Ivan: Why would y’risk stickin’ around? Charlie: We might’ve had a deal with Spencer, but we’ve yet to cash that cheque. As far as the law is concerned, there’s no connection between us; unlike you lot…
Ivan: [scoffs] You’re all the same, just give it time. Charlie: Yeah, I don’t think so. Tyler: Some people have a fuckin’ limit.
Oscar: You don’t know me or my limit, so get that shit outta my face. Tyler: Speakin’ of faces, I’m lovin’ the tat; though I kinda prefer being unique, y’know? Charlie: Ty…

Clear to See
We often pick out patterns in everyday life, but patterns are also integral to our sight too. Our retinas: light-sensing region at the back of our eye, need to develop following the right pattern. This involves defining a high acuity area (HAA); responsible for our ability to see small details, in the region of the retina closest to the temple. Without it, our clarity of vision can be impaired. HAAs are common in many diurnal (active in the day) organisms, including humans and zebrafish. Researchers studying the retina in developing zebrafish embryos have discovered that the foxd1 gene supports HAA formation. Normally defined by a higher density of light-sensing cells that are longer in length, HAAs in embryos without foxd1 (pictured) lose that density, and the cells are shorter (right-hand side; green and magenta), decreasing the resolution of sight. This video shows layers of the eye stacked on top of each other, moving from back to the front.

Y también mención especial a 'Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko', un GL japonés que disfruté muchito.
Me encantó.

Stellar Field Set for Symetra “Road to the LPGA Tour” Event at Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel, Aug. 23-29
Circling Raven Championship Presented by KXLY News 4 Now Features Top Women Professional Golfers
Spectacularly talented women professional golfers from around the globe will soon tee it up in the Circling Raven Championship presented by KXLY News 4 Now, including the current No. 1 player in the Symetra Tour’s season-long pursuit for 2022 LPGA Tour membership. Two golfers with Idaho ties and a high school amateur who earned an exemption through winning a national junior championship are also in the field.
The inaugural event is scheduled for Aug. 23-29, 2021, the first in a three-year partnership with the Symetra Tour, the official qualifying tour of the LPGA Tour, the top women’s professional golf tour worldwide. It will feature a field of 132 competitors battling for $200,000 in prize money, one of the highest purses on the Symetra Tour this year.
Spectator tickets can be purchased here or by visiting the Circling Raven Golf Shop. Single-day passes are just $5 and only $20 whole week. Two-day and three-day passes are also available. The competitive rounds will take place Friday-Sunday, Aug. 27-29, with earlier days dedicated to practice rounds, pro-ams, and more.
Lilia Vu from Fountain Valley, Calif., headlines the field for the tournament that will be played on Circling Raven, a Gene Bates design that is the No. 1 ranked public course in golf-rich Idaho. She is currently at the top of the money earned list in what has been a hard-fought, exciting 2021 season. Named “Race for the Card,” the 10 players with the highest cumulative money won by season’s end earn their LPGA Tour membership for 2022.
Vu helped lead Team USA to victory at the 2018 Curtis Cup, was a member of the 2018 Arnold Palmer Cup and USA World Amateur Teams, and as a UCLA Bruin, was a 1st team All-American and All-Pac 12 performer. She has won twice on the Symetra Tour this season, as has Ruixin Liu from China and Casey Danielson from Wisconsin, both of whom join Vu in the Circling Raven Championship field.
Testament to the exceptional talent found on the Symetra Tour can be seen through its “graduates” who include Nelly Korda, Inbee Park, Patty Tavatanakit, Lorena Ochoa, and Madelene Sagstrom). Fourteen graduates competed in the recently completed Summer Olympics in Japan.
One player participating in the Circling Raven Championship (CRC) with an Idaho connection is Gabby Lemieux, a native of Caldwell, Idaho. A Native American from the Shoshone-Paiute tribe, Lemieux has a wonderful connection with the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, which owns and operates the casino resort and golf club. She played college golf at Texas Tech and is a three-time Idaho Golf Association Women’s Amateur Champion.
