Mien Bao House, 1718 N Milpitas Blvd, Milpitas, CA 95035
Tumblr media
Mien Bao House replaced another Chinese bakery. I went late in the evening and they were sold out of all their baked buns and egg tarts. They still had cake slices, cookies, cupcakes, steamed baos, frozen dumplings and buns, muffins, and coconut tarts.
The refrigerated cake rolls looked terrible. The frosting was cracked and dried looking. I should have walked out but most Chinese bakeries had closed and MBH was actually open in the evening.
Fried sesame ball: Thick, chewy glutinous rice exterior, red bean filling inside was a strange shade of pink and didn’t have much red bean flavor, served cold. It was below average.
Big chicken bun ($5): Truly meal size with Chinese sausage, a hard-boiled egg, wood ear mushrooms, and chicken pieces. The bun was kept in a warm and probably steaming for hours. The bun was soggy on the bottom but the filling tasted decent. The exterior was thick, sweet, and mushy.
Honey cookies: just okay, not much flavor
Japanese cheesecake: Fluffy, light, moist. Not bad but mushy on the bottom.
Mien Bao House is in a busy shopping area. Parking could be difficult. They also had lots of deals, including a free Japanese cheesecake with a purchase of $20 or more. Prices are very reasonable.
3 out of 5 stars

Look i know your requests are closed for now. But whenever you can. Could i have fave foods, food preferences, and dislikes for mk characters?
Maybe the basic roster? Liu kang, kung lao, sonya, jax, kano, johnny cage, sub zero(s),scorpion, raiden, kitana, and shang tsung? Maybe a reptile thrown in there.
Ok this might be long but I'll try!
Mortal kombat characters and their food preferences.
Tumblr media
Liu kang:
He likes bold flavors, spices and savory dishes are his go to. He likes dry heat but not so much he can't taste anything. He also likes sweet fruits like peaches and mangoes. He likes mango flavored shaved ice
Kung lao:
He mostly eats vegetables, fresh and delicious with noodles is his go to. But he does rarely eat chicken (don't tell his white lotus masters) and on very special holidays he eats pork (again, don't tell his white lotus masters.) He adores soup dumplings and thats his favorite.
Sonya:
It might be typical, but she loves a nice juicy classic all American burger, fresh off the grill. Other than that she drinks a lot of coffee and prefers light and quick easy meals to get her through the day.
Jax:
The man is simple, he loves a good barbecue pulled pork. Anything high in protein that's also delicious. He also loves strawberry ice cream.
Kano:
Barbeque, beer, and mochi. Surprising to some, kano has a varied palette. While he can eat anything (had to at some points) he also knows whats delicious and whats mediocre at best.
Johnny cage:
The most well coordinated diet you expect from a well active celebrity. But Johnny prefers homemade and authentic food, which often he goes to any obscure family owned ethnic restaurant. His favorite is one noodle dish from a restuarant owned by a very old Chinese man who taught him how to make it, after Johnny practically begged on his knees to know.
Sub-zero/kuai liang:
Kuai is simple, rice and vegetables with beef. But his absolute favorite is ice cream, his eyes light up whenever he sees the delicious frozen treats.
Sub-zero/bi-han:
Bi-han has similar tastes to kuai. But prefers his meats to be burnt to a charcoal. Loves chocolate ice cream.
Scorpion/hanzo hasashi:
Hearty, warm, homemade dishes. Lots of fish, lots of rice. He likes spicy but prefers to be in the mood to fully enjoy it. Likes citrusy desserts.
Raiden:
He loves spice an abnormal amount. Giving him spicy chicken is the quickest way to earn his favor. He also loves milk too. Even his brother is unnerved by how much spicy food raiden can eat and not suffer tremendously, he's just built different. He likes lightly sweet desserts like marshmallows or cotton candy. Or dango.
Kitana:
Edenian dishes are as colorful as delicious and varied. Herbs and spices are used generously and most are vegetarian. Kitana's favorite is an edenian dish with an outworld goat meat marinated in a special edenian orange. Peaches do not exist in outworld but kitana loved the white peach liu kang once offered her. She longs for it's taste again.
