hello, my lovelies, and thank you so much for 5k followers~♡ it's been just under a year since I started writing on here, and it's been so fun interacting with everyone and writing for Spencer and the other members of the BAU team! I was a bit unprepared for some of my other milestones and threw some stuff together last minute for them, but I've been thinking about a writing challenge for a while and I finally decided to do it!

Please note: This is a writing challenge! All the prompts below are meant to inspire you to write your own fics and not as prompt requests for me. I hope you can use them as a starting point to write~♡

The theme for the challenge is:

daydreams and shooting stars`☆

There are two sets of prompts to choose from! The daydreams' prompts are based on classic fanfiction tropes that we know and live, and the shooting stars prompts are based on the zodiac signs. There are 12 prompts in each list, and you're welcome to mix and match prompts as you like! Maybe you'd like to combine your star sign with your favourite trope, or two particularly match well, or if you like a single prompt, you can just write for that. I don't mind if the fic is only very loosely based on the prompt, too, do whatever you'd like!

The writing challenge will run up until my 1 year writing anniversary, July 27th, so you have plenty of time to get your fics in! I'll be reblogging all the entries, and at the end, I'll add them to a recommendation list! Hi Anon! I have a long and short answer for this.

I do have a few OCs that I love working with, but I tend to keep them private so I can include "you" in the story.

Writing in 3rd person these days doesn't come as naturally for me, but I have written for my OCs just for me. I love talking about them, my favourite is "Varagnr Tallulah". She's the first OC I developed for one piece, and her end-game love interest is Dracule Mihawk.

This is the vibe:

I have thought a lot about her, and have written about her. While I love her and would love to show her on here, I keep her for just me and my moot-wife @sordidmusings who has an OC in the same world (who was also the one to suggest talking OCs and character development).

Tropes: arranged marriage, forbidden love, forbidden kiss, mutual pining, unrequited love, friends to enemies to lovers, widowship, magic, major injury, violence, angst, hurt no comfort, one night stands without love but with respect (Crocodile, Beckman), nobleship, travelling, sailing, wars, riots.

Below the cut is my brain on paper regarding her build. I do the same for reader-inserts to get into their heads before fic writing. This is also what I do to develop D&D characters. Sorry in advance for the long response!

History: 

From before her conception, her life was meticulously planned to the finest of details. She was bred to serve; her purpose was to be the wife of a wealthy lord in a far off land. Chastised for poor posture, attuned in the art of conversation, well-versed in the running of fine land and their staff to come along with it as the lady of the house, and educated in all to do with her future spouse: the lord. 

Her spouse, taken immediately by her appearance, romanced her through a hasty courtship; wed her and bedded her. He was boisterous, enthusiastic, passionate - but never truly held her heart as her own passion was taken from her in her youth. 

Her only joys in life were:

Sword-Fighting: a fine craft of blade wielding where, when done correctly, looked as though the wielder effortlessly danced in the thralls of combat - amongst the spatter and carnage of blood and innards (Mihawk trainer).

Drinking wine and learning of the different produce crafted within the east, west, north and south blues - the grand line Tokaji variety from Kuraigana being her favorite.

Her enchantress, confidant and friend: Pythia (Sordid's OC). Having someone to truly be an ear, a shoulder and an embrace through the inner struggle of balancing the weight of regality while being the same for their own woes.

Hearing tales of her husband’s associates while providing them her presence at the dining table, dancing with them in lieu of her spouse when required. (Sir Crocodile).

As their relationship developed, she was left as naught but a shell of a person; free from drive to become anything other than a forlorn bedmate for this man - a man who truly didn’t care for her mind nor her own satisfaction in release within aforementioned bedroom activity. He never doted on her, only opting to dress her in fineries of silks and satins to showcase her to his acquaintances and colleagues

Left in a wealthy estate, a life of luxury with nothing now to hold her back from her own pursuit: what passions can she manage to find within the husk of a body too young to be widowed while in the prime of her life. 

She was the perfect partner, the pretty plaything and quick-witted when words were called for. The perfect bride.

Until her husband died, fighting in some silly war some Red-Haired Captain called him to take up his arms for. 

Name: Tallulah “Lulu/Tally/Tal” 

Background: Nobility from birth, sword-wielder, wine consumer, quick-witted. Regality, poised and fiery in her crafted words. 

