Masterpost: Frīg's Handmaidens Project
Who are the Handmaidens?
In the Prose Edda, twelve Goddesses are listed after Frigga as Ásynjur: Fulla, Gefjon, Hlín, Syn, Eir, Sága, Gná, Vár or Vór, Snotra, Vör, Lofn and Sjöfn. Modern Heathens sometimes refer to Them as Frigga's Handmaidens. (This is a piece of shared gnosis, not an historically attested term.) For many of the Twelve, this is all that survives in the way of attestations.
What is the Project?
Gradually over several years, and more intentionally recently, I have been building a devotional cultus around these Goddesses. As part of that, I've been putting together primers on each of the Twelve on my longform blog -- detailing Their surviving attestations, Old English God-names and epithets for Them, my own personal experiences and upg, a prayer, and devotional icon art -- as well as essays and modern myths exploring other aspects of Them and my cultus to Them.
Although I use Old English names for Them and honour Them in a syncretic heathen practice drawing on influences from across the British and Irish Isles, I hope these may be useful and/or interesting for practitioners working in a Norse, Continental, or other context. Or for anyone worshipping and building cultus to lesser-known and lesser-attested Gods!
I will update this post periodically, but if you like you can subscribe to my longform Wordpress blog for updates when I post.

How I think Elsa and Co. may be when they first meet several Norse deities in person
. Thor : Of fucking course Thor being a boisterous bruiser he is just basically loudly welcomes and greets them and then Kristoff goes fanboy mode on Thor cuz he thinks Thor is so cool. They soon be drinking mead and energetically sing and dance together
. Loki : They don't really know what to think of Loki at first, partially due to Loki's Machivellan and unpredictable traits ( yes Loki is machivellan and unpredictable in the Norse Myths ). But when Loki begins to talk animatedly about Sigyn, they become more chill with him
. Sif : They think she is a ' cool aunt ' like figure and Anna and Sif began talking about harvest related stuff ( similarly with Sif, Anna also became passionate about harvest related shit )
. Nanna : They are charmed by her warm and gracious presence and they soon make hot chocolate together
. Bragi : Kristoff and Anna soon be singing their hearts out with Bragi as Elsa just watches and claps along
. Skadi : They defo be bowing in deference to the one who blessed Elsa with ice powers. At first they are kinda intimidated with her yet relaxed somewhat once Skadi treated them wjth courtesy and respect
. Baldr : They have to shield themselves from how bright Baldr literally shone and Baldr began talking to Elsa and Co. stuff about geography and shit
. Hodr : He's blind, but luckily Kristoff is able to help Hodr picture things via vivid descriptions ( a thing that Kristoff became great at )
. Gefjon : They treat Gefjon with respect since she was more of a no nonsense sort, yet they are more relaxed around her once Gefjon shows her warmer sides
. Odin : They think he is terrifying yet basically treated him wjth deference and respect
. Frigga : They are amazed by her elegance and refinery and treat her with deference and respect
. Idunn : Anna is a big fan of Idunn growing up ( partially cuz her mother is name inspired by Idunn - I mean, duh ) and she and Kristoff began talking about Apple related stuff and spring together
. Fulla : They are charmed by Fulla's hospitality and they be exchanging gossip together ( yes, Fulla has a penchant for gossip at times )
. Tyr : They are at first intimidated with him, yet they become more relaxed once Tyr began to have some beers with them
. Zisa : They are enchanted with her refined and warm demeanor and then they began talking about autumn and harvest related matters
. Gullveig : They think that Gullveig is a force to be reckoned with and Gullveig told them some more stuff about Nordic magic
. Sigyn : They think she is so sweet and cute and soon be making some raspberry hand pies together...and then Sigyn tells them some more stuff about valkyrie and volva related matters
. Andrhimnir : They soon began a musical number WHILE PREPARING A MEAL TOGETHER

Men who are younger than 30 feel more “threatened” by progress on women’s rights, according to a major new study.
