Hey!!! You commented on my post about limetown haha which is why I’m here. You offered to give podcast recs! What are your favorites?? I’m looking for some new ones
I completely forgot I had this ask, excuse the delay. Here's a selection of 30 podcasts I enjoyed from a broad range of genres: hopefully at least one appeals.
Let me know if you're after something more specific.
Arden: (Investigative, Comedy) On the 25th of December, 2007, heiress and young actress Julie Capsom crashed her car into a tree and fled into a nearby forest clearing, leaving a trail that seemingly vanished into thin air, and a dismembered torso in the trunk. A decade later, Bea, the first reporter on the scene, and Brenda, a detective on the case, are hosting a true crime podcast about it, and neither is remotely impressed with what the other has to say. Arden is also a retelling of various Shakespeare plays.
Desperado: (Supernatural, Adventure, Horror Elements) In a modern world of gods and magic, three young people, all under the patronage of death dieties, embark on the same adventure for different reasons: for safety, for revenge, and to kill The Old Man in the Sky. Fantastic banter and killer action sequences.
The Far Meridian: (Magical Realism) An agoraphobic young woman wakes one day to discover her lighthouse home has travelled to somewhere entirely unfamilar. As this continues to happen day after day, she uses the opportunity to search for her missing brother. A really unique and charming piece of fiction.
Gastronaut: (Sci-Fi) Interstellar travel audio blog of a former food critic as he travels to an active warzone to get firsthand experience with unfamilar cuisine. ft. Disgruntled martian nobility, sinister businessmen, explosive mushrooms, forbidden snacks, rogue revolutionary artists, and the consequences of your actions.
Girl in Space: (Sci-Fi) The Girl In Space lives alone on a space station, doing science, making cheese, rewatching Jurassic Park, and tending to the plants, animals, and artificial sun entrusted to her. It's a little lonely, but not a bad life. Would be a shame if someone came along to ruin it.
The Goblet Wire: (Microfiction, Weird Fiction) A surreal microfiction with horror elements, taking the form of phone calls to an audio-based game in which the voice of the mysterious Dictator leads each player through fantastic and horrific world and story.
Hello From The Hallowoods: (Horror, Supernatural) A dramatic entity beyond your comprehension visits your nightmares to tell stories of the people (in varying degrees of human and alive) that inhabit the strange, deadly, and beautiful Hallowoods, as they find meaning and sometimes eachother.
Hi Nay: (Supernatural Horror) A year after moving to Toronto, sound designer Mari finds herself drawn into helping people around the city with various horrific supernatural encounters due to her babaylan (shaman) family background. It quickly becomes apparent that there's something much more sinister and complicated happening in the background.
Inco: (Microfiction, Sci-Fi) A perpetually exausted interstellar information trader and her peppy AI find a mysterious (read: bratty) boy floating in space and are inadventently pulled into a world political intrigue.
Inn Between: (Fantasy) Ever curious about what the D&D characters get up to at the tavern between sessions? A generally lighter-hearted (with some exceptions) with richly-written and always-growing characters. A really interesting format, too: a lot of the adventure appears in the "next time" and "last time" segments which makes it all flow really nicely. Not a tabletop podcast.
Janus Descending: (Sci-Fi, Horror, Tragedy) A xenoarcheologist and a xenopaleontologist are sent to a study a dead city on a distant world. Nobody likes what they find there. A unique format, with one set of logs presented first to last, and the other last to first. I'd recommend listening to the supercut for this one.
The Kingmaker Histories: (Steampunk, Weird Fiction, Adventure, Fantasy Elements) In the Valorian Socialist Republic 1911, on her 25th birthday, tailor's apprentice Colette experienced the worst headache of her life. As a result, she fleed from town with a human artificer and a fae chef - both now smugglers - pursued by an utterly furious flesh-crafter. I'm not sure I'm selling how good this podcast is but it's very good.
Life With Althaar: (Sci-Fi, Comedy) A human repairman moves to a space station on the edge of human territory that is perpetually on the edge of self-destruction, and ends up with a less-than-ideal last-minute roomate. Althaar is polite, friendly, deeply interested in human culture, and eager to be friends. Unfortunately he belongs to a species that sends humans into a visceral panic at a glance.
Lost Terminal: (Sci-Fi, Hopepunk) Seth is a very lonely AI living on a satellite. His crew were left stranded aboard with no hope of return, and it's been longer than he can count since then. The Earth below him has changed dramatically, and with only a few other AI down there to talk to, he's very lonely. But! He has a plan to make some new friends.
Love and Luck: (Romance, Slice-of-Life and Urban Fantasy Elements) Voice messages cataloguing two young men falling in love and opening a queer dry bar together.
Midnight Radio: (Light Supernatural, Romance) Sybil McIntyre, host of the ever-popular 1950's nightly radio hour, begins exchanging letters with an old fan who has reluctantly returned to visit Sybil's beloved town.
Midst: (Weird Fiction, Western, Sci-Fi and Fantasy Elements) The old-western planetoid islet of Midst floats, rotating steadily, in a sea of reality-warping darkness. Down in the town of Stationary Hill, things are in movement, and vistors from the light above are about to bring unanticipated change. ft a monocycle-riding monster-hunter, radio-famous airship paladins, deadly mica, the universe's peppiest cultist, good dogs, and a really strange businessman.