Sophie Hausmann will also compete in the CRC. A native of Germany who played college golf at University of Idaho, she was a two-time Big Sky Conference Player of the Year. Hausmann has won on the Symetra Tour this season.
High-schooler Allyn Stephens from Houston, Texas – daughter of Joe Stephens, a former player for the Houston Rockets of the NBA – earned an exemption into the tournament by winning the girls 14-18 age group title in the NB3 National Junior Golf Championship last fall. Spearheaded by Notah Begay III, a Native American, erstwhile PGA TOUR member, and current broadcaster for NBC Universal and Golf Channel, the partnership between Begay and the Coeur d’Alene Tribe aligns well with their missions.
“We’re honored to have these women play in the Circling Raven Championship,” said Laura Penney, CEO, Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel. “Like Notah Begay, we support empowering women and girls through the game. Doing so was one of the objectives the Coeur d’Alene Tribe set when it decided to build Circling Raven Golf Club.”

Telomerasa

April 21, 2020: King Felipe and Queen Letizia held a videoconference with researchers from the CSIC. They value the CSIC's international reference in the COVID-19 investigation and the platform created to analyze all aspects of the pandemic.
The researchers of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) Margarita del Val Latorre, immunologist, CBM-CSIC and Luis Enjuanes, virologist, CNB-CSIC, held a videoconference meeting with Their Majesties the Kings to specifically explain the task and the CSIC's commitment to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, containment, impact and investigation of COVID-19. The Minister of Science and Innovation, Pedro Duque, together with the President of the CSIC, Rosa Menéndez and Jesús Marco, Vice President of Research of the CSIC, participated in the meeting. His Majesty the King spoke by telephone with the president of the CSIC on March 31.
Professor Enjuanes' group at the CSIC's National Center for Biotechnology (CNB) is an international reference in this area and is completing the assembly of an attenuated version of the virus that will serve as the basis for said vaccine.
The CSIC's Global Health / Global Health Platform, coordinated by the researcher Margarita del Val, and promoted by the Vice-Presidency for Research on the occasion of the COVID-19 pandemic, aims to coordinate the investigation of more than 150 multidisciplinary groups of the CSIC, in biology, chemistry, physics, computing, materials science and also in demography, economics and philosophy.
The platform covers all aspects of the pandemic: origin, expansion, prevention, infection, treatment, containment and impact, and the groups have presented more than 80 initiatives. 25 projects have been launched, thanks to the support of donations such as those made by MAPFRE and AENA.
The Higher Council for Scientific Research, CSIC is globally addressing research that requires a pandemic such as the one caused by the disease COVID-19, generated by the coronavirus SARS-cov-2 with the direct support of the Government through the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
Professor Luis Enjuanes has explained to Don Felipe and Doña Letizia that the CNB-CSIC Coronavirus laboratory has been working in the Coronavirus (CoV) field for more than 35 years, with the main interest in studying the virus's replication mechanisms, virulence and virus-host interaction to develop protection strategies, such as vaccines and antivirals.
The research group obtained the first infective cDNA for coronaviruses, which are viruses that have one of the largest known RNA genomes. This reverse genetic system (genetic engineering) has been essential to identify the virus genes responsible for its pathogenicity. Once these genes are identified, they are removed, giving rise to attenuated viruses that are vaccine candidates.
On the other hand, the development of humanized animal models that reproduce the viral disease observed in humans is very important. These animal models are essential for pathogenesis studies and for preclinical evaluation of the efficacy and safety of vaccine candidates and are also being developed at the CNB-CSIC.
The CNB group has studied the virulence and virus-host interaction mechanisms in human fatal respiratory viruses SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. They first showed that the SARS-CoV envelope protein (E) was a virulence factor. They also identified a motif of a virus protein (PBM) that binds to a cellular protein (synthetin) and leads to lung inflammation, edema, and death of mice. Interestingly, inhibitors of this interaction dramatically increased the survival of mice after SARS-CoV infection and thus constitute an antiviral. The identification of the cellular pathways involved in viral pathogenesis provides information for the rational identification of potential antivirals.
