A random question about “The Tough Guide to Fantasy Land”.

More precisely, the “Gay Mage” article.

I remember when I first heard of the Tough Guide, quite some times ago, I saw people being confused by the Gay Mage article since they didn’t recall any character from famous or classic fantasy books previous to The Tough Guide that would fit the bill. They didn’t felt like it was an archetype of fantasy or a stock-character of the genre, and wondered where it came from.

After some years, and reading a lot of fantasy books, I found one character that existed previous to the Tough Guide, and which fits the bill perfectly for this article: Mathew, from the “Rose of the Prophet” series. An effeminate, gay (well, maybe more homoromantic than homosexual if I recall well) wizard acting as a deuteragonist in the trilogy. Mathew seems to have clearly been one of the characters who inspired the “Gay Mage” entry of the Tough Guide - and I haven’t been the only one noticing this - but... is it the only one?

Beyond Mathew I couldn’t find any other character that would fit the entry. Maybe this article is a little joke/nod towards the Rose of the Prophet - but I wonder if it would be weird, since Rose of the Prophet (despite being a very entertaining, inventive and pleasant fantasy story) is relatively unknown, and certainly not as widespread or famous as other works of their authors?

I don’t know, I am just wondering about it for years now X)
