deadcanon: history of the devampiros

ok this is unnecessarily long and not very interesting - I've had these thoughts swimming through my head for the past few weeks, and wanted to get them written out. the tl;dr: they are vampire veterans of the century conflict, they fell in love, but then he decided he doesn't want to be a vampire anymore so they're getting divorced.

dillon

Real quick here with the spelling. The gallery model for this dude from the Malpractice household has the name Dillin Derito. I just… can’t, with Dillin. I can’t. My justification here is that Dillin Derito is the stage name he and his publicist agreed on to make him sound more Del Sol. His birth name, Dillon DeVampiro, comes from his mother’s maiden name. It doesn’t sound very Del Sol.

Default traits: Genius, bookworm, romantic

Florencia Dillon was one of the first spellcasters turned during Operation Eternal Flame. Prior to her transformation, she was a virtuoso within the School of Mischief and a close friend of Keisha Hughes. She joined forces with Vlad Straud early in his rise to power and eventually married one of his offspring, Claude DeVampiro. Claude was born mundane and was among the first few who had actually asked to turn. Their son Dillon DeVampiro was born around the time Mooncasters started their experiments.

Dillon’s parents were heavily involved with the early war effort. Florencia, with her understanding of spellcasters, was particularly useful to Vlad. Dillon spent his childhood preparing for war, with everyone from his parents to Vlad himself stepping in to train him.

When Dillon was a teenager, his father was killed by spellcasters. A few decades later, his mother was slain by her old friend Keisha.

Dillon remained with the Straud coven. He had a reputation as a shrewd tactician - his mother taught him all about spellcasters growing up, and that inside knowledge combined with his genius trait led to him doing some real damage.

Default traits: Materialistic, music lover, snob

Gabriel and Eva Nox were tavernkeepers in Glimmerbrook at the start of the Century Conflict, and were turned around the time Operation Eternal Flame started picking up steam. It was a huge blow to morale - the Noxes were well-liked, and their tavern was one of the main social hubs in Glimmerbrook at the time. Beyond that, they weren’t involved with the war effort in any capacity and were still snatched away. No one was safe.

In game terms, when they were human both Gabriel and Eva had the foodie & music lover traits. After their transformations, they also became snobs. They eventually joined the Aria coven, a group of vampires who believed that their immortality and powers were best put towards mastery of the arts.

Around the time werewolves were invented, their daughter Elle was born. Elle had an extensive fine arts education, studying everything from music to poetry as a child. She specialized in violin, and by the time she was a minor vampire she’d developed a reputation as a skilled performer.

The older she got, the more stifled Elle felt by her coven. They were firmly committed to staying entirely out of the war, which frustrated her. She wanted to learn how to use her powers, and she wanted the sort of status only celebrated warriors could achieve. As a musician, she could potentially run in those circles, but she would never actually be part of the upper crust.

Other covens often hired musicians from Aria to perform at social gatherings, with some staying for extended periods of time. After building up her reputation and successfully outmaneuvering her competitors, Elle was awarded a coveted longterm position in Forgotten Hollow as the Straud coven’s resident violinist.

Elle moved to Forgotten Hollow a decade or so after Vlad conquered it, during a period of rapid economic development. Vampires had been steadily accumulating power and wealth and began pouring resources into the area, constructing housing ranging from fine manors to tenements meant to house not only the vampires, but also the human prey they hoped to lure into the town.

Dillon met Elle soon after Vlad hired her, but she was always busy with her violin during social gatherings. At one point he made an offhand comment to Vlad that it was a shame that he never got the chance to dance with her. Vlad, wanting to be a good bro, decided to grease the wheels. At the next gala he had Elle replaced by a different violinist from Aria (with whom Elle had a very catty, contentious relationship). He’s not great with people sometimes.

The other violinist smugly informed Elle that she was being replaced because Dillon didn’t want her to perform. Furious, Elle stormed over to Straud manor to demand an explanation. Dillon, mortified but optimistic that he could salvage the situation, explained what he’d actually said to Vlad and, in the same breath, asked if she would like to attend the gala with him, since her plans for the evening had fallen through. Charmed, Elle accepted. Surprising absolutely no one, they snuck away from the gala at some point for a little alone time. Surprising everyone, they were inseparable after that.

Elle was a prime vampire when she moved to Forgotten Hollow, very close to becoming a master (I’m defining this as - she’d been learning supernatural speed and could kiiinda do it - like she could go fast - but she had no directional control and just bounced off of things or fell over. The way ranks/powers work in-game is so sudden, but I see it as a more gradual transition). Though still mostly focused on her music, she began to train with the rest of the Straud coven, with additional private instruction by Dillon. When he floated the idea of marriage to her, she said she didn’t want that until she was a grand master. She was concerned about her reputation - if they waited until she was fully ranked up, the narrative would be that he’d married a fellow grand master. If they married before that, she worried that no one would notice when she finally did become a grand master, and she would always be seen as his lower-ranked wife. He thought she was probably right about that, and agreed to hold off on a wedding. He did, however, start pushing her much harder in her training.