The Mistholme Museum of Mystery, Morbidity, and Mortality: (Weird Fiction, Supernatural, Urban Fantasy and Horror Elements) A friendly AI tour guide leads you on a tour of the Mistholme Museum, explaining the strange and often alternatural story behind each item.
Monstrous Agonies: (Supernatural, Relationship Advice) An interpersonal advice show for supernatural entities and other people living liminally in the modern world.
Night Shift: (Urban Fantasy, Investigative) Set in a modern world with the addition of magic, which manifests in small inherited skills/traits, can warp people in horrific ways, or can be manipulated with the right science (and intense work) to induce superpowers. Sebastian Fenn is a barista at Night Shift Coffee, but since things are slow he's decided to start a podcast to talk about various mysteries, crimes and conspiracies around the city, and of course finds himself deeper in them than he'd intended.
The Pasithea Powder: (Sci-Fi, Thriller Elements? I think?) The last major interplanetary war was full of atrocities, but none more infamous then the creation of Pasithea Powder, a memory altering drug which was used to horrible effect and landed it's entire team of creators in prison. So when decorated war hero Captain Sophie Green sees one of them wandering free, worlds away from his prison, she gets in touch with a very old, estranged friend: one Dr. Jane Gonzalez, who's behind bars for the very same reason.
SCP: Find Us Alive: (Weird Fiction, Supernatural, Horror and Slice-of-Life elements) You don't need to know anything about SCP to enjoy this. A research team gets trapped in an underground research facility when the complex collapses and the building is dragged into a pocket dimension. The tear it was designed to study begins creating tiny copies of itself, generating strange entities the team needs to deal with. And as if that wasn't enough, the entire situation physically resets itself every 30 days. And yet, this is genuinely also an office comedy.
Second Star to the Left: (Sci-Fi) Audio logs of a scout sent to explore and establish early infastructure new world, and the communications with the minder in charge of keeping her alive.
Seen and Not Heard: (Slice-of-Life, Drama) Seen and Not Heard follows Bet, who's still adjusting to life a year after a bout of severe illness, and the resulting hearing loss it caused. It's about the ways we make connection, and food, and art, and different kinds of grief.
The Silt Verses: (Horror) In a modern world where gods are abundant, frequently both commercialised and restricted, two devotees of an outlawed river god go on a pilgrimage.
SINKHOLE: (Sci-Fi, Weird Fiction) Forum posts from a data restoration community in a near future where the human brain is its own computer and one city hosts a massive void.
Starfall: (Fantasy) Seeking to escape her mysterious past and find some purpose, a young swordswoman joins a travelling actor's troupe. This new life is unfamilar and sometimes stressful, but she's taken under the wing of stagehand Fel, who's determined to help her feel welcome as she experiences the figurative and literal magic of the theatre for the first time.
The Tower: (Weird Fiction) A low-key, meditative podcasy about a young woman who decides to climb a seemingly endless tower. Gorgeous sound design.
The Vesta Clinic: (Sci-Fi) New GP Dr. Fae Underwood, with the expert transcription skills of resident AI Sec, writes up patient reports on human and alien patients of The Vesta Clinic, a medical clinic on the edge of human space. Really comfy and creative.
Victoriocity: (Steampunk, Mystery) Set in the steam-powered Victorian city of Even Greater London, an aspiring journalist and a tired detective find themselves working together to solve a strange murder. I say Victorian but as queen Victoria is now an extensive grandiocity of cyborg components following seven only-kind-of-successful assassinations, you may need to adjust expectations a little.

Audio Drama Recommendations, Pt. II
Tumblr media
For part one, click here. I went on another audio drama binge and I found some that were pretty fun to listen to. I usually tend to go after the ones that are completed because the longer the wait, the more likely I will forget the details, but this time I just went for anything that caught my attention. This also isn’t in any particular order.
The Magnus Archives – is a horror fiction anthology podcast written by Jonathan Sims, directed by Alexander J. Newall, and distributed by Rusty Quill.
The new Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute, Jonathan Sims, attempts to bring a seemingly neglected collection of people’s testimonials of their encounters with the supernatural up to date, converting them to audio and supplementing them with follow-up work from his small but dedicated team. [COMPLETED]
It has five seasons, each 40 episodes long, as well as additional content such as Q&As, non-canon fan-submitted statements and one-off episodes that tie in with Rusty Quill's other podcasts.
It does start out slow and maybe at some point you’ll be wondering where is this going and what does some of these episodes have to do with the overall story, but it does all eventually connect. Your patience will pay off because once the build-up is done it picks up and things get really interesting!
Unwell – is a horror podcast starring Clarisa Cherie Rios and produced by Hartlife NFP.
The story follows Lillian Harper who has returned home to Mt. Absalom, Ohio to care for her estranged mother Dorothy after an injury. Living in the town's boarding house which has been run by her family for generations, she discovers conspiracies, ghosts, and a new family in the house's strange assortment of residents. [ONGOING]
This audio drama has five seasons which runs for 12 episodes. It currently has 54 episodes in total and each one is about 20-30 minutes long. New episodes are released fortnightly (biweekly) on Wednesdays. They take a mid-season break between episodes 6 and 7.
Bridgewater – is a supernatural thriller audio drama produced by Grim & Mild and by iHeartRadio, created by Aaron Mahnke and written/directed by Lauren Shippen.