Researchers, who polled almost 32,500 people across 27 EU countries, noted while gender equality has increased in Western democracies in recent times, this has been coupled with a rise in “modern sexism” which is “working against women’s rights”.
The report, conducted at the University of Gothenburg, discovered younger men were more likely than older men to agree with the statement “promoting women’s and girls” rights has gone too far as it “threatens” the “opportunities” available for men and boys.
Gefjon Off, one of the report’s authors, noted the findings demonstrate young men aged between 18 and 29 “most often agree with this statement”.
Ms Off, a political science doctoral student, added: “The older the men are, the less they agree with this statement. Some women agree with the statement, but to a far lesser extent than men of all ages.
“The results contradict previous research claiming that the older generation are the ones who are the most conservative and opposed to advances in women’s rights”.
She argued people think greater gender equality just advantages women - rather than seeing the “benefits” for wider society.
“Some research suggests that this feeling of injustice can even motivate citizens to vote for right-wing radical parties who are against feminism and sexual freedom,” Ms Off added.
“Possibly, young men who believe that women are outcompeting them in the labour market experience advances in women’s rights as unjust and a threat.
“We need to get better at communicating the benefits of gender equality. Fathers get to spend more time with their children and the burden of being the family’s breadwinner is lightened when mothers in families also advance in their careers”.
Rising levels of unemployment may provide an explanation of why younger men are more likely to be sexist, the study suggested.
Researchers said: "The proportion is highest in regions where unemployment has risen the most in recent years, and where citizens have a widespread distrust of social institutions for example, due to widespread corruption.”
Slovakia was found to be the EU country where the “highest proportion of young men are opposed to advances in women’s rights”, researchers added, saying in some parts of the country, unemployment has surged by 1.1 per cent in the past two years.
Nicholas Charron, a professor in political science involved in the study, said: “More than other EU citizens, Slovaks think that their own country’s public institutions are not impartial, that is, that their social institutions favour certain groups of people”.
He added: “The gap between young women’s and young men’s views on advancing women’s rights is great in Sweden, among the top 10 in the EU according to our measurements”.
Researchers discovered this also plays out in reverse contexts, noting in areas like Northern Italy where unemployment has decreased and people have greater trust in social institutions, young men are less opposed to women’s rights progressing.
In the UK, gender inequality persists, with women heading only five per cent of the top 350 companies. While women make up less than a third of the top jobs in the UK, according to a recent report by the Fawcett Society, the UK’s leading gender equality charity, which also discovered women of colour are under-represented at the highest levels in a vast range of sectors.
Women are wholly absent from senior roles such as Supreme Court justices, FTSE 100 chief executives, metro mayors, and police and crime commissioners, researchers found.

konahrik, warmongering high priestess of the dragon viinturuth, and a lesser sonaak whose name was either purged from history or never recorded
in the early fourth era, the antiquarian who came into possession of this forgotten sonaak's mask met his end in the ruins of morokei's once-mighty city; about two centuries later, the relic was rediscovered there by the man who would become the ninety-third archmage of winterhold. konahrik's mask was later found in an atemporal pocket nearby, delighting and baffling historians. the nature of the relationship between konahrik and the forgotten sonaak—whose mask, curiously enchanted, allows its wearer to enter the chamber where konahrik's mask is enshrined—remains a matter of speculation

EIR, THE PACIFIST IS REDESIGNED
The Valkyrie known as "the purest" and "the pacifist" was finally redesigned!!! Known as the goddess of healing and has a seat in the hall of Vingólf.
She now finally looks like a norse healer!
In her living days, Eir had always been a care and kind soul, always treating with compassion even the most dangerous of creatures, befriending everyone that she crossed path with, and that reflrected on her village, filled with the most of amazing people. From the littlelest of elves to the largest of ogres and she managed to not only make peace among the villagers, but also between other villages and kingdoms, which evolved into such a gigantic kingdom of peace, it was used as reference for other villages and kingdoms inside AND outside Midgard. The news of Eir "The Pacifist" spread like fire, but one person did not like all this mixing of races and species, and that was Eir's supposedly best friend and right hand.
