sometimes stede wonders if he ever really were a lighthouse.

he wonders if the light cast upon the sea was only the imitation of moonlight, as his bulb sat dormant in the head of the lighthouse.

he wonders that, if the light house casts no light, is it complicit? is it responsible for the ruins of hulls and masts that stir below it in the frothing white edge of the ocean?

Or is it the blinding light, ever turning at the peak of the old Oceanside tower, that should be held accountable, luring in ships with the promise of light and land and warmth.

He wonders whether it was worth to stay with his family, stuck at the edge of the sea at the peak of the tower, or if he was right to dim his light and leave.

He wonders if being a lighthouse is truly a good thing.

His vows asked him to be constant, unwavering, but if you only look you'll find that the beam of light that the lighthouse casts is never constant, blinking bright into the darkness before curling away into the shadows and letting the darkness envelop all.

He wonders if to leave someone in the dark is better than to leave someone with the unfulfilled promise of a glinting light, that always turns away.

but that is pushed to the back of his mind, nowadays, the floor beneath his feet unsteady as his floor bobs and rocks with the dark ocean water.

At sea there are no lighthouses.