He also explained that the research group has developed candidate vaccines based on recombinant attenuated live SARS-CoV that lacks the E protein. These candidates provided full protection in several animal models against infection with virulent SARS-CoV.
More recently, this laboratory has been developing replicons of MERS-CoV RNA (MERS-RR) as vaccine candidates, based on RNAs that cannot spread from one cell to another, making them highly biosecure since they are based on in single-cycle viruses, which cannot spread from cell to cell, making them candidates for vaccines applicable to people.
The experience and knowledge of the CoV team is currently being applied to the study of the new coronavirus that recently emerged in Wuhan, to rapidly develop vaccine candidates and identify potential targets for new antivirals.
He has indicated to the project coordinated by the researcher Margarita del Val that it is an Interdisciplinary Thematic Platform (ITP) called Global Health / Global Health, in which more than 150 research groups from different specialties, from biotechnology and nanotechnology to demography and artificial intelligence, to seek short, medium and especially long-term solutions to address the challenges posed by problems such as the current SARS-CoV2 coronavirus epidemic.
One of the keys to this PTI Global Health is to have a global vision that enables all aspects of the pandemic to be linked: origin, prevention, disease, containment measures, treatment, social impact, and finally the need for communication to society. , particularly in education; It also includes four transversal working groups: innovation, sources of information, data and applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and coordination with the Autonomous Communities.
The platform, promoted by the CSIC's Vice President for Scientific and Technical Research, is coordinated by the researcher at the Severo Ochoa Center for Molecular Biology (CBMSO) Margarita del Val, supported by a committee of experts in the different areas involved.
A platform involving groups that have national and European projects underway for the development of a vaccine (projects by researchers Luis Enjuanes and Isabel Sola, and Mariano Esteban at the National Center for Biotechnology CNB) or new diagnostic techniques (project of Professor Laura Lechuga, CSIC, at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology ICN2).
From the platform, more than 80 proposals from research groups from all over Spain have also been channeled to the call of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), many of them forming a team with Universities, Hospitals and other institutions, as befits an open platform and collaborative.
The platform has already started 25 of these projects, thanks especially to the support of companies and individuals, among which donations from the Fundación MAPFRE and AENA stand out.
These are projects that will allow a much better understanding of virus transmission, its dynamics, and its clinical and epidemiological characteristics. They will also develop new diagnostic technologies, test new antiviral combinations, and contribute to the development of an effective new antigen-based vaccine.
One of the most important challenges proposed is to characterize the immunological response to the virus in the Spanish population, key to a new possible wave of infection. Equally relevant is the study of the effects of mobility restriction measures and social distancing on the epidemic, to design future containment strategies. And the analysis of the coordination mechanisms between health policy and other sectors of public policy to speed up the response to crises.
Precisely the great value of this Global Health Platform is to unite the knowledge of all these first-line research groups in different areas, which will allow the preparation of a working document in the short term with the key questions in the short, medium and long term. , to respond from science, and from our country, to this pandemic, which allows us to find as soon as possible the solutions that society urgently demands of us.

Went to brunch and three panels today, sponsored by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation, and that was very awesome. I sat next to Charlie Bolden at brunch, and Ellen Ochoa was at my table also. I asked Ellen Ochoa if she still played flute (because there is a space shuttle picture with her in space with her flute out), and she said she started taking lessons again (which is awesome since I am also a flute player)
Tumblr media
Right after brunch, there was a Families of Astronauts panel, with children of Jim Lovell, Rusty Schweikhart, Alan Bean, Alan Shepard, Gene Cernan, Bill Anders, Stuart Roosa, Buzz Aldrin, and Neil Armstrong all participating in it. It was amazing to here their stories. Jeff Lovell and Peter Conrad definitely look like their dads (sorry for my bad photography skills)
Tumblr media
After the Families of Astronauts panel, there was the Women in Space panel, with Anna Fisher, Ellen Ochoa, and Eileen Collins. That was an amazing panel also
Tumblr media
After the Women in Space panel, there was the Future of Space panel that included Chris Ferguson and Bob Cabana. Unlike the two other panels, each panelist actually got up one after another and have PowerPoint presentations. Then, they sat down for a Q&A. Chris Ferguson sadly had to leave early because he didn’t want to miss his flight back to Houston. I sat right in front of Rusty Schweikhart (the son of the astronaut), and I didn’t realize that until he asked a question

A giant monster attacks!