The man couldn't for his life accept any non humans and his so called "best friend" title was nothing more than a way to raise into power. His plan of assassinating Eir took place in her own room, at the dead of night and the culprit was none other than the monsters she wholeheartedly let inside her kingdom, or so the villagers heard from the right hand man. That led into an all out war against the magical creatures and the banning of them, making it a human-only kingdom.
As for Eir, she couldn't go to Valhalla neither Fólkvangr due to the way she died, but the gods were so impressed with her work in life, they gifted her the most incredible items in her journey to Helheim. Through the cold desert of Helheim, she never ever doubt her friend's trust, but instead, blamed herself for making him hate her and knew she would spent eternity with the guilt of losing her most closest friend, but her good heart and kindness led her to be welcomed to Helheim with utmost honors by not only Helgeisten, but Rán and Gefjon, deities of the dead, that gifted her with the eyes of the deities, able to go and see through all realms and inbetweens.
After finalling being able to return to Midgard, now as a Valkyrie, she wanted to see her friend and apologize for being such a bad friend to him, but upon witnessing her friend's true intentions, she cried rivers, blaming herself for not noticing her friend in his dark path, and flooded the surroundings of the kingdom, protecting the creatures from townspeople and creating a lake around her old kingdom. After the demise of the kingdom and death of the king in battle, she herself took him to Valhalla.

Djall visits the other Lords of the Afterlife...
“What do you mean you don’t know where she goes?! You accidentally sent her to HELL and now you don’t know where to put her?  I’m not running a fucking soul daycare down there.  Why can’t you just put her in one of your happy worlds and call it a day?”  Djall was absolutely flabbergasted as he looked at the other Lords of the Afterlife that had convened to deal with the six remaining souls that were not where they should be.  The problem was that no one was quite sure where any of them WERE supposed to go, and no one wanted to just take one.
“Now, Djall, you know it doesn’t work that way.  We can’t just take a soul and treat it like a lost puppy.  Here, don’t pee in the River Styxx, enjoy the Elysian Fields.”  Hades was none too happy either, he had a small child suck in his realm that he wanted to give to anyone else before Persephone showed back up and decided they should keep it.  The thought almost gave him hives.
“She’s not mummified or even embalmed, so I don’t know why anyone’s looking at me.”  Anubis sat back.  At least he could sit this one out and didn’t have anyone he needed to get rid of.  Somehow he’d lucked out on this SNAFU.  Last time…he didn’t want to think about last time.  He was still trying to calm Maahes down about that fiasco.
Gefjon looked around, glad Freyja had sat this one out. “Technically she is a virgin, so I could take her, but I’d have to get Odin’s approval.  She wasn’t a warrior, so I’m not sure he’s going to approve.”  She turned her attention to Hades, “and you’re shit out of luck. Kids don’t count.”  She was pretty sure Odin was going to say no anyway.  He and Djall had a falling out a few centuries before, so it wasn’t like the All Father had any reason to do the Lord of Hell a favor.
Next it was time for Mantus and Orcus, who somehow had gotten two souls redirected to their realm that didn’t belong there.  “I think one of ours belongs to Hades, she’s Greek and believes in the old gods.  I don’t know where the other goes.  I don’t think we need Djall’s either.  Djall, just keep her or something.  At least she’s not trying to kill you constantly, count your blessings, dude.”
Djall could absolutely not believe this.  None of them acted the least bit worried about the six souls that were in their care or finding out where they should go.  Add to that Odin, Baal, Shiva, Amun, Yahweh, and the other ruling gods had gone off on some “team building retreat” and would not answer summons, prayers, or offerings.  So, now he had an innocent soul in his realm that could get stuck there because a bunch of fuckwits didn’t really care.  Why did he care more than they did?
“Listen, we have to do something.  The longer that innocent souls stay in hell realms and not in at least neutral territory, the greater the risk for smudges.  Miriana already has one because she got dumped in the Forest of Beasts and a hellcat attacked her.  I have to watch how long I touch her, how close she gets to my staff, and a myriad of other things so that she doesn’t get so smudged that she can’t leave.  Am I the only one concerned about the damn souls we’ve got all fucked up?”  Djall looked around the room.
