Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves (2023) Review
Edgin is a rather charming thief who together with a rather misfitted group of unlikely adventurers must head on an epic quest to retrieve a lost relic, obviously nothing goes to plan! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Continue reading Untitled

Big News !!
Tumblr media
1. Donald Trump arrested. It's a first for any US President! Hooray on the iconic achievement! He got booked at a Georgia jail on racketeering charges and had a sexy mugshot taken. He got out around 20 minutes after surrendering because he paid the bail amount.
Tumblr media
2. Yevgeny Prighozin "death". Apparently a plane with him and 10 other people crash landed in Russia, and he's now presumed dead. He was a far right dude who rebelled against Putin because he didn't get enough leeway from him to be an asshole. He called off the march after a day. Two months later, he's dead. Go figure.
Tumblr media
3. Chandrayaan-3 Success. They succeeded in soft landing on the South Pole of the moon, making them the first country to land on the South Pole and the fourth country to land a rover mission on the moon. It's the successor of the Chandrayaan-2 and the lander is named Vikram, while the Rover is named Pragyan. They focused on giving it more fuel than the previous mission in 2019 to allow for greater spin, and also used the images from the failed mission to aid the landing of the Chandrayaan-3.

Sorry for being a pesky news anchor, I just couldn't hold it in because of the barrage of news I've been bombarded with this week. A lot of interesting developments recently.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES (2023)
Starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Hugh Grant, Chloe Coleman, Daisy Head, Jason Wong, Rylan Jackson, Kyle Hixon, Spencer Wilding, Will Irvine, Nicholas Blane, Bryan Larkin, Sarah Amankwah, Colin Carnegie, Georgia Landers, Sophia Nell Huntley, Clayton Grover, San Shella, Barry O'Connor and Bradley Cooper.
Screenplay by Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley.
Directed by Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley and Michael Gilio.
Distributed by Paramount Pictures. 134 minutes. Rated PG-13.
Although the game has changed a whole lot over the years, since 1974 Dungeons & Dragons has been exciting the fantasies of nerdy guys, who spent eight hours a day in their mom’s basements with graph paper and oddly shaped dice, summoning magic and cunning and trying to save the world from monsters. (Nowadays there is no graph paper, and the basements tend to belong to the actual players, but otherwise it’s pretty much the same vibe.)
Filmmakers have been trying to translate the game into film periodically for over 40 years, if you count the unsanctioned 1982 TV movie Mazes and Monsters, which was unofficially based on the D&D phenomenon and is now only slightly remembered otherwise because it was Tom Hanks’ first lead role in a film.
Then there was director Courtney Solomon’s wretched 2000 critical and box office bomb Dungeons & Dragons. Despite being despised by game fans and movie fans alike, the movie did spawn two made-for-video sequels, Wrath of the Dragon God (2005) and The Book of Vile Darkness (2011). Those three films are also, mercifully, pretty long forgotten.
Well, thank the Lords, with the new complete reboot of the series, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Hollywood has finally figured out how to tame this beast. Don’t get me wrong, Honor Among Thieves is far from a perfect movie. However, it is a whole hell of a lot of fun and feels like the perfect spawning ground for a legitimate D&D film franchise.
Good for them.
It’s not really a serious fantasy film. Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves feels more like something like The Princess Bride or Shrek; a film which is serious about being funny that just happens to be in a fantastical world. You don’t even necessarily have to have played the game (I haven’t in decades) to enjoy the movie. It is almost like a comedy that just uses the fantasy world as a frame for its tale. It has monsters and fighting and yet at the same time it is rarely gruesome or overly violent. It is more of a comic character study than an action-adventure tale.
Honor Among Thieves is co-written and directed by filmmaking team Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley (the Freaks and Geeks kid all grown up!) The two Johns are smart pop culture chroniclers; however their filmmaking has been pretty up and down. For every really good film they have been involved in (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Horrible Bosses, Game Night) they have also had one that is pretty bad (Vacation, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Horrible Bosses 2).
Dungeons & Dragons is one of the good ones.
Chris Pine stars as Edgin the Bard, a thief who is doing hard time after a botched robbery attempt. His wife has died – also peripherally due to his thievery – so now all he is living for is to get out and see his daughter Kira (Chloe Coleman), who is living with one of his accomplices, a con man named Forge (Hugh Grant). When Edgin and his partner Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) escape from the dungeon lair, they go off in search of Kira, only to find that Forge has scammed his way into leadership of the land with help of a red sorceress named Sophina (Daisy Head).
So, yeah, there is a story, not that it really matters.
More importantly, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has some stunning effects and creatures, and it’s a heck of a lot more pure fun than overwrought fantasies like Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, so we don’t either. It’s all the more likable because of that lightness.
Pine reminds us that despite his leading man good looks, he is actually quite skilled at goofy comedy and the rest of the cast is also terrific, particularly Grant as the sniveling and duplicitous Forge.
I hope that if there is a sequel – and I think we can all pretty safely bet that there will be one – that the filmmakers remember to keep the light touch and smart action of Honor Among Thieves.

