, where the rain has somewhat let up.
“Do you think he’s gay?” He asks as soon as Steve is fully outside.
“Definitely not straight." Robin plucks the fork from Eddie's hand.
Jonathan shrugs, sighing as he finally sets the change of clothes down on the table and takes a seat.. He has been holding a change of clothes from his apartment in his hands for at least a half hour, waiting for Steve to get off the phone with his parents.
"I mean, who talks about Harrison Ford in the same breaths as explaining why you ran away from your wedding?” He says, stealing the fork from Robin.
“I never think about Harrison Ford unless I’m watching him on tv. And even then I barely think about him.”
“Does that answer your question?”
Before Eddie can say, not really, his thoughts are interrupted by a commotion coming from the other side of the room where the bedroom doors are closed.
Nancy comes out of the spare room, curly hair frizzier than it had been on the way up the stairs from the coffee shop, rubbing her temples and pulling on her face as she joins the group in the living room.
“Are they still arguing?” She asks, craning her neck to get a better look at him out on the terrace. He’s still gesturing wildly, doing a lot more yelling.
“I think so?” Robin turns her head like a confused dog, watching him gesture wildly with his free hand.
“One minute he’s telling his dad that he doesn’t want to live like him and then it sounds like his mom is crying, I think he talked to his old nanny at one point?”
“His parents sound like a mess.” Eddie says, earning three different versions of a 'no-duh' look from his friends.
“Have you seen the apple? What kinda tree do you think it fell from?” Jonathan says, passing the fork back to Eddie, which is then snatched away by Nancy. She takes the pie tin from them, putting it back in the fridge.
They can hear the window opening and Steve falling back inside, silent cursing to himself.
“No dad, you listen!” All their heads snap in the direction of Steve. Once again, soaking wet. His face is red, his already big hair standing up in every direction, and an insane look on his eyes.
Are his pupils dilated?
“Fine! I don’t care, I don’t care anymore! Cut me off! I don’t care! You know what,” Steve struggles to get his wallet out of his pocket, pauses and just throws the wallet across the room. Muffled yelling comes from the phone. “I'm snapping my credit cards right fucking now!"
"I’ll stay here, with Nancy and Robin and you can take that inheritance and shove it up your ass!” Steve hangs up the phone and throws it onto the loveseat next to him.
No one moves. No one speaks. The air is still, but only for a moment.
“I think this is where the sitcom audience would clap.” Eddie forgot Argyle has been laying down on the couch this entire time. Steve’s red face suddenly looks sickly pale.
"I think I'm gonna be sick."
Jonathan and Nancy hop up from their spots, Robin hands him a brown paper bag, and they guide him to the couch. Eddie watches this all unfold, lingering in the background. Not one for comfort, especially being the king of mommy and daddy issues, without the complicated mess of being a trust fund baby, he has nothing helpful to add.
“It’s gonna be okay, just try taking deep breaths.”
Steve nods, the paper bag inflating and deflating slower, but still rather fast.
“Would it help if I sang a song?”
The bag inflates and deflates even slower, everyone just sort of stares at Argyle.
“Don’t worry, about a thing, because every little thing, is gonna be alright.” Steve slowly brings the paper bag down, rests his hand on Argyle’s forearm.
“I think I’m okay now, thank you.” He visibly winces at the lackluster Bob Marley
“Don’t mention it, mon.”
For some godforsaken reason, Steve looks right at Eddie as they make the same face, an eyebrow hiked up to their hairlines, the physical embodiment of a scoff without actually scoffing. All while making eye contact with each other.
Eddie looks away quickly, jumping out of the chair so fast that it scrapes against the floor, startling everyone in the room.
“What am I gonna do?” He sounds panicked.
“We’re gonna help you figure it out,” Jonathan says, sat on the coffee table across from him.
“You can stay here with me, Jonathan and Robin live across the hall, it’ll be fun.” Nancy is patting his arm.
“But what about money? I have none of that!”
“There are these things called jobs,” Eddie says, Nancy snaps her head around and damn-near snarls at him. Steve’s brown paper bag is back to inflating and deflating.
