Michal David’s “Furby A Shelby” (2001): A potential English translation? 😮

Hey Furby fans! If you know of someone who has in fact done this before, please let me know so I can properly credit and reblog/report on it! I did try looking around online for a few days but was unable to turn up anything else on my own.

Some of you may be familiar with the several unofficial-to-official Furby-centric and Furby-inclusive music albums that have been released over the years; some from the USA, some from Europe, and some from Latin America. With a little digging around, you can find much of this music available online, mostly on YouTube and Spotify... but did you know that two of these albums were released exclusively in Czechia? Furby wiki frequenters may already be acquainted with the titles: Cesta Kolem Světa - Music Party (Around the World - Music Party) 2001  and 22 Dětských Hitů (22 Children’s Hits) 2002

Fortunately for us, 22 Children’s Hits can be listened to in its entirely on YouTube here. For Music Party, well... it gets a bit tougher.

On the Furby fandom wiki page for Music Party, there is a single comment from 2018 where a Furby fan bemoans their inability to listen to this album in full. Even when browsing Czech merchant sites in attempts to outright purchase the CD or cassette, it can be difficult to come across. Neither English translated lyrics nor the original Czech lyrics for any of the songs don’t seem to be listed anywhere. The album features several odes to various toys/family entertainment properties. Only a single song from the album is available to listen to online, and I believe it is thanks to the fervor and tenacity of the Furby fandom that it is so. That song is “Furby A Shelby”! You can listen to it in the embedded video below.

So, what about that translation? Hand over the goods, old man. Recently, I have made a friend in Czechia. I was sharing Furby related things with him when he remarked how excited he was to see someone from outside the country who had heard of a Czech musician in any capacity. A bit later, I found myself unable to resist... I asked my friend what it would take to listen to the song and translate the lyrics into English for me, so I could finally know what Furby and Shelby were up to after all these years! Below the readmore is the translation from my friend. He did mention he found himself unable to keep the rhyme scheme intact, but it still paints a clear picture of what the song is about. Please be kind, he did this without being a professional translator, from the generosity of his heart. I hope you enjoy! Thanks for reading!

Black Friday, 1998

"Thank Christ!"

Steve reaches forward, greedily wiggling his knitted glove-covered fingers before Eddie resumes his spot next to him.

He hands Steve's coffee over, an extra shot and three sugars - an indulgence appropriate for the early hour that Eddie willingly bailed almost immediately to go purchase.

"What took you so long?" Steve complains, slurping from the takeaway cup and smacking his lips in satisfaction.

"Every significant other who got dragged out here in this weather is lingering over at that coffee joint across the street," Eddie nods behind them.

He grumbles to himself as a gust of cold, snowy air whips its way through the crowd waiting outside the mall. People gasp and audibly shiver away. Maybe he should have just stayed at home, warm as toast in bed for the morning...

But, as he looks at Steve adjusting his stance so as not to budge an inch from his spot, Eddie thinks he might find himself being broken up with in a wintery Chicago mall parking lot if he so much as suggests potentially going home.

"Fuck, it's freezing," Steve shivers, holding his coffee tight to his chest and hunching his shoulders.

He might be freezing his fine ass off, but Eddie thinks his partner also looks like a cuddly marshmallow in his navy blue puffer jacket, yellow scarf and matching beanie.

"Hey, you're the one who insisted on lining up at the crack of dawn in the freezing cold," Eddie argues, taking a sip from his own over-sugared beverage.

"I'm not paying full price for whatever the hell this thing is!" Steve says, awkwardly fishing in his jeans pocket.

He holds up a crumpled page from the Target Black Friday catalogue. It features a row of Furby's, each differently coloured and all staring back at Eddie with their undead robot eyes.

Joanie has circled a grey, pink-bellied one – her authoritative red marker clearly identifying her choice.

"They're cute," Eddie chuckles, snatching up the page and crumpling it beyond recognition.

"No, they're creepy," Steve says, side-eyeing the catalogue, "I feel like it's gonna come alive and hypnotise us with those unblinking eyes as soon as we bring it home."

"But Munchkin wants one," he coos, wrapping his arm around Steve's very puffed-up arm.

"I know," Steve sighs.

IMPORTANT FURBY ANNOUNCEMENT

I seemingly found an undocumented way to *soft* reset a Furby Boom, which can temporarily fix Shaken Furby Syndrome! Activate the tongue sensor and the pet sensor at the same time, and it will reset into the sleep routine, but *maintain* the current personality data! It doesnt seem to permanently fix Shaken Furby Syndrome, but my furb went from constantly thinking it was being shaken, to barely at all! Super nifty. No idea if thats the actual way to cause it, but it seems to have completely worked. (To clarify, Shaken Furby Syndrome is when a Furby constantly thinks its being shaken. Im not sure which models it affects, but this seems to affect the Furby Boom at the very least.)

