279: V/A // Sky Girl
Tumblr media
Sky Girl Various Artists 2013/2016 (reissue), Not on label/Efficient Space (Bandcamp)
Funny little compilation here, assembled from various ‘60s to ‘90s private and art presses by two French DJs. Of course, clearance issues come for us all—the original independently-released 2013 CD version had a rather different track list than this 2016 vinyl reissue on the Australian Efficient Space label. Still, in either formulation Sky Girl has a wonderful melancholy sweetness, mapping an emotional Venn diagram between C86 indie, Vashti Bunyan, Arthur Russell, bedroom R&B, gawky synth pop, and beyond. Being largely* from the private press realm, the originals of these recordings are nearly all painfully pricey: Warfield Spillers’ “Daddy’s Little Girl” single crosses the soul ballad with Beat Happening lo-fi and will cost you $800; an original of the Rising Storm LP that contains “Frozen Laughter,” an impossibly delicate psychedelic idyll, will run you a cool six grand or so. Unlike a lot of comps that focus on this market, this isn’t really weirdo stuff. These people are for the most part fairly talented and seemingly sane people who are trying their best to make good music that will make the listener feel something. Some of them probably could’ve gotten a bite at the record industry apple with a little more luck, but a lot of the songs the compilers have selected have a private vibe that seems endemic to their nature, like overhearing something intended for a lover or a diary. Collectors pay a premium for that sense, like some Japanese novel about lovers who never meet but distantly pine in a waft of mutual déjà vu (this I guess is the plot of Le double vie de Véronique also, and “Ana Ng”).
youtube
I would’ve loved if the compilation’s liners had offered more of the stories of these recordings, though it’s admittedly fun to Do My Own Research sometimes. (And the reissue cover is lamentably drab.) The 2016 version of the comp is readily available on streaming platforms for those who wish to sample—I especially recommend prolific indie cassette artist Linda Smith’s “I So Liked Spring,” Australian minimal wave obscurity Karen Marks’ “Cold Café,” and the robotic puberty-angst groover “Feeling Sheepish” by Some of My Best Friends Are Canadians. But Sky Girl really is more than the sum of its parts, as any good mixtape should be.
279/365
* The CD version did open with a track by the Haruomi Hosono-affiliated duo Testpattern that was well-distributed, in Japan at least.

This is literally me all the time.
If I find a Grayson hater I turn into a different person literally I turn into a full on mamma bear /wild ass solider. (Ik people are allowed opinions and normally I would just leave them alone but when you start making fun of his trauma than my claws come out bc while you wear laughing I was crying.)
I would go to war to protect Graybear online. I become a full on hater and troll. I mean I once hit my best friend in the face with her own lunch box bc she told me Jameson was better. Don't worry y'all she's okay. 🙏🏼😁💀🌞😜🤞🏼 (That was when the og trilogy was out and have long moved on from team Grayson and Jameson.)
This is me declining that I should be the captain of the online army that protect Grayson Davenport Hawthorne. 💀🤞🏼😁💚🥰🥰
I shall be caption of protecting Grayson in Gray Gary nation. 🤞🏼💓🤭

Twelve O'Clock High (1949)
Tumblr media
Basic Story: After a string of disastrous missions, the 918th Bomb Group gets a new commander to try to get things back on track.
Fan Thoughts: Twelve O’Clock high is another film based on a novel of the same name, following the American 918th Bomb Group based in Archbury, England.  The group commander Colonel Keith Davenport (Gary Merrill) has a defeatist attitude that only worsens with each poorly executed mission and having bonded with the men under his command, is unwilling to reprimand them for even costly mistakes.  After observing this behavior in his friend, Brigadier General Frank Savage (Gregory Peck) relays this information to the Major General, who promptly replaces Davenport with Savage.  While Savage is brought in to whip the group into shape, it doesn’t fall into any training montages or the majority of tropes films with this plotline take.  The audience gets to see that while Savage is a much harder hand with command, he helps his crews become more competent and believe in their own abilities, ultimately leading to more successful missions and fewer losses.  Gregory Peck turns in an excellent performance, as do the other actors, everyone is believable in their roles.  Additionally, the pacing gives the audience enough time to absorb what is happening without lagging.  This was a pleasant film to watch with enough action to keep the audience engaged but plenty of character-building scenes to add depth.
Warnings: none