Soon after Elle mastered her mist form, she and Dillon got married. Many of the most prominent members of the war effort attended the wedding. A group of spellcasters got wind of their plans and decided to stage an attack during the reception. The attack was supremely unsuccessful. Elle and Dillon were a little disappointed they hadn’t have known about it in advance - they could’ve saved a lot on catering. Classy lady that she was, Elle managed to avoid spilling a single drop of blood on her fancy white dress.

As a wedding gift, Elle and Dillon were given a human woman known as Inna Cents to work as their maid, with her main responsibilities involving cleaning and attending to Elle’s wardrobe. I’ll dive into Inna’s backstory in a separate post.

A decade or so after the wedding, Elle’s parents were killed by spellcasters. As hard as they’d tried to avoid the war, it got them in the end. Despite her best efforts, Elle was unable to track down the casters responsible to take her revenge.

The DeVampiros continued to fight at Vlad’s side for the rest of the war. When it was clear that it was over for them, they turned their attention to Operation High Fang, a propaganda campaign meant to win them the battle of public opinion. Elle reconciled with the remnants of the Aria coven. With their cultured upbringings and exposure to human art, they were uniquely qualified to promote the classy image vampires were trying to present.

Life was fairly uneventful after the war. Elle devoted herself to her music. Dillon learned to day walk and attended university a few times, and spent the rest of his time helping Vlad train young vampires and expanding his vast collection of books.

Vlad and Dillon put on a number of plays over the years, just for funsies. They weren’t very good, but they weren’t completely terrible. Elle was unimpressed by supportive - acting was a hobby for him, and you don’t have to be good at hobbies for them to be worthwhile to pursue. She wasn’t thrilled when he decided to hire a publicist in Del Sol to try to get an actual acting career going, but she figured they could make it work. She didn’t realize that this was the start of the vampiric equivalent of a midlife crisis.

Dillon’s publicist told him he could get a job on a new medical drama, Malpractice, if he took the cure, took the name Dillin Derito, and took off his shirt. Dillon suggested that Elle take the cure as well. Elle suggested that he start looking for an attorney, because she was filing for divorce. He did not take her threat seriously. After more than a century and a half spent happily married, he was confident that Elle was just bluffing. She’d learn to like Del Sol.

Though Elle repeatedly told him that their marriage would be over if he became human, Dillon was shocked when she actually had him served. He’s been dragging out the divorce as much as possible in the hopes of convincing her to reconcile. It’s a sad situation. From Dillon’s perspective, Elle is the same as she’s always been. He badly misses his wife and wants her back. From Elle’s perspective, there is a delicious stranger walking around with her husband’s face, and she is mourning the man she lost.

Vlad wasn’t happy about Dillon’s decision but tried to be supportive, believing his bro would return to Forgotten Hollow and turn back after he’d had his fun - if nothing else, because he’d want to go back to Elle. When Elle filed for divorce, Vlad was absolutely furious, thinking she would just push Dillon further away. In retaliation, he kicked her out of the coven. Elle joined up with the Bloodvein coven. Inna, who had grown close to Elle after her own transformation, went with her.

He loves the idea that everyone knows his bond wants him.

He LITERALLY asked if he could eat Oli out on the back of his motorcycle 😭😭 he doesn’t care if it’s in public

I also think he loves when Oli wants to fuck more than one of them at a time. It’s like a competition in his brain.

He wants to be the one to fuck her the best. He wants her to crave him just as he craves her.

I also think it hurt him the most when Oli disappeared. Everyone else already had some type of trauma before that but Gabe didn’t. He literally had a full on break down when he found out she was gone. Plus he was only 14 when it happened.

Gabe didn’t know what it was like NOT to be loved. Everyone loved him so why was it that his bond, the one person who would love him above all else didn’t want him? That broke him.

Atlas

It feels out of character for me that Atlas is covered in tattoos. He comes from a very wealthy family. And he is like indestructible. So I think they were a form of self harm for him.

Like he’s this self assured asshole rich kid that can do or say whatever he wants bc there will never be any consequences. Except he doesn’t think anyone really loves him.

It’s not until he understands what his mother did for him does he understand and she loved him in the only way she could.

When Oli disappeared I think it solidified in his mind that no one would ever really love him. And that’s when I think he found a way to start getting tattoos. And that shit would have to hurt like hell bc, like I said indestructible. So a little needle isn’t gonna do it.

Gryphon

Gryphon fucks. That’s not even a head cannon that’s just fucking cannon.

While I know Gryphon knows Oli doesn’t belong to him, I also know that when he is fucking her he wants her to forget that.