Super Sentai Rangers AU.
I must say I didn’t expect writing a Sentai AU would be so hard. These stories have LOTS of different elements to juggle, and I wanted to keep most of what I could from the original setting. Took much longer than I thought. This is the second part, and it pretty much finishes setting the stage for the series.
I’ve got a newfound respect for these kinds of series!
Hope you enjoy this…!
It doesn’t take long to realize Mia Ochoa had not managed to get a good view of just how bad the situation was.
For starters, the giant floating disc actually looks larger than it looked on TV. And the blue beam is still in use, teleporting squads of soldiers to the ground, all wearing the strange silver armor. There are corpses everywhere, it seems they went guns blazing when they initially took the park. Several overturned police cars remain as a burning testament of the futility of the city’s security force.
The soldiers seem to be amassing in battallions through all of Memorial Park, probably ready to rampage across the city.
As to whether they’re actually aliens… that remains to be determined. You can sense their minds in the distance, but the park is open ground. It’d be hard to get close enough to get a good read without getting noticed.
You can only wonder why isn’t the army here already, but that’s a mystery for another time. Right now, you need to figure out how to put an end to this.
You hear footprints behind you. You get into a fighting stance and…
“You’re fast!” It’s actually pleasing to hear the familiar voice this time.
“Charge. I thought you got lost in traffic… Welcome to this mess” you say inviting him to share your vantage point.
You can’t help feel weird as he joins you… You’re back on the same team, but you’re wearing your villain outfit and he doesn’t know it’s you. It was confusing enough when you were beating each other up.
“So do you guys have a plan?” you ask.
“A plan against an army of  space invaders with a flying saucer?” He says in a sarcastic tone.
“Yeah… nevermind that… Aren’t the rest of your cavalry going to arrive soon?”
“Alas my dear villain, the cavalry is us. There are similar attacks going on in other cities. Also, Steel, Herald, and Argent are delayed helping the LDPD mount a barricade. So until they can join us it’s just us”
Deja vu can be hurtful. You go silent for a moment. Does he feel it too?
“Why didn’t you go with them instead?” you ask
“We need someone to see the action up close while keeping the civilians safe… and let’s be honest, no way we were going to send the new blood to work along with you so it was Steel or me, and he’s the Marshall. Plus, we don’t know when are you going to backstab us. Also, please don’t backstab me?” he asks with a nervous smile.
“I’ll take your request into consideration” You let out.
“Ha! You can make jokes. Wait It was a joke right?”
You ignore him while enhancing the zoom in your mask’s visor to get a better look. Something’s not right with their weapons
“What is it?” he asks, focusing on them as well.
“Take a good look at their weapons,” you say pointing at them.
Charge’s helm flickers as he zooms in too. He gasps after a few seconds.
“They’re military energy guns!”
“Exactly. Which means they’re not aliens if they’re using USA military supplies…”
“But why would the army attack their own city?”
“You’re the government goon not me, remember? , you figure that out. Still we should at least find what they’re planning so we can figure a way to stop them.”
“And how do you propose we do that?”
“We take one of those soldiers prisoner”
“And then he’ll gladly tell us his whole plans?”
You tap your helmet. “I’m a half-decent telepath in case you didn’t notice”
“You can do that?”
“I’ve mind-controlled swarms of people… you guys saw me do it… why wouldn’t I be able to get some information?”
He ponders for a few seconds before answering. “I guess I’m not used to telepaths being so powerful. I only knew one well… he…”.
No. No no no. you’re not doing this. Not like this. He’s not going to talk to you about yourself.