Folklore professor Jeremy Bradshaw is pulled into the mysterious 1980 disappearance of his police officer father, Thomas, by new evidence that threatens to upend decades of certainty. Along the way, he’s helped by some unlikely partners who challenge everything he believes in, and ultimately tries to answer the question: can the past actually be rewritten?
Together with his father’s former partner, retired Detective Anne Becker, Jeremy must chase the clues that will tell him whether his father really did fall victim to a Satanic cult in the Bridgewater Triangle—or something much more dark and unexplainable. [ONGOING]
It has two seasons, the first consist of 10 episodes and the second has 12 episodes. Each one runs about 20-30 minutes long. Season three was put on hold when there was news of a possible television series. However, that fell through and by then everyone was working on other projects. So a season three, well, that’s pretty much up in the air.
It stars Misha Collins (Supernatural), Melissa Ponzio (Teen Wolf), Nathan Fillion (Firefly, The Rookie), Karan Soni (Deadpool), Kristin Bauer (True Blood), Hilarie Burton Morgan (The Walking Dead, One Tree Hill), Wil Wheaton (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Jonathan Joss (The Magnificent Seven, Parks and Rec) and Lori Alan (Spongebob Squarepants, Family Guy).
The Lovecraft Investigations -- is a mystery thriller/horror fiction podcast written and directed by Julian Simpson, based on several works of H.P. Lovecraft. It’s produced by Sweet Talk Productions for BBC Radio 4. It concluded with three seasons and each episode is about 25-30 minutes long. There might be a fourth season in the works, but even if there isn’t the series is considered to be finished.
The first season starts off with an investigation into the disappearance of a young man, Charles Dexter Ward from a locked room in an asylum. [COMPLETED]
It stars Barnaby Kay (Shakespeare in Love), Jana Carpenter (Doctor Who), Nicola Walker (MI-5, Unforgotten), Mark Bazeley (The Queen, The Bourne Ultimatum), Phoebe Fox (Eye in the Sky, The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death), Steven Mackintosh (Rang De Basanti, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), Samuel Barnett (Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Penny Dreadful), Alun Armstrong (Sleepy Hollow, The Mummy Returns), Adam Godley (The Great, The Umbrella Academy), and so on.
Midnight Burger – is a monthly sci-fi audio drama about a diner at the end – and somehow the beginning – of the universe.
When Gloria took a waitressing job at Midnight Burger outside of Phoenix, she didn’t realize she was now an employee of a time-traveling, dimension-spanning diner. Every day Midnight Burger appears somewhere new in the cosmos along with its staff: a galactic drifter, a rogue theoretical physicist, a sentient old-timey radio, and some guy named Caspar.
No one knows who built Midnight Burger or how it works, but when it appears there's always someone around who could really use a cup of coffee. Come by any time, we open at six. [ONGOING]
The audio drama currently has three seasons and each episodes averages about 30 minutes to an hour or so.
Rex Rivetter: Private Eye – is a 1950s-style noir detective audio drama written by Greg McAfee, directed by Rhiannon McAfee, and produced in San Diego, CA by Downstairs Entertainment with editing and sound design by Steve Murdock. The Rex Rivetter theme “Nightmare” by the Artie Shaw Orchestra is used with permission of Music Sales Corp.
The year is 1955. Tinsel town. The land of make-believe. It's a time of growth in American prosperity. Especially in Los Angeles. Here, dreams are bought and sold.
But there's a seedier side to the City of Angels, the shadows where pimps and narcotics pushers live, where organized crime stands just around every corner with one hand out, and the other wrapped around a roscoe. It's a city full of fancy dames and slick cons, where bookies know the vig, so you better, too.
Some folks call it noir or pulp fiction. But for a private eye named Rex Rivetter, it's home. [ONGOING]
It has four seasons and each one runs about 20-30 minutes long. Due to the pandemic, it is still unknown if season five will ever come out and so far there hasn’t been any news about it either.
Mansfield Mysteries – is a satirical, cozy murder whodunit written by Amy Henson, directed by Nicholas Hoyt and produced by The QuaranTeam.
It follows the inquisitive, martini-loving socialite Dorinda Mansfield and is set in quiet, affluent Berkshire Bay. So far it only has one season, which contains nine hilarious episodes, each three-chapter story finds Dorinda wrapped up in a new murder. With the help of her devoted daughter, Stacey—as well as the occasional frenemy—Dorinda digs for clues, navigates Berkshire Bay’s elite social circles, and sifts through years’ worth of grudges and motives. In this company town, no one can be trusted, and everyone has something to hide.
Whether at the Labor Day Extravaganza, the Halloween Tennis Club Open, or secret karaoke night, Dorinda sets out to find the real killer before they get away with murder… Just as soon as she orders her martini! [COMPLETED]
If you’re looking for a bite-sized audio drama, this might be for you. It has three seasons (or chapters) and each one only takes three episodes to complete its tales, which is fun, amusing and will keep you entertained while you’re working on something or resting your eyes.
The Call of the Void – is an indie science fiction mystery audio drama created and written by Josie Eli Herman and Michael Alan Herman. It’s produced by Acorn Arts & Entertainment. It contains three seasons of 28 episodes and each one is about 25-30 minutes long with a cast of about 35 actors.
In the bustling streets of New Orleans, a tour guide and a palm-reading outcast team up to unravel the mystery behind cases of sudden insanity besetting the city. [COMPLETED]
Wolf 359 – is a science fiction audio drama created by Gabriel Urbina and produced by Gabriel Urbina and Zach Valenti under Kinda Evil Genius Productions. It consists of four seasons with 61 episodes in total and each one is about 25-40 minutes long.