Happy Birthday the super sexy Scottish actress  Michelle Gomez.
Michelle was born as Michelle May Romney Marsham Antonia Gomez in Ayr in 1966, and grew up in Glasgow. Her dad is of Portuguese descent and is from  Montserrat, her mum ran a model agency’ She is one of four children; two older brothers, one of whom is called Derek, and a twin brother who died in.2004.
When she was seven, her parents took her to see Cole Porter’s musical take on the Shrew, Kiss Me, Kate at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow and she was mesmerised by the character Kate, she described it as
“ I was electrified and, of course, I thought they were talking to me. Even then I had an ego running riot. And I loved Kate’s energy, her fieriness. Even at that age, I identified; I thought: ‘Yup, I’m one of her, she’s one of me.”
Michelle attended Shawlands Academy and the junior section of The Scottish Academy of Music and Dance from the age of twelve before going to the adult Academy.
Her first major role was in Irvine Welsh's  Acid House , that’s my pal Gary McCormack with her in the first pic, she went on to make small screen appearances in The Bill and Taggart (two different roles in each) before the very funny and underrated Book Club on channel Four.
Other TV appearances have been in Rebus, Murder in Suburbia and Carrie & Barry before her big break as staff liaison officer Sue White in the Channel 4 comedy Green Wing.
For me Michelle’s best work has been as “Missy” in Dr Who, where she regularly steals scenes. Before the first female Doctor, she was the first female “Master”, one of the Doctors recurring arch enemies.
As well as her roles on this side of the Atlantic Michelle has appeared in Highlander: The Raven the American supernatural television series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, featuring in all 36 episodes, the show got rave reviews but I have not watched it myself, not being a fan of the supernatural horror genre. It was cancelled in July 2020 due to the covid pandemic, I wouldn’t write off it being picked up again in the future, some sources are erroneously saying a series 5 is due soon.
Michelle has been on our screens in The Flight Attendant, series based on the 2018 novel of the same name, it’s on HBO Max in the States, I must admit I’ve not got round to watching it as yet, the show was originally meant to be a mini-series, but a second series was commissioned and it was shown in April this year. It’s not known whether there will be a third series as yet.
Fans of Michelle and the Superhero genre will be pleased that they return to HBO Max in December.
No doubt we will also see her return to Dr Who someday, I certainly hope so. Gomez has been married to actor Jack Davenport since 1st May 2000 they have a son together. Of him she said
“Jack wasn't my type at all. I thought he was too young and too posh and I told him that. Plus, I couldn't deal with his dodgy bowl-cut. But he wore me down”
Of herself Michelle is very modest one saying
“Lots of actresses disappear by the time they're my age. So far, I've bucked the trend. I haven't got sucked into that 26-episode run of something like Casualty. Thankfully, my face has stopped that happening. It's not something you want to see every week on TV! I'm theatrical saffron in that way - just a light sprinkling of me here and there...”
Of her ambitions Michelle says it is to play Mama Rose in Gypsy on stage on Broadway.
“That would be checking every box in my career if I got to play that. That is my biggest ambition! Oh my, I would ROCK THAT! I need to learn how to sing first, but that is just a technicality.”
Happy Birthday Michelle and good luck with getting on stage in Gypsy.

Jennifer Salt in Sisters (Brian De Palma, 1973)
Cast: Margot Kidder, Jennifer Salt, Charles Durning, William Finley, Lisle Wilson, Barnard Hughes, Mary Davenport, Dolph Sweet. Screenplay: Brian De Palma, Louisa Rose. Cinematography: Gregory Sandor. Production design: Gary Weist. Film editing: Paul Hirsch. Music: Bernard Herrmann.
You can get caught up playing Spot the Steal while watching Brian De Palma's Sisters as he steals from Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window (1954), borrows from Psycho (1960), or pays homage to Rope (1948), as many critics have noted. He also called out of retirement the composer most associated with Hitchcock, Bernard Herrmann, to compose the score. But the central borrowing is of Hitchcock's most prevalent theme: voyeurism. In the opening scene, Danielle (Margot Kidder) and Phillip (Lisle Wilson) appear on a parody of a reality game show that has a voyeuristic premise: He's a man changing in a locker room when she enters on the other side of a partition that has some missing panels. When he realizes that she's blind and she starts to change clothes, what should he do? The contestants on the show have to predict his action: Will he watch? Will he tell her he can see her? Will he turn away? After the show, Phillip learns that Danielle is not really blind, and they go out to dinner and then back to her apartment where he spends the night with her. But he encounters some complications: He learns that she has a jealous ex-husband (William Finley) and that she has a twin sister named Dominique who is staying overnight in her bedroom because it's the twins' birthday. What happens next is partly witnessed by another voyeur: Grace (Jennifer Salt), a journalist (she writes a column for a Staten Island newspaper but dreams of better things) who witnesses some of what happens in Danielle's apartment from her own across a courtyard. But when she calls the police to tell them what she saw, at first they don't believe her (she has written articles criticizing the cops), and then when they go to Danielle's apartment there's no evidence that what she saw has happened there. We know the truth, so the suspense in the rest of the film comes from Grace's attempt, with the help of a private detective (Charles Durning), to uncover both the crime and the cleanup. It's a nicely plotted variation on the Hitchcockian theme. The film suffers because Grace is written and overplayed as a nervous wreck, plagued by an interfering mother (Mary Davenport), another Hitchcockian trope. And the revelation that Danielle and Dominique were conjoined twins who were separated introduces some not too convincing psychology. But the suspense and the ironic ending are nicely handled. Watch for Olympia Dukakis in a bit part as a woman behind the counter of a bakery.

