call me regulation-loving Eurotrash but this shit should be fucking illegal
Tumblr media
you are driving a thousand kilogram death machine. you need your eyes on the fucking road at all times because lives are at stake. literally, overcomplicated radio displays are known to distract drivers and reduce awareness, and then there’s this bullshit?
you need the absolute minimum information possible. speed, fuel, rpm, engine warnings. not fucking, calendar, weather and world clock.
sttg the longer i look at this image the worse it gets. that’s the NEWS app on the touchscreen there? you want people to look down and read the paper while driving? and literally not one of the widgets on the top screen needs to be there, read your calendar and the weather and the air quality index before you leave the house godsabove. even that map is overcomplicated, no you do not need 3D renders of every building in front of you that you can SEE with your EYES. fuck it you don’t even need a mega-complicated media display, prepare your bloody playlists and podcasts before you hit the road and you can switch between them like an iPod shuffle. and get rid of Chainsmokers - Riptide ffs.

honestly, the sheer rage most other Americans experience when I tell them we used to have VASTLY more public transit in this country than we do now gives me hope for the future

If Amtrak was as great as it used to be today I could be happy but not like this
Side note. Instead of "cog in the wheel" we should start saying "car on the highway". For funsies

coping @sour-sorrel's tags to a new post because...yes. All of this.
A fun thing to do, that I strongly encourage particularly americans to do in order to see land use, is get on google earth and look at an aerial view of towns and cities etc.
Non-Americans sit in with us here in this post, I'm curious what y'all will think about this
Tumblr media
screenshot from Elizabethtown Kentucky (not where i live, but a random town in my state)
as you can see, suburbs take up a lot of space, but it's the businesses that are flagrantly wasting land.
the parking lots, and the buildings themselves, take up So Much Space, and a lot of it is empty. The ROADS take up so much space. the big building with the white roof at center left is a Walmart. At least the suburbs have some vegetation.
Tumblr media
And they're surrounded by dead space like this, mowed grass that is not being used
Tumblr media
The outskirts of the Walmart are similarly empty grass that is maintained by mowing despite the fact that it's a drainage ditch and excess land
Tumblr media
(This is looking straight down the right hand side of the screenshot from the end of the road with the little sidewalk coming off it, not across)
Bonus trivia question: How accessible is that Walmart (almost certainly the nearest place to buy food) from nearby suburbs?
Tumblr media
As the crow flies, this is 3,800 feet, or a little over 1.1 kilometers
Tumblr media
It takes 33 minutes to walk. Not too bad if you're in good shape and only picking up a couple things. There are sidewalks, and the road crossings don't look too dangerous.
Tumblr media
In the summer, however, this would be miserable, since it is treeless grass with heat boiling up off the pavement. In July and August, the average July and August temperatures in Elizabethtown are 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees celsius) but in Kentucky it regularly goes up to 95, which is gonna be a yikes from me.

Since y'all liked that post about Tesla removing the gear selectors in their cars, did you also know that Elon Musk is promising v12.0 of Autopilot Full Self Driving will be "much better" than previous versions. He's claiming it will be the first version without the "Beta" label and will be basically as good or better than a human driver. To show this off, he took to Twitter Live and streamed a 45-minute drive from Twitter HQ to Mark Zuckerburg's house. Live doxxing aside, the best part of this live stream was
A: When the vehicle came to a stop at a red light, waited a few seconds, and then attempted to run the red light while traffic was actively going through the intersection, causing Musk to slam on the brakes and deactivate the system.
B: When the vehicle got caught in a Yellow Light and was taking way longer than necessary to stop, prompting a verbal "I hope it stops," panic from Musk.
Full Self Driving my ass.

Men will be like "I need my seven-foot-tall six-wheeled pickup truck with a twenty-foot cabin, eight trillion-lumen headlamps and a cow catcher. For work reasons" then you look at the bed and it has the square footage of a saltine cracker

So, as everyone knows, Walt Disney loved trains. He loved them so much he built a mini ridable train in his backyard and excitedly showed it to everyone that came over to his house. He made sure that in the theme parks, especially his futuristic utopia of EPCOT, the main way of getting around had to be trains. So, with this in mind,
WHY THE FUCK DIDNT DISNEY LOBBY THE US GOVERNMENT INTO HAVING A BETTER TRAIN SYSTEM!!!!?!???!?!!! The Federal-Aid Highway Act, arguably the start of today's god awful car and highway dependency, was passed in 1956. Walt died in 1966 (lung cancer cause he smoked a ton). This man had tons of influence over the country, having a fucking tv show where he addressed the audience and encouraged everyone watching to call him "Uncle Walt". He absolutely couldve used that social influence and played up his futurist idealism on that show or any other method of addressing the public to say HEY, CARS KINDA SUCK ACTUALLY, BUT YOU KNOW WHAT DOESNT SUCK? MOTHAFUCKIN TRAINS!!!!!!!!!
Buuuuuut no, he had to be so involved with the theme parks, only really caring about creating a "futuristic society of tomorrow" when it was for his little company town idea.
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Sometimes you'll meet a Fae, and it won't look like it's supposed. It'll be broken looking, missing pieces like shattered glass, deformed and distorted features to the point where they're twisted and uncanny, discolored body, erratic or dangerous behavior, sometimes even so distorted it looks more like an eldrich horror then a creature of the Fae courts.
These Fae have lost their lands. Great desert spirits whose dunes have been turned into golf courses. Creatures of forests and fields whose lands have been overtaken by malls and parking lots. Protectors of cities and towns whose communities and natural ecosystems have been replaced by highways and lawns. These creatures are in pain because the very places they were part of are dead. They lost something so fundamental to them that they can't heal without it.
The people who made the world this way will complain that the Fae react naturally to what happened. But what else do they expect? This is the world they made. They'll try to solve this problem with iron bullets, but this isn't a Fae breaking its rules so it's just not going to work that way.
When you're working to heal these types of Fae you're working to heal the land. And that will take time. That monstrosity made of plastic and concreate isn't going to return to being a forest spirit the momment you plant a tree where that mall and that parking lot was, that wandering horror isn't going to switch back into being a town guardian the momment you sign a bike lane into law, you have to make space for them and give them time to heal, and then mabye you'll be making space for humans too.