Shang tsung:
He loves vegetables, fresh and well prepared. Noodles and broth must also be to his liking. There is one dish that will make him feel so content and at peace, it's a simple peasant dish from a long time ago in china. Shang tsung also loves fruits that are especially juicy and sweet, or tangy. Loves lychee and mango the most.
Bonus reptile/syzoth:
Saurian's diet consists of fish and special leafy greens no longer found in outworld as the plantlife went extinct (thanks shao kahn). But a similar dish is catfish and collared greens.

Part of my reason for being T4T is literally because cis people are so often incredibly boring. Like even the gay ones. I made out with a bear at the club once and then I found out he never watched anything but Grey’s Anatomy and despite being part of a “bears that can cook” Facebook group, had never made a vegetarian recipe in his life. Once went on a date with a cis gay man who promised he’d cook me authentic Chinese food (since he was Chinese and my white, Irish-Australian arse didn’t grow up with much culinary diversity) and then made me frozen dumplings and complained about “welfare queens” the whole night. The last trans woman I fell for spent 20 minutes showing me pictures of her 1978 Corvette that she kitted with a 1978 street directory and an early 70s picnic basket. So.

Brainstorming random general Junkrat headcanons that i consider as an official canon at this point
I wrote this at 4 am cough
- mother issues, and not in the kinky way but like really bad espresso depresso mother issues. He's like a newborn duck who thinks that anything that comes near to him is his mother (also based of his voice lines i think he was an only child and probably lived only with his mom)
- he doesn't care about what he's wearing, dress, pants, skirts, like he's able to walk around in anything that isn't tight or scratchy
- he sees Roadhog as his father figure/older brother and they just kinda adopted each other without the paperwork (ALSO pls don't take this like I'm trying to shittalk on ppl who ship them, this is just my personal view on their relationship so pls don't yell at me or I'm gonna cry ;-;)
- you can't tell me that my boy doesn't have adhd and ptsd, like C'mon
- he's on aro/ace spectrum, he spend his entire life in wasteland so he's rather looking for family and friends than partner, at least not just a quick flirting etc.
- but I can also see him that something like a personal space doesn't exist for him (he's extremely hungry for any physical touch like someone hug him already holy hell) i feel like he doesn't really understand social interactions (kinnie moment) . Idk how to describe it but like imagine he would randomly walk to you and gave you flowers or smth, just trying to be friendly not realizing smn could interpret it differently
- but also he has no idea what flirting is, like u could hit on him for months and he would be for the entire time like :) 🧍‍♀️"love ya too mate" while patting your head
- he actually can draw pretty well, like the concepts he drew for his bombs etc? He has such a clean lineart holy shit
- hardcore/trash punk and kpop/classic 2000s pop, nothing else.
- literally the biggest fan boy (a little meow meow u can say), Lucio? listens to his music non-stop, Hammond? has his stuffed animals and signed peg leg, Junker Queen? gosh, if he doesn't have at least one lunch box with her, I'm throwing hands than
- the pokémon sodas edition, he would love them, cherishem them, worship them, like if he loves pachimari u can't tell me he wouldn't love strawberry yagult pink soda with Mew on the can
- he's losing his hearing so he uses hearing aids (that he made himself ofc), also him and roadhog know sign language and using it pretty oftenly, during missions, when Junkrat's having a panic attack etc.