“Save it. Let’s set up an ambush over there” you point at a distant part of the park. A few soldiers are patrolling the area far apart. “We should be able to snatch one of them easily near those trees,” you add, and simply start running, forcing him to follow. Hopefully, he won’t bring Sidestep up again.
………………………………………………….
“NOW!” Ortega cries out, charging onto them. Really? Did he have to announce it?
With a groan, you charge behind him. The soldiers turn immediately but you still manage a pair of solid hits. The two put up quite more of a fight than you had anticipated, but end up going down at about the same time.
“They’re though” Charge complains rubbing his fist.
“I’m more concerned about their numbers… and their minds are just… odd” you mutter as you take one of the unconscious soldier’s arms while Charge gets hold of his legs and helps you take him behind a large oak tree.
“Time to do your mind-trick”
“It’s not a trick” you complain. Fuck. This is too familiar. “Just watch for them,” you tell him before focusing on his mind.
It’s strange. Odd, yet familiar. And there are many safeguards… hidden paths and you can’t help feeling you’ve seen something like this before. It takes a moment before you manage to infiltrate into his inner thoughts.. protected as if someone else had installed a lock… and when you open the door…
“FUCK!” you almost scream opening your eyes and letting go.
“SHHH! You’re going to get us caught!”
“This is bad… bad bad bad…” you can’t help repeating.
“What is?”
“They are… they… they’re not humans”
“So they ARE aliens after all?!” he asks in confusion.
“No.. no they are… ” You sigh “Let me show you…”
You hold your hand to the soldier, the nanites disintegrating his armor. Revealing the blue skin. The orange tattoos.
“A re-gene?”
You nod slowly. Whatever could you say to him right now?
“Crap… Always thought those things were going to turn against us one day”
It’s like a gut-punch to hear those words. You take a few steps back in shock. He doesn’t really notice and gets on his wrist-com.
“Steel? Our good frenemy Retribution just figured out the big mystery. They are rebel re-genes!”
“What? What’s the Special Directive up to?” You hear his garbled voice from the intercom.
“I’m not sure, but come over soon, we’re going to need all of us to figure out a plan to…”
Your gaze goes blurry, watching the scene at the park. Regenes attacking humans. A revolution against your masters… Maybe you’re on the wrong side of this? You thought it was aliens, and the Governor offered you a deal, but once again, all your plans go up in smoke. They aren’t aliens. They’re your people. Shouldn’t you be helping them? Ortega’s distracted right now… You could knock him down and join them… This is what you…
No. No this isn’t it.  You can smell the burning cars. You can see the blood and the corpses. This isn’t the revolution you had hoped for. This is just a senseless massacre.
It’s just a…
“What the hell… are you seeing that Charge?” Steel asks
“What do you mean?” he says lifting his gaze from his intercom. You turn as well.
The disc is turning… and a large pod the size of medium-sized truck detaches from it. and lands in the middle of the park, generating a large cloud of dust.
As it clears you can see the pod right there… cracked.
The soldiers surround it and start tearing it open. There is a greenish liquid coming from inside as it breaks down.
“It’s almost like… an egg?” you say out loud.
“What you mean there’s something alive inside?” Charge asks in shock.
“Give me a clear image you two!” Steel demands from the intercom. Charge complies, pointing the thing at the pod.
Soon enough what appears to be a claw emerges from inside, and the soldiers jump back. The creature inside breaks what remains of the pod and stands.
Tall… numerous legs, and a long red tail ending on a stinger. THe face looks human.. but with fangs and blood red eyes..
A dark figure approaches, the soldiers making way. It’s wearing a strange black suit with a helmet. You try to zoom in more. The new individual seems to be giving orders, and soon enough, the soldiers clear a large area around the emerging creature.
“EMERGE SCORPIUS!” He orders.
Charge taps you in the shoulder
“I think that’s about enough for recon… let’s get out of here before…”
“ATTENTION, CITIZENS OF LOS DIABLOS!!!” The booming voice catches both of you by surprise.
