The High Line
Tumblr media
The High Line is another wonderful Hudson Yards attraction that is absolutely free for visitors. Spanning from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District all the way up to 34th Street at Hudson Yards, this Hudson Yards attraction offers a pedestrian-only elevated experience of the lower west side through exclusively native greenery and expertly designed pathways.
The park opened in 2009 after a long battle to save it from demolition when it was only an abandoned elevated train rail—a remnant of the old subway system. Along the way you can find outdoor art installations, food and beverage cart options, lounge and bench seating, and more.
Keep an eye out for parts the park designers deliberately kept to remind visitors of what the Highline once was, like train tracks, stop lights, and a large archway meant to accommodate train passage!

✍️🏾Reposted from www.whitney.org
"For more than thirty years, the Los Angeles–based artist #HenryTaylor (b. 1958) has portrayed people from widely different backgrounds—family members, friends, neighbors, celebrities, politicians, and strangers—with a mixture of raw immediacy and tenderness. His improvisational approach to artmaking is hinted at in this exhibition’s title, Henry Taylor: B Side, which refers to the side of a record album that often contains lesser-known, more experimental songs.
Taylor’s paintings, executed quickly and instinctually from memory, newspaper clippings, snapshots, and in-person sittings, are variously light-hearted, intimate, and somber. In them, he combines flat planes of bold, sensuous color with areas of rich, intimate detail and loose brushstrokes to create paintings that feel alive. Guided by a deep-seated empathy for people and their lived experiences, Taylor captures the humanity, social milieu, and mood of his subjects, whose visceral presence is heightened by their closely cropped, often life-size images. In working from personal experience and shared history, Taylor offers a view of everyday life in the United States that is grounded in the experiences of his own community, including the incarceration, poverty, and often deadly interactions with police that disproportionately affect Black Americans. Deeply steeped in art history, his work forms a continuum with the expressive figurative painting and politically engaged work of European and American artists from Max Beckmann to Bob Thompson, Philip Guston, and Alice Neel."

The 1950s - part 3
Teddy Boys
For the first time in many years men's wear was undergoing significant changes.
Teddy Boys were vary particular about the way they dressed. Their jackets were mainly long lined creating a slim silhouette, there trousers were tapered and were paired with crepe soled shoes.
The image below shows a Teddy boy dressed for a dance at the Tottenham Royal Dance Hall.

As well as there clothing Teddy boys paid particular attention to their hair. They would use Brylceamed to create the DA (ducks arse) look.

Abstract Expressionism
As the world started to recover from the trauma of war, new art movements began to develop. There were major influences on the 1950s art which were made by 1920s avant-garde movements, modernism, surrealism and abstract painting.

A Guide to the High Line in New York City
Tumblr media
The High Line is one of the most iconic spots in the city and a must-see for any visitor. This guide will provide you with all the information you need to make the most out of your High Line experience. The High Line is a public park built on an abandoned elevated railway line in New York City's West Side. This unique park features a wide variety of activities, from strolling along the gardens and taking in the views of the city, to participating in art installations and other events.
The High Line is divided into three sections: the Southern, the Northern and the Western. The Southern section runs from Gansevoort Street to 20th Street, and features gardens, art installations, and views of the Hudson River. The Northern section runs from 20th to 30th Streets, and includes a beautiful lawn, seating areas, and spectacular views of the city skyline.
Places to Take Photos in the High Line
Tumblr media
Greenwalk in New York The High Line is a great place to take photos. The elevated park offers stunning views of the city, and the gardens and other features provide perfect backdrops for your photos. The most popular spots for photos are the elevated walkways, which provide a unique perspective of the city. There are also plenty of benches, sculptures, and other art installations that make for great photo ops.
The High Line History
Tumblr media
The first phase of the High Line was completed in 2009 and is divided into three sections: Southern (Gansevoort Street to 20th Street), Northern (20th to 30th Streets), and Western (30th to 34th Streets). It has become an iconic part of New York City and a major economic driver for the local community, providing jobs, generating revenue and offering stunning views, public art, green spaces, recreational activities, and educational programs.
The High Line in New York City is a mile-long linear park in Manhattan that was once an elevated freight rail line. The High Line was built in the 1930s by the New York Central Railroad to elevate freight traffic off the city streets. When the elevated rail line was in use, it served as a major artery for the city. The last train ran on the tracks in 1980, and the tracks were abandoned in the 1990s. In 1999, a group of local residents and business owners, called Friends of the High Line, proposed transforming the abandoned rail line into an elevated park.
The group’s vision was to create an innovative and unique public space for New Yorkers to enjoy. In 2002, the city of New York adopted the Friends of the High Line’s plan, and the non-profit organization was granted a license to manage the project. The first phase of the High Line was completed in 2009, and it has since become one of the most popular attractions in the city.
Today, the High Line has become a major tourist attraction and is a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. The park features a variety of activities, including art installations, gardens, and views of the city.