Alignment: Neutral Good: Understanding the law, tendencies to sway ‘balance’ rather than good and evil. Knowing the law, understanding which ones can and should be adhered to and others were made to be challenged. 

Appearance: Long copper hair, loose curls, pale skin, teal eyes, soft femininity with a semi-built body to hold the weight of her claymore and dance with it effortlessly. 

Goals: longs for romance. Strong desire to be courted; wooed properly without the ending of flirtation being meticulously laid out by design. 

Ideals: to find her limits, test them and break them. Fiercely loyal to friends and companions, regardless of whether they’re healthy relationships or not. 

Flaws: will put herself within harm’s way and talk her way out of situations with her trained wit. Where her wit fails, her claymore will be showered in the blood of those that oppose her. Bleeding heart: hard to fall in love, but falls hard when she does.

Many rumors had been spoken regarding the death of her husband, prompting her to be excluded from many gatherings and ostracized from the inner circles of the ruling class. Snickering from the sidelines with a glass of bitter, dry wine in her hand is how she spends her time - always finding cheer and rapport with Pythia who often takes the snickering and comments to another level entirely. 

Very, truly, deeply mourning the loss of her autonomy - has no identity without her departed-husband. Bore him no children, but remained the ruler of the estate as none rose to contest the land form her ruling hand. 

Proficiencies: Skilled with a blade, but slow to draw it. Will not fight unless truly necessary - learnt feat from the demise of her spouse. Strong liver; can handle her alcohol.

Suggested background character relationship origin:

Dracule Mihawk Origin: Youthful dalliance, both understanding nothing could truly come of feeding the flames of their romantic entanglement. Broke off training with one another when Mihawk kissed her in the “talking window” while training.

Talking window: where blades cross the front of the torso, only faces revealed in the triangular blade connection. 

Mihawk was the one to break off the training, opting to not put each other in a more compromising situation

Dialogue Suggestions:

“You’re getting better.”

“I’m not,” pushing forward to trip Mihawk, “you’re just getting sloppy.”

“Sloppy?” leg trip of his own to fall her down on her ass, “you’re getting bolder, too, Lulu.”

“Did you manage to bring the…-” Tallulah’s eyes brighten and look down to the satchel hanging loosely from Mihawk’s shoulder.

“Yes,” he rolled his eyes, “it’s from last year’s vintage. Not as good as the other ones I’ve made-.”

“You made this one?” a gasp falling from her lips, “Mihawk, that’s so special!”

Flaws: Did not want to be married, nor to be tied down to a single woman. Although pleased Tallulah is pretty and enjoys showing her off, he truly does not care for her and chooses to occupy his time by gambling away his wealth with his associates. 

Fatal Flaw: Owes a single favor to Red-Haired Shanks - a favor that claims his life. 

Dynamic between Tallulah and Fraener: He is more taken with the idea that a woman has been designed and curated to suit his tastes, rather than appreciating Tallulah for the woman she truly is. Although Tallulah never strayed in her marriage, she has a fair few accounts to manage on behalf of Fraener to tend to his gaggle of trysts and keep his unnamed children at bay. 

Tallulah is initially infatuated by him, as she was trained to be all her life. As the days, weeks and years flow on, the illusion is shattered and she feels more alone and isolated than ever: the newness of her dies away, Fraener continues to seek out other company and leaves her to her own hobbies: swords and wine without her “Hawk” to lead her. 

He rarely seeks out her company, only sharing a small farewell kiss as he sails at the call to arms - the last kiss ever to be shared between them.

One of the BEST plot twists I have ever read! Harry’s complex relationship with Voldemort is done so well in this post-war AU. I don’t want to spoil anything, but the reread value of this fic is incredible -- in the brief span of a few thousand words, we get so much character insight and build up to a truly incredible reveal. It is a delight going back and picking out all the details that lends to just how deeply messed up and multilayered this relationship is!

Such a HOT fic. Scarcrux knows all of Harry's deepest, darkest secrets -- including just how he likes to get off. Watching Harry's resistance crumble in the face of Tom's careful seduction is one of my favourite dynamics in this ship! And BOTTOM TOM is the whipped cream hat on this perfect PWP parfait. 💜🔥 We deserve more fics like this one, where Tom gets what he wants!