The disk starts emitting a large hologram over the sky for everyone to see. So that’s why they took the park first… You focus on the image as it gains focus… a woman…
It’s her. You had hoped not to see her ever again… She’s wearing a whole new costume and some sort of eye-implant, but it’s definitely her. You stumble backward into Charge, who holds you.
“Hey hey watch it!”
“It’s Regina!!” you gasp in terror.
“Wait you mean you know her?”
“HEAR MY WORDS! I AM REGIS, GRAND DIRECTOR OF THE APOCALYPSE FORCE AND THE GREATEST TECHNOLOGICAL GENIUS OF THIS PLANET! YOUR PUNY POLICE IS NO MATCH FOR MY FORCES, AND YOUR ARMIES ARE TASTING DEFEAT AS WE SPEAK! THERE ARE NONE WHO COULD OPPOSE THE APOCALYPSE FORCE IN THE ENTIRE WEST COAST! FROM THIS POINT ON, I CLAIM THIS CITY BELONGS TO ME! ALL WHO WISH TO SERVE UNDER MY RULE MIGHT STAY. EVERYONE ELSE IS COMMANDED TO EVACUATE. YOU HAVE 24 HOURS TO COMPLY! NOW LET ME GIVE YOU A SIMPLE DEMONSTRATION OF MY SUPREME POWER!” The hologram banishes, and the disc starts spinning rapidly emitting a red beam onto the Scorpion creature.
“What… the … fuck…?” he asks in disbelief. Charge shakes your shoulders “Who is she?”
You point forward, leading his gaze back onto the creature… which is dramatically increasing in size.
“Wow. That’s… big…”
It’s getting big fast. Too fast. The beam stops as the thing stands as tall as a building.
The dark Figure activates some sort of jetpack and flies up to the creature’s shoulder. “Start tearing out the nearby area, Great mutant Scorpius!”
The monster’s roar is deafening. It’s not just it’s the size that increased. And then it notices you two, staring back at it, making you feel helpless prey.
Its eyes go red, as it emits a blast your way.
“MOVE” you scream, shoving Ortega out of the way. Unfortunately, you have no time to get out of the way yourself…
The explosion projects you backward, your armor cracking and sending red alerts all over. Did you just take the hit for Ortega? You bounce several times before falling next to a small tree.
Everything hurts so much… But you’re still alive. Mortum’s design is truly amazing.
“Stand up!"
Charge’s hands pull you up putting your arm around his shoulder and help you run through the park’s pathway. You can barely see where you’re going with all the alarms going on in your HUD display. You wonder if you’ve broken something too…
"They’re closing in,” you tell him, as you get to a crossroads. Why is this fucking park so large?
“Which way?” he asks. You quickly scan the area before answering…
“Left,” you say coughing and sensing the taste of blood in your mouth. Shit, maybe you did break something. He starts another sprint with you. It’s hard to know how long will you be able to keep up the pace…
“Leave me. We’re going to get surrounded” you mutter “I’m not going to do that” he grunts walking forward… “Why did you save me?!”
“Because you’re too slow and stupid to get out of the way on your own! I told you to leave me! No way you can get out carrying me around!”
“SHUT UP!” he actually holds you tighter as you keep going forward…until the blue light from the disc fires up in front of you.
Of course. The can teleport their forces and their giant monster can obviously see you. You were never going to escape…
“Hello, Rangers” The dark figure you saw earlier advances towards you. He’s wearing a black outfit with some yellow outlines. Red goggles and hidden face.“I’m Doctor Blitz! One of the three leading scientists of the Apocalypse Force serving Grand Director Regis! I’ve been waiting for a chance to test my weapons against you!” he boasts
“Actually, I’m the only Ranger here. He’s just…” Ortega starts.
But the self-proclaimed doctor isn’t interested and just motions for his soldiers to charge. You try to strike a shaky fighting stance, while the Rat King urges you to run away.
They are about to clash, when a series of explosions go off, blasting the enemy. You turn to the side and see Steel with a smoking gun. Argent and Herald come close behind, and the three of them quickly put themselves between you and the enemy.