- so like ppl say he's egoistic but i think there's a huge difference between his ego and Junker Queens ego, she's very confident and sure about her role/look/skill etc. While Junkrat is more self-ironic and tries to hide that he is actually pretty insecure about pretty much everything
- can speak fluently many languages which always throws everyone off , like he just randomly starts speaking Chinese fluently in a middle of meeting or something, and everyone arevlooking at him like 🧍‍♀️
- shitty phantom pains, he may know how to build his prosthetics from a literal garbage but has no idea when it comes to take care of himself so he just curles up into a ball and sobbs
- he and Roadhog give each other manicures at least once a month, that's the only thing he can actually take care of
- unhealthy addiction to coffee and sweets (someone should take away the coffee machine he has in the workshop) (his teeth are rotten at this point)
- his sleep is more broken than the queuing system (haha funny), usually sleeping like 3 hours per day, that's why the coffee addiction
- if u would show him any kind of love he would start stuttering while trying to come up with smth funny, blushing, sweating and sit on the ground and think about life for the next 30 mins cuz of how much he's not used to being praised
- also my man is a huge emotional wreck, he's getting new emotion every 5 seconds
- honestly i can't decide if the only thing he ever read was a recipe on frozen dumplings or if he's the biggest nerd u can imagine who's walking around with Franz Kafka or Sigmund Freud while sipping his boba tea
- he's missing an eye - I read the theory that he doesn't have an eye and that his fake eye is actually the real treasure with a code or smth, and omg, im obsessed, yes, my boy is like a cool mad max pirate, absolutely canon, at least it would connect him to some actual lore in the story, he's just wobbling around for last 6 years just give him something already;-;
- he likes comics, i just think he likes to inconspicuously steal a new issue of Batman whenever they're pulling a heist
- you know those French toasts that are basically just normal bread soaked in condensed milk? that's his ass

Lunar New Year Festival
Throughout the week, there was a noticeable buzz in the air of Central Park--not just of rumors and excitement, but of magic itself. One night, a large troupe of beautiful young women dressed in red and black hanfu gracefully flit throughout the large space carrying a variety of decorations and furnishings while a handful of others quickly and expertly cleaned the entire space of litter and rubbish. They carefully marked off the ice sculptures the Norse goddess had previously made; some were moved to other locations to be admired while others were highlighted in their own showcase. Snow sculptures crafted by residents were also carefully relocated to safe places with high visibility so they could continue to be enjoyed by everyone.
Another handful of ladies floated toward a small clearing, carrying several traditional instruments and began to play some lively tunes for the workers to enjoy as they continued to set up, some of the fairies even dancing and singing along as they placed decorations. These musicians would frequently be seen (and heard!) throughout the duration of the week-long festival as well, providing plenty of live entertainment for attendees--as well as accompaniment for professional dancers who performed a variety of dances. Several new sculptures were brought in--angled archways along the entrances to the park, decked with Spring couplets and Fu characters; several very large and expertly crafted dragons of exquisite detail--one dragon for each pantheon: Chinese, Norse, Japanese, Egyptian, Mayan, Greek, and Celtic dragons all--and despite translucent and frozen, the fierce beasts appeared as though they could come to life at any moment to breath a snow storm into existence.
Quickly, the area continued to be decked with banners and signs of crimson paper, adorning messages in a variety of languages, written in bold characters illuminated by magical golden ink shimmering phrases alternating between Happy New Year--2024--Year of the Dragon and variations thereof. Enchanted string lights of crimson and clear in the shapes of hanging lanterns joined in the decor; each lantern's glow also enchanted to provide warmth to the space so those in attendance could enjoy the outdoor festivities comfortably while the park was bathed in the light of a perpetual sunrise regardless of time of day.
Despite the ice and snow still present, one could easily find many blossoming peach, plum, and sakura trees as well as a variety of peony arrangements and even some strategically-placed potted kumquat and tangerine trees with small signs tied around their base for patrons to help themselves to their fruits as it seemed that no matter how many one picked, they always seemed to grow right back! And the fruits themselves were juicy and delicious!
The pleasant smells of flowers and citrus blended even more with the delicious aromas from the various food stalls that would be open from lunch until midnight. Festival goers could partake in an assortment of street foods from classic jiaozi dumplings, steamed bao (with a variety of fillings, with vegetarian options!) as well as special rou jia mo containing steamed catfish and vegetables for a surplus of good fortune in the new year, chuan’r and char siu, longevity noodles, candied hawthorn, popped lotus seeds, bakkwa, roasted peanuts and chestnuts as well as dried shrimp crisps for snacking, tangyuan, fried battered shrimp (for happiness and laughter!), niangao with special fillings ranging from lychee and longan (because how could one NOT have longan in the year of the dragon!?) to persimmon and kumquat, and much much more! And of course beverages were available at the Spilled Tea stall!