Over the Hedge: The Big Heist is an American computer-animated heist comedy film loosely based on the comic strip of the same name by Michael Fry and T. Lewis. Produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures, it is the sequel to Over the Hedge (2006). The film is directed by Joel Crawford and co-directed by Karey Kirkpatrick from a screenplay written by Paul Fisher, Bob Logan, and Kirkpatrick and produced by Bonnie Arnold. The music for the film was composed by Heitor Pereira and songs were written by Ben Folds.
In the film’s ensemble voice cast, Steve Carell, Wanda Sykes, Thomas Haden Church, Allison Janney, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Avril Lavigne, and Omid Djalili reprised their roles from the first film, with the exception of Bruce Willis (who retired from his acting career in 2022), Gary Shandling (who passed away in 2016), William Shatner, and Nick Nolte, all of whom are replaced by Stephen Stanton, Drew Massey, and Jess Harnell.
Based on the storyline of the 2006 tie-in video game, the film follows RJ, Hammy, Verne, and the gang, who feel that they need to have more things for the log. This leads them on a wild romp through six different areas to snatch different things while avoiding the Verminator during their heist, who tries to defeat them by using a mind-controlled vermin he has captured as his henchmen.
A sequel to Over the Hedge was first announced, with Karey Kirkpatrick returning and Joel Crawford helming the project. As with DreamWorks' previous films The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, the inspiration for the film's animation style came from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which gives it a visual style that resembles storybook illustrations. To make the film look like a comic strip, the team focused more on a Peanuts Movie style design by using new technology, different than what it was in the first film, which utilized the realistic style like Shrek (2001).
The film received positive reviews from critics, with praise for its animation, voice acting, writing, and humor, with many deeming it superior to its predecessor.
Cast
Steve Carell as Hammy, a hyperactive American red squirrel.
Wanda Sykes as Stella, a short-tempered, sassy stripped skunk.
Thomas Haden Church as Dwayne LaFontant, an over-zealous, middle-aged pest exterminator nicknamed the "Verminator".
Allison Janney as Gladys Sharp, the president of the El Rancho Camelot Estates Home Owners Association.
Eugene Levy as Lou, a North American porcupine and Penny’s husband.
Catherine O’Hara as Penny, a North American porcupine and Lou’s wife.
Avril Lavigne as Heather, a Virginia opossum and Ozzie’s teenage daughter.
Omid Djalili as Tiger, a Persian cat and Stella’s fiancé.
Stephen Stanton as RJ, a duplicitous, selfish, con artist, and extremely intelligent raccoon, and Ozzie, a Virginia opossum and Heather’s father.
Drew Massey as Verne, a naturally cynical ornate box turtle and leader of the foragers.
Jess Harnell as Vincent, a murderous, sadistic and conscienceless American black bear.
Shane Baumel, Sami Kirkpatrick, and Madison Davenport as Spike, Bucky and Quillo, Lou and Penny's three identical children. They appear through the use of previously-recorded material from the first film and the 2006 tie-in video game.
Brian Stephane as Nugent, an excitable Rottweiler whose only spoken word is "Play!". He otherwise communicates by barks.
Charlie Schlatter as Milton, a mole who is mind-controlled by Dwayne LaFontant.