It is set on board the U.S.S. Hephaestus space station orbiting the star Wolf 359 on a deep space survey mission. The dysfunctional crew deals with daily life-or-death emergencies, while searching for signs of alien life and discovering there might be more to their mission than they thought. [COMPLETED]

Audio Drama Recs and Reviews
The Mistholme Museum of Mystery, Morbidity, and Mortality. If you ever wanted to get an unhealthy emotional attachment to the AI and anxiety - this one is for you. The first season seems like a collection of stories about supernatural objects in the museum. In later seasons we get a pretty high stakes plot with many cliffhangers + stories about the objects. Also has no romance as a major plot and it rarely appears in the stories so as an aro I love this one.
Hello From the Hallowoods. Well this one is very queer to the point of neopronouns and genderfluidity queer. Great Age range representation. Also very anti capitalist. There are many (no seriously like MANY) characters, engaging plot and one narrator with a very soothing voice telling us a story about humanity last days, demons, ghosts, libraries and revenants. Personally I feel like it has a very 1-world contry point of view but the pros outweigh the cons.
The Wrong Station. If you are not a fan of overarching plots and need good quality horror content this one is for you. It's a horror anthology podcast - every episode has a different setting though there are some connections between the names my favs are set in the past (esp. Alternative Italy or Byzantine) but is also has some pretty decent midwesrern gothic and future horror episodes.
The Silt Verses. This one is about gods and those that have to deal with them. About the world where ideal rules over the material and the entities made of those ideas are hungry gods. Not as hungry as the system that exploits those ideas though. The most terrifying thing about this podcast is how small the difference is between this world and ours is. This one is made by I Am in Eskew authors so give it a try if you need a good existential and relatable horror. Also has the great aroace feral old woman as one of the characters and I love her with all my heart.
True Tales of the Illuminati This one is a short comedy telling about shenanigans in the Illuminati organization and all the ways they fuck their shit up. First two seasons are set in the Ancient Egypt - 3rd in the 20th century America. If you want something light hearted, short and similar to the Parks and Recreation - try this one. If you want more audio drama workplace comedy go and listen to the New Ages.
Life with Althaar - sci-fi podcast/workplace comedy about a space station + awkward alien roommate who wants to be friends with a human. It uses word gentlebeings, okay?! I loved the first 2 seasons but the 3 season wasn't updated in a year, so i am waiting if it's come back. This is essentially my comfort podcast so i do hope it comes back to us.

HI so I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your podcast and I listened to Wooden Overcoats because I heard you recommend it and now i absolutely love Wooden Overcoats!!! (Both finales had me making excited screaming noises and walking around in circles in my room while i liveblogged them to my girlfriend)
Do you have other recommendations in a similar vein?
Oh my goodness, sorry for the delay on this but YAY Wooden Overcoats! It's an absolute all-time fave of ours and needless to say there was much screaming in our household as well. Would die for Antigone Funn tbh.
As far as recs go, have you listened to Victoriocity? It's an alternate-Victorian-London mystery/comedy, and Tom Crowley (Eric Chapman from Wooden Overcoats) plays one of the leads. The theme song is so dramatic and catchy, it's got really snappy dialogue like Wooden Overcoats, the voice acting is across the board excellent, and we would die for Clara Entwhistle.
Some other recs, in case you haven't already checked these out:
Death by Dying: Super dark comedy about an obituary writer in a very odd town--some of our hardest laughs in any audio drama and a show that our writers quote on the DAILY
Wolf 359 and EOS10: Likely you've already listened to one or the other at this point, they're classics for a reason, but just in case you haven't--do it! These were two of our first intros to audio fiction and have been SUPER formative in teaching us how to write comedy and drama for the medium. Really great comedies that also do a fantastic job of sneakily getting you to care about the characters SO much.
Midnight Burger: Look, this show frickin rocks. Tight writing, incredibly clear character writing, just arrives from minute one with such a strong sense of tone and identity. If you like our show's vague Doctor Who vibes, there is literally no way you won't love the crew of Midnight Burger.
Mockery Manor: More of a mystery than outright comedy vibe, but the MUSIC! The SOUND DESIGN! The SETTING! It's a murder-mystery 80s show set at a theme park in the UK, with jingles left and right. We did in fact buy the soundtrack the day it became available, it's bangers beginning to end.
Brimstone Valley Mall: Speaking of music! A 90s comedy about a group of demons who work in a shopping mall and have a band. This ensemble is a frickin delight and we love a Hot Topic joke.
Two Flat Earthers Kidnap a Freemason: Full disclosure, our producer/Narrator, Lauren, is a voice actor on this, but we think if you like the satire of our show and our particular brand of morally grey protagonists, this one will be right up your alley. We'd tell you the plot but...it's kinda right there in the title, innit?
BONUS: If you have Audible or want to do some creative searching, we also highly recommend the BBC radio shows Bleak Expectations and Cabin Pressure--both incredibly funny and well-made audio sitcoms! These two shows were our gateway into audio fiction and remain the gold standard in our mind for comedy scripts that boast a frankly ridiculous joke-per-minute ratio.
We will likely add on shows from here as we think of them, but hopefully this gets you started with something that sounds fun!