In the northern section of the park, a large tunnel had been erected--two large walls of ice with the "fu" character carved along the surface in intricate patterns. Along the top, however, rows upon rows of scarlet lanterns swayed for an enchanting and fantastical display; certainly a beautiful fixture--some may interpret it as magical and inspiring, some may see it as delightfully romantic. Nearby, another long wall stood beside a stall containing red many "fu" talismans; the young woman at this stall would gladly explain to those curious about how to make wishes and prayers on these cards and hang them on the wall to bring about good fortune for the year ahead. This same young woman happily provided guests with enamel pins in the shape of dragons from their respective pantheons. This nice and helpful young lady was also happy to provide attendees with pamphlets containing a map of the different vendors as well as schedules regarding specific performances and activities.
In the southern area of the park, many pillars of varying heights had been set up, wrapped with red and gold ribbons and adorned with more insignia plaques in preparation of the lion's dance to be performed each evening at sundown. In fact, at other times of the day, one might even catch a glimpse of the dancers wandering around in costume--2 lions!--wordlessly and playfully interacting with festival goers (especially children) and obliging selfie-takers. Many vendors could be found dotted throughout the park--a pleasant blend of traditional preparations heightened by magic. One vendor carved custom stone stencils for stamps of varying sizes--from personalized letter signatures to others the size of plates, demonstrating how to use them for those interested in watching that traditional printing style. Another vendor created malt candies in a variety of shapes and characters ranging from dragons to the "fu" character to moons and stars and so much more, much to the delight of children who enjoyed watching him create edible art.
Other activities included a variety of games located near the pavilion that had been erected in the center of the park--a beautiful and majestic structure of ice, trees, and flowers, adorned further with magnificent paper lanterns that swung gently with a light breeze. Of course, this was where the musicians and dancers performed at varying times of day regardless of the size of their audience. If one looked close enough at these lanterns, however, they would find small cards attached to them with riddles to solve--like a scavenger hunt leading them to another lantern hidden somewhere in the park--a fun little game thought of by the owner of Galaxy Games, wherein each lantern at the starter pavilion had a different set of clues and thus, a different adventure each time, ultimately leading to a variety of prizes--some were silly plushies and candies or vouchers for meals or services at different businesses throughout the island, some may find red envelopes containing money, others might find Felix Durant himself at the end who would provide them with a lucky charm granting them optimal good fortune in whatever they did for the next eight hours.
There was, of course, the classics--the arrow toss, archery contests, live portraits, constructing paper lanterns, using silk cords to make braided cords or other intricate designs, an elderly man telling stories with shadow puppets, and a few fellows wandered about performing fantastical tricks with Chinese yo-yos.
Another activity was the "Dragon Battle" on the west end of the park--which was really just a fun snowball fight for all ages, a battle that never seemed to formally end, surrounding a massive space filled with 'forts' made of ice and snow.
The classic dragon dance took place each night at 8:00 sharp and one could follow the illuminated beast's and its dancers' course throughout the entire park as it chased after the glowing golden orb.
Of course, this would all culminate on the evening of February 10th with a magnificent fireworks display brightening the sky with flurries of color and enchanted images including pixius, qilins, each creature in the zodiac (especially the dragon!), a variety of flowers including lotus blossoms, peonies, chrysanthemums, peach blossoms, and so much more all set to energetic music by live musicians.

[ID: A bowl filled with a light orange-brown broth, several leaves of cooked bok choy, and four dumplings. End ID.]
Vegan Chinese wonton soup
Savory, tangy 'pork' and cabbage wontons are combined with a well-spiced, warming broth in this classic soup. Noodles and bok choy or other leafy greens may be added to create a complete meal. Best of all, the wontons can be made ahead and pulled out whenever you need a quick meal option.
Recipe under the cut!
Patreon | Tip jar
The wontons from this recipe can be made ahead in bulk and then frozen to add to soup a few at a time. This recipe makes about 15 dumplings (enough for 4 to 6 servings of soup) and enough broth for 2 servings of soup; if you're making the dumplings to serve all at once to a large group, double or triple the broth recipe.
To make the wontons:
Makes about 15 (serves 4-6).