Cindle's next-gen writing is a huge part of why I have any interest at all in those characters, and this story is a great example of why! In this fic, we navigate Al's co-dependent relationship with Harry as his loving father and (though he doesn't know it!) his fated enemy. The merging of Al and Tom's personalities is so well done and elevates both ship aspects of the story, as well as seeing Harry through the lens of Al-with-Tom, in such a unique way!

Q: Where can we find you and your stories?

Q: How would you describe your writing style?

A: I really couldn’t tell you! It really depends on how I’m feeling. I suppose you could say I love dialogue and you can definitely find a lot of sexual tension or flirting in my fics. 

Q: How do you come up with ideas for your writing?

A: A lot of the time it's through songs e.g. Teenage Kicks, but I also read quite a lot, so I get inspiration from books. For example, sometimes when I’m reading, I find a certain line I love and then that prompts an entire storyline in my head. Sometimes it’s just a feeling or a moment. With you are the sun, I was pining for hot summer Australian days (it was depressingly winter) and I had just finished reading Conversations with Friends. There’s this one scene where he uses a beer bottle to cool her down and I couldn’t help but write that scene with Jily. The prompt then rolled into a three-part story with a lot of sweaty, humid, hot synonyms. 

Q: When and why did you begin writing fanfiction?

A: I think I started in 2021 during COVID. COVID got me back to a lot of my hobbies that I dropped for a while. I started listening to music again, reading a lot more, and going for a lot of walks (in which I ended up just making up stories in my head). My friend sent me some fanfic to read (I think it was a Fred Wesley fic haha) and then I got back onto Tumblr and stumbled onto the love of our lives, Jily ❤️‍

Q: What’s one thing you’d tell someone who is considering reading one of your fics?

A: Prepare for a lot of flirty fluff and smut ;) 

Q: What are some of your favorite Jily tropes?

A: Friends to lovers, secret relationships, idiots in love - anything that makes them look like idiots that love each other to be honest! 

Q: What do you like most about the Jily fandom?

A: How diverse it is! You can literally have a thirst for any type of trope and find it, and the quality of writing is chef’s kiss! Most importantly, everyone I’ve talked to has also been really sweet and supportive, which is the backbone of this fandom.

Q: Pick a favourite Marauders era character.

A: Apart from James and Lily, I love Sirius Black - he’s such a complex character. I suppose as a fandom, he’s one of the only Marauders that we know enough about to establish his personality but I still feel like there’s so many complexities behind how he treated Harry and his time in azkaban. I would LOVE to really know his relationship with Lily as well. 

Q: Self-promo time! List the fics that you are most proud of writing.

A:

Teenage Kicks – It all starts with Lily being hired to be the bands tour photographer, then she actually meets the band and she quickly becomes absorbed by their fast lifestyle, their pranks and the hot lead singer. But its not exactly simple to be crushing on a famous Rockstar, is it?

Strawberry Lipstick – After spending her 6th year in a state of depression after her mothers death and her sister’s rejection, Lily finds herself changing into the person she thought she wanted to be over the summer before her last year at Hogwarts. Coming back to Hogwarts as Head girl, Lily shocks James as she walks onto the train with a sense of confidence she hadn't had in years. Her head held high, and a devilish smirk that makes James shiver. (Probably needs a desperate edit as this was my first foray into writing my own fanfiction but it’s my first so there’s a deep love for it!)

you are the sun – She feels someone brush a piece of her hair behind her ear, a flyaway from her messy ponytail. She turns to her side to find Daniel smiling sweetly at her, he leans over to grab his beer from the table before lounging back in his chair. She stares dumbly for a few seconds, before her eyes hesitantly reach the man opposite her. James is staring openly at her, one eyebrow raised in question. She tries her best to stop a smile gracing her lips but she loses miserably. 

Q: Fic rec time! Could you recommend a few of your favourite Jily fics?

Top 3 tropes in media/fanfic

So in terms of general concepts/tropes I enjoy in all media, there def any iteration of (Enemies/Rivals to) Friends to Lovers; then Found Family <3 and hurt/comfort -> especially in combo with one of the other two tropes!