“More rangers!! You’ve saved me the trouble of looking for you!”
“Well, you’ve found us!” Steel says charging onto the enemy.
A melee strikes out, with more and more soldiers joining in.
Soon enough you’re struggling to fend them off taking hits all over your damaged armor. THe rangers aren’t doing much better.
Their battlesuits are military-grade and definitely more advanced than yours.
“Hahahaha! The great rangers always get their man. Don’t make me laugh!” Doctor Blitz boasts. “Feel a taste of my power!” he lets on, activating some kind of energy wave device with his palms. “TELEKINETIC DARK FORCE!” he utters.
“Wait, what?” Argent asks before she, and the rest of you are shoved away by the energy wave he emits.
You slowly attempt to get back on your feet, the rangers emitting similar pained groans around you.
They have you completely surrounded and hopelessly outnumbered.
“PAthetic! I guess I’ll let Scorpius deal with you, rangers! SCORPIUS! Vaporize them! For the Regis!” He yells raising his fist, as his soldiers do the same.
You notice the giant monster is preparing to fire it’s beam attack again…
“TAKE COVER!” Steel cries… but it’s too late…
You hide your masked face in your hands and the rat king shrieks in terror.
You’re engulfed in white light. ……………………………………………..
Familiar white light.
“Where are we?” It’s Herald’s voice.
You stumble trying to stand, but fail. The Hud Finally goes dark. You’re blind.
“Some kind of Laboratory” Mortum.
Hands… turning you over… removing your mask.
“N… no! Get off!” you mutter… but it’s too late.
Ortega takes your helm off… You can hear Mortum’s voice in the background as he runs down the stairs of his lab. “Are you alright?” he goes.
“Cyrus?!?!” Ortega asks surprised as Retribution’s mask falls to the side. They all turn onto you.
What an epic clusterfuck.
That’s your last thought before you pass out from the pain.

Movies I watched this week #67
2 based on Japanese Manga:
🎦🎦🎦 Oldboy, my second Park Chan-wook (after ‘The Handmaiden’ last week), a brutal revenge fantasy, full of madness, television, violence and incest. I hated the gratuitous sadism and had to look away at the tongue-cutting scene, but the 3rd act elevated the story for me and allowed me to appreciate the complex cinematic quality of this mystery.
🎦🎦🎦 My first from (Hayao’s son) Gorō Miyazaki’s From Up on Poppy Hill, a slightly-different, but still sweet Studio Ghibli tale about good girl Umi Matsuzaki, a high school student living in a boarding house. Going through the complete Ghibli production, I still have to find one that is not excellent. 8/10.
🍿
Emily Ting’s semi-autobiographical Go Back to China. The very pretty YouTuber Anna Akana plays a spoiled Chinese-American trust-fund young woman, who’s forced to move to Shenzhen, in order to help her domineering father run his plush-toy factory there. Like a slick, light and colorful ‘Crazy rich Asians’ but dealing with father-daughter relationships, instead of romance. 6/10 (because it had a very personal angle for me).
🍿
4 re-watches:
🎦🎦🎦 Arthur Penn’s New Hollywood milestone Bonnie and Clyde, the film that launched Pauline Kael‘s career as the film critic of The New Yorker. Rebellious, anti-establishment and sexually-nontraditional retelling of the life and death of the two bank-robbers. With Gene Wilder.
🎦🎦🎦 ..Esta revolución es eterna...
Wim Wender’s best film ever, Buena Vista Social Club. Documenting how guitarist Ry Cooder gathered en ensemble of old Cuban “son” musicians, who were mostly retired or forgotten, and got them to play again, revive some of their old songs, and perform in four magnificent concerts. Including the great Compay Segundo, Eliades Ochoa, Ibrahim Ferrer, Omara Portuondo, and a dozen others.
- One of my favorite films of all time.