The phone rings, saving Eddie from immediate doom via-Nancy Wheeler.
Nancy looks at the time and is now the one to get up from her seat next to Steve like something bit her on the ass.
“Shit! Shit shit shit!”
“What's with all the shit, Wheeler?” Eddie asks, Nancy flipping him off as the phone continues to ring in her hand.
“I forgot to call Frank and cancel.”
“Who’s Frank?”
“My date,” she says, immediately sending Eddie a scrunched up face and mouthing sorry.
“Wait wait wait, Frank? As in, Frank the Creepy Paper Salesman?” Robin hops over the backside of the couch, falling into Nancy. The phone stops ringing. Nancy takes a deep breath, closing her eyes and looking up at the ceiling.
Creepy was a generous assessment of the piece of work that is Frank. Asking Nancy on dates ever since she started working at The Times, stopping by the office ad nauseam, so much so, he has become a regular fixture in the lore surrounding Nancy's office.
“Yes, that Frank.”
“Is the dating well running that dry Nance? So dry you finally said yes to Frank the creepy paper salesman?”
“Listen, he caught me in a momentary lapse of judgment.”
“Were you conscious during this lapse?”
"Fully, I just. It's been a while since I'd been on a date and my mom would not stop pestering me about it on the phone literal minutes, seconds even, before Frank showed up to talk to my boss. So, when he did his usual creep routine of asking me out, I said yes."
“Was he as surprised as we are?” Eddie asks, Nancy nods, wincing.
"And are you regretting the yes?"
"Fully!"
The phone is ringing again.
“Hello,” she answers, sounding like she has a congested nose. “Hi Frank, yeah, I’m not feeling that well. Yeah, maybe we can postpone. I’ll call you, yeah.”
“I’m sorry Nancy, I know this was kinda my fault.” Steve’s voice continues to be muffled by the bag.
“I can’t believe you thought I’d be upset about you going out with Frank the Creep.” Eddie sits back down in the kitchen chair. Is he really that fragile? Can his friends really not share their downfalls with him like they used to?
“I don’t know! You freaked when Robin went on a date with Tam-”
“Aht! Aht!” Robin waves her hands in the air, almost elbowing Steve. “We are not talking about my dating life. I am striking this down immediately!”
“Point still stands, then. You’re still very upset about Michelle.” And the sound of her name feels like a cartoon anvil dropping inside of his stomach, dropping and dropping.
“We are not gonna talk about Michelle right now.” He deadpans.
“Who’s Michelle?” Steve asks, paper bag back in front of his face, inflating and deflating as he speaks.  All of the air has been kicked out of Eddie’s lungs.
“Eddie’s ex,” Argyle whispers loudly, with no effort made to keep Eddie from hearing him.
“We are not talking about Michelle right now!” Eddie yells. Everyone goes quiet.
“Right now we are going to focus on getting Steve to stop breathing into a paper fucking bag!”
To which they all look over at Steve, who is staring at everyone with wide eyes and the bag no longer dramatically inflating and deflating, just held to his mouth as he stares around the room.
“I’m actually starting to feel a little better.” He says, into the bag. Inflating and deflating.

Across the hall, Eddie has his feet kicked up on Jonathan and Robin’s couch, hands linked and resting on his stomach. His head in Robin’s lap and his feet on Jonthan’s lap, staring up at the ceiling where he can see a spaghetti stain splattered across the asbestos pattern.
Jeopardy is playing in the background but none of them are paying attention. Argyle is sat on the floor, head close to Eddie’s as they all pass around a joint.
“So, you let her take the TV, the bedroom set, and the living room set. What do you even have left at your place?”
“Pots and pans?”
“Dude,” Argyle blows a ring of smoke in the air. “That is so not cool.” He passes Eddie the joint.
“I felt bad. It’s my fault we’re in this situation.”
“There are no faults, and yet you’re still punishing yourself.” Jonathan says, eyes glued to the TV, a familiar spacey look on his face.
Argyle checks his watch and gets up from the floor, patting around his pockets.