INGREDIENTS:
For the dough:
1 cup (120g) all-purpose or bread flour
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 Tbsp vegetable oil
about 1/4 cup water
For the filling:
.2 lb (90g) vegan ‘pork’ sausage or ground pork substitute
OR 1/2 cup (45g) TVP + 1/2 cup (118mL) vegetarian ‘beef’ stock from concentrate
1/2lb (6 leaves) green cabbage, blanched and minced
1 small yellow onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, diced
3 dried red chili peppers, crushed, or 1 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
3 Tbsp neutral oil
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp white peppercorns, toasted and ground
Pinch ground cloves
Greens of 2 scallions, sliced thinly (reserve whites for the broth)
1 tsp light brown sugar
1/2 tsp sesame oil
1 tsp vegetarian oyster sauce, or soy sauce
1/2 Tbsp Shaoxing wine (or substitute with a mixture of mirin and apple cider vinegar)
INSTRUCTIONS:
For the dough:
1. Whisk flour and salt together in a medium mixing bowl. Add vegetable oil and mix until combined.
2. Add water, a little bit at a time, until the dough just comes together into a lumpy mass. You may need more or less than 1/4 cup. Avoid making the dough too smooth or wet, which may cause your wrappers to stick later.
3. Knead for about 5 minutes to create structure. Your dough should still not be perfectly smooth at this point.
4. Return dough to the bowl and cover with a kitchen towel. Allow to rest for at least half an hour while you prepare your filling.
For the filling:
1. To make our ground pork substitute, we're going to either grind a premade vegan pork product in a food processor until smooth, or hydrate some TVP. I hydrated my TVP in a stock made from Vietnamese vegetarian 'beef' broth concentrate (gia vị nấu phở) from Por Kwan brand, but some Western grocery stores also carry a vegetarian beef broth concentrate. If you don't have any, use vegetable broth and 2 tsp of dark soy sauce or vegetarian oyster sauce. Soak TVP in warm broth for 10 minutes until hydrated and soft.
2. Meanwhile, prepare the rest of your ingredients. Blanch cabbage leaves in a few inches of boiling water for a minute or two until vibrantly green; remove and dry thoroughly before mincing or shredding. Crush dried red peppers to a fine consistency.
3. Heat several Tbsp of a neutral oil in a large pan on medium high. Add onion and 1/4 tsp salt and sauté until onion is browned, 3-5 minutes. Push off to the side.
4. Add sausage to the center of the pan and sauté several minutes until browned.
5. Add garlic, crushed red chili, and spices (peppercorns and cloves). Sauté until fragrant.
6. Add cabbage and reduce heat to medium low. Cook for 10-15min until cabbage is very tender.
7. Add brown sugar, sesame oil, soy sauce, and Shaoxing wine and stir to combine. Stir in scallions. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
Tumblr media
To make the wrappers:
1. Divide dough into halves and cover the one you're not working with. On a cornstarch-dusted surface, roll out half of the dough into a rectangle about 12" x 8" (30 x 20cm). Use a sharp knife to cut out six squares about 4" (10cm) wide. Place any scraps back into the covered bowl to rest.
2. Dust each wrapper on both sides with a bit of cornstarch and set aside on a covered plate. The wrappers should be able to be stacked on top of each other without sticking.
3. Repeat with the other half of dough. Allow scraps to rest before rolling them out again--they will probably be able to make another few wrappers.
You may also use a pasta machine to roll out your dough--roll it out so that it is as thin as possible without becoming translucent.
To assemble:
There are various methods of folding wontons--feel free to use whatever you're familiar or comfortable with. This method of folding produces a wonton with plenty of nice "pockets" for the broth to collect in!
1. Place about a tablespoon of filling in the center of a wrapper. Wet the edges of the wrapper and fold it, away from you, in half along the diagonal to produce a triangle.
2. Pull the two farthest points of the triangle together, so that one crosses over the other, and press to seal. If necessary, add a bit of water to the spot where they join to seal firmly.
Tumblr media
3. Set formed wontons aside on a plate lined with parchment paper and cover to avoid drying out. Repeat until your wrappers or filling run out, making sure that wontons are not touching each other as you set them aside.
Extra wontons may be frozen in a container lined with parchment paper. Make sure that they are not touching each other, and also use parchment paper between successive layers of wontons. Allow to freeze until solid--at this point they may be transferred to a smaller container or to a freezer bag, since they will no longer stick together if they touch.