This is a bit niche but Babs and Tim interacting with each other fic recs if you have any? Or if not just young justice being insane lol
i actually don't think i've seen too much of babs & tim... i do have some insane yj tho
by @charleswaterloo
There is an enormous container ship called the Ever Given stuck in the Suez Canal. Young Justice is on the case. During their short adventure, they also: make a massive sand sculpture, enjoy some fanfiction, and unblock the Suez Canal. Not in that order. * ‘I am thinking,’ Tim said, with extreme calm, ‘that you have made something that looks like a very large penis when viewed from above.’
‘It’s a dick and balls, yeah,’ Bart said without embarrassment. ‘It’s poetic! I’m ending the journey like it started.’ * ‘Did you-’ Dick began, laughing so hard he couldn’t breathe, ‘did you really tell him to: "at least make the shaft bigger”? Bart told Wally, and he told me but I have to know if it’s true, Tim. My life depends on it.’
i've probably recc'd this before but this crackfic should be given a plaque
by UntoldDepths
Tim's got a board zoom meeting in 15 minutes at Way Too Early and nothing ready to wear. His friends are absolutely no help and probably half the reason.
young justice are thirstyyyy
by @withthekeyisking-writer
When an alien invasion falls upon the Earth, Dick loses everything he holds dear.
Until he wakes up again.
Actually a crime this fic doesn't have more recognition
by Jonaira, Kimi_f
Conner was sure of only three things. One, Tim was a vampire. Two, he maybe really liked the guy. And three, Tim unconditionally and irrevocably hated him.
Conner has never really fit in. Pulled between a life of luxury, high expectations, and neglect with Lex or anonymity, living paycheck to paycheck, and awkward distance with Clark, Conner chooses the latter. He abandons his life in sunny Hawaii, leaving him miserable and biding his time until he can move out. That is, until he meets the dazzling Wayne family, and decides to unravel their supernatural mystery. Whether the Waynes like it or not.
Twilight AU. Kind of.
I have no excuse.
by Killthespare
The League has fallen. The team is dead. All that’s left is for Dick Grayson to pick up the pieces and move forward.
Easier said than done.
AU where dick grayson has to rebuild superhero society after failsafe kills a bunch of people. CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED!!!!!!! I'M NOT JOKING, PEOPLE SHOULD BE PROSECUTED
by wearealltalesintheend
Instead of dropping out of college to join Bludhaven Police Department, Dick Grayson takes a job at Gotham's Parks and Recreation Department.
In different ways, everyone follows.
Or, Parks and Rec AU
how much drama could one park even have?
by JadedJewels
Kyle lives in New York. Well, when he’s not living on Oa. He’s also kinda sorta dating Jason Todd and the batkids want to see what he’s all about. Kyle just thinks he’s lucky Batman himself hasn’t climbed through his window.
technically not about young justice but idc I wanted to rec it so here it is
by @leaping--lizards
Teen Titans Rebirth: Damian doesn't have any friends Me: okay but how about no
or, Damian Wayne's thirteenth birthday, done right.
An entire fic of damian being like that one tt audio "you asked me to make friends, I made friends. it was a task. i complete tasks."

I would love rap recs if you have any. I remember enjoying Sage Francis many many years ago, and I tried to get into aesop rock around the same time but his voice is so gravelly I couldn't understand most of the lyrics (bums me out cause I really appreciate smart clever songwriting! But alas I do not have the best audio processing).
My tastes are pretty underdeveloped (I like the Hamilton soundtrack a lot lol, and also Bottoms Up by Trey Songz always made my ears weirdly happy tho I guess that's more R&B) but I think a big part is I like there to be a lot of instruments involved in the music, or at least like a strong focus on melody layered over the rapping? And also of course being able to parse the words without a lot of struggling is pretty crucial.
If you are not interested in making bespoke recommendations that's totally reasonable, just figured I'd ask in case that sounds fun to you :P I've tried to find rap I enjoyed over the years, but it's been hard to even figure out what traits matter to me, let alone find music that has those traits.
oh man this is a fascinating ask lemme think a bit
1) keying off of e.g. the Hamilton thing: there’s no shame in enjoying more mainstream-ish rap.  eminem was popular for a variety of reasons, but one of them, imo, is that most his songs had a strong hook and a pretty “singable” chorus, which makes it more accessible if you are Not Super Familiar With Rap.  similarly, like, i find a lot of 90s/00s era Jay-Z to be really accessible for the same reason.  pretty much every track on The Black Album rules, for instance.  in particular i’ll point out “Lucifer” from that album—it has a *very* cool backing track, which is catchy/interesting, but also very *instrumentally sparse*—which makes it much easier to hear the lyrics, if "muddy" production is the thing that causes the audio issues.  (if you end up digging that one, i’d probably try dropping it into a Pandora radio station or something to try and find more like it, because while i can’t think of a rapper that *exclusively* does that kind of sparse-ish style of production, there’s definitely a lot of *individual* rap songs that are done in that style (kanye’s done a ton of them), and you could probably get a good mixtape of 'em.)