“No, but we don’t know what to do.  Right now, no one’s happy but everyone’s safe.  What if we change something and make it worse, Djall.  Your soul is alive and you’re keeping her safe.  If she came to our realm, she might get injured or obliterated.  There are no guarantees.  Until the ruling gods come back, I don’t know what we can do since we have no idea where they go.”  Orcus sounded as stressed at Djall, and that did at least make the latter male feel a little better.  To know that he wasn’t the only one worried about the soul in his care.
“The other consideration is that if we move them to another realm and they get all comfy and cozy, what happens when it’s wrong?  What if they’ve made friends or met someone that steals their heart?  Do you want to be responsible for moving them twice and causing a broken heart the second time?  At least this way we only have to deal with the upset once.”  Djall hated it when Hades made sense, but the man had been married forever, so he did have a clue about a few things.  He too didn’t look all too happy, more resigned to his fate. “Fine, but I hope that the ruling gods know that none of us can be held responsible if something happens to the souls in our care while they’re out….doing whatever the fuck gods do in order to team build.”  Djall shook his head, trying not to grind his teeth, then he disappeared.  He’d had enough of the other Lords of Death.  He needed away from it.  Strangely, he found himself wanting to go talk to Miriana, but since it was the middle of the night and the poor girl had been flat out exhausted, he decided better of it.  Instead he would go back to his study, he had an idea of what Miriana could do until they figured out where she belonged, at least it would keep her too busy to think about the fact she now lived in Hell in the home of the proverbial Devil.

Camp Half-Blood
Askeladd (Camp Director)
~ Askeladd is the most famous and well-known of all of Odin's sons. He is thousands of years old and regularly visits Vahalla. He has been known to lay with many Valkyrie and even (allegedly) had a one-night stand with the goddess Freyja. He has been known to regularly taunt a camper known as Thorfinn and is never seen without Bjorn by his side.
Bjorn (Activities Director)
~ Bjorn is half Jötnar (frost giant) and half God. He is the son of Idun and regularly visits her. He helps her tend to her magical foods and always gets his enchanted berserker mushrooms from her. Out of all of Idun's children, Bjorn is her favorite by far. He has also been known to have many mead drinking contests with Thor and is often one of the first ones to point fingers towards Loki whenever something goes awry.
Thorfinn (Cabin Nine)
~ One of his fathers is the god Tyr, and his other father is a man named Thors. He absolutely fucking hates Askeladd with all of his guts for killing his father. Unfortunately, he did not inherit much of either his father's morality or sense of peaceful justice. He is often seen with two daggers that were gifted to him by Tyr to protect himself.
~ He has grown close with another camper named Einar. However, he seems to be aggressively flirting (?) with a camper named Canute. Nobody is really able to tell if he really likes Canute or really hates him. Gudrid is always following him around like a lost puppy, and no matter how many times Thorfinn threatens to kill her, she just won't leave him alone.
Canute (Cabin Six)
~ Canute is the son of the goddess Freyja. He was born in the body of a woman and realized that he was meant to be a man. So he decided to be a complete genderfuck to society, and Freyja supports him through this. Freyja blessed him with a new male body and kept some of his more feminine features (upon his request) that will grow into fine masculine traits.
~ This is to soften the blow of how unsupportive and vile his father is towards him. However, Sweyn knows any great harm to Canute will cause Freyja to sick Loki on him. Next thing you know, Sweyn wakes up in Niflheim.
More of Canutes daddy issues except his father is a mortal and his mother supports him? Yes, please.
~ Canute is often seen near the nymphs and faes, discussing things with them and spending valuable time with them. He always ends up getting harassed (?) or oddly supported (?) by Thorfinn. Thorfinn always jumps in and threatens to kill anybody who lays a hand on Canute. Canute has grown to quite like Einar and Gudrid. He can also be seen occasionally studying with Arnheid.