To make the broth:
Makes about 2 cups of broth (serves 2).
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups stock from vegetarian 'chicken' stock concentrate, or vegetable stock + 1 tsp soy sauce
1 cm chunk (3g) ginger, sliced
2 cloves garlic, crushed
Green of 1 scallion, thinly sliced, for garnish
Whites of 3 scallions
1 tsp sesame oil
1/4 tsp white pepper, or to taste
Salt to taste
Instructions:
1. Heat stock, ginger, garlic, and scallions in a small pot until boiling. Reduce heat to low and simmer 15 minutes.
2. Remove from heat and remove ginger, garlic, and scallions. Stir in sesame oil and white pepper. Taste and adjust salt and spices.
To assemble the soup:
1. Cook wontons for five minutes in just-simmering water until floating, tender, and slightly translucent. Remove into serving bowls.
2. Optional: blanch some bok choy, spinach, or another leafy green for a minute or two until tender. Boil noodles of your choice according to package directions. Drain and add to serving bowls along with the wontons.
3. Divide broth between serving bowls and top with scallion. Serve warm.

@galauvant happy new year!! may it bring you many ready-to-eat snacks and ingredients for thai home cooking
here's a little shopping list of some things i recommend getting if you go there:
oishi green tea kyoho grape with nata de coco: the first time i saw people drink this mid-romantic scene in a thai bl it was a bit jarring, but that was only because i hadn't tried it before. it's so lovely; i could write sonnets about it.
golden mountain seasoning sauce: you can get it elsewhere but they sell a liter of it for like $5, which is very worth it if you make garlic noodles or any thai stir fries regularly
dragonfly brand black soy sauce: for pad see ew! (the one with the orange cap. if you don't anticipate using it much, honestly you could probably up the soy sauce/add chinese black soy sauce and add a very small amount of molasses?)
ABC brand sweet soy sauce: a common malay and indonesian condiment. this is way too sweet for me but i had a roommate who put it on everything and felt like i should mention that they sell it!
big bags of glutinous rice for way less than you'd pay anywhere else
BAMBOO CONE STEAMER (หวด). THIS WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE IF YOU LIKE STICKY RICE. it's like $6 if you have a pot that it will fit in, and still under $20 if you need to buy a pot to go with it. it is impossible to mess up sticky rice using this method. there is literally zero measuring required and it gives the rice such a nice fragrance. i've been able to make mango sticky rice on a whim every time i've seen a good deal on good mangoes the last couple of years and this is why. here is a video on how to make sticky rice with it! and here is a mango sticky rice recipe i use as a template. for 1 cup uncooked sticky rice i use one 8.5oz carton of aroy d coconut milk to ½ cup sugar and 1 tsp salt, then reserve a scant ½ cup of the dissolved coconut milk mixture for the sauce. (cornstarch works as a thickener if you don't have rice flour!)
frozen khanom thien (ขนมเทียน) there's a similar lao dessert called kanom nap, and a burmese dessert called mok phet thot. it's a steamed glutinous rice dumpling wrapped in banana leaves and filled with a caramelized shredded coconut/palm sugar filling! here are a handful of videos of people making it!
butterfly pea flowers: not cheap but i think still cheaper than i've seen them elsewhere?? relatedly! there is a thai restaurant on the UES that sells chor muang (ช่อม่วง). I think it was Thep on 75th and 2nd?? They're beautiful, interesting, and a pain to make, and I've never seen them on another restaurant menu.
frozen pandan leaves: not sure where else i would get them in nyc, although pretty much any SE asian grocery store will carry them.
makrut lime leaves: sometimes sold frozen, sometimes in a little ziploc bag in the refrigerated section. *girl scout cookie sales voice* they freeze well!