When in comes to which types of fanfics I specifically seek out most of the time:

(putting these answers and the fanfic recs under the cut, cause this is once again getting way longer than I intended)

I know this is super unpopular, but I love well done miscommunication in fanfics! Hate it in most movies tho!!

-> also what I think constitutes “good” miscommunication basically boils down to “ is the miscommunication plot or character motivated?” cause in a lot of media the miscommunication feels forced and only meant to prolong or escalate the story

-> but if the miscommunication happens bc the characters are, for example, insecure about sharing certain info/feelings it is way more captivating and relatable (to me)

-> so this is ofc directly related to (Mutual) Pining <3 (plus also connected to another fave of mine: Memory Loss/Amnesia & also secret identity)

2. Forced proximity!!

-> I’m counting both sharing a bed and stuff like fake relationship under this umbrella

-> I just love when characters are forced to interact with each other in a different and typically more intimate way than they usually do! (and what it reveals about themselves and their relationship to eachother!)

3. Fix-it fanfics

-> I actually love original stories that have tragic endings! But there are many ways a story can end in a disappointing way and make me immeditaly turn to what all the wonderful fanfic authors have come up with in order to clean up the mess!

Be My Savior - Chapter 1 - jessebee - Supernatural [Archive of Our Own] -> this is me coming out as lowkey more of a Sabriel than Destiel fan 🙈 Like ofc Destiel have the better canon story, and I do love them very much; However Sabriel fanfics captured my heart when I was a teenager and are still hanging on by a thread! (also I can still make myself cry instantly via a headcanon I created for them ages ago and that's gotta count for smth 😹)

But Mer 🖤💜@tommybowefuneralattendee has so many banger fanfics, it was super hard to choose! <3 But this fic made me truly ship nintendogs, so it deserves this mention

the not beyond repair director's commentary let's goooo!

So I knew the general structure of it from the beginning and the main plot and relationship beats, such as Martha and Heather coming together because Martha was tutoring her, JD's mum's death coming up at some point. I didn't initially plan for it to become a chapter for each month type of structure, but I think it was the best way to tell the story.

I'm 99% sure I only gave Claire's POV once, in chapter 14, which on the one hand I'm like "sorry bb girl" but on the other, it feels important that we get Claire's POV when JD is at his lowest.

I also didn't know what Claire's last name was going to be until I wrote chapter 17, but I can't imagine it now being anything other than Monroe.

My favourite chapter to write was probably Chapter 12. Not because I'm a sucker for Christmas but it was because I loved the soft friendship moments and the progress of JD and Veronica's relationship

It was super important to me that I emphasise Martha and Ronnie's friendship. Not just because I am a Martha Dunnstock warrior but also because I hate the trope in media of valuing romantic relationships over platonic ones. And if I may say so myself, I think I did it justice.

It was also important to me that Claire and JD's relationship isn't quite like a parent-child dynamic. When writing it, it felt more like they're buddies or maybe closer to siblings. They can't really put a label on it, which is one of the reasons he still calls her Claire and not 'Mom'. It's not that he doesn't love her, he does, it's because their dynamic is different to a typical family.

Okay another Claire note; I also wanted Veronica to kind of be closer to Claire than she is with her own parents. Claire is just housing these wayward teenagers like it's her job.

If I may be critical of myself for one second, if I were doing it again I'd split the chapters up and make them way shorter. So it'd probably be 35-40 chapters rather than 20. I'd also give Dunnmara some more focus but I guess that's what time won't fly is for.

Something I really wanted to dig into when writing it was the themes of the original movie/musical while putting my own twist on them. Looking at the idea that high school feels like forever while you're in it but as the characters get closer to graduating, they realise it isn't and that life goes on outside of it. Hence the moments of Duke and Chandler at prom and graduation starting to mature and step out of their roles of Queen Bee.

On that, if the adults in the original exist to show adults not taking teenagers seriously, Claire is the antithesis to that.

I forgot this until recently but I realised that Veronica started calling JD 'J' and I think it's neat.

Initially I just listened to the Heathers soundtrack while writing this, but when Taylor Swift dropped Lover it became the unofficial soundtrack for this fic.

I love the Martha+JD friendship that emerged from it. SO much. I love that they (to me) felt like they could be friends outside of JD's relationship with Veronica.