🎦🎦🎦 After ‘Field of Dreams’, “Blond Rhino Spaniel” (AKA Phil Alden Robinson) directed Sneakers, “The Finest Crime Caper Movie of the 1990s”. Highly quotable thriller (“...Cattle mutilations are up...”, “...Tahiti is not in Europe”... , “Be a beacon in his sad and lonely life...” “...We're the good guys, Marty -.Gee, I can't tell you what a relief that is... DICK..”) about computer hacking, 20 years before Edward Snowden. With an all Oscar ensemble cast (3 winners, 4 nominees) plus Stephen Tobolowsky and James Earl Jones - and Rickey Jay as a “Slight of hand consultant”. Here’s the Mary McDonnell ‘Chain of Fools’ happy dance scene. Another film that can be watched again and again. Prompted this time by this fine Metafilter thread T1O2O2 M3A1N1Y10 S1E1C4R1E1T1S1. 9/10.
🎦🎦🎦 My niece, Michal, told me yesterday that she is following this film blog, and among my recommendations she liked Anna Kendrick’s A simple favor. So, “Obviously” I had to see it again (4th? 5th? time in one year - that’s insane!) - this suburban mommy vlogger story shouldn’t be “my” kind of subject, but she’s so cute and acts her role so well, that I’ve been completely hooked.
🍿
2 with Alexandra Stewart:
🎦🎦🎦 In François Ozon’s French drama Under the sand, Charlotte Rampling and her husband of 25 years vacation at their summer house at the beach, where he disappears after going into the water. It’s obvious that he had drowned, but she cannot accept it or cope with his absence, and keeps seeing him wherever she goes. 4/10.
🎦🎦🎦 I’ve collected a list of a dozen films about suicide that I want to visit, and Louis Malle’s 1963 The Fire Within is the first of them. An existentialist look at an alienated recovering alcoholic who had given up on the struggle. And on the day before he chooses to kill himself, he visits his old friends and lovers in Paris (including Jeanne Moreau and the radiant Alexandra Stewart as Solange) to say goodbye. Erik Satie’s Gnossiennes accompanies him.
“I’m killing myself because you didn’t love me, because I didn’t love you. Because our ties were loose, I’m killing myself to tighten them. I leave you with an indelible stain.”  7/10.
🍿
Windfall is a tense, new thriller with Jesse Plemons, Jason Segel and Phil Collins's daughter. Like ‘Straw Dogs’ and other claustrophobic home invasion films, a clumsy burglar is stuck with a young rich couple who owns a beautiful, secluded country house. Fear inducing and unpleasant but tightly-done. 5/10.
🍿
2 with both Michael Chernus and Adam Scott:
🎦🎦🎦 Apple’s new, much-lauded and compelling series Severance, a speculative sci-fi mystery box, where weird conspiracies stay purposefully unexplained. Dystopian exploration of office life with sinister sense of Scientology-related cultist oppression (added no doubt by the Tom Cruise-lookalike main actor). With John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette, and a terrific final episode. It was very bingeable, but I doubt I’ll join them for the second season next year.
(Opening Credits Above). 5/10.
🎦🎦🎦 Typical uninspiring Netflix trash - The Most Hated Woman in America. A horrendous botched-up TV-biopic about a subject that deserves so much better: The kidnapping and murder of American atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair, her son and granddaughter. 1/10.
🍿
The City Without Jews, a 1924 silent black and white film, one of the few surviving Expressionist films from Austria. A satirical allegory about antisemitism, the story of a place called Utopia that decides to throw out all the Jews. It can only be seen in hindsight as a premonition of all the things about to happen. And it didn’t take long, because right after the premier of the film, the author of the book upon which the it was based was murdered by a member of the Nazi party.
🍿         Breaking News:
Two weeks ago, after re-watching ’Finding Vivian Maier’, I predicted that many of her photos will soon start appearing as derivative works all over the place, and with time may become as prevalent as other pop-art icons (Starry Night, Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup, Marcel Duchamp’s Mona Lisa, The Hindenburg, The girl with a pearl earring). Yesterday, I discovered the first of these, Eduardo Kobra’s mural of her in Chicago, close to where she used to work as a nanny. I’m sure that many more will pop-up now.
