Portrait of painter George Tooker (1920-2011). Together with Jared French and Paul Cadmus, Tooker's paintings can be understood as magic realism. Tooker, who also used the Renaissance egg-tempera technique to paint, focused on subtle social criticism and created fascinating and rich works. While sharing an atelier with French and Cadmus, Tooker became Cadmus's lover. Portrait of painter and illustrator Paul Cadmus (1904-1999). Cadmus's paintings in egg tempera are mostly in a magic realism I don't appreciate very much - though some paintings (especially his Conversation Piece of Monroe Wheeler, Glenway Wescott and George Platt Lynes, as well as his portrait of his lover Jared French) really are masterpieces. However, his drawings are amongst the best I know. The pressure to make a good portrait of Cadmus was, understandably, high - and I fear I'm not completely satisfied...