I do find it significant that the last few chapters start revolving around the future and how uncertain it can be and growing up and they were written a) during my last year of uni and b) in a pandemic.

Overall I still cannot believe I wrote this. Despite my small criticisms with hindsight and things I'd do differently now, I still consider it one of the best things I've ever written. And personally, I wrote it during such a difficult time in my life. Like the fact that people are still invested in it and still revisiting it and commenting on it four years later is... mind-blowing to me. Truly.

I love all of your fics and I like to re-reading them all the time ♥️ I wanted to ask: what's your favourite trope? There's something you would love to write and something you wouldn't write?

This is such a lovely thing to read first thing in the morning anon I love you so much!!!

This got very long because I am a yapper and a lover, so under the cut it goes.

If we're talking about general tropes, I am always a sucker for found family (real found families not "oh we're friends and somehow the fandom calls us brother-coded) and fake relationships because I love cliches.

If we're talking maxiel specifically, I don't think I really have one? I am down to read anything that grabs my little heart (very easy to do), but if I had to choose one thing you could put in your Esi summoning circle would be devotion. I will always love a "I have loved you all this time, I have been taking care of you even when you didn't notice, I have always been here and I will never leave. I have never stopped loving you, even if it took you so long to reach me here" kind of story. Loyalty in general, if you will. I also love it when you give it the "guard dog" twist. The "I will hunt for you, I will rip anyone else into pieces for you, but when you will reach for my bloody snout I will kneel for you" guard dog twist. There's a reason why Max jumping in with the "you have experience with that?" quote is one of my favorite ever.

Also omega!max not wanting to be an omega and going in stress heat. but that's the less deep answer.

I have SO many things I would love to write. In general, I would love to find the brain who let me write full fics instead of just little snippets again. Right now it seems lost, but I would love to have like. A proper plot and chapters and world building.

If we're talking specific stories, I would love to get a little more angsty than what I usually put out there? I would love to write an apocalypse or post-apocalypse AU. I would also love to write the sort of dystopian AU that sometimes live in my brain that would have tags like 'dehumanization" and "blood" and where Max gets called a Weapon :). I also would love to actually write my wingfic, or the soulmates AU, or the bodyguard socmed AU I will never be talented enough to make, or the slightly Nimona inspired rebellion AU I once plotted in my own voice notes.

So many things, so little brain power :(

Idk if there is something I would never write, but probably something heavily related to drug/alcohol addiction (I almost never can read them either). I was going to say no MCD, but in another past not-specified fandom I did write MCD. Also was going to say something leaning heavily into creepy/horror but I have read those in the past too. So uhm...idk? I never decide what I get to write, I'm only hands. Whatever story decides to make itself at home in my brain long enough for me to type it could one day be written, so I never say never!

Anyway, "mutual pining" and yearning and longing for something they can't have because of [insert a circumstance] is a golden classic Royai signature, which I love, but I should say I absolutely adore the "secret relationship" direction with them (because I want to have nice things in life) - there's still a "longing for something they can't have" aspect involved, but at the same time they are getting to be all cuddly and domestic when they are alone and hidden from the world <333

3. What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics?

Ough, this is a tough question. I'm bad at seeing these kinds of patterns in my own stuff. BUT I think all my fics are some form of friends to lovers or enemies to lovers (or they are intended to be eventually if the fic is pre-relationship).

I'm also pretty sure I use way too many idioms. Like excessively, problematically so. It’s also kinda how I talk though so that’s my excuse 😅

And I really hope that all my fics, even the angsty ones, have moments of humour in them. I know there's almost always something that’s made me laugh out loud while writing, and so I hope anyone reading it also finds it at least mildly amusing.

There's probably more, but I’ll leave it there for now.

4. What detail in [insert fic] are you really proud of?

Am I supposed to specify the fic? Let me know if you had a one in particular in mind for me to think about. I’ll just pick a couple off the top of my head for now.

I like the description in my levihan fic where Levi and his horse wipe out because I had a wreck almost exactly like that when I was working on a ranch. Actually that whole fic is just full of horsey details that please my inner horse girl to no end 😂

Specifically for ganqing, I’m actually really pleased with sneaking in the blueberry cookie detail in Must Love Cats 😂 It’s super minor, I know, but I had already written that part before I was educated about Keqing’s favourite cookie, so then obviously I had to intentionally go back and change it. It makes me feel like I know Keqing a little better now lol.

