What Weight Loss Journey Really Looks Like? The social media and advertising everywhere tells you how easy to lose 10 pounds or even 20lbs in a week, 2 weeks or a month, right? The diet culture also hypnotize us to think that anytime you need to lose a few pounds, simply cutting back on calories to maintain a calorie deficit, the extra body fat will melt away like butter on a hot plate. Nope... The reality is most people, especially women don't lose weight like that. Calorie deficit and starvation model assumes the human body is like a bucket pour in pour out. The human body is a very complicated biochemical machine driver by hormones, biology and psychological factors. Most people give up on their weight loss effort too early too soon because they have a distorted expectations. They think their weight will plummet at the start of the starvation diet like they see in social media and advertising. But the reality is that their weight may fluctuate a while before actual weight loss happen. However, most people would have given up before the weight loss start, which would be 1-2 months. Instead of focusing on the number on the scale, focus on your mood and energy level. Because these are what will carry you through the rest of the weight loss journey. Chasing an external factor will never bring your satisfaction and happiness. Weight loss is a healing process for the body, mind and soul that takes time and patience. First of all, are you really hungry? Or are you having a bad day? Hunger can be trigger by either psychological stress or physiological needs. Psychologically, stress, anxiety, feeling lonely, depressed, and angry can be huge triggers for binge eating even though you're not hungry. And physiologically, hunger may be triggered by poor digestion, and/or a diet loaded with ultra-processed foods that are empty calories. Binge eating when stress makes you feel good while you're binge eating but left you feeling more depressed and upset after the fact. Instead, Go for a walk Talk to someone Do some yoga Take a bath or shower Go for a swim Sing Dance Journal Meditate And scream, if you really want. Doing any of these will increase your dopamine, endorphins, serotonin and oxytocin to make you feel better without calories and dangerous food chemicals. How do I know if I ate Too Much? We are born intuitive eaters. This is why it's so easy for babies to eat when they're hungry and stop when they're full. But as we get older, many of us lose touch with our hunger and fullness from years of mindless eating based on external rules rather than internal cues. A tool that is very helpful to re-connect you with your internal body cues is the hunger and fullness scale. The hunger fullness scale translates your hunger and fullness sensation on a visual scale of 1 to 10. "1" being starving/ravenous "hangry" state, and "10" being stuffed to the point of feeling sick. When you start feeling hungry and thoughts of food started appearing (a "3"), it's a good time to start deciding on what to eat. This is when you are still capable of making sound, healthy choices for your body. Then eat slowly until you're comfortably full or not hungry anymore (between a "5" or a "6"). We want to feel nourished, energized, and satiated, not stuffed. Before you start eating, ask yourself if you're physically hungry. If not, what is your feeling at that moment, and why you're feeling that way. Emotional or stress eating is a learned behavior that can be unlearned, but it starts with recognizing it. Learning to eat mindfully will help you achieve that. Eating is Complicated Eating is physiological, psychological, social, and cultural. Advising people to simply eat less and exercising more to lose weight is just naive and ignorant. And that's exactly what I've been taught to do in nutrition school. But I'm now smarter and more informed because I've seen patients after patients failed to lose weight with the conventional nutrition advice because we're not addressing their individual biology, psychological needs, social situations, and cultural influence. Saw this new patient today. She and her husband did the "keto" diet last month before coming to see me because she tried everything and nothing works. She said she lost 4lbs in a month doing the keto diet and her husband lost 10lbs eating the exact same way. She got discouraged because her husband lost 10lbs and she only lost 4lbs. Did you know if she stays on this diet for a year, she'd have lost 52 pounds? So be realistic and stay focus on your results, not other's. PS: the "keto meal plan" she downloaded from the internet was not a real keto diet. It's just a healthy diet with lots of fresh ingredients and no processed foods. That's it. If you've been struggling with weight loss while eating a low-calorie and low-fat diet, it's time to add fat back into your diet. Most people today are still following the low-calorie low-fat diet recommendations from the '80s.