“Looks like it’s time for me to head out, Aunt Miriam is making midnight spaghetti and I wanna get there before her boyfriend eats all the garlic bread.”
“Midnight spaghetti?” and “Your great aunt has a boyfriend?” are asked by Eddie and Robin respectively at the same time.
“See ya man,” Jonathan yells as the door shuts behind him.
Robin knocks on Eddie’s head lightly before pushing him off of her, stretching and yawning as she stands.
“I’m gonna go raid Nance’s for some more beers,” He swings he feet off of Jonathan’s lap and stretches.
“I’ll get your pillow and blankey situated,” Robin says. Eddie half turns to send her a salute before shutting the door, opening the one across the hall almost in one fell swoop.
He doesn’t expect to see Steve still up, sitting at the same kitchen chair he spent most of the afternoon and evening in. Most of the color returned to face, a glass of wine and an open bottle on the table.
“Hey,” He says, curious and careful
“Hi.” Steve smiles warmly at him, gesturing the bottle at him, Eddie takes it as an invitation.
“You alright?” He grabs a wine glass from Nancy’s hanging glass rack.
“Yeah, couldn’t sleep.”
“Why? A lot on your mind?” Eddie takes the seat across form him.
“You’re funny,” Steve fills Eddie’s glass. “I remember you being kinda funny in high school.” To that, Eddie fakes a dagger to the heart, startling Steve a bit, who is looking at Eddie with the same type of amusement that everyone looked at him with a few hours ago.
“If seventeen-year-old-me heard you say that you remembered me at all from high school, there’d be an Eddie shaped hole in that door.” Eddie takes a swig from his wine, thanking whoever is in charge of the universe that it's red wine, giving him an explanation for the blush already blooming on his face. Well, a better explanation than a cute guy laughing at his silly jokes.
“Of course I remember you, how could I forget all those lunchtime sermons about how cool and different you were and how lame and boring the rest of us were.” Steve says, not hiding how much it he seems to enjoy that the little walk down memory lane has started to make Eddie visibly cringe.
“Don’t remind me of that,” Eddie groans into his glass.
“You seem a lot softer now.”
Eddie drags his eyes up from where they were studying the knick in the the wood on the table, meeting Steve’s gaze.
“You caught me at a soft time in my life, Harrington.”
“Right,” Steve leans back in his chair, brings his own glass to his lips, pausing to take a sip. “Your ex.”
“Yep, my ex.”
“Did she just, totally break your heart?” He asks, throwing Eddie off guard a bit. He didn't expect Steve to be so forward with his nosiness. Kinda respects it.
“No, it was more like. I broke my own heart.”
“What does that even mean?”
He looks at Steve. Really looks at him, and can almost see the kindness actually spilling out of those pretty brown eyes, how he came to Robin and Nancy specifically to help him out, knowing that they would.
“It means, I realized that she’s not really my type after all. After eight years together, I finally realized that I am g-” he clears his throat.
“That I’m gay. No matter how much I love her, no amount is going to change the fact that I wasted both of our time.”
Eddie can’t bear to look up at Steve, but feels his eyes on him.
The glug glug sound of wine pouring out of the bottle breaks the silence, Eddie finally looks up.
“You need it more than I do,” Steve says, taking a swig from the bottle, tipping it over the table to show that it’s now empty.
This makes Eddie laugh. A full belly laugh that seems to be contagious, as Steve’s now laughing, a snort escaping his nose and mouth, making the two laugh even harder.
“You guys, seriously?” Nancy comes out of her room, robe on and rollers in her hair. “Some of us have to work in the morning!”
“Sorry Nance, we’ll keep it down.”
“Sorry.”
She looks at them, her face softens with look of mild bewilderment. Stands there for a few seconds longer than she otherwise would’ve, before wordlessly going back into her bedroom.
“That reminds me, I need to get one of those.” Steve says as her door clicks shut.
“One of what?”
“A job, or something.”
“I can put a good word in for you at a few places.” He says, taking a big gulp from the very full wine glass.
“Thanks, Eddie.”
He can’t help but think maybe, just maybe, he will be able to cope with Steve being around.