Exploring Europa possible with silicon-germanium transistor technology Europa is more than just one of Jupiter’s many moons – it’s also one of most promising places in the solar system to look for extraterrestrial life. Under 10 kilometers of ice is a liquid water ocean that could sustain life. But with surface temperatures at -180 Celsius and with extreme levels of radiation, it’s also one of the most inhospitable places in the solar system. Exploring Europa could be possible in the coming years thanks to new applications for silicon-germanium transistor technology research at Georgia Tech. Regents’ Professor John D. Cressler in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and his students have been working with silicon-germanium heterojunction bipolar transistors (SiGe HBTs) for decades and have found them to have unique advantages in extreme environments like Europa. “Due to the way that they're made, these devices actually survive those extreme conditions without any changes made to the underlying technology itself,” said Cressler, who is the project investigator. “You can build it for what you want it to do on Earth, and you then can use it in space.” The researchers are in year one of a three-year grant in the NASA Concepts for Ocean Worlds Life Detection Technology (COLDTech) program to design the electronics infrastructure for upcoming Europa surface missions. NASA plans to launch the Europa Clipper in 2024, an orbiting spacecraft that will map the oceans of Europa, and then eventually send a landing vehicle, Europa Lander, to drill through the ice and explore its ocean. But it all starts with electronics that can function in Europa’s extreme environment. Cressler and his students, together with researchers from NASA Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) and the University of Tennessee (UT), demonstrated the capabilities of SiGe HBTs for this hostile environment in a paper presented at the IEEE Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects Conference in July. Europa’s Challenge Like Earth, Jupiter also has a liquid metal core that generates a magnetic field, producing radiation belts of high-energy protons and electrons from the impinging solar wind. Unfortunately, as a moon of Jupiter, Europa sits squarely in those radiation belts. In effect, any technology designed for Europa’s surface would not only need to be able to survive the cold temperatures but also the worst radiation encountered in the solar system. Fortunately, SiGe HBTs are ideal for this hostile environment. The SiGe HBT introduces a nanoscale Si-Ge alloy inside a typical bipolar transistor to nano-engineer its properties, effectively producing a much faster transistor while maintaining the economy-of-scale and low cost of traditional silicon transistors. SiGe HBTs have the unique ability to maintain performance under extreme radiation exposure, and their properties naturally improve at colder temperatures. Such a unique combination makes them ideal candidates for Europa exploration. “It's not just doing the basic science and proving that SiGe works,” Cressler said. “It's actually developing electronics for NASA to use on Europa. We know SiGe can survive high levels of radiation. And we know it's remains functional at cold temperatures. What we did not know is if it could do both at the same time, which is needed for Europa surface missions.” Testing the Transistors To answer this question, the GT researchers used JPL’s Dynamitron, a machine that shoots high-flux electrons at very low temperatures to test SiGe in Europa-type environments. They exposed SiGe HBTs to one million Volt electrons to a radiation dose of five million rads of radiation (200-400 rads is lethal to humans), at 300, 200, and 115 Kelvins (-160 Celsius). “What had never been done was to use electronics like we did in that experiment,” Cressler said. “So, we worked literally for the first year to get the results that are in that paper, which is in essence definitive proof that what we claimed is, in fact, true—that SiGe does survive Europa surface conditions.” In the next two years, the GT and UT researchers will develop actual circuits from SiGe that could be used on Europa, such as radios and microcontrollers. Yet more importantly, these devices could then be seamlessly used in almost any space environment, including on the moon and Mars. “If Europa is the worst-case environment in the solar system, and you can build these to work on Europa, then they will work anywhere,” Cressler said. “This research ties together past research that we have done in my team here at Georgia Tech for a long time and shows really interesting and novel applications of these technologies. We pride ourselves on using our research to break new innovative ground and thereby enable novel applications.”