2) i really liked team teamwork’s video game music / rap mashup albums and alex kresovich's "gold n' fly" Goldeneye 64 soundtrack / rap mashup album!  like they played a pretty big role in me getting as into the genre as i am.  but seriously they’re quite good.  if you happen to know the particular game soundtrack then you already know you like the music; even if you don't know the music these are high-quality enough they still work well with the vocal samples; and if you REALLY like how a particular rapper sounds, you can just go look up the original dude and have a blast. (e.g. i first heard Busta Rhymes on this mashup of his "Don't Touch Me" with the Gerudo Valley theme, and was like "this dude rules", so then i looked him up and discovered i liked "Put Your Eyes Where My Hands Can See" even more, became obsessed, etc)
(relatedly, if you're a linkin park enjoyer: you know there's a whole official album where they mashed up with jay-z? it rules)
3) so deltron 3030 was like a meme / indie darling on /r/hiphopheads for a while, and for good reason.  del generally has a slower flow than a lot of comparable rappers, plus pretty clean production, plus he is just rapping about being a cool mech soldier in the year 3030. fun as heck.  so like if you’re trying to get a slightly “deeper” cut than what you'd hear on top 40, this is a pretty good starting point
4) this is very much a ymmv thing / i VERY possibly listen to the whole genre very wrong, but there’s classes of rappers where i’m less concerned about hearing the each of the lyrics clearly and i'm more, like... thinking of the voice as an instrument with sonic properties that may-or-may-not involve hearing the words clearly?  like, twista’s flow is just very aggressive and percussive and absolutely *thrilling* to listen to ("helicopter" style), but did i catch every word in there?  absolutely not lmao. and i think that's part of the point! like yeah if you listen a million times you'll eventually pick the words up, but there's plenty of rappers where i only enjoy their wordplay after i enjoyed the sound/vibes on the first listen or whatever
5) i think it helps if the song and/or music video is funny lol. "just a friend" is so fun. "damn it feels good to be a gangster" is so fun. damn weren't the late 80s / early 90s fun as hell. maybe we should all exclusively just listening to hip-hop from that era
anyway yeah HOPE THAT HELPS. if anyone else has ideas sound off

Anyway, from what you're written about Eleventh and Clara and companion-focus and 'sibling energy' I think you'd love the Valarie Lockwood audios. There's a genuine focus on Valarie and her emotions and perspective, 'Doctor showboating and being scary' moments fail and he gets called out for it and does better (hard not to read as a response to Smith era as exists on TV, however much one thinks the 'Moffat was subverting it all along' defence holds), there's absolutely no forced 'sexiness' jokes, it's all delightfully queer
ah interesting. i'd be very curious to listen to some eleven, i think the audio adventures can probably unlock more of him than m*ffat was able to (and certainly give the companion more stuff to do)
-- I'm going to listen to everything eight-wise i can get my hands on first, because eight exists 99.999% in the audios and i want to get to know her before i careen into other doctors (the tenth doctor ones i listened to were a bit of a fluke, because i'd heard snippets of them on tumblr and i am a context-seeker always, but from now on ten is also firmly parked until further notice -- probably more parked than anyone else, because i dont have as many questions about ten as other characters)
thanks for the rec though, i'll add it to my priorities list!

Here’s a bit of an update to this post. Put in a new post because for some reason I can’t get the reblog to let me upload audio files. It’s almost like Tumblr is a fucking mess. I don’t usually complain about it, I see posts going around complaining about the updates every time they happen, and I agree with them but don’t say anything because I figure as long as they let me keep writing my words and posting them that’s all I need here even if the new UI is absolute bullshit… but God, it’s getting really bad. Anyway. That’s not the point, I’ve just spent a while trying to get a reblog to do what it’s supposed to do and I’m annoyed about it. Please consider my annoyance registered.
It doesn't even really need to be a reblog, because it doesn't follow up on that much stuff from that other post. Mainly, it's an update to that one because that post talked about the Nish Kumar/Mike Birbiglia podcast episode, and this post will also do that, so I wanted to put them together, but it's fine.
It’s a bit of an odd coincidence, that someone sent me a 2021 episode of Nish Kumar on Mike Birbiglia’s podcast last week, as well as sending me all his Mike Birbiglia comedy albums because he’d finally talked me into listening to the guy. Partly with the help of Nish Kumar, who spoke so highly of Mike Birbiglia on that 2021 podcast that I said, okay, that endorsement is enough for me. Then, a couple of days later, there was a new episode of the Comedian’s Comedian podcast, featuring Nish Kumar talking about his newly released special, in which he says he likes that he was able to “Birbiglia-fy” this show more than his previous ones. He even specifically references that podcast episode in 2021, and says the advice he got on there from Mike Birbiglia inspired him to make Your Power Your Control into what it ended up becoming. Which is quite cool, and I’ve gotten into Birbiglia’s comedy just in time to understand what he’s talking about.
There are also some references to Kitson, obviously, because you can’t talk about the history of narrative comedy without discussing the legacy – for better or for worse – of Daniel Kitson.
I do see what he's talking about more clearly now. I still have questions about what this type of comedy is, but I enjoy the way Nish Kumar explains it here. A comedy show created by putting everything in the right order. By spreading out the "general stand-up" bits across a show so they wrap around the main story, instead of doing the main story and then the general bits, so then the main story becomes a general bit in itself. I find it really interesting to hear Nish Kumar get that advice on Mike Birbiglia's podcast in 2021, then watch the show in which he took that advice that was filmed in 2022 (Your Power Your Control, now out on video, everyone needs to watch it, message me for a link), then hear him talk in 2023 about how the advice he got on Birbiglia's podcast helped him structure it that way. He's right, it turns out! He did do all those things in that show! Which would have been a more interesting connection if I could have made this a reblog of the previous post, and then more easily referred people to the Kumar/Birbiglia clip that was embedded in that post, to compare to the Kumar/Goldsmith clip in this one.
