Building a Boxy Pixel Game Boy Macro
I had this broken Cobalt/Black DS Lite sitting in one of my drawers. A Macho Nacho video inspired me to dig it out. It previously sat abandoned next to a botched PSP Pandora battery and a broken iPod Video -- ready and waiting for me to finally do something with it.
I'm pretty sure I was still in high school when I put it away with the intention of fixing it. These days I've got a bunch of DS's laying around that fixing it never felt like compelling use of my time.
The DS belonged to my brother. It had no visible major damage but it suffered from a pretty common defect. The ribbon cable that connects the top screen to the motherboard was quietly ripped apart from the simple act of closing and opening it. You couldn't ask for a more perfect Macro candidate, really.
I copped the clear plastic shell, aluminum housing, custom glass screen lens, and the necessary 330 ohm resistor from Boxy Pixel. I sourced a Nintendo Switch speaker from eBay.
If I had to do this again I'd source that plastic shell from somewhere else. The fitment wasn't great on the ones Boxy Pixel sells and it was missing some parts that I had to transplant over from the original shell.
I did my first teardown the week prior just to see what about that top screen was broken. I confirmed that it was a torn ribbon cable and put it all back together minus the top half while I waited for everything to arrive.
When all my parts showed up I opened it back up, pulled the motherboard off the orignal shell and removed the LCD screen from the board. I then soldered the resistor and speaker to the board and scraped off a connector that wasn't going to be necessary anymore to make room for the new speaker. I put the thing back together minus the lens just to test that it was working. It wasn't.
I didn't connect the LCD screen's ribbon cable correctly. Once I got that all working I then had to open it up a third time to swap out the new clear buttons with the original ones. The buttons that came with the transparent shell weren't doing it for me.
It's a bummer because I was really down for the look of those transparent buttons. It broke up the all black front shell. The final results were pretty enough, though.
I later went online and found one of the newer EZ Flash cartridges that could sit flush with the shorter DS Lite cartridge slot. It cleaned the look up a lot and I'm pretty happy with the final results.
Next time if I ever come into possession of a broken DS Lite I might try and have fun with the available shell colors. There's a purple aluminum shell one that I'm feeling a lot.

Restoring Cartridges
The two wires I soldered with my first Game Boy backlit screen mod gave me the confidence to go through my bin of cartridges and revive any with dead save batteries.
It's good soldering practice. The Nintendo solder is stubborn, though. I had to crank the heat to get it to melt. Adding solder to the tabs helped.
I wish tabbed coin batteries were easier to find. Console5 usually has them in stock but they're getting harder and harder to come by. If anyone has any leads on where I can cop 'em for not outrageous pricing reliably, hit me up.