Einar (Cabin Eleven)
~ Einar is a feminist and loves farming, so of course he is the son of Gefjon. The benevolent earth faes are often around Einar, watching him work on the earth and using his magic to allow it to grow. To uses his magic to grow flowers and fruits for Arnheid. He gets quite frustrated at the fact that Arnheid is more interested in Gardar than him. He respects her feelings but is still saddened by them. Every time he realizes this, his plants seem to wilt.
~ He spends a lot of time with Thorfinn and always trains with him. He always loses, but it's better than having to face Sigurd. Sigurd is always threatening Einar about stealing his future wife. (?) He is still quite confused about why Gudrid would want to marry a man like Sigurd. He has no feelings for her.
An actual conversation between Einar and Sigurd. (I know... I was there.)
"I think I want to study milking cows." Einar states passively as he walks towards one of the many barns on the camp.
"You can't study milking cows." Sigurd states in an irritated tone as he crosses his arms over his chest and huffs.
"Yuh, huh, yes, you can! Garm told me about it!"
"Garm... Son of Loki... You're stupid Einar. No way you're ever stealing my future wife!"
*Insert both of them getting in a fist fight and Garm hiding in a bush..... giggling like a madman.*
Gudrid (Cabin Two)
~ Gudrid is the daughter of Frigg and is treated like the queen of the camp. She is quite kind (albeit a bit of a bitch behind certain campers backs. *cough cough*) Frigg is quite doting upon her but tries to keep her on Midgard most of her days. Loki has a strange attachment to her, and it worries Frigg greatly.
~ She often follows Thorfinn around camp and tries to get his attention. She asks her mother if perhaps she could set something up between the both of them. She really, really likes Thorfinn. Although he keeps giving all of his attention to this Canute guy.
Arnheid (Cabin Five)
~ Arnheid is the daughter of Baldr. She inherited a lot of her good nature and peaceful personality from him. Baldr allowed her mother immortality, and their love story is so sweet that it makes her heart swoon. She wants a family of her own one day. She hopes for another camper, Gardar. He's so handsome and managed to save her life from a dragur (Norse equivalent of a zombie/evil spirit).
~ She spends a lot of time with Einar and Gudrid. She enjoys how kind and caring Einar is towards the Earth and all of those around him. She met Frigg once, and she is absolutely... Arnheid is unable to even explain it(in a good way). She frequently visits Vahalla and is treated as sweetly as her father. She is training to be a healer within the camp. There are very few healers, sadly, and Arnheid has the ability to be one of them.
Hild (Cabin Thirteen)
~ Hild just emanates Skade energy. So it makes sense that they are related. One of my favorite goddesses fr fr. Hild ended up getting injured after an attack on the camp, which is how she got her scar. She was blessed with a magical crossbow that she helped create. Which is what she uses to hunt evil spirits through the cursed woods. She is only able to stand Gudrid, and she often sleeps in her cabin with her.
Snake (Cabin Twelve)
~ Snake is half Naga and half God. He is the son of Njördr. He has a permanent bunk in Cabin 12, as he is one of the guards of the camp and a protected species. He makes a nest of blankets and furs on his bed and sleeps in it. He doesn't interact with people much, but he is quite cordial when he does. He doesn't allow anyone to hurt any of the campers, as he is very protective of them.
~ He has a checkered pattern of black and white scales that run along his slightly longer than average tail (about twelve feet long). From the waist up, he is human-looking and immortal. He is younger than Askeladd and about the same age as Bjorn.
~ He wouldn't be bold enough to say that he considers them friends, but they'll occasionally drink mead together and protect each other if the other is in trouble.
Thorkell (Cabin Three)
~ Are. You. Surprised. Of course, Thorkell is the son of the mighty Thor. He is the co-camp director, although Askeladd won't officially give him that title. It's a long story that involves Valkyries and Fenrir. Thorkell still calls himself the camp director and often takes the campers on dangerous (and fun!) missions. He's been grounded once or twice by Askeladd, and he just ignores Askeladd. He likes Bjorn as well, but Bjorn really dislikes him because Askeladd doesn't like him.