I did put a lot of stock in Nish Kumar recommending Mike Birbiglia, though, because in addition to making the type of comedy I absolutely love, Nish Kumar happens to also love the type of comedy I love. He has a bit in one of his older stand-up shows about how he finds it weird to be a comedian after spending so many years obsessed with comedy, he's basically a comedy fan but his fandom got out of hand and now he's on stage. And I love the kind of comedy fan Nish Kumar is.
Tumblr media
Okay - The Office, Parks and Rec, 30 Rock, and Community are hardly the smallest of underground shows, where it's a massive coincidence if I love them and someone else does too. But still, I enjoy that he got asked about the TV shows he watches over and over, and his answer is pretty well the same as mine. That's not the exact same as the answer to "What's your favourite TV show?" I have lots of favourite TV shows. I have a small number of TV shows saved on my main hard drive, because I've seen every single episode over and over and over, to the point where I have every episode pretty much memorized, and if I'm looking for a comfort show to go back to while eating a meal, I keep those easily accessible. That small number of shows includes 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, and Community. The Office US was on the list, has sort of dropped off, I don't love it as much as those others, but I did used to re-watch episodes of it constantly, I've seen every episode more than probably any other show except 30 Rock/Parks and Rec.
And obviously, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is a fucking masterpiece. If anyone else likes Garth Marenghi and Nish Kumar, there's a great episode of the Rule of Three podcast where Nish waxes poetic for an hour about how amazing that show is.
Also, of course, Nish Kumar's a rare person who can rival me in being a fan of the Chocolate Milk Gang. There are lots of clips out there of him talking sincerely and beautifully about his massive respect for Daniel Kitson and David O'Doherty, but I can't be bothered to find them right now, and would prefer to represent that with this:
Tumblr media
And then, obviously, there's this, the compilation I made last year of Nish Kumar being adorable in his fandom of John Oliver:
And there are quite a few instances on The Bugle the suggest Nish Kumar probably would, if called upon to do so, die for Andy Zaltzman. Or at least throw hands to defend his honour. I mean - I'm kind of joking, but honestly, you can feel the underlying respect for that man radiating from Nish Kumar even when they're talking shit.
This latest episode he did of the Comedian's Comedian podcast also reminds me of how quick he is to credit Bridget Christie as a massive influence on him, and talk about how great her work is, which I really like.
The point is that Nish Kumar knows quite a lot about British and American comedy. So if he says a dichotomy between the two exists and Birbiglia is on the British side of it despite being American, there is something to that. I will take his word over my brother's on that (a statement that would make more sense if this were a reblog of my other post where I discuss being confused about it).
The other point is that various people have been trying to get me to listen to Mike Birbiglia for about a year, but the only endorsement I really needed was Nish Kumar. If you're trying to get me to listen to something, find out of Nish Kumar's ever praised it, and then play me a clip of him doing so, and that'll work. I'd probably give, like, Jeff Dunham a try if you told me Nish Kumar likes it (I don't know why that was the first person who came to my mind when I tried to think of a comedian I'd never get into, but I think it's a good example).

Le Comfort Tags
this is going to be long
these tags are brought to you by @burntotears
Comfort Movie(s): 2005 Pride & Prejudice, Jurassic Park, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, A Little Princess, The Secret Garden, and Under the Tuscan Sun. Can't remember how well some of those aged...
Comfort Food (s): (okay so for about 9 months I had long covid before we had vaccines, which means, weirdly, my body developed allergies to a lot of foods I could tolerate previously. Old faves have *)
Cheese, big glass of Milk*, Pizza*, Tortellini Alfredo*, Miso Soup, Diet Coke*, Oat Milk Ice Cream, Teriyaki Salmon, Petit Fours*, Pastry Cream*.
Comfort Clothing: A very oversized T Shirt and nothing else or baggy pants and a velvet crop top. Very specific but it's my favorite thing to wear when I'm being cozy. I do like big sweaters but if I get overheated the feeling is ruined immediately.
Comfort Song(s): I apologize in advance but there's no way to make this short. Daydreaming means I'm always switching between a line up of songs that transport my brain to other places or set off specific feelings. Some probably don't sound comfortable per se but the familiarity is what gets me. A few have been my go-to escapism songs for well over a decade. And of course the line up is always in flux. Also, like, fanfic mood music is a must yo.
BZY-The Earth Laughs In Flowers Jean Dawson - Pirate Radio The 1975 - Happiness Great Heart - Johnny Clegg & Savuka the verve - bittersweet symphony Deco - bittersweet symphony New Radicals - You Get What You Give Tracy Chapman - Crossroads Temple of the Dog(aka soundgarden and pearl jam) - Hunger Strike ODESZA - Line Of Sight Steve Conte - Call Me Call Me The Midnight - We Move Forward Savage Garden - I Want You Stewart Copeland (yes from the police) - Misty Bog (spyro the dragon) Angels & Airwaves - The Adventure Broke for Free - A Beautiful Life Cressida- 6am (Kyau & Albert Remix) Niklas Harding & Arcane- Ice Beach Michael Cassette - Wateresque Nitrous Oxide - North Pole Fire Flowerz - Sugar
Technically you could probably put any intro and outro from the og toonami line up on this list. I stg it's like getting smacked in the face with nostalgia to hear anything from that time.