10. How do you decide what to write?

hmm. I feel like this is a deceptively tricky question, lol. Is it how do I decide what ideas to develop into a full story, or is it how I decide how that story goes? I think the answers to either will be less than satisfying since I barely know myself tbh 😬

For the former, usually there is a scene or image that sparks the initial idea. It might be from a legit prompt, but more often it's just a passing thought, probably inspired from something I saw or experienced at some point. Sometimes the process for writing the story is just getting to that scene, other times it's just starting at point A and seeing how far the idea takes me.

For the latter, I'm pretty bad for not outlining anything and just winging it, so I don't know that I 'decide' anything. It sounds hokey, but I do think I sometimes get to a place where I'm in the character's head enough that they are telling their own story and I'm just transcribing it (this was very much the case for Reversal). I am experimenting with outlining though, and it's been helpful to a point, but having decided what should happen next and actually writing the prose for it are two very different things and I am suffering 🫠

All that aside, there is a part of me that thinks nothing is really decided when it comes to writing, nothing is set in stone. Once I write something I can change it a hundred times after that. I consider everything to be a draft of sorts, even after it's up on ao3 or whatever. And in a way that's very comforting. Writing is flexible in a way that my life is not and I like that very much.

16. What's an AU you would love to read (or have read and loved)?

I love AUs. There are so many good ones! But for a current top three, let's go with University AU, Office AU, and Scifi/fantasy AU. I would read any of these AUs all day long 😂

And the answer is a resounding YES! I reread fics all the time. I have some on rotation because they are just that good they demand to be reread regularly. I honestly love rereading and even rewatching anything that’s made me happy before. Just because I know what’s going to happen doesn’t mean I can relive those feelings again.

My prefered time to write is in the mornings. But with 3 kids, 7 and under, and a job I really only get to write late at night after everyone else is in bed.

12) Who is your favourite character to write for? Why?

Depends upon the fandom:

Avatar - Spider, the Sully kids and the Metkayina kids. I love to explore their relationship dynamics. I love showing that they are still kids but are trying to emulate adults because that is what is expected of them.

LOTR/Hobbit - The Dwarrow (Dwarfs) I just love them, their culture and mannerisms so much. Dwarrow know how to have a good time and enjoy life. They are ready and willing to fight for what they love. Also Dwarrow have flaws that other races, cough Elves cough, don't have/pretend not to have.

Star Wars Universe - Boba Fett, the Clones and Mando. Fett and Mando because it is so much fun to write their internal narrative while their movements and gestures are saying something completely different. Their body language is top notch but their verbal communication skills are lacking. Also strong silent types are a favorite of mine. The Clones because I like showing that they are individuals. They are their own people with their own personalities.

23) Do you prefer listening to music when you’re writing or do you need silence?

I go crazy without some kind of background noise. Whether that noise is music, tv, or kids/dogs yelling and playing doesn't matter as long as there is noise. I come from a family of 7 kids plus foster kids, friends and pets. It was never quiet so the quiet and I don't get along.

33) What’s the biggest compliment you’ve gotten? 

When people leave in-depth comments on my works and/or new chapter updates. I love all comments but when someone takes the time to really talk about my stories it makes me feel amazing. I love having discussions with readers.

48) What’s your favourite trope to write?

I'm not really sure... Probably the 'damsel' in distress, but I like to make it where the 'damsel' basically saves themselves with minimal help from others.

I also love a good 'enemies to friends to lovers' trope. The relationship dynamics for each stage and how they slowly change and develop is fascinating and I love exploring it.

Vampire - Who is your favourite character to write for and is this the character you find easiest to write for?

for my ocs: so i admit i have written more for my ocs wilczek family in the sims. They are the easiest to write about because they are the first ocs i made in sims, so that is probably of my own bias.

for townies: any of the strangetown townies, especially the curious bros + nerv but also jro. (I can't choose lol) though i find the curious bro easiest to write about.