This is a man who asks her who her pussy belongs to and if she answers wrong he makes her regret it.

Also he is into her leaving marks. He wants the rest of the bond group to know just how much she likes fucking him. And he does know bc he can literally read her mind.

Plus I think when she was still living in the dorms, even though he trusted Gabe to walk her home and keep her safe, he sat out in the parking lot or hung out on the first floor with the security guard to keep her safe.

Okay not just to keep her safe he was also so fucking scared she would run away again and he couldn’t live with himself knowing she was out in the world and didn’t want him as much as he wanted her.

North

The reason North is so mean to her when she first got back is because she hurt Nox. Not because she left him. He can deal with people being mean to him, hating him, but his brother doesn’t deserve that no matter how big of an asshole he might be sometimes.

The reason he thinks she’s a gold digger is bc the only women who would look past the monster of his bond were women who wanted his money. Why would his bonded be any different?

The night they went to the dinner party together he let himself pretend that it wasn’t fake. That he could kiss her whenever he wanted to. That he could hold her hand and she wouldn’t pull away. That she wasn’t acting. That every night she could be his and love him like he couldn’t love himself. That they could be a normal bonded. But when she looked at him with hate in her eyes he was reminded that she wanted to run away again and wouldn’t tell him why. That is the reason when she asked for them to stop at a store he ignored her. If she couldn’t love him then he wouldn’t love her.

But it was so hard. He loved everything about her. He used all of his resources to find out her favorite drink and food. He had contacted every school she had ever went to, every friend she had ever made and asked countless questions in hopes of finding her when she left. If there was anything to know about Oleander Fallows, he knew it. But it didn’t help him get her back.

Nox

Nox didn’t want a bonded. After what had happened in his childhood he didn’t need one at all. He didn’t want one to mirror his parents either. Maybe if he didn’t have to share a bonded with North like his mother and her sister (North’s mother) had he could have given it a try.

But when they got the results back that his brother shared his bonded with him, his heart sunk. Would history repeat itself? Would they be doomed to the same cycle of torture?

Nox wanted to run. He wanted to get as far away from the news as he could. So when he heard that Oli had run the first thing he felt was relief. The second? Sadness. Regret. Longing. And then he settled in anger.

How dare she not want him? How dare she be bonded to him and not want him. Nox felt abandoned. He felt the terror and trauma from his childhood come creeping right back in. So he decided to hate her just like he hated his mother.

He replaced his hatred of one bonded for another.

After a few years of hating Oli and being glad she was gone, she came back. He watched as it destroyed his family once again and he decided that they would all be better if she was gone again. He wished she would just disappear. So instead of being sad that she didn’t love him, that she didn’t want him, that she didn’t care about him, he was angry. So angry he couldn’t sleep. Couldn’t eat. Couldn’t breath. That’s why he started drinking. To be drunk was to be numb. To be numb was to be safe. With her back he knew he would never be safe again.

Oleander

I think Oli’s first kiss was with Nox in the hallway after the tacteam scene and it makes me so mad for her. I hate that scene with Nox so much it made me hate him.

When Oli got away from Davies i think she made up scenarios about each of her bonds. She saw their pictures when she was in the hospital at 14 and their ages so she made up whole lives for all of them. At 16 she decided what Gifts she thought suited them best and what nicknames they might give her. She loved them so much without ever meeting them.

Oli was sure she would die without ever meeting her bonds and she was okay with that as long as it meant they would always be safe.

When she was 14 she was most excited about meeting Gabe and Atlas when she found out they were to be her bonded bc they were the same age as her. Then Nox and Gryphon because 19 isn’t that old but she wasn’t excited about meeting North because he was 24 years old. And that was just gross. What would they even have in common?

When the tacteam found her in the cafe she was excited to see her bonds for the first time but also so fucking scared she couldn’t breath. She never wanted to hurt them.

The first night in her dorm room she cried. She cried so hard she ended up passing out. She cried for all the time she wasted on the run bc what was it for if they were in danger again? She cried for her parents and she cried for herself because she could never have them. She could never love them the way she wanted to because she had to leave them again. She cried so hard and for so long she almost didn’t wake up for class. Her eyes were swollen and her nose was runny.

Oli had a diary where she wrote down all of their last names with hers just to test them out. Oleander Draven? Oleander Shore? Oleander Bassinger? Oleander Ardern? She decided that they would just have to take her last name because she was the central bond. Oleander Fallows sounded best after all.

Gabriel had bad chronic pain, his version of flares are really bad. Being held helps him feel a little better. Mercy likes to be able to help at all but wishes she could do more.

She's usually not the type who can sit still but will stay with him for hours when it's bad.

(Some people can't stand to be touched during pain flares but it always helped me. Maybe it's the heat or compression or just knowing someone cares)