*if a song is like 8 minutes jump ahead 2. That usually gets you past the warm up.
Comfort Book(s): The Birth of the Firebringer, Vol 1. of the Sailor Moon manga, Pride and Prejudice (specifically the audio version by the sleepy bookshelf) which is also on spotify, and probably ACOMAF (the rest can rot but I still love that ONE book.)
Comfort Game(s): Spyro the Dragon (I know this game too well), Tomba 1 & 2, Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon DS Cute, Dewprism/Threads of Fate.
Comfort Streamers:
Tbh although I check in with a handful of streamers from time to time Ray is probably who I watch the most. Quick wit, sarcasm, and snark are my favorite things, so Ray is my go-to. (yes, that Ray. He escaped RT a long time ago. It's a whole thing that's been talked about by him. He's a safe one, don't worry.)
RayNarvaezJr.
dude plays pretty much anything and everything but if I had to rec somewhere to start go with either pokemon or stardew if you want chill vibes, or watch his plays of any of the resident evil or yakuza games for fuckery.
Comfort Youtube Channels:
I'm adding this because I use a few when I'm overwhelmed and need something familiar or gentle to watch. Separate from gaming stuff.
Kennie JD - Bad movies and a beat playlist (kennie is just hysterical anyway but omg these reviews. The Twilight ones in particular get me every time.
Anti-Chef - Watch Jamie attempt to cook through Julia Child's cookbooks. It's very charming and you're always rooting for him. He's very real about the process which is nice.
Dominic Noble - Lost in Adaptation. Exactly what it sounds like. Books vs Film and TV but he's also not an ass about it so it's a pleasant experience.
nigiricco - Bento videos like every three days it's wild but imo soothing to watch.
Sophia Phan - Movie Commentaries. She's adorable.
Imamu room - MORE BENTO
Joconde's baking - Really soothing baking videos imo as long as you don't mind the sound of it. Like almost asmr if that helps.
Chocolate Cacao - The master of baking chocolate I stg
José - Video essays and damn good retrospectives including scrubs, that 70s show, boy meets world, the golden girls, cheers, the fresh prince etc.
The Movie Budz - More great film commentary
PBS Idea Channel - Okay so this channel has been dead for 6 years now but it's STILL full of amazing videos that I have yet to see matched in their depth and scope. Plus it's nearly all pop culture which keeps it fun an accessible. If you aren't familiar with PBSID I highly suggest sifting through the archive. There are videos on everything from The Pokemon War Theory to How Does Night Vale Confront Us With the Unknown?
Hbomberguy - The dude with the Pathologic video. His other stuff is really good too.
Folding Ideas - Video essays and commentary plus some really good deep dives into other subjects like NFTs, Flat Earthers, and the Ralph Bakshi Lord of the Rings uh adaptation?
Primitive Technology - Okay, you know those videos YT recs where it looks like two guys built a hotel out of bamboo or something but it's clearly fake? This is the guy they're mimicking.
Peaceful Cuisine - Mostly vegan and/or gluten free cooking. Most videos have an asmr version and a version with soft music playing.
Tumblr media
Was all of that necessary? Probably not. I am now tired. To think I trimmed down what I was going to add.
Tagging folks but like everyone feel free to do it, and no you don't have to do all the categories I did. I added the youtube videos and went kinda wild with music.
Going by my activity page again otherwise this will be too long

( I try and recommend everything I love on Ao3, as well as here so dig into my "fic rec" tag if you feel like it ,cuz if i start listing this post will never end….)
Also, I try and keep active -trying to loose weight yet again smh - and one of my favourite sports things to do is walk in the park with an audio book as entertainment.Currently listening to the Soulbound book series by Hailey Turner and I absolutely LOVE it !!!
Last song: Last music video I watched was the english version of Why don't you stay
Right now, while writing this, i'm listening to Phases by PRETTYMUCH and 2 of my current favorites are Armor by Landon Austin and Devil Doesn't Bargain by Alec Benjamin cuz my brain associate them with KinnPorsche and VegasPete respectively - the KP brain rot has taken deep roots, my friend !
Last Series: I'm in the same boat as you - "Kinnporsche, because I literally can't watch anything else." - *smh mournfully*nothing else is worthy !
Last movie: We're two peas in a pod- " I don't have the attention span to watch movies" -ME TOO but i bit the bullet and watched Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ...It was ….sigh…*silently shakes my head while making a face * i . do. not. recommend it …
But the last movie I really liked and know will be getting a sequel is The Old Guard - immortal husbands AND Charlize Theron kicking ass ! what's not to love?
Currently working on: Absolutely nothing , i'm consuming all the content while contributing nothing , nada, zilch …¯\_(ツ)_/¯. pls don't hate me ...
Passing this along to my mutuals: @maleficent-cannoli , @nattaphum , @lutawolf , @luckydragon10 , @phoenix343 , @cityofheavenlyships , and some new friends I follow @moerusai , @biochemjess, @iffervescent , @kurtstiel, @yeetlegay
Pls, feel free to ignore this if you don't feel like it :)

Not sorry in advance since you guys really liked the one I did with Parks and Rec. I tried to put in a little more effort. Ah, the shit sleep deprivation does to a person before going to Six Flags...