Haunted House - Anything you have wanted to write but have been too scared to try?

relationship dramas. friends/lovers having a heated argument. backstabbing, betraying each others, cheating, rumors and overall shitty people. I avoid it because i avoid confrontation irl, and irl I hate being yelled at, involved in drama etc, (putting my sims through makes my tiny heart break) but i do really want to incorporate it in my stories because drama is part of everyone's life and we fight with loved ones every now and then.

Ghoul - Top 5 tropes that you enjoy writing?

1. Time travel issues / alternative universes

2. Found family

3. Friends to lovers / enemies to friends to lovers / also lovers to enemies /slowburn romance

4. Anti-hero / gray morality

For the fanfic trope ask thing… only one bed, modern au, coffee shop au, omegaverse (personally, nope), and enemies to lovers!

Only one bed: C

Heavily depends on execution. If I have to be completely honest, I feel like it’s a biiit overrated – as in, it’s fun when it’s part of a broader story, but I’ve seen fics that use the only one bed trope as the entire premise and for me that’s just…not enough to make it interesting, most of the time. As part of a larger story and popping up at the right time when we’ve already seen some tension building up between the characters involved, however? I might very well like it!

Modern AU: C

Another “depends on execution” case. The thing is – most pieces of media I’m currently reading fanfic for are already set in modern times, and when it comes to the ones that are not one of the most interesting things about them, in my opinion, is the setting and how the characters interact with it. So taking that away is almost a sure-fire way to also take away one of the reasons why I’m interested in reading fic about that piece of media in the first place. However, if the plot and character dynamics are interesting enough, I can easily get over a boring setting (compared to the original one) and enjoy the story. Like, if the characters are just transported to modern times with no real differences other than their clothes and the fact that they now own a smartphone, chances are I won’t be too impressed with it. But if in the context of the modern AU the characters are given, say, new jobs/occupations and backstories that impact the way they interact with one another, then I’ll probably like it!

Coffee shop AU: D

It’s not an instant nope out or "an avoid at all costs" situation, but I have to be very desperate for content about a given character and/or ship to start reading one. I have no real explanation as to why other than the fact that plots revolving around characters meeting and falling in love in the context of a customer/worker dynamic don’t appeal to me personally (which is why I feel the same about the also somewhat popular flower shop, bakery, tattoo shop AUs and the like). Also, as much as I like fluff when writing and reading established relationship snippets, in my experience a lot of coffee shop AUs tend to be cutesy and overly-saccharine which is just not my style.

Omegaverse: F

Nothing against people who enjoy it, but for me it’s a major squick. There are many reasons why I steer clear of omegaverse fics and if I had to list them all I’d be here for ages. The main ones have to be the reduction of characters to their biological needs and the fact that a lot of them involve pregnancy in some shape or form which is another big nope for me. I’m vaguely aware of how nowadays there are more “nonstandard” omegaverse fics that challenge the classic alpha/omega dynamic, but it’s not enough for me to ignore the discomfort that I get from engaging with the sub-tropes and social roles inherent to the genre, be them subverted or not.

Enemies to lovers: A

GOOD SHIT 👌 👌 👌 Even though these past few years I’ve been gravitating more towards friends/allies to lovers (boringification process as I grow into an adult, I guess), enemies to lovers remains one of my absolute favourite ship dynamics. I’m a sucker for the “I’ve seen you at your worst and vice versa, yet here we are” implication once the relationship progresses towards the lovers part. Bonus points if it’s not a straight path, but the two characters oscillate between one and the other and some weird middle ground in between for a while before eventually settling.

Night Falls Fast: Understanding Suicide by Kay Redfield Jameson which is a nonfiction and is comforting for some reason when I'm in a bad place? Hard to explain but it was kind of soothing to read.

Out of my manga, I really like this one called We’re On Our Own From Here. The two boys in the book start dating right away in the first chapter (friends-to-lovers ❤️) so the entire thing is basically fluffy first love and dates and such. Like, next to no angst. And the art isn’t great but I think it’s still a really cute style actually.

Sorry this is another manga (also cheating bc I watched it as an anime first) but probably My Hero Academia because I wish I could watch Deku and Bakugo’s relationship develop again with fresh eyes. Or maybe Given (childhood friend-to-lover committed suicide and his surviving boyfriend struggles to move on) because I watched the anime first but wish I had read the manga first instead, because the manga was better and it would’ve hit different.