There's a prototype Graduation Furby on eBay and there's something very interesting about the manufacturer tag on its ear- it lists a vendor as "Genalex" and the factory code on the bottom is GE

Since most special editions that I've seen come from one specific factory, and JT stands for Jetta, is it possible that GE stands for Genalex??

Do the other factories have similar names???

You know what, I’m just gonna say it. I think that Alastor being aroace is part of the reason he’s so shippable to me.

Before you come at me, check the flag in my pfp; I’m aroace-spec.

Maybe it’s me projecting, maybe it’s because I love exploring relationships through an aroace lens, but goddamn. I ship him more than any other character and every time I do, his aroaceness is a major component in the ship.

We have the pre-canon kinky QPR that I show in UH3. I could talk about that all day, but to summarize:

Aroace x genuinely respectful allo is a dynamic that heals my soul.

Lucifer is less tied down by human constructs like amatonormativity, having never been human himself.

The Devil values consent.

Kinky cannibalism, kinky cannibalism, kinky cannibalism, kinky ca- *I am removed from the stage with a comically large hook*

Then we have the Evil and fucked up QPR dynamic:

And of course, trying to get along for Charlie’s sake and eventually bonding over their shared love of dad jokes and musical theatre, both being violinists (yup, Alastor plays violin too, check the wiki) with niche hobbies/interests (ducks, furby organ) and accidentally winding up in a loving, healthy QPR.

There’s something about an aroace and a sex worker who very rarely falls in love.

Angel would know that Alastor isn’t with him for sex, would know that he values Angel beyond his body.

With greyro Alastor, Angel and Alastor would both be inexperienced with romance, but in wildly different ways. Angel has never had a healthy romantic relationship and therefor tries not to fall in love. Greyro Alastor has probably experienced romantic attraction like less than three times in his 100+ years of existence.

And if Alastor never gains romantic attraction for Angel, that’s a whole other level to the dynamic.

It’s got some great angst potential with Angel wondering if he’s not good enough to love romantically or Alastor feeling guilty or confused as to Why It Hasn’t Happened Yet when he cares for Angel so deeply, and eventually it gets resolved with the two of them accepting that their attractions don’t have to match up for them to love/appreciate/care for each other and they smash the amatonormative relationship hierarchy as queer platonic partners.

Or, Angel’s just totally cool with it from the start because he’s spent decades in the kink scene and has potentially been exposed to more relationship anarchy than Alastor.

Kink and queerness have a great deal of historical and cultural overlap, and that includes aroace queerness. Because Angel’s had way more canon exposure to both, it’s possible he knows more about Alastor’s orientation than Alastor does, and I love the idea of Angel introducing him to terms or just being super chill about not labeling things.

Drawing like 90% from pilot dynamic and headcanon on this. They’re just two old men. They get drunk and cuddle. Alastor is one of the few people who knows Husk can purr and takes advantage of this fact. Alastor considers Husk a friend in a fucked up, possessive way. Husk considers Alastor a pain in the ass, but does care about him on some level.

It’s Fucked Up and Evil QPR: Remix Edition.

And the versions where the author puts them through fanfic couple’s therapy and actually gets them into a healthy point in their relationship? One where Alastor no longer owns Husk’s Soul? *chef’s kiss*

For me, personally, this is an exclusively nonsexual, non-romantic ship. They’re besties; they’re QPPs. They’re married for the tax benefits and so that they cannot be forced to testify against each other in court.

Rosie knew Alastor was aroace before he did and rather than sit down and explain it to him, she decided to make ace puns.

Ok, so this is entirely based on non-canon-compliant Lilith. Or, I guess, non-series-compliant Lilith. More of the old WOG stuff from the pilot era, with a healthy dose of headcanon for flavor.

I love the idea of Lilith and Lucifer having an open marriage; I love the UH3 style polycule dynamic.

Lilith being the original seductress and Alastor being aesthetically but not sexually or romantically attracted to her is very near and dear to my heart.

I’m an aroace with a voice kink who is aesthetically attracted to Lilith and I think Alastor is an aroace with a voice kink who would be aesthetically attracted to Lilith, ok?

I’m gonna be real with you, 90% of my interest in RadioStatic is in the one-sided version where Vox is a pathetic little incel simp and Alastor is either oblivious, mildly annoyed, or finds the whole thing hilarious.

Whenever there’s any reciprocation on Alastor’s part, I always imagine it being in a very aroace, very Alastor-esque way. He needs to be get something out of it completely unrelated to sex/romance. And he needs to be manipulative and sadistic in the process.

Whether that something is kink-related, a business transaction, or simply the quality entertainment provided by Vox being a cringefail TV-headed little bitch, I love to see it.