~ He often speaks praise of the Valkyries and their feats and is quite jealous of them, despite being a demigod. He spends a lot of his time (when he is grounded by Askeladd) in Vahalla with Thor. He drinks and eats as much as he can with the fallen soldiers. He is definitely a fan favorite and easily Thor's son.
~ He always harasses Thorfinn, and he absolutely hates his guts. Thorfinn always tries to kill Thorkell and doesn't care about the consequences. Thorkell lost his eye to Thorfinn, and now he and Odin match. Thorkell is also like the chill hippie dude who is also the counselor to all of the campers.
Garm (Cabin Four)
~ The chaotic and evil Garm is the child of Loki. He's always tricking Thorfinn and dragging him off to fight him. Thorfinn just can't get a break. Garm is always tricking other campers into the cursed woods, and few people wish to be associated with him. He is known for causing chaos and death and saving people when they most need it.
~ Garm loves hanging around with Thorkell and sparring with him any chance he gets. He often blows off classes except for training. He spends a lot of his time in the cursed woods (no one knows why or how he survives). He always comes back with his spear bloodied.
Wulf (Cabin Eight)
~ He is one of the mentally ill campers. He is always near Canute, giving him advice on various topics. He is able to divine the future and see (somewhat limitedly) across the nine realms. Heimdall taught him all of this.
~ He is the only camper in cabin eight and has the smallest cabin of them all. There were two other campers, but they mysteriously disappeared (some say Garm was the reason for their disappearance). However, Wulf has never said anything about them disappearing either. He is able to see better than most, so they trust his judgment and willingness to remain quiet and stoic.
~ He is quite fond of Canute's half-sister Estrid, even if she doesn't go to the camp.
Sigurd (Cabin Seven)
~ Sigurd has never been to Vahalla but is planning on going this summer. He hopes to be blessed by Freyr (his father) and get Gudrid's hand in marriage.
~ He gets into arguments with Einar and hates the man. He isn't greatly skilled in his blessings (magic) yet, so he is often frustrated. He hopes that Freyr will show him the way. Perhaps Freyja will bless him as well. Maybe he should go to Canute and get on his good side...
Most of the Vinland Saga characters are aged down here (to their early/late teens/early adulthood). Except for Askeladd, Bjorn, Snake, and Thorkell who are aged up (still look the same).
If you are wondering why more God's aren't on here, I'm keeping with the theme of the au, where they start out with major God's cabins and then build out to more minor ones. (I also had to use God's that would fit with the more prominent Vinland Saga characters.)
Honorable mention to Hel (the goddess of death). She was banished, so naturally any children that she may have would be shunned from the camp. Conflict on that later.

I have a lot more resources if you all want to do your research. These are just the ones I used for a quick refresher. Just ask me for recommendations on links, books, or experts if you want them! There's a lot of misinformation about the Norse gods and culture, so be aware of that while learning. I wish their culture and religion was better preserved.

I'm continuing to read the Road to Hel, and it continues to link death and the domains of the dead with female deities on different levels; both as the rulers of these places (for a given value of "places"), such as Gefjon, who was said to be attended by all women who died as virgins, Rán, who received the drowned, or Freyja in Folkvangr, as well as the role of the Valkyries in choosing the slain and the links between dísir and the afterlife. There's ample room for speculation that the ancient Germanic people believed in a kind of class of female deity that received and hosted the dead, which is reflected in the way that named deities were associated with the afterlife.
Of course, there's one major exception to this, which is... Odin, in Valholl. I think this could be readable as another element of Odin's gender transgression; along with his practice of seidr, another way in which he is counted among a normally female class. (Not said in the book, as far as I know; just my own speculation.)

Here’s my headcanon (I don’t work with her, so I can’t give any sort of xPG): Freya is the hippie stepmom of the Aesir, and she, Frigg, and Gefjon are a Triple Goddess.
Headcanons are fun, but unfortunately not very applicable to a spiritual setting.
It might be time for me to write up something differentiating how we approach spirituality from how we approach fiction.