frozen galangal slices
fun lays flavors
nam prik pao (นำ้พริกเผา): if you don't eat shrimp, there's one vegetarian brand that uses dried shiitake mushroom for the savory element (Chua Hah Seng vegetarian chilli paste - นำ้พริกเผาฉั่วฮะเส็ง มังสวิรัติ)
palm sugar: available elsewhere, but usually more expensive
fresh/frozen coconut milk: worth trying at least once! it's also worth getting one or two shelf-stable cartons of coconut milk if you've only had canned before, but their prices aren't great—i usually get the 6- or 12-packs of 8.5 oz cartons of aroy d on amazon
they sell a little frozen tom yum veggie set with lemongrass, galangal, and lime leaves, which is nice if you're only planning to make it once or twice
sundried bananas (กล้วยตาก): they don't always carry these. sometimes they're vacuum packed; sometimes they have them in a little plastic clamshell container
If you're cooking for a vegetarian or someone with a shellfish allergy and looking at savory items, note that there are two words that get translated as "vegetarian," which are used somewhat interchangeably but strictly speaking mean different things—'je' (เจ) and 'mangsawirat' (มังสวิรัติ). เจ/je doesn't include onions, garlic and certain other vegetables. If you see something labeled as vegetarian curry paste, you'll want to check whether they just mean no shrimp paste, or no shrimp paste/garlic/shallots!! Items labeled as มังสวิรัติ/mangsawirat will not contain meat, shellfish, fish, or fish sauce, but can contain allium.

Nice things!
Just got home a bit ago after doing my lunar new year shopping, I'm glad I didn't bother trying yesterday and then being rushed because of all the other errands because like while I had a general list of food ideas, I was also improving as I went based on what was there. There was tons of fruits front and center!! I got tangerines, a pomello, persimmons, and some little lady apples, some other snacking foods and a dried fruit tray, lotssss of veggies and mushrooms, also some tofu and quail eggs because I decided I'm gonna do a hotpot, since I conveniently had bought that single burner for my own use I was like huh. This is very convenient. AND they had a really great price on a big great quality stainless steel divided pot, like I was just gonna use whatever but I was like OH!!! I put aside some of my Christmas money SPECIFICALLY for this party and decorations were almost cleaned out aside from a couple things I grabbed so it was like well spend the rest on this pot and then I have it forever for my own future kitchen ;0; ♡ so I got a spicy broth and miso for the other, and all that is gonna be vegetarian since my brother is vegetarian and also has a shellfish allergy, decided to avoid any seafood, and I know my friends love veggies and stuff anyway! And then I got some uhh frozen buns, pancakes, spring rolls, and dumplings (one veggies one chicken so that's the one meat item), I'm gonna like kinda cook things as I go? It's a lot of people but idk how much everyone is actually gonna be hungry but everything I bought is also stuff I like to eat so it kinda doubles as a shopping trip for myself anyway like even if I have tons of frozen stuff left that's just food stocked up for me! We have plenty of soda and water in the house, so I just got like solo cups and paper plates from the dollar store (and some red steamers to tie the decor I could get together)
A lot of the typical LNY foods were on sale also! And it was busy ahaha like everyone was in there loading up on all the same kinds of things! I felt bad when I was checking out cause I was confusing the cashier a bit with my like multiple forms of payment I needed to use (food has to go on one card, the rest I wanted to do part cash part debit but was unable to communicate that so I just put it all on debit which is nbd I'll just deposit the cash in the bank later) ;;;; since I don't know Chinese and she didn't know English it took a little bit of gesturing and her typing numbers on her phone for me to read orz I felt like anxious after I was finishing boxing my stuff I was like oh I hope I didn't stress her too much she's obviously so busy today and there's a line behind me (that "everyone in the grocery store hates me" feeling snjfmsnfns) but right before I left she grabbed a pack of pretty red cards from under the register and held them up so I can see and then put them in my box 😭❤
(The struggle is so on me though like usually when I'm there the cashiers are some amount of bilingual but I can't always expect it, and I do usually need to use multiple forms of payment so I should really try learning some words and phrases so make it easier ;;; hopefully she knew I was very thankful to her though! That really made my day 🥺)
Anyway yeah that was my trip so! I'm excited, tomorrow I'll likely start prepping things like cutting veggies and stuff. On the day of, I'll take photos of everything to share! Last year I was solo and my family had some decor up to welcome me back from Oregon but it wasn't a whole party or anything, so I'm excited to host a proper gathering (and have friends with me instead of being alone and sad)
